Is adolescence necessarily a period of "storm and stress

The word adolescent comes from the Latin adolescere, meaning to "grow into maturity". To many people it means the time when they become an adult. Everybody goes through adolescence, how they experience it is a different matter. The question that is being asked "is adolescence necessarily a time of storm and stress". In this essay there are many different points of view. There are arguments for and against; they range from body image to identity to culture to independence.

As an adolescent, the body undergoes many changes, not only does the adolescent's physical appearance change dramatically in terms of height and weight, but he or she begins to experience the physical and hormonal changes leading to sexual maturation. Evidence suggests that up until these changes occur, children are quite happy with their body' and do not really care about their body image. (Jersild 15, in Gross 1 pg 1). Arnoff and Damianopoulos (16) showed that adolescents who were just over the age of adolescence took more notice of their body' than forty year old people. This maybe because adolescents spend more time looking at themselves. (Arnoff and Damianopoulos 16 in Gross). On the other hand, when it comes to perceived physical attraction and self esteem, physical appearance matters what ever their age. (S. Harter, 1 p 144). However for female adolescents, body image can become quite important, they may become obsessed with their weight, which could lead to anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Advertising today could well be to blame for many of these slimming disorders, as they seem to give out the message that women are all built very tall and slim. Products on the market seem to be able to transform a plain looking girl into beautiful young women. In other words advertising is responsible for presenting the perfect female, which many adolescents females will model themselves on. Support for this view comes from a study by (Garner et al 180). (Garner et al - 180 in Gross). On the other hand male adolescents today have as much pressure to conform to the stereotype male that advertising encourages. The adolescent males are encouraged by advertising to wear nice clothes, wear makeup and use an aftershave that is irresistible to women. If a male adolescent has high self- esteem then he may not feel the need to conform to the advertised stereotype. He may choose to have his own identity.

Identity is one of the problems, which may cause an adolescent to suffer "storm and stress". An adolescent may be thinking more about the future and what they want to do with their lives. Erikson felt that to be a fully developed adult an adolescent should choose their roles in life and stick to them. (Erikson, in Psychology A Level 000).

Cheap University Papers on Is adolescence necessarily a period of "storm and stress".

However people now do not tend to stay in the same career all their lives. Erikson' idea of a psychosocial moratorium gives an adolescent time to try a career or lifestyle out before they are fully committed, therefore if the adolescent has tried various careers and lifestyles they should go on to have a good adult identity. (Erikson, in Gross 1). However some adolescents do not have a choice in life, they have to accept the lifestyle and career they have, as they do not have the self-esteem to go out and do something different. However Simmons and Rosenberg (175) found that adolescents had lower self - esteem at the beginning of the adolescent stage therefore this may not really obstruct them from making bad life or career choices, As most career and lifestyle choices are not made at the beginning of adolescence. (Simmons and Rosenberg 175) Coleman and Hendry (10) also agreed that adolescents do not have low self-esteem at the beginning of adolescence and if they do, it is only a small amount of adolescents that have a bad self- image. Adolescents tend to avoid identity crises by using what Coleman calls the "Focal theory" rather than dealing with problems all at once they tend to deal with different problems at different times. (Coleman 174 in Gross 1). An adolescent's identity could well be brought about by the experiences and personality they have.

As a child becomes an adult, their parents may find it hard to let their children have their own independence. Adolescents may not really want to cut the parental ties, but the adults on the other hand may have problems with their child becoming independent. (Bandura 17 in Gross 1). A Childs personality may decide whether they are going to be independent or not. Up until the child starts puberty they do not really have any major problems, but when they start the puberty stage their identification with same sex parent is weakened, but their dependence on the opposite sex parent strengthens. (Freud and daughter in Gross 1). On the other hand a teenager could cut all parental ties and become more dependent on their friends, as their friends could be going through similar experiences and their parents may describe their behaviour as "just going through a stage"(Offer et al 181, in Gross). However if an adolescent is going through a family crisis at the time of puberty for example, a divorce between their parents, then the pressure on the teenager will intensify. (Rutter et al 176 in Gross). This may cause the teenager to become more independent as they may resent their parents, for getting divorced, and leave home. The family in which and adolescent is living in at the time of puberty, can make a difference to how a teenager handles puberty, in many countries they celebrate the coming of puberty.

In different parts of the world the transition between childhood and adulthood varies greatly. Erikson recognised that mothers from different cultures must teach trusting in ways that are consistent with their traditions. Studies by Margaret Mead have shown that boys and girls in Samoa did not have the same difficulties as western teenagers. Samoan teenagers growing sexuality is dealt with openly and they are not made to feel ashamed, unlike western teenagers. (Mead in Psychology A Level 000). However Freeman (18) criticised Meads theory, he thought that Mead had not been close enough to the Samoan's to get a real picture. Freeman gave evidence that Meads theories were not accurate, he had spoken to one of the Samoan women and she had admitted lying to Mead. (Freeman 18 in Psychology A level 000). If becoming an adult was made a special occasion in all cultures, then this in it self may help to ease the passage of childhood to adulthood.

There are many conclusions to whether adolescence is a time of "storm and stress". From psychological stages to physiological stage, in an ideal world a child would reach puberty and go in and out of adolescence with the support of their family, with no crisis. However as this is not an ideal world, the main conclusion would be that adolescence is a stage that everyone has to go through, but how it is handled depends on the individual teenager and their environment.

The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger, opens with the narrator, Holden Caufield telling a story of three days that changed his life. Holden was expelled from numerous schools, due to his lack of interest and great depression. This all started when his younger brother, Allie, died. Although Holden has had a tough life, he compares his problems to the worlds, and his seem insignificant. Holden is ashamed and disgusted at the way people treat each other. Holden gets an insight into what the world is really about and wants no part in this evil, corrupt place. He begins to worry about the symbol of innocence, children, and that someday they will be infected by society. He wants to become the catcher in the rye, so that he can stop the children falling off the cliff into adulthood. He eventually comes to terms with this fantasy being an impossibility, and goes insane.

Holden is a very confused seventeen year old boy, who throughout the novel is searching for meaning. The death of his younger brother Allie, depresses him extremely during the novel, and it leads to him not being able to communicate well with anyone. Because of this lack of communication with the world, he thinks that no one will listen or talk to him.

"People never notice anything,"

(Salinger 14 8)

Holden can not form lasting, meaningful relationships with people, as he is afraid of loss. He becomes very withdrawn and childish after his brothers death, and has a sense of isolation from the world. His parents choose not to talk to Holden about Allie's death, as he was very connected to him and may cause more unnecessary trauma.

"But it wasn't just that he was the most intelligent member

of the family. He was also the nicest…"

(Salinger 14 )

Holden views the world as an evil place that is full of 'phonies'. These 'phonies' are people that are not true to themselves or each other. Throughout the novel Holden has many encounters with these phony people, and finds that the center of there world is to look good. The core of this phony society is money. It all has to do with how much you make and what you do with it.

" Goddamn money. It always ends up making you blue

as hell."

(Salinger 14 10)

Money makes the world go around, and if you do not have it your descriminated against. It is the center of most relationships and Holden can not see why. When Holden meets Maurice, the pimp he is disgusted at the way he treats Sunny. He use's Sunny to live and in a way is betraying her. He gets most of the profit and Holden can not understand why someone would use someone else for financial gain.

All Holden wants to do is to talk to an adult about his personal problems. Money is nothing to him, and he will even pay a prostitute, not to have sex with, but to sit down and talk to him.

"…I just didn't want to do it. I felt more depressed than

sexy, if you want to know the truth."

(Salinger 14 87)

Holden wants to find out about her, but she is unable to respond. This is probably due to the way that Maurice has treated her, and she to can not form meanigful relationships. Once again he finds that people are not interested in listening to him, and he gets more depressed.

Possibily the only people that listen to Holden, excluding Pheobe, are the nuns. The way that people treat the nuns really makes Holden upset, because they seem pure to him. Again, they are descriminated due to their money status. Holden describes their suitcases, which is a way of seeing how wealthy someone is.

"They were these very inexpensive-looking suitcases

the ones that aren't genuine leather or anything."

(Salinger 14 7)

Holden can not come to terms with people judging one another just for the suitcase they have. No matter how kind or generous that person is, they will be treated differently over financial status. Holden believes that money has the biggest effect on society, and like the new testement says, "the love of money is the root of all evil."

Holden wants to escape this phony world ruled by money and evil. Holden, throughout his search for answers, finds only falseness, and a world that he does not want to live in. He turns to the symbol of innocence in society, the children, for guidence. Every kid that he meets immediatly lights up his eyes, and gives him a sense of hope.

"God, I love it when a kids nice and polite when you tighten

their skate for them or something Most kids are.

They really are."

(Salinger 14 107-108)

When he heard a boy singing the catcher in the rye song, he wanted to become the catcher. If Holden was the catcher he could prevent the children from growing up into such an evil world.

" if a body catch a body coming through the rye."

(Salinger 14 104)

This is Holden's turning point because it made him happy and gave him hope. He truly thought that he could become the catcher and save Pheobe and the rest of the children from growing up. As the story progresses, and Holden goes deeper and deeper into insanity, he comes arcross some graffiti on the schools wall. He quickly rubs it off so that no children would see it and become infected. He comes across another graffitied wall, but this time the words are scatched in. It is at this point where Holden comes to the realization that he is helpless.

" The thing with kids is if they want to grab for the gold ring,

you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall

off, they fall off, but it is bad if you say anything to them."

(Salinger 14 10)

This happens when Pheobe is on the carousel reaching out to touch the gold ring. By this time Holden has come to the realization that he can not be the catcher, and therefore can not stop Phoebe from entering adulthood. The gold rings are ironically not gold but brass plated iron. This is a symbol of the adult world which 'wears' a shiny surface to hide the truth.

Holden has told his story from the mental institution. He has told us what he told D.B, and at the end is sorry to have even told it at all. Leading up to his breakdown, many things made Holden upset. Aside from his insignificant personal problems, he tells us of his deep sorrow for how the world is, and how people treat each other. It is a phony place that he can not do anything to change. Growing up is an inevitable part of life, and nothing, not even the catcher in the rye can stop it.

What do Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Oprah Winfrey have in common? They are the hosts of the most popular talk shows. I mostly watch David Letterman's late show on CBS. There is a certain type of pattern in the show, and many other show hosts such as Craig Kilborn and Conan OBrien are sharing this pattern. Although the Nielsen Media Research shows that the rating for such talk shows is not as high as other TV shows like Friends nowadays, I still want to make an in-depth analysis of talks shows because there is no such talk shows in the country I came from; therefore I think they represent the American culture in a certain way.

The requirements to be a talk show host are the ability of giving a good speech and sense of humor. David Letterman has them both. Hosts need these qualities to conduct the show, to bring enthusiasm and excitement. Can you imagine what would happen if a host has nothing else to say five minutes after the beginning of the show? Dave never has this kind of problem because he is wisely funny, talkative, and mean. He can make his monologue interesting. Dave always starts the show with about five short jokes. Many jokes are about current issues with celebrities. I personally hate people who make fun of the private lives of others, but I also understand that the subject would be attractive. After all, minding other peoples business and private life is the medias main mission; it's also part of the American culture. Actually I think it's true for all cultures around the world. The fact that paparazzi chasing after Princess Diana and reporters hunting Monica Lewinsky says it all.

I don't know if Letterman comes up with all the materials or someone writes the jokes for him, but one thing I do know is, those jokes are the root of the show; not only do they keep the program running, they also reflect modern American culture.

Time management is significant to a show. It takes skills to tell jokes, interview guests, and have guests perform in one hour. Dave does know how to control the pace of his show. Most of the time everything goes on at the speed of his schedule, so the show looks pretty smooth and the audience feels comfortable and not rushed.

Help with essay on Talk Shows and American Culture

Are interviews and jokes the only two things going on in the show? Certainly not. After his five jokes, three guests show up. The guests are always Mr. or Miss Popularity, such as actors, comedians, sport stars or musicians. Who wants to watch the show if Dave invites a pizza guy or mailman? Eight out of ten times the combination of the guests is one movie star, one singer, and one TV actor. Ive seen Dan Miller, Demi Moore, David Duchovny, Michael Jordan, and Joan Osborne and many others on the show. Needless to say, its full of another type of commercials. The show plays clips of films or TV shows with the guests in, so that they can promote their movies or shows. As long as those famous stars show up, the number of audience members keeps increasing. Thus, Letterman and his guests get full benefits of the show. More and more people watch David Letterman and the actors shows or movies, or buy the musicians CDs. Eventually, Dave and his guests are the winners; they get all the money in their pockets. Isnt money a big part of American culture?

The guests' clothing and hairstyling show the shapes of the American culture as well as the jokes. It seems that the host and guests have some sort of uniform. Dave and most male guests wear suits only. Female guests have more varieties of dresses. It's a trend to show their beauty by covering only half of their body surfaces. Sexy women have become a vital element of the show. Its a tradition for women to show their bodies because its just a stereotyped female character. Some guests, especially musicians, have their own styles; they wear whatever they think looks good, even if it looks weird to an ordinary person. Its not unusual to see a bunch of holes on their shirts and pants. Cutting clothes has been a part of American culture since the 60s.

The guests need not be funny. If they have nothing to say, Dave asks them questions to start a subject. The subject covers almost everything. Dave and the guests talk about people, movies, music, cars, food products, sports, politics, and even toilets. They rarely say anything about environmental problems, education, or economy except at the times when Hilary or the governors of New Jersey and Minnesota went to the show. Sometimes they attack people personally. Once Jay Leno took out a ball, which was shaped in the form of a Spice Girl's head and he pumped it until it exploded.

If a show were an hour long, the actual length would be forty-five minutes. Applause from the audience, commercials, and the live band take fifteen minutes. After Dave shows up at the stage with his two beautiful assistants, whom they call "interns", the audiences stand up, scream, whistle, and clap for quite a while. They do the same thing when guests show up. Once George Clooney went to the show, and the audiences did their routine job, but they wouldnt stop even after Clooney sat down. It seems that super stars take a big portion of the list with the most respectful people for people under 0 years of age.

TV commercials and advertisements in general are also part of the A-culture. The quality varies; "Jim the Hammer" on Central New York's local network has been the bad commercial my friends and I laugh about, while there are some very good commercials like the ones in Super Bowl. I hope there is a law that regulates how exaggerated a commercial or advertisement can be. An Oakley Sunglasses ad I saw says their sunglasses are bullet proof. If someone shoots me in the eyes and I get blinded or even worse, die, will they be responsible? Another one I saw is a box containing printing paper. On the box it says "% jam free." How could paper be jam free? If there's a paper jam, the problem is with the printer, not with the paper! If I had the manufacturer's phone number, I would call and tell them that I put in a hundred pieces of paper and only ninety-eight came out.

Another fact is the racism. White people are invited more often than the others are. Its a show for whites; its unusual to see a black or Asian face on the show. Dave may not be a racist; the problem is with the Hollywood and Americans in general. Although Caucasians are the majority of the population, the number of African and Asian Americans are not small. Among 166 Oscar ex-nominees, only one of them was black. The ratio of black to white people must be much higher than that. Asians have been stereotyped to be kung-fu stars or gangsters. Therefore, the filmmakers prefer Caucasian actors or actresses, which explains why there are not so many non-white famous actors in Hollywood.

The material and language that they use on the show varies from Z to triple x. Sometimes they curse, have some sort of sexual contact, or kiss the same genders. Youngsters are too young for those. If you dont have kids around, David Letterman is a good show; it can help vaporize the stress, make you laugh, and it reflects pop culture.

This fiction story takes place at Welton Academy, a private school only for boys in Vermont, USA in the year 15.

One of the main characters is Mr. John Keating. He is the new English professor at Welton. When he was young, he was a student of this school and now he comes back in order to try teaching differently than all the others. And he succeeds in doing that. He wants the pupils not to simply read and interpret the poems famous poets have written, but he wants them to write poems themselves. He wants them to become individual persons, to forget acting how they get told to and make their lives extraordinary. Mr. Keating is an enthusiastic person. He really wants to reach his aims and nearly does everything for that. When he comes into class for the first time, to confuse the boys and make them paying attention, he is wearing a shirt and a tie but no jacket, like all the other teachers. He is sitting in front of the room, staring out the window and not saying a word. To convince the students of his different lessons, he does very strange things. When they have their first lesson, tells the boys to take their books and to rip out the first few pages.

Step by step, John Keating shows the students to make their lives extraordinary and to give them an individual touch. His most important motto is CARPE DIEM, what means SEIZE THE DAY!

He shows the boys the beauty of poetry. But the story takes a bad end. Because of careless actions, he gets fired.

The other important characters in that story are the students, who's lives have totally changed since Mr. Keating is teaching them. There are Todd Anderson, Knox Overstreet, Neil Perry, Charlie Dalton, Steven Meeks, Richard Cameron, George Hopkins and Pitts.

Sixteen-year-old Todd Anderson is a new student at Welton Academy. He is a calm and shy person who doesn't speak much about his thoughts and feelings. His brother was at Welton too and he was one of the best students there ever. So Todd has to stand a very hard pressure because everyone, his parents and his teachers, want him to get as well grades as his brother got.

Todd's self esteem is very low at the beginning. When the boys should read out their self-written poems the first time, Todd refuses to recite his one. But Mr. Keating doesn't accept a no. So he instructs him to come out and to stand in front of the class. Then Keating does an experiment with him. First he tells him to shout very loud, in order to forget his fears. Then Todd has to look at a picture, to close his eyes and to cry out the impressions, that come to his mind. Now there is a poet speaking. Keating cheers.

Todd Anderson's personality changes until the end of the book. He gets more self confident, courageous and he bothers to act how he wants to. He tells what he thinks and lives his own life. Carpe diem helps him with that.

Knox Overstreet is also sixteen years old. He is an extrovert person. At the beginning of the semester, when he is invited to the dinner at the house of his fathers' friends, he gets to know Chris. She's the girlfriend from Chet, the son of his father's friend. At the first time, he sees her, he falls in love. He isn't able to concentrate on the lessons any more. And when he has to write a poem, it is always about Chris. He nearly tries everything, that Chris falls in love with him. At a party, Chet hits him because he touched his girlfriend. But Knox doesn't punch him. Chris often tells him to stop longing for her because Chet is likely to kill him, but Knox doesn't matter. He loves Chris and doesn't give up, until they kiss romantically under the full moon.

Neil Perry is the roommate of Todd Anderson. He helps him to become familiar with life at the boarding-school. His father is a very strict, suppressing and authoritarian person and Neil suffers from that. He always has to agree with his father's plans and isn't allowed to have his own opinion, dreams, wishes and plans.

But then John Keating shows him another way to live. The motto, the poems and the Dead Poets Society club help him to realise his own dreams. He gets to know, that the acting-club still searches actors for the stage play A Midsummer night's Dream. Acting has always been one of Neil's dreams his father forbade. But now he has got so much self esteem, that he doesn't hear to the words of his father anymore and starts acting. He gets the roll of Puck, the central figure. He is very happy at the rehearsals and glad about his courage to act against his father. But his Dad soon comes to visit his son and to forbid him acting.

So he takes him home, after the scene. But Neil doesn't even think of living at his parents' house and doing the same as in former times-exactly the things his father wants him to do.

He is desperate and doesn't see another way, so he commits suicide.

Charlie Dalton is the shareholder of the group. He is a fanatic. Charlie calls himself Nuwanda to show the others how serious he is about all, they learn from Mr. Keating. He sees everything in an easy and relaxed way, maybe too easy. One night he brings two girls into he cave to the meeting of the Dead Poets Society where only boys are in. The others are very surprised. They want to get informed before someone starts such actions. But then, they are happy about it because hey have a lot of fun with them and girls are a very rare thing in their lives at the boys' school.

Charlie also writes a clandestine school paper article which contents the demand for girls at Welton Academy. That causes a big conference where Mr. Nolan, the headmaster wants to find out the author of this article. Suddenly there is a phone ring. Charlie opens his bag and takes a telephone out. Welton Academy, hello? he says for all to hear. He talks with the imaginated person on the phone and after some phrases he holds the receiver out to the headmaster. It's for you, it's God. He said we should have girls at Welton, Nuwanda says. this action causes many problems. As a punishment, he gets caned with a stick until his back is bloody. In the end he gets expelled because of his behaviour.

Steven Meeks is not as important in this story as the other boys. There aren't many facts about him to know. He is the clever one of he group. Especially in Latin he is a scholar. So the others always come to him when they have problems in school. They often come together in a study group o learn all together. Meeks is the Leader for sure.

How have the Shrzynecki's perspective of Australia altered in the first poems? How has language been used to convey this?

Change can occur in many different forms, one of the most powerful being a change in perspective. It can alter images of people, place, and even their path in life. The poems "Crossing the Red Sea", "Migrant Hostel", and "10 Mary Street", by Peter Shrzynecki, show a migrant families change in perspective of Australia as their experiences grow. The use of language has allowed their thoughts and emotions associated with their migration and new home land, to be explored. Similes, religious symbolism and bird imagery are just some of the techniques used to further the readers understanding of this traumatic journey in a families life.

The journey to Australia and the anticipation of a new home is the main theme in "Crossing the Red Sea". This poem deals with the varying emotions that the migrants face as they "watch a sunset they would never see again". There is a sense of nostalgia between these people of different backgrounds who were once enemies "Patches and shreds of dialogue Hung from fingertips".

Religious imagery is used throughout the poem to show the belief these people have that a higher being will help them to make a fresh start "Who was saying a prayer in thanksgiving For miracles". The poem refers to "Lazarus" who was the brother of Mary and Martha as well as a friend of Jesus. Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus and brought him back to life. This displays their sense of hopefulness and anticipation that God will help them to leave their war torn lives behind and begin again.

The contrast between night and day is also used as symbolism in this poem. "All night" they feel more confident to speak out and share their emotions. The night gives them protection and allows them to be comfortable. However, "Daybreak took away the magic of dreams", showing that with daybreak comes the return of reality. At night they can't be seen and so can't be singled out for voicing their opinion but this can not be done in daytime. Daylight is supposed to bring hope but the oxymoron, "A blood rimmed horizon", displays that their hope is burdened as they are carrying the burden of war and its scars.

In "Crossing the Red Sea", although the lives of the migrants have been traumatic, they are looking toward the future in the hopes that their new life will be much better than their last and they may finally live in peace.

"Migrant Hostel" looks at the first place the Shrzynecki's stayed at when they arrived in Australia. It deals with the hardships and restrictions they faced " A barrier at the main gate Sealed off the highway" and the sense of disappointment they have as they had high hopes for their life in Australia.

Throughout this poem, bird imagery is used to show their feeling of being in a temporary life. The simile "We lived like birds of passage" shows their belief that they have no home; they feel as though they are constantly moving. "Like a homing pigeon circling to get its bearings" gives the impression that they are trying to understand where they are and what's going on with their lives. They were never quite sure when they would leave or where they would go.

There are many symbols used in this poem to show the restrictions placed on the Shrzynecki's. "A barrier at the main gate" symbolises the restrictions they encounter. They needed "its sanction" or [permission in order to do anything. They are powerless to fight it and the "reprimand" of the barrier makes them feel they are being treated like children. They were "partitioned off at night" which meant they were constantly separated and were often left "Wondering" if they would ever be free. Many of these migrants escaped camps in Europe, to come to the land of freedom, only to end up in another camp.

In this poem the Shrzynecki's perspective is different from "Crossing the Red Sea". Their anticipation and hope for a new life is dying because they are stuck in the hostel. But while they are trying to begin their new life, their old life is dying. If both lives die, they will end up with nothing, "To pass in and out of lives that had only begun or were dying". Their hope has now turned to despair and their anticipation is now disappointment.

The first house the Shrzynecki's lived in is the subject of the poem "10 Mary Street". They worked so long and hard to achieve their dream of freedom and now they have it. However, their home is being threatened "(The while block has been gazetted for industry)" and they face their dreams being destroyed once more.

Imagery of keys is used throughout this poem. The simile "Each morning, shut the house Like a well-oiled lock" shows that they are proud of their first house in Australia and they want to keep it secure. "Hid the key" symbolises power and control. They own the house and no one can take it from them. "Inheritors of a Key" is illustrative of unity and reorientation. It is their key to the country and if their house is pulled down, they will have nothing. It shows a sense of despair surrounded by a sense of love and hope.

The irony of this poem is that, while their lives have completely changed, they are seeking to keep a sameness. They use their house as a fortress to pretend they never left their homeland, "Kept pre-war Europe alive with photographs and letters, Heated discussions And embracing Gestures". The symbolism throughout the poem shows the difficulty for Peter, as he is now partly Australian. He is torn between two cultures "drank Raw vodka or cherry brandy And smoked like A dozen puffing Billies". This representation shows how change can affect people differently, even if they are in the same situation.

The Shrzynecki's perspective has once again changed in this poem. They are now happy and contented with their new life "For nineteen years We departed/ to school and work" and upset at the fact that it might be destroyed. They have progresses from their feelings of excitement and anticipation as they traveled to Australia, to feelings of resentment when they were restricted in the migrant hostel and now they are happy that they have a new home of their own and a life that they control.

Peter Shrzynecki's poems show a variety of change in perspectives. Through the use of language techniques, he has been able to allow a common audience to understand the hardships his family faced. He has shown how powerful changing a persons perspective can be, it can even change their whole attitude towards life.

Memories of Tokyo

Living in a foreign country is an experience in itself, but having the opportunity to live in the largest city in the world, Tokyo, was another. Moving to Japan was a great experience because of the entire different culture, endless things to do, and more family time. Mostly everything that I went through in my lengthened vacation was positive, but on the other hand, some aspects also were negative.

Imagine the largest city you've ever been to in America and double it, maybe triple it. Tokyo is the largest metropolitan city in the world, and I had the chance to live there my junior year of high school. The fun never runs out when it comes to Japan. There are endless things to do in the city. Each weekend seemed like there was something new to do, whether it was Karaoke with good friends, skiing at the ski-dome, or attending a sumo match. The transition from big city living to life in Ontario, Oregon is still very difficult. Tokyo provides everything anyone could ever need. Some of my greatest memories of living in the city were just exploring the city on the trains and subways. We would jump on a train and not even care where it took us because we knew that wherever we ended up, we could find something to do. Exploring the endless city and trying to find my way back home was something I enjoyed. Also, exploring other aspects of Japanese life such as their extremely different culture was a great experience.

The Japanese way of life is like nothing I had imagined. When I flew in for the first time, I had a severe case of culture shock. Getting used to being a foot taller than almost the whole population, and I feeling like an alien in another world, was difficult. I felt like I was in the movie, "Planet of the Apes" because they all look different than I do and it was hard to communicate with the people. Whether it was ordering food at a restaurant, or telling a taxi driver where to go, I had to use my hands to communicate more than my mouth. Japanese customs are much different then the American way also. When greeting another person, bowing is the way to be polite, rather than a handshake or hug. Japanese people get offended if you do not follow their way of life in their country. They are extremely passive. If somebody is loud and obnoxious, they simply ignore them and stay quiet. Another aspect of their culture is their food. Japanese food has become my favorite food. Everything from sushi, noodles and meat dishes are delicious.

The main reason my family decided to move to Japan was to have more family time together. My dad had been traveling back and forth to the states just to be at home for one week of the month. Spending more time with my dad has definitely benefited the well being of my family. We were able to go to church as a family, sightsee, and just have a good time together.

Although my time in Japan was a great experience, there were some downfalls to living in a foreign country. For instance, I missed out on part of my high school because I lived there my junior year. I did attend an American School while in Japan, but it was not the same as a high school in America. This school had a university atmosphere. The classes were extremely strenuous, and I had no time because of the large amounts of homework given each day. The bus ride to the school was an hour each way, which took a lot out of me since I had such a large chunk of homework all the time. Also, I had no friends for the first few weeks I was there. This soon changed after I began to play football and basketball for the school teams. Church also gave me the opportunity to make friends with other people I shared common interests with.

Overall, my family's decision to live in Japan was a great decision. We had the time of our lives exploring a new land. Our fun never ran out as we learned a new culture, a new language, and adapted to big city living.

In the early 80's a revolution in music took place the creation of a music television station. A new way to take pleasure in music was born. The creation of MTV is an important event in American history. MTV has affected our culture and the entertainment and music industry as well. In many ways, it has expanded the music industry and influenced youth to better the world. In a different perspective, one can say that MTV has corrupted the value of American life. Some believe that it has harmed the youth of America through the promotion of violence and sex, furthermore commercialized American society, and monopolized the entertainment industry. Whatever the view, MTV definitely has a prominent role in American culture.

Throughout the years, MTV has gained great power of influence over youth through television and music. The average child watches 7 hours of television per day. In this large amount of time a child's future can be greatly affected, so what he or she watches should be chosen wisely. Music today contains explicit content such as drugs, sex and violence, and adolescents are constantly exposed to such issues through music and with MTV's help, through television as well. Not only music videos, but shows such as Jackass, with their dangerous acts of stupidity, and The Osbournes encouraging drinking and the use of profanity. One could say MTV is promoting crime and violence. Furthermore, certain events which MTV promotes such as "Springbreak" contain drug use, sex and violence and in some cases even death. According to statistics, the average number of violent acts seen by a child by the age of eighteen is 00,000. There is a constant debate whether violence can be blamed on American television and music. Although the evidence in this debate is extensive against MTV, supporters still believe that MTV is entertaining and shouldn't be blamed for the problems that face America's youth.

Many critics of MTV and the American music industry feel that the music industry does not care about values and American culture, rather the whole part of the relationship with the teen is just to turn them upside down and shake all the money out of their pockets. Even more critics agree and feel that MTV is a mockery of American culture. Shows such as the Tom Green show and The Andy Dick show, which aired on MTV a few years ago, display gruesome acts of stupidity, which to some is not at all amusing and can in no way be seen as entertainment.

Some also feel that MTV has brought about many stereotypes. Blacks are often perceived as violent sex driven gangsters on the station through numerous music videos. Women are displayed solely as sex symbols, lacking any integrity or value as human beings. Other minorities are shown in a archetypal manner, brought about by their white-male counterparts. After the many years of fighting for equal rights in America, critics feel MTV has emerged and turned everything around.

Do my essay on MTV: A Threat to American Culture? CHEAP !

MTV uses commercial logic. This being the idea that everything is dedicated to the idea of selling something. The teen's power in America has risen throughout the years since certain products and music go by what they, the consumer, wants. MTV is like a 4 hour infomercial. Sometimes it's an advertisement paid for by a company to sell a project. Sometimes it's a music video, which in other terms is an infomercial to sell a record label. Sometimes it's a set filled with trendy clothes to sell a look that includes production of that set. MTV is the ultimate gatekeeper of the American industry because so many people watch it and if an artist is on there the chances of success increase greatly. With MTV's power to influence American and worldwide youth, it has been able to bring across many messages about serious issues as well as about what clothes Britney Spears says are 'in'.

MTV has so much power in American culture because it consists of television and music, two very important aspects of communication. Music was given more importance and value since now it was not just for mere entertainment, but rather to bring about change in the world. Music is changing and connecting with a whole new audience, increasing sales and changing the way people perceive music. Before MTV, rap music was almost undetectable in America. Now, after the promotion from MTV, rap music is one of the biggest and most listened to genres in music.

Although it has been blamed with much damage to American society, MTV has also given back and hosted many benefit concerts and fund-raisers. It has raised money for causes such as hunger and worldwide poverty. It in many ways brought the people of America closer together in its pursuit to create a better country for its youth. MTV has given American youth a club where they can always belong. They were given a channel of their very own where anyone could be a member and a door was opened which allowed adolescents to interact with their role-model on a more personal basis. MTV keeps American youth updated with every day news and events occurring worldwide. It keeps them aware of certain issues and problems they must face.

MTV has also brought blacks and whites closer together, primarily because of pop culture. Today hip-hop, rap, reggae and R&B have been greatly accepted in the music industry and have had great success. Blacks were given more respect and were looked up upon by the youth of America. In addition, Latin and Middle Eastern music have also been greatly accepted. Women, although still seen as sexual symbols, have become powerful figures in the entertainment industry and equal to all. Women solo acts and groups have become very popular. Women were a great addition to the rise of our economy. MTV has also promoted and encouraged creative music. Many different kinds of music have emerged from dance to country due to MTV's publicity and support of various new artists. Without MTV many artists may not have achieved the success that they had.

MTV, as one can see, although containing many bad qualities, has brought about some good in the American culture and entertainment and music industry. In addition to the benefits above, MTV has helped our economy remain on top. MTV helped build the booming multi-million dollar entertainment and music industry we have today. With publicity and constantly keeping performers in the public eye, various artists have been recognized and risen to stardom. MTV shaped stars into teen role-models and with publicizing certain images it promoted an idealized teen lifestyle. Stars can express themselves in just about which ever way they please and can set themselves with a certain image they want perceived of them by the public. MTV is a vehicle for promoting trends and new styles. It helps to shape what is 'popular' in America.

MTV is a prominent force in American society today. It has shaped the way that the country, and now the world, views many issues. It has even helped expand the American economy and made numerous entertainers wealthy. Although many critics view MTV as harmful to American society, through promotion of various dangers to youth, it remains the leader in music entertainment. MTV helps shape our nation and its culture; it is one of the most influential creations in America today.
