My Personal Experience

High school just wasn't for me. High school just isn't for a lot of people, but adult society has its grasp on today's youth, trying to manipulate them to conform to whatever they think is an acceptable teenager. They need to let it go. Although today's teenagers are not as experienced in the ways of life, they among the smartest people in the world. Teenagers should be educated on what rights they have and how they can use them to their advantage. In my personal experience, I found a way around the system, and I believe everyone can. Because when it comes down to it, you don't always have to choose the path that is laid out in front of you. There are other options.

Now, I grew up in Garden City, I always did pretty good in school , and always considered myself a pretty contempt child, but my mother pasted away in August 1 when I was twelve. Since then I've basically never respected any adult guardian figures in my life. I became severely depressed and uncontrollably rebellious. I absolutely hated going to school. I hated just being there, and I hated my teachers but mostly I despised all the happy people. I always caused as much mayhem as I could and just flat out refused to do anything. Maybe it was a lack of motivation, or maybe it was severe depression, but whatever the case I continued this way for years, despite constant reminders from my teachers of my brightness and great potential.

When I got to high school my hatred for the school ran even deeper. For this is when I rapidly started to become more and more aware of their subtler Nazi ideals. For instance, there is almost a complete lack of student's rights, including but not limited to Students may be subject to random search and seizures by school officials at any time, a strict guilty until proven innocent guideline , and the is no true freedom of expression of any sort. It is absolutely ridiculous that they impose these rules and regulations onto students that are in actuality American citizens just like every other American citizen. As a matter of fact there are probably illegal immigrants that have more rights than high school students. I could no longer stand for this complete and udder violation of my morality and beliefs, so in December 00 a few months after I turned 16, I dropped out of high school and moved with my sister to Liberal.

Dropping out was probably the greatest feeling of liberation and trepidation mixed into one. Liberation, because I was free to finally make decisions in my life about my future and about my everyday life. Trepidation because I had to make those decisions in my life, about my future and about my everyday life. It made me nervous to think about all the responsibility that now laid in my hands. But at the same time I think it helped me mature faster.

I decided that I needed to take some initiative and start making some of those decisions.

So in February 00 I decided to go get my General Educational Development (G.E.D.) diploma. This was the first step into my future. With this I would be able to go to a community college, later transfer to a four year university and eventually receive a masters degree in business so that one day I may full-fill my dream of entrepreneurship and open a music store.

Getting my G. E. D. was a lot simpler that I had imagined it to be. I had to take five practice tests and five final tests. I went three nights a week and I was able to accomplish this goal in less than a month. I received my actual diploma in the mail a few weeks after. I have to admit I was a bit nervous about taking it in the first place. I didn't think I was really ready. When I received my test results via ground mail, I was extremely delighted to see that I scored in the 5th percentile of test scores compared to that of high school seniors around the country. I was so excited, that I determined that I need to make another major decision in my life. I decided that I needed to get a job.

With a strong feeling of good fortune on my side, I went to go look for a job the next day. And to my surprise the interviewer at my first stop was extremely fascinated by the fact that a 16 year old able to receive a G.E. D. diploma. I was hired on the spot and within a week I had a key to the store and was being trained on opening and closing. I was completely ecstatic about my life and the way things were heading. I was happier than I had ever been in school. I was so happy in fact, that I decided I might actually be ready to go to college. I mean after all, everything else was working out for me.

So that summer, after a few months of working I decided it was time for me to move back to Garden City and enroll in college. I have my G.E. D. and my first job experience. I am set. All I had to do was go to the college and fill out some paper work for financial aid and I was in. My confidence is soaring and my attitude couldn't be better. This is it, here is my chance to prove all my teachers wrong. To prove everyone wrong. This is my opportunity to get where I want and never look back. To do want I want with my life and do it how everyone said I couldn't.

Now I suppose I actually have to pass everything. It will be a task and great leaning experience. I believe I can do it. But if I can't, I'll figure something out.

Have you ever noticed how some things just seem to stick with you? Memories pulled into the forefront of your mind merely by a single look, the lightest touch, or the faintest sound? The human mind is an odd thing. The slightest similarity to an event that could have happened ages ago could trigger entire stories of vivid images to fly through your mind in astounding detail.

We fill the places in which we live with objects. Each object has a memory tied to it, as though a motion picture is encased in the very atoms it is made of. The half open book lying spine up on your dresser, pulling your mind back to a wondrous world of fantasy and make-believe, without needing to be opened. The pair of mittens on a shelf, knitted by your grandmother, may bring back memories of nights spent huddled around a fireplace. Music sliding out of the radio, grandmother sitting in her old rocker, adding the soft click-clacking of her knitting needles to the cacophony of music, the rain pelting the window and sliding down the sidings of the house, and the crackling of the fire.

As I look around my room, I am assaulted by a veritable swarm of memories. Some joyous, some saddening. And some that recall that innocent mindset that seems inherent in children. It is a memory of the latter sense that strikes me when I look at my old dresser. My great grandfather built it as a wedding present to my great grandmother, and it emanates a warm feeling of timelessness. And a memory of long ago…

The wind blew softly through the fields of tall, country grass surrounding my grandmother's farmhouse, giving a visual accompaniment to the faint chattering of the grasshoppers that dwell there. Today was the day. It had to be. My brothers and I had planned this for the entire week we had been down here, smothering in the unbearable heat from the sun over the flat Saskatchewan plain. The oldest of us, Shawn, had thought it all up. We would take a day or two living in the forest that lay on my grandmother's land. It was a brilliant idea! Lipstick disappeared from the parent's dressing room, knives and twine from the garden shed. Our sleeping bags were secured tightly under our arms, along with some old empty margarine containers. With our provisions gathered so, the three of us, intrepid adventurers indeed for a handful of children, with the oldest no older than ten years old, the youngest only seven, set out on our bold journey.

At last! We parted the thick leaves of an overhanging tree, and plodded on through into the dim forest. Lipstick came out, and sloppy lines were scrawled over our cheekbones and foreheads, filling us with the imagined glory of a party of barbarians, traversing new land and claiming it in the name of the Viking Horde. Stout sticks served us as staves, both to aid in covering ground in the imagined treacherous terrain, and to avail ourselves against any enemy threats from cultures native to this strange, unknown land. Pieces of bark tied around our chests with twine served as wondrous armour, surely impenetrable by any weapon from any foe we may come across.

And so commenced our day of exploration and discovery. Just outside the forest of this fearfully new land was a great vast garden, with sweet peas and raspberries growing in plentiful bounty. The natives surely were fools for leaving such a treasure unguarded, and it fell victim to Viking raids. The victors slid back into the woods with margarine containers stuffed to bursting with the harvest of kings, and faces stained red with the juice of raspberries, adding to the horrific visage accomplished by the savage lipstick face paint.

Many great sights came to the eyes of our intrepid heroes. Abandoned stashes of tin cans from ages past, horse tack with iron buckles and rotting leather thongs. And a treasure surely left by some great scurvy pirate captain, forgotten by all and lost in the sands of time; an old wrought iron bed frame. Rust clung to the upright posts of the frame, and spider webs clung to the corners. A tree had begun to grow through the center of the bed. Truly, great providence had brought us to this place, which would become our fort for the remainder of our stay. Unrolled sleeping bags served as a roof over our heads, supported by the four posters which seemed to climb halfway to the heavens, to the eyes of a young child.

But by the time this great construction was completed by our valiant explorers, the raspberry stores had run out, and the sweet peas had been lost in the long trek to the fort. Shamed, with their bellies aching, the Viking horde surrendered to the might of the land, and plodded back out of the forest. Stout sticks were cast to the ground, perhaps to be found by some other adventurers in years to come. The hose coiled by the side of the house washed off the grime of their journey, and the savage markings on their face. Hands combed cobwebs from their hair, and twigs from their clothes. Our heroes were defeated, and, walking into the house with a downcast expression, the day came to an end.

And so you can see, that an object can hold an entire story, sometimes having nothing to do with the object in question. And childhood illusions of grandeur can awaken the imagination to such extents, as to bewilder adult spectators.

Animal Testing Argumentative Essay

Animal Testing has led to dramatic improvements in the quality and quantity of life throughout the world. The veracity of this matter is crucial to every individual due to the fact that the experiment that is done on the animals can save lives for the reason that it can bring new medicine to aid people's existence and reproduction. To all the scientists who are interested in animal issues and who think that it's immoral and it should be banned, the next few paragraphs might make you think otherwise. Animal testing offers results that benefit the well being of humans. It can enhance understanding of the group under examination, and amplify the development of cosmetic surgery.

Animal Testing can introduce effects which are beneficial to the health of individuals and animals. Scientific research on animals is excellent since it can help in finding cures for many diseases. All scientists should realize that animal research is brilliant for the reason that we are able to survive through countless diseases, and not expire after every cold. If scientists did not use animals for evolutionary purposes, we wouldn't be able to survive or reproduce. This is what has been keeping us alive until now. The world has accumulated many negative viruses and germs that by this point in history, the human race would have disappeared. Inuit's used to pass away with just one illness. Nowadays we have medicine that can keep us alive and help our bodies fight just about anything. The credit should be given to the animal testing that researchers do. Laboratory exercises, as well as classroom demonstrations involving live animals can be valuable as instructional aids. Every student should understand that every lab and information given, are tools that can improve and continue all the research which can help humans survive. Some people may say that the notion of using animals for human purposes is wrong, immoral and we should try to use another method to be able to get cures to medication. Animals are the closest species or group on earth that resembles the human race. If we want to get cures we need to try out the medicine before giving it out, otherwise researchers can end up killing people instead of saving them. If we decide not to use medicine, everyone would get illnesses form each other and pass them on.

Animal testing can augment understanding concerning the group under examination. More knowledge and resolutions about any topic can be found when we test animals. Several individuals may articulate that it is very selfish to consider only human needs. They would add that animals have just as much rights as humans. Those people don't understand that by testing animals it can be beneficial to the animals themselves. We can help animals survive as well. In addition, we are able to find out more about animals and get more knowledge about the growth of each species, and the possible effects that may arise in the future. Animal testing can be as simple as ringing a bell and feeding a dog, such as in Pavlov's experiment, in order to understand how animals learn. Pavlov and his co-workers "had found that if a piece of food is placed in a dogs mouth, saliva is produced reflexively. If a dog merely sees a piece of food, salivation occurs automatically" (Salem, No date). Those tests help understand behaviour. We as students learn this in an introductory course in phsychology. Every type of testing including how to educate a dog is beneficial. If we didn`t have methods on how to test our animals we would not have pets in our homes, due to fear of getting diseases, and disobediance that we will not want to have. Buy testing an animal on what triggers them like ringing a bell in order for them to sit, gives us sufficient knowledge on how to raise our own kids. If we would test animals this way, many animals would be killed because no one would want to adopt them because of disobedience.

Scientists do not test animals for fun. They will declare it is morally acceptable for human beings to use other animals, but that it is morally wrong to cause them unnecessary or avoidable suffering. "Research is carried out as humanely and ethically as possible. This has rightly resulted in the gradual reduction and elimination of animal testing in many of the research areas mentioned" (European Coalition of Positive People (ECPP), 00). Unfortunately, the testing of an animal can lead to death. Once the animal dies many cosmetic ingredients can come from those animals; Eye liner, lip stick, hair products and much more. Many people will say that using animals for those reasons is morally wrong. However, we are talking about a dead animal that will be thrown away. Many women suffer from breast cancer and need to rebuild their breasts. The method of using animals to create a permanent liner, in order to redesign a nipple can be used. Also, now a day's, women like to decorate their faces with permanent eye liner and permanent lip liner. All of this can bring money for advanced testing, for new cures.

Animal testing has helped the human race survive. We are able to help ourselves to be healthier physically and mentally. For those of you who still think that animal testing is immoral, ask yourselves one simple question. If you had cancer (G-d forbid), would you want to be able to find a cure for it? Countless diseases have been fought with this method, behavior of many species too. And cosmetic surgery has helped many needy patients to completely overcome their sickness. Animal testing is the smartest method of helping the world to be a better place!

Set in one of the many ready-built towns, known as favelas, around Rio de Janeiro, Cidade de Deus (City of God) is a harrowing depiction of a life in which innocence is an unknown word, and naivety will get you killed. The titular City of God is a breeding place for crime. Populated by under-privileged, poor, beaten down people, and controlled by the street gangs, with little chance of escape. Children are exposed to death and crime from birth, and there are few in the city who can earn enough to live on without having to supplement it with illegal activities. Despite this, and against all expectations, hope remains, and this hope is the central theme of the film.

This is a world of endemic and endless daily violence, and a seemingly casual disregard for the value of life. Children as young as eight-years-old carry guns and use them. Life expectancy is short. There is an acceptance that this is the way things are, that this is a section of the population doomed to repeat this lifecycle of violence.

The context of the fact-based film, explained in a voiceover at the beginning, is that a political decision was once made to relocate the unsightly, uneducated poor from the fashionable areas of Rio to government housing on the very edge of town, but of course the areas are slums with few urban amenities. The subtext, however, is that the poor are unable to obtain decent income.

What works best in City of God are the portrayals of the characters involved as well as the medium-shot theories that are evident, in terms of how they are depicted? They cover a good range of personalities and, curiously, make a case for the theory of hard-wired human behavior. Each major player in the movie is distinct, and we can sense how deep each ones inclination toward crime is due to natural-born tendencies as opposed to social and economic influences. One last major characters lust for vengeance eventually overpowers his sense of decency. It all suggests the ills of society are best cured not with blanket policies but instead with case-by-case strategies - some of these people could be reformed, some probably just cant be, and some will never need to be. All along we see glimpses of the humour, exuberance, and humanity of the characters.

The film spends some time outside the slum, at Rios beaches, illustrating how sad it is that such worlds exist in such close proximity and that these young people have to return to the slum at night. There is hope for escape. "Rocket" is the movies least interesting character. Although hes a resident of the slum, hes basically an observer who never does anything particularly dramatic. This allows us to keep our distance, so we experience the horrors of the favela more as a spectacle than as something in which were emotionally invested.

In the meantime, we are invited to look upon the gangland scene with sadness and some apprehension. As the film ends some time in the early 80s, we see new kids with guns picking up where the old kids left off; ready to start the cycle anew.

The film follows the Realist film theory as well as ideological criticism by portraying the raw material to such a wide scope that it is reality itself. The film is a construction against the background of gang violence throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's. In this brutal yet stirring tale about children struggling to survive, that idyllic perception is more than just dispelled, it is gunned down mercilessly like a rival gang member.

The direction is sharp and energetic in terms of film semiotics, and given the many gun fights and acts of violence the film contains, it is all the more credit to shoot and edit each in a different, yet equally effective, style, meaning that each is as interesting as the last. The photography is also excellent the early scenes are imbued with a rich golden glow, and as the story progresses, these changes to washed-out hues, add to the worsening nature of life in the city.

High on technique and drunk on attitude, the tale is presented with a combination of tried-and-true energetic techniques - tracking shots, split-screens, hand-held camera work, fast editing, period pop music, and swooshing pans and sound effects. The look is gritty, the depiction of gun violence is unflinchingly brutal, and the body count is high, all of which implying that the ability to use a firearm is a more important and prevalent trait than the ability to read and write.

Though some viewers may find the relentless style pacing and camerawork disorienting, and the story might have benefited from fewer characters, the image-bombardment style and multiple intertwining plots have a deliberate cumulative effect, namely to immerse us in this chaotic and mesmerizing cauldron of violence, death and struggle. We see what these people go through, and how many have to go through it. This is imaginative and challenging filmmaking

I wouldnt describe this powerful film as banal nor the plot muddied. A non-linear narrative helps understand how children can become occupied in violence and how cause and effect operate in the anarchic world of the favela. Some of the most beautiful scenes in the film are on the beach or at the party where all the characters demonstrate their humanity. Full of recriminations and reprisals, some genuine shocks, and overflowing with vitality, Meirelles' film is a fine piece of oppositional cinema.

When to Call the

Organization Doctor

Article review

"When to Call the Organization Doctor" is the name of the article chosen for review in this paper. The reason this article was selected was the manner in which it criticizes the use of outside consultants as a substitution for the four basic functions of the management process. This paper will compare "Organization Doctor" to the article "Management Zones Are They Safe?" as well as compare and contrast the reviewed article with the management process of my employer, Quest Diagnostics. I will make a recommendation for my employer in addition to making the argument that using an outside consultant is rarely necessary, especially to the point extent of deciding the strategic direction that an organization should head.

Write my Essay on Writer's choice for me

Reviewed Article Summary

In short, the article is about how managers are often too quick to use outside consultants for certain organizational restructuring. The author, Robert Llewellyn, makes the point that consulting firms sway managers with effective presentations for services that are time and again not necessary. Llewellyn uses the model of an individual cutting a finger, going to the E.R. and the doctor wanting to amputate without making a proper diagnosis. This example serves to illustrate that applying a prescribed theory takes more knowledge and assessment of a situation than simply observation and operation.

Article Comparison

The reading (from class) that "When to Call the Organization Doctor" best relates to is "Management Zones Are They Safe?" for the reason that both readings emphasize the management mistake of trying to control results instead of thinking. While "Organization Doctor" makes the case against using an outside source, "Zones" focuses more on management. Both articles, however, make the point of the need to evaluate situations more closely by putting more effort into thinking through solutions before implementing across the board changes. These articles also equally take the position that it is ultimately the responsibility of the manager to find the proper solution(s) so as the vital goals of the company are achieved. The company I work for, Quest Diagnostics, has both an example of trying to control results and one of thinking through and fully evaluating a situation.

Relative to Quest Diagnostics

First, the example of trying to control results rather than thinking situations through. After /11 my business unit tried to enhance employee safety with respect to our buildings' security by bringing in a security consultant. The specialist made a bevy of recommendations to our senior management most of which were implemented. However, after about two months of these security procedures being in place, an unauthorized person was able to gain access to the building without the use of a pass card, which permitted this individual to victimize some of the employees by stealing purses and other valuables. This occurred only after tighter security was put into place to prevent such episodes. The problem was not with the measures applied, but with ones that were not even considered. This occurrence came about because of management's failure to identify the real problem of an illicit entity's ability to easily enter the premises through other means than the consultant hired was able to foresee and correct.

Second, a case in point of Quest Diagnostics managers fully evaluating a situation instead of using quick-fix methods. My departmental managers over the past couple of years have taken more of an initiative to fully evaluate situations before hastily setting into practice one size fits all solutions. A perfect example of this has been the formation of employee satisfaction committees in response to increasing percentages of worker discontent and employee turnover. By evaluating employee surveys along with solutions offered by these committees, voluntary attrition has significantly decreased while employee contentment has somewhat increased. As a result of these moves, management has allowed itself to focus on other issues while the concern of worker dissatisfaction is addressed on a continual basis.

Recommendation

With consistent success of self-diagnosing and the remedying of predicaments, my recommendation to Quest Diagnostics is simply to say that we need to rely on the ability of supervisors and managers to be able to best identify problems and solutions. We at Quest must be able to trust our competence in result implementation along with our evaluating skills. I believe my business unit's management teams have shown a special affinity toward problem solving when the time and resources have been available. Using internal assets permits the company to save money as well as utilize managers and employees time more effectively.

Conclusion

Finally, there does not often appear to be a pressing need for a consultant to delegate the direction a company is heading. Managers must first learn to put themselves in charge through systemic-fit analysis to show where the organization is going before relying on an outside source to dictate its' path. Organization doctors should be used with respect to time, money and implementation expertise, not for the purposes of strategic leading. As long as there is a strong confidence in the abilities of management to plan, organize lead and control, businesses will be further be capable of self-fixing problems rather using than quick fixing methods.

With the pollution of industry, acid rain has become a serious problem in our world today. Acid rain is precipitation with below-normal pH, often the result of industrial pollution and automobile exhaust. Highly acidic rain can damage or destroy aquatic life, forests, crops and buildings, as well as posing a threat to human health.

The process that results in the formation of acid rain generally begins with pollution into the atmosphere of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. These Gases are released by automobiles, industrial operations such as refining oil into gasoline, and electric power plants that burn fossil fuels as coal and oil. The gases combine with water vapor in clouds to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When the two combine to form acid rain, it falls to the ground as precipitation such rain, snow, and sleet.Buy custom acid rain term paper

Different countries have more problems with acid rain than others. Countries such as the United States have a greater problem than Egypt because the U.S. is much more industrialized and produces much greater amounts of pollution. With the tremendous amounts of acid rain in North America, it causes damage and billions of dollars of damage. In Canada, acid rain accounts for $1 billion worth of damage each year. Usually countries with less population and less industrialization have fewer problems with acid rain than those with larger populations and more industrialization.

Certain areas of the United States have more problems with acid rain than others. The most acid rain falls in the East Coast of the United States. The pollutants released from the Mid-western power plants rise high into the air and are carried by winds toward the East Coast of the U.S. When winds blow the acid chemicals into areas where there is wet weather, the acids become part of the rain, snow or fog. In areas where the weather is dry, the acid chemicals may fall to Earth in gases or dusts.

Many environmental problems are caused by acid rain. Trees and soil are the most potent to damage from acid rain. When acid rain is absorbed into the soil it washes away vital nutrients present in the soil. Aluminum also present in soil is freed, because of the chemical reaction, and this toxic element to trees starves them because they don't get the vital nutrients they need. Acid rain also damages materials such as fabrics. For example, flags that are put up are being eaten away by the acidic chemicals in the precipitation. Acid rain also effects fish. Acid molecules in the water cause mucus to form in their gills and this prevents the fish to absorb oxygen as well. If the buildup of mucus increases, the fish would suffocate.

Acid rain has many effects on humans. The main problem of acid rain is respiratory problems like asthma, dry coughs, headaches, eye, nose, and throat irritations. Another problem of acid rain is when the acid rain dissolves toxic metals such as aluminum into groundwater and then absorbed into fruits, vegetables, and the tissue of animals and humans. Aluminum present in the organs of the animals has been shown kidney problems and recently has been linked to Alzheimers disease.

The Clean Air Act is the primary federal law that protects our nations air quality.

This law regulates emissions of certain air pollutants because they are known to harm human and environmental health. Starting three years ago the amount of sulfur dioxide produced by our nations power plants was reduced to 8.5 million tons" EPA", which is almost half of the previous allowance. With these reductions made, pollution from sulfur dioxide has reduced over 0%. The Sierra Club also plans action to help stop pollution from sulfur dioxide. Some of the main ideas that they have are for more emissions tests on older power plants that use fossil fuels. Another idea is to establish a National Ambient Air Quality Standard for fine particles such as sulfur dioxides and nitrates. In the future some power plants that use fossil fuels to make energy could be shut down to reduce pollution.

There are many things that can be done to reduce or help eliminate acid rain. One thing would be, whenever possible, use public transportation, carpool, walk or ride a bike instead of driving your car by yourself. By doing this you would reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide that is put into the atmosphere. Another would be to take charge and turn off lights, computers, and other appliances when youre not using them. Also, using alternative energy resources like solar power, wind power, and hydropower are great and free sources of energy. In the future many new and radical ideas may be proposed to eliminate acid rain, and it is our job to support congress and let the proposals go through. The final and most important thing would be to just use common sense and be educated about the environment and what you as a person can do to reduce pollution.

With the future ahead things could be done to eliminate acid rain. We have to possibility to eliminate it by getting rid of fossil fuels such as oil and coal. This has not been done in my opinion because many people just don't think that these ideas could in fact work, like solar power and hydropower to make energy. In cars, hydrogen is and could be used, but many people think that this idea would never work because the car wouldn't be able to go very fast. With all of the pollution and acid rain in the world now people shouldn't think about fast cars, but about what the fast approaching future will bring.

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. The basic living unit of your body is the cell. Every structure in your body is composed of a collection of many different cells, each performing its function in support of the overall success or failure of your human body. In all, your body contains about 100 trillion cells, each working independently so that as a whole you will be healthy. Each cell is especially adapted to perform one particular function. Life and health are the balanced interaction of all body cells. Cells group to form organs, tissue, bone, and other parts that make up our physical being. Each individual cell consumes fuel, produces energy, and eliminates waste. When given the necessary components of minerals, vitamins and a healthy mental attitude-our body, in the totality of its cells, can maintain a perfect balance of life and health. Ladies and gentlemen, fellow Toastmasters and friends, allow me to share with you my topic titled "You are what you Eat".

What do you eat ladies and gentlemen ?

Your body takes food, digest it, capture its nutrients and transport these nutrients to your cells. Your cells use these nutrients to perform all the functions that they do in your body. What you eat becomes the cell structure of your body and the cell structure determines your physical-healthy or unhealthy-nature. This is why you should be aware of what you eat. If you eat unhealthy foods, you generate unhealthy and toxic cells, which means that you will become unhealthy and toxic. Your cells need certain nutrients, some of which are found in the food you eat for eg protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals, water, and enzymes.

Protein, carbohydrate, and fat are known as macronutrients because we need a lot of them (macro means large) to stay healthy. Unfortunately, a lot of the food that we eat today lack many vitamins and minerals. Protein is essential to maintaining the structure and function of all life-the word itself is derived from the Greek word protos, meaning primary or first. Protein is vital for growth, repair and maintenance of muscles, blood, internal organs, skin, hair, and nails.

Most people think only of meat when considering protein sources, and meat is an excellent source of protein. Unfortunately, depending solely on meat is problematic.

Meat contains too much fat, which leads to problems associated with fat obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and other problems. Meat can also overwork the liver and result in too much ammonia which affect cell reproduction. So, if you cut back on meat, where can you get protein?

Tuna is an excellent source, as are soybean products and whole wheat grains. Too much meat-meaning meat everyday-hurts your cells, and thus your health. Having a balance meal and making an effort not to make meat the centre of our diets is essential. Try to eat only two to three servings of lean meat a week as this will help to avoid a catalogue of health problems.

Carbohydrate-rich food come from plants and is the main source of energy for all body functions. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple and complex. Sugar is an example of simple carbohydrate and is found in food such as carbonated soft drinks, most desserts, candies and similar foods. Complex carbohydrate (starch and fibre) is found in whole grain breads, spaghetti, rice noodles, barley, potatoes, and other such foods.

Simple carbohydrate like sugar is unhealthy. They provide calories and short-term energy, but no nutrients. They can contribute to obesity and high blood pressure and result in tooth decay. More dangerously, simple sugars can affect our immune systems by decreasing the bodys ability to destroy bacteria and fight infection.

Complex carbohydrate on the other hand, provides us with benefits. They are the best energy source we have. Fibre, which is a complex carbohydrate, provides additional benefits, including prevention of constipation and haemorrhoids, improved handling of diabetes, and many gastrointestinal benefits.

Although many people strive to eat a no-Fat diet, fat is important to your cells. It is an energy source, makes your food taste good, carries certain nutrients and insulates your nerves and bones.

Unhealthy fats are known as saturated fats. Saturated fats include fats found in animal foods and the coconut plant. You should avoid eating large quantities of foods that contain saturated fats. Other types of fat are better for you, and some have health benefits. These are monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, and polyunsaturated fats such as vegetable and fish oils. An easy way to know which type of fat you are eating is simply to observe its form.

The more liquid it is, the more unsaturated it is and the healthier it is; the more solid it is, the more saturated it is and the unhealthier it is. Thus, fats derived from plants (such as vegetable oils), which are liquid, are largely unsaturated and healthier, while fats derived from animals (such as lard), which are solid, are largely saturated.

So what are the steps to a good diet ?

Don't skip meals

Eat and chew slowly

Bake or boil food instead of frying

Don't go back for seconds

Purchase low-calorie or low-fat foods

So ladies and gentlemen, if you are not eating healthly, you should start taking steps to change your diet. There are only two choices; make progress or make excuses. You get out of life what you put in.

The title of the novel The Catcher In The Rye, by JD Salinger, has a

substantial connection to the story. This title greatly explains the main

character, Holden Caulfield, and his feelings towards life and human nature. In

Cheap Custom Essays on Sign up

society he has found enormous corruption, vulgarity, harm and havoc. He knows

that the children of the world are ruined by the corruption of adults around

them and, he states later in the novel, his new purpose in life will be to help

save the children from this vulgarity. Holden wants to be a Catcher in the

Rye. We first hear the title of the novel being used in chapter 16, and in

chapter we have the full explanation of this title. Human dignity is vital

to Holdens existence and the only way to guarantee this on a long term basis is

to assist children in maintaining their innocence from the dangers of adulthood.

In chapter 16 we have the first reference to the meaning of the novels

title, The Catcher in the Rye. Holden hears a little boy singing to himself a

verse which makes Holden very happy If a body catch a body coming through the

rye, (Page 115). It is difficult to understand why Holden is made happy by the

little boys singing unless one has an idea of what the song means to Holden.

The little boy is described by Holden in gentle caring terms The kid was

swell. He was walking in the street, instead of on the sidewalk, but right next

to the curb. He was making out like he was walking a very straight line, the

way kids do, and the whole time he kept singing and humming. (Page 115).

Holden notes that the childs parents pay no attention to him. To Holden this

child represents innocence and youth unspoiled by adult immorality.

Holden wishes to serve humanity by safeguarding the innocence and purity

of children, by protecting them from the evils of life. His little sister,

Phoebe, asks him what he would like to be and he answers

I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of

rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobodys around - nobody big, I mean

- except me. And Im standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to

do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if

theyre running and they dont look where theyre going I have to come out from

somewhere and catch them. Thats all Id do all day. Id just be the catcher

in the rye and all. I know its crazy, but thats the only thing Id really

like to be. I know its crazy. (Page 17)

From this quotation one can see that his role is completely selfless and humane

the beneficiary of his good deeds would be society at large, not Holden

Caulfield. He sees himself as the savior of children, of innocence and basic

human dignity. What ultimately drives Holden mad is the realization that he

cannot single-handedly eliminate the corruption and vulgarity of the world.

When he understands that he must redefine his purpose in life and shift the

focus of his good intentions to those areas where he can accomplish good, he is

able to pull himself out of the despair and set forth a new path in life.

Holden is torn between the desire on the one hand to grow up and to

adjust and on the other hand to stay a child, living in a world of security

and innocence. He has perceived adulthood as a fallen condition characterized

by evil, falsity and betrayal and so has tried to evade it by dreaming of

retreating to the woods, living in isolation - even dreaming of dying. However

in chapter 5, when Holden rejects his desire to prevent Phoebe from reaching

for the gold ring, it signals his coming to terms with his inner conflict.

Through the example of Phoebe, he begins to be restored to a belief in life -

to accept that living connects both pain and joy, beauty and ugliness. Holden

realizes that risks must be taken if one is to grow The thing with kids is,

if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say

anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but its bad if you say anything to

them. (Page 11).

Throughout the novel, The Catcher In The Rye, and with the information

stated above, one can clearly see that the title is relevant to the story.

Holden Caulfield wants to be a Catcher in the Rye. He feels a need to save

all children from the corruption and immorality that is found within society.

He wishes to aid mankind by protecting the innocence and purity of children.

Holden tries to do this by protecting children from the evils of life, as

symbolized by the cliff. He believes that if he could save the children and

their purity of heart then he would be helping society enormously. He realizes

though that he cannot solely do this, and redefines his purpose to something

more approachable. He now understands that maybe falling isnt that bad after

all, and that one must take risks if one is to grow. When he makes this

decision he rejects the role of catcher and in addition affirms his own

acceptance of his evolving maturity.

We see Holden as a constant character. As a person who refuses to

accept reality and tries as much as he can to grasp childhood. He wants to

become patron of the children in order to protect their purity and

innocence.

And as a final remark I would like to say that when we are honest

we can see within ourselves suppressed elements of the forces operating

within Holden Caulfield, and because of that I would recommend this thought

provoking novel as a fascinating and enlightening description of our human

condition. However, beware ... for that very reason it is not comfortable

reading.

People tend to get mistreated because of what they did and they get punish for it physically and mentally. Regardless if they try to get away, the shame still stays with them wherever they go. Each place has its own rules and justice. In the forest where everything is wild, unlike the forest, the city of Boston is civilized. In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the forest represents freedom and wilderness, and the town represents oppressions and justice.Pearl is Hester and Minister Dimmesdale child, she's "that little creature, whose innocent life has sprung…out of the rank luxuriance of a guilty passion." Hester and Minister Dimmesdale committed adultery because of temptations. Temptations are hard to fight and so they both gave into that temptation and Pearl is the consequence. Pearl and her mother lived in the forest with no rules and regulations. She turns out to be unmanageable, forcing Hester to let her do what she wants. Eventually, Hester [is] ultimately compelled to stand aside, and permit the child to be swayed by her own impulses. Hester gave up on controlling Pearl so she just let her have her ways. Pearl shows a love of mischief and a disrespect of authority, which reminds Hester of her own sin. Pearl lacked the respect for "human ordinances or opinions, right or wrong," and for the social rules. She speaks her mind and isn't afraid to hold back anything. As an innocent child, free from the restriction of organized systems, Pearl is able to understand the interpretation of human experience. Pearl and her mother was excluded from the circle of "respectable" society, so every time they walk she finds herself being surrounded by the curious children of the town. Having been scorned by the Puritans all her young life, Pearl is furious when other children approach her, going so far as to throw stones and screams at them. She has no social skills and no interaction with other children. The Puritans punished her mother by making her wear the scarlet letter, so pearl is the living version of the scarlet symbol. The forest has made Pearl into a rebel child, and the town made her into a person full of hatred.

Hester Prynne, a young woman of the community of Boston, has been found guilty of adultery, and she has been sentenced to wear her "sin by a scarlet letter". The Puritan belief is "that sin not only permeates our world but that it should be actively sought out and exposed so that it can be punished publicly". Exposing sin is meant to help the sinner and provide an example for others, but Hester punishment only gave the townspeople a chance to convince themselves of their own sins by criticizing her as loudly as possible. Rather than seeing their own sinfulness in Hester, the townspeople see her as someone whose crime outweigh their own sins. She had to face many of the cruel-faced women of Boston who thinks her punishment is not enough and instead she should be sentence to death or have a branded A on her forehead. For every crime a person commits there are consequences to it and Pearl is the consequence of Hester's crime as the town people see it. But to her, Pearl is her "mother's only treasure". Everything was taken away from Hester, her pride and dignity. She has nothing left but her daughter.

The men who sit in the judgment "had no right" to meddle with a question of human guilt, passion and anguish. Everyone has sinned before, so they don't have the authority to judge Hester. No one has the right to judge Hester except God. After her imprisonment has ended, she's free to go anywhere but she does not leave Boston; she chooses to move into a "small thatched cottage by the sea, on the outskirt of town". This shows that Hester does not need to run away or live a life of lies in order to resist the judgment against her. In the forest, where she has her own privacy and her own freedom to do whatever it is she wants. Everything she does isn't being watched or being judged for. Hesters social life is basically eliminated as a result of her shameful history. She is treated so poorly that often preachers will stop in the street and start to deliver a lecture as she walks by. Even though Hester is not a Puritan, she still accepts her punishment. The town people have made her into a stronger person, and the forest has given her, her independence.

Minister Dimmesdale is a devoted servant of God. But yet he committed adultery with Hester Prynne and is the father of her little girl, Pearl. He is seen as the most respective in the community, and people would never think that he would commit such a sin. He "concealed" his "sin" and that had tormented his conscience. He doesn't want to loose respect of his community so he has to hide it and live a life of lies. Instead of confessing his sin, he punished himself by whipping himself till he bleeds. He lived a deceiving life because he doesn't want to admit that he sinned against the Puritan God whom he serves. He's a weak man who can't take the humiliation and punishment for his crime that Hester had faced which he committed with her. Hester chooses to meet Dimmesdale in the forest where it is a place of privacy and intimacy. It is "wild" and "natural", excluded by any man rules or code. Hester and Dimmesdale crossed the line between two worlds, the codified Puritan town and the "wild" and "natural" Indian settlement, where they are able to express their love for each other without anyone knowing, the only one that knows is the trees. He faced the decision of being a good Puritan or being a good follower of God. He chose to be a good Puritan and hid his shameful sin from everyone, but yet he tortured himself to make him feel less guilty.

Hester, Pearl, Minister Dimmesdale were all treated differently in the town, but it was in the forest where their secrets were hidden. It was a sacred place for them to show their true individuality. In the town, where they have to follow the rules, they were treated like prisoner; where in the forest where they were all treated with liberal

The Death Penalty is one of the most effective ways to keep dangerous criminals from committing crimes. Every time the death penalty is applied to a person, the risk of more people murdered is reduced. Some people talk about the death penalty as something barbaric, and inhumane thing that can never be accepted in a civilized society, punishment is somewhat the opposite of barbaric since it reveals justice and rectitude. It is not a barbaric act to remove a violent murderer who has injured and killed fellow humans; it is not barbaric to make society a somewhat safer, calm and just place. However, it is important to emphasize that capital punishment should be applied to those criminals who commit major crimes such as sexual abuse, murders, terrorism, treason, or those who belong to the mafia of drugs, the cruel and unjustified killing of animals, among others. These crimes do not have any justification because they are attempting against the life of other human beings. Therefore, the individuals who commit such crimes should receive the maximum punishment. Justice has to rule society; otherwise, society would be full of murderers who will keep committing crimes without the fear of receiving punishment. The death penalty does not have all the support from several citizens in this country as well as others. Nevertheless, there are several facts to support this measurement.

The death penalty is an effective form of punishment. Abolitionists often quarrel that, with the death penalty, there is an unavoidable fact that someone innocent will be executed, but they do not realize that the courts give them the opportunity to prove their innocence by granting them appeals and a fair trial. It is valid to assume that throughout the years many innocent people have been executed. However, many of these people were not proven or found to be innocent. Other people against capital punishment argue that this measure does not deter, as a result, it is useless. It is valid to argue this comment, but it is obvious that the death penalty deters some people from committing murder and cruel crimes and, thereby, society is less brutalized. No one should have any doubt of this. Those sentenced to death have to suffer an unbearable existence until their death, no one can live or sleep thinking that the day of their death is getting closer every second. It has been proven that there will always be people who are more afraid of death than lifetime in prison, and consequently this will keep some from committing heinous crimes. The death penalty is more than justified since it would come to save some innocent lives, and their lives should be more important for us to save than the life of a killer. People against the death penalty can often say, "the death penalty does not help," but they do not realize that it helps by giving a just punishment and to maintain the respect and the dignity of the human life. In addition, it is clearly understood that murderers and violent criminals who are executed are unable to commit new crimes. Every time a serial killer is stopped by the use of the death penalty, before the violence has spread, humanism and humanity wins a great victory and starts creating a brick for a nicer and safer society.

Punishment is needed to protect society by eliminating crime through example. Criminals have to fear justice; this way the number of crimes will decrease. The justice has to demonstrate that if anyone robs a person of his or her life, everyone should feel safe knowing that this murderer will also lose his life. Nowadays, the death penalty counts with the support of President Bush who states "I support the death penalty because I believe, if administered swiftly and justly, Capital Punishment is a deterrent against future violence and will save other innocent lives." If a criminal kills a person, he is taking away the most valuable thing the victim has life. Therefore, the criminal has to pay the price with his own life. When the justice executes a dangerous criminal, it is like a doctor performing surgery. Sometimes a surgeon has to amputate a part of the body in order to save the rest of the body. The law is also forced to perform such unnatural operations (the death penalty). However, it is an operation that, despite all, brings justice, human value, compassion and defense of life itself, to the body of society. Enemies of the death penalty use as an argument "the right to life." Using this argument is contradictory since they are trying to give the criminal the right that the victim did not have. The courts should not accept this statement. If this happens, the "right to life" principle will be transformed to an inhumane principle, to a defender of the criminal, and then this principle would become somewhat enemy of humanity. When a court sentences a criminal to death, it is demonstrating an act of civilization because it is announcing that committing violent crimes is morally wrong and causes dread among those who are planning to commit more evil acts. In retrospect, justice has to put the example and guide the society to think twice before committing a crime.

It is better to prevent more acts that are violent before they take place. It is proven that the death penalty costs more money to this country than a life prison sentence, but it is better to pay that price than to permit the loses of more innocent lives. Assassinations, sexual abuse, and terrorism are crimes that must be punished with all the rigidity of the law. No one has the right to physically or psychologically assault a human being because everyone has the right to be respected. Moreover, since the death penalty is a measure to make people respect each other, it has to receive complete support of society.

She always blames the Chapman problems on Toms wife and defends Tom all the time, but she cares about her grandchildren a lot. Dont you think Im worried too? We feel so help less down here. We offered to come up when Michael first disappeared...-- John Grainger-The private detective Jodys grandparents hired. A retired police officer, he offered little hope to the Chapmans of finding Michael, dead or alive. Still, he used all resources he has to find him, alive or dead. Ill do my best. I promise you that, Kay" 5. The author reveals the central characters personality by allowing us to enter into Jodys mind and know her thoughts, perspectives, and observations on her problems, situations, and people. The author uses first person narration in this story. 6. The setting contributes to the novels characters actions. Jody thought maybe Michael ran away to Los Angeles or New York because theyre big cities where ordinary people can go unnoticed. That idea could have been Michaels intention. Also, the neighborhood where Jody - lives can also be a factor in the novel. People knew Michael and searched every place he couldve disappeared to. The time of the novel also helps because the detective said he couldve been abducted for kiddie porn, which wasnt a problem before until now. 7. The major conflicts in the novel are between Jodys mom and Kay, Jodys parents (external) and Jodys emotions with Michaels disappearance impact on her life (internal). A few minor conflicts are between Jody and her friends. These are resolved when Tom decides the family should go into therapy to stay together and Jodys friends know that shes going through a rough time with Michael missing. As for Jodys conflict, she learned to continue life without ever expecting Michael to come back. 8. The minor character I chose from the novel is Reverend Bruce Richards. I as a kind and knowledgeable, Well, you cant spend the night at Port Authority-. You can stay in my office, & Its not a question of trying too much or too little. Its trying the right things that counts. I chose the minister because he made an impact on Jodys perspective on her situation. While Jody did what he asked, which was pray, be patient, and look up to God, Jody also shared with him a phrase that calmed her down. He exchanged a phrase with something Jody will never forget. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. Reverend Bruce Richards purpose in the novel was to help deeply with Jodys character in understanding her lifes problems ever since Michael disappeared and offer her some hope in her future. . I would recommend this novel to a friend because it deals about problems that are happening in the world-today. Maybe not the exact way it happens in the novel, but the message near the end and Jodys trials with Michaels disappearance are worth reading about

IT.

Christmas Adventure

For some people Christmas can get to be a routine. Families will get together to have dinner and open presents. Many times Christmas can get boring. A good Christmas is one that is different form the rest, like the Christmas that I spent with my family in Mexico. One year my family decided that for Christmas we would take a trip to Mexico, by car. We were going to go to my grandmother's house and spend Christmas there. I was hesitant about going. Even though I did want to see my family there, I knew that the trip meant driving for a couple of days. This was the first Christmas that I had ever spent in Mexico.

We left so early in the morning that I was very sleepy, and I did not want to get up. It was winter, so it was cold and foggy outside. The seats in my dad's old station wagon were made out of leather, so they were very cold. I tried to sleep in the car, but it was too cold and the heater was making too much noise. We were also tightly squeezed in the car. My dad was the driver, my mom sat on the passenger side, and my three sisters, my three brothers and I filled the back seats. I could smell the coffee that my dad was drinking. It left a pleasant aroma in the car. This was just the beginning of my trip.

We drove the whole day, making a few stops for food and gas. We had no idea how long it would take us to get there. That night we rented a motel room with two beds, and that's where we spent the night. It was hard to sleep in there, because the motel was alongside the road, and I was able to hear each car that went by. We got up very early the next morning to continue driving. That day was very hot, and there was no air conditioning in the car. We stopped along the road to take pictures, to eat, and to stretch. It would get very boring sitting in the car for long periods of time. We played games and sang songs to entertain ourselves. We drove through the desert for about eight hours. My little brother kept asking "Are we almost there?" My dad rarely spoke while he was driving. He drank his coffee and concentrated on his driving. That second night we spent the night in the car, because there were no motels, and my dad was too tired to keep driving. My dad just pulled into a gasoline station and parked the car. We all tried to sleep the best we could. My mom rarely slept. She would stay awake watching over us. It was a good thing that my mom stayed awake that night. While we were all sleeping, she noticed a man that was trying to take down the luggage that we had on top of the car. Everyone woke up when my mom screamed. That also scared the man away. We continued driving after that. It took about ten more hours to arrive at my grandmother's house. We were all relieved that we had finally gotten there. We didn't have to sit in the car any longer, and now we had a comfortable bed to sleep in. The trip took two and a half days.

After arriving, immediately I felt at home. My grandmother's house was made out of old faded bricks. She had a beautiful garden with many kinds of flowers and three bird cages. The birds kept chirping as if they were happy to see us. The house seemed huge, since she lived by herself. The first thing I noticed when I walked inside was the red and green checkered floor. I got to meet new relatives, and I thought everyone was nice. My grandmother's neighbors also came by to greet us. It was a couple of days before Christmas, so my grandmother had her nativity set displayed with lots of blinking lights. I was happy to be there.

When Christmas came, we were all anxious to celebrate and have a good time. That morning my mother and grandmother got up early to start cooking. Later on my aunts stopped by to help out. Meanwhile my brothers, my sisters and I went out to walk around. By the evening, many relatives had shown up. There was plenty of food, as though we were going to feed the whole neighborhood. There were plates full of tamales all stacked up, a bowl of posole was in the center of the table, several kinds of pasta salads were spread across the table, and there was also barbecued chicken. The dessert table was also filled with sweet tamales, and little squares of chocolate candy. We all ate, and enjoyed each others conversations. There were no presents, which we were used to, but that made no difference. Nobody even mentioned presents. Outside we got together with the neighbors to break pinatas. The colorful pinatas hang up high from a tree, and the children would go up to hit it. A wood fire kept us warm. The men and women gathered around the fire, while the rest of us played and danced. It was the best Christmas that I had ever experienced. Everyone stayed up very late. The next day I was tired from all the running around and dancing the day before. I got up late, wishing that next year we would be back again for Christmas. We celebrated New Years the same way, with lots of food, and lots of people. The days went by fast, and before I knew it we had been there for three weeks. It was time to come home, time to go back to school, time to go back to our daily routines. It was time to face reality.

Spending Christmas vacation in Mexico with my family was the greatest adventure of my life. The time seemed short, even though it lasted about four weeks. One week was spent in the car, driving to and from Mexico, and three weeks were spent in Mexico. From this experience I learned that Christmas doesn't have to be the same every year. Going to different places for Christmas and meeting new people can be a pleasant experience.
