The American Anti-Slavery Group, Inc. was founded in 1 to combat slavery around the world. American Anti-Slavery Group had achieved the goal of freeing over 45,000 slaves. The main objective of American Anti-Slavery Group was to press human rights concern and to unite a powerful anti-slavery movement. The American Anti-Slavery Group contributed to the continuing struggle to end slave trading in Afghan and other countries. American Anti-Slavery Group also helped exploited the poor conditions throughout African states. Every year the American Anti-Slavery Group raised money to help with food, medical supplies, and clothes for the refugees in different countries. In September of 000, Dr. Coretta Scott King widow of famed civil rights lawyer Dr. Martin Luther King presented the Boston Freedom Award to American Anti-Slavery Group President Dr. Charles Jacobs in recognition of abolishing slavery.

The images displayed on the web sites are very disheartening. When I look at the images I can only think about how slavery was in America during the 1800's when my ancestors were alive. The governments believe that slave trading can help lower the money for labor and other expensive an employee would have. Thus, this would surely provide more control over an individual. Slavery provides a control environment on the mind, which lowers the esteem on an individual. The form of modern slavery can be examined as working hard to pay taxes. The government has control over what is considered as your tax bracket by your income. If your work hard you make more money and if you make more money you pay more taxes. That theory is still unexplainable at this point. I believe that if you make more money you will buy more expensive items, which would have a good affect on spending.

Some of the methods used to enslave a modern slave today are to take away any knowledge of becoming successful. Taking the knowledge from a person will enslave their mind to thinking they are dumb and have no ambitions in life. Another way of enslaving a group is to limit the way of transportation to other places. If you limit travel than a person will feel they have no place to escape. Another way of enslaving which is very popular today is Alcohol and Drugs in lower class areas. This has been an on-going process in our society today. There liquor stores and the drug dealers at every corner of lower class neighborhoods and not in the upper or middle class neighborhoods. In Afghanistan, many women are sold into prostitution and men into extreme work labor. Thus, through slavery is technically illegal in Pakistan, the laws are rarely enforced. Afghans have no legal status and no papers, there is little to connect refugees to the protections of the state. The slaves are worked severely and eat bad food they also have no freedom.

In conclusion, I believe the United Nations is not doing enough to end slavery. I believe that it is more political for the good of the government not the country. They believe that getting the government to end war is more important than the slavery issue. I only think how bad it is to have a freedom and waste it away on working hard for the government's benefit. I have learned that there slavery still existed in America the land of the free and being a minority does not make the situation better. I am African-American but, I am treated like an African not an American.

Research Problem & Method

Our research problem will be on Terrorism. I selected this topic because I wanted to learn more about the why and how of Terrorism. Being from another planet, us aliens would learn to prevent Terrorism on our planet. I have discussed the topic and decided to refine the topic on Why does Terrorism exist?

Our research methods we will be using are the resources from the Internet, the local library, and the UOPHX online library. Research begins with the problem of deciding what we want to know, which variables to use, and how to measure them in a valid and reliable way.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Research Problem & Method

The types of research method that we will we implement are the scientific method, which we will gather and interpret the evidence we find. We will then use variables to compare events and measure any data that we find.

There are three basic tasks to do sociological research. The first task is to describe and identify the question. The second task is to explain what we describe what the question identifies and the third task is to predict what the future will look like if the problem exist. Other research methods we can consider will be in-depth interviews, surveys or secondary analysis of information. This is information already gathered by other researchers. Researching for historical documents will be an additional valuable source of information to support our secondary analysis. This will help us understand social conditions in which people once lived.

We will also use the cross-cultural method of studying different type of societies that are dealing with terrorism. After we collect all this data on terrorism we will interpret the data and discover clues and patterns of why Terrorism exist.

The definition of Terrorism according to Webster-Merriam online defines Terrorism as the threat or use of violence, often against the civilian population, to achieve the political ends.

Terrorism was dated back in the 18th century when the common people of France were against the taxing policies of King Louis the XVI. The common people of France launched a violent rebellion against the King, the Catholic Church, the nobles and anyone who disagreed with the goals of the rebellion. During the first years of the revolution, the government struggled to gain control over the chaos that enveloped France. The government then took matters on their own hands and created the "Reign of Terror". Anyone who criticized the government was declared to be a traitor and will be beheaded on the guillotine. This terror killed about 40,000 people and left people living in terror of being the next victim of the guillotine. This was the first example of government-sponsored terrorism. This showed how violence and the threat of violence could be used to frighten opponents and increase own power.

Modern Terrorism today consists of activities such as assassinations, bombings, random killings, hijackings, skyjackings and biochemical warfare by groups who are weak to mount open assaults. It is also a modern tool of the alienated and its psychological impact on the public increased because of the extensive coverage by the news media.

Governments and nations are trying different types of methods to prevent terrorism. The U.S. government has created a few agencies dedicated to prevent terrorism. One of the agencies The Diplomatic Security Service offers rewards up to $5million dollars leading to the capture of the individuals before they strike.

Terrorism for the future is here to stay and until people finally realize that killing innocent people is not the right thing to do, terrorism may end.

NURSING 1

( STANDARD PRECAUTIONS)

Today I would like to discuss a subject, which is very relevant to Nursing; we have been introduced to this subject very briefly in our practical sessions.

The journal, which we will present, is on Standard Precautions.

The article is a Nursing Standard article which is owned by nurses for nurses. The article was published in May 17.

I will now give you some brief history on the subject.

Universal blood and body fluid precautions (Universal Precautions) were originally devised by the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in 185. In response to an urgent need to protect hospital personnel from blood borne infections. Emphasis is based on the assumption that all persons are presumed infectious.

In Australia the term Universal Precautions was deemed ambiguous and leading to a false notion that wearing gloves was a substitute for hand washing and that this perception was leading to an increase in the risk of hospital acquired infection.

An Infection Control working party recommended the term "Standard Precautions" as the basic risk minimisation strategy and "Additional Precautions" where Standard Precautions may be insufficient.

OVERHEAD No 1 (Definitions)

"Standard Precautions" describes the minimum requirements in work practices to promote infection control.

They include good hygiene particularly washing and drying of hands before and after patient contact, and the use of protective barriers, which may include gloves, gowns or aprons, masks, eye shields or goggles.

Appropriate handling of sharps and other contaminated or infectious waste.

"Additional Precautions" have also been adopted when standard precautions may be insufficient to prevent transmission of infection.

Health care workers who come into contact with patient's blood and body fluids may be exposed to an occupational risk from blood borne and viral infections such as HIV and Hepatitis B & C.

The most likely form of transmission of these viruses to nurses is by direct contact of infected blood by a sharps injury or by blood splashing onto broken skin or mucous membranes such as the lining of the mouth.

As a matter of good practice nursing staff should use appropriate barrier methods, which will prevent the contamination by blood and body fluids.

OVERHEAD No (Standard Precautions Apply To)

1 Blood

All body secretions and excretions, except sweat regardless of whether they contain blood.

Non Intact skin.

4 Mucous membranes such as the lining of the mouth.

OVERHEAD No (Standard Precautions promote the use of

Personal protective equipment)

(GLOVES) Gloves prevent the transmission of pathogens by direct and indirect contact.

Nurses apply gloves when there is a risk of handling infected material.

In most cases single use gloves can be worn.

After coming into contact with any infected material, the nurse should change gloves if the client care is not completed.

Gloves must be removed and hands washed between patient care.

(APRONS/ GOWNS) The primary reason for gowning is to prevent soiling of clothing during contact with the patient.

Gowns protect nurses from coming into contact with infected material.

Gowns or aprons prevent cross contamination in instances such as changing a dressing for a wound, which has purulent discharge.

The gown or apron should be long enough to cover all outer garments.

(MASKS/ FACE PROTECTION) Masks or masks with face shields should be worn when splashing or spraying of blood or body fluid into the face is anticipated.

A properly applied mask fits snugly over the mouth and nose so that pathogens and body fluids cannot enter or escape through the sides.

(CONCLUSION)

In concluding!

Everyday every shift nursing staff practice Standard Precautions,

most of the time without even thinking about it, the article is very relevant to the work, which we will soon be performing.

The strengths of the article were that it was clear and precise, it didn't get lost in terminology and jargon.

The only weakness is that the article is titled Universal Precautions which is now outdated.

The article was informative without being to technical.

1. Aboriginal Site

Tucki Tucki Bora Ring

The Tucki Tucki Bora Ring is located in the grounds of the Tucki village cemetery, 14km south west of Lismore along the Wyrallah Road on the far north coast of New South Wales (Grid reference 001 map no. 540--S Wardell). The site sits on a north-south ridge 60 metres above the flood plains of the Richmond River and commands extensive views across the cleared plains to the west and the rolling hills leading north to the McPherson Range along the NSW-Queensland border.

The bora ring lies within the grounds of the Tucki Tucki General Cemetery which was dedicated in 181. The ring has been described as the finest example of its type in New South Wales (Danks 1).

Do my essay on Tucki Tucki Bora Ring CHEAP !

The site consists of a large bora ring and a short section of pathway leading southwest to a smaller ring on adjacent private land. The smaller ring is now largely obliterated due to past agricultural activities (Free 1). The larger ring is circular and approximately 5 metres in diameter. It is marked by a raised embankment approximately 1.5 metres wide and averaging 18cm in height. The embankment extends around the entire perimeter of the ring except for a large opening in the southwest for the path that originally led to the smaller ring (Free 1).

The centre of the ring is marked by a circular depression about 0cm deep and 1.8 metres wide (Free 1). Steele (187) suggests that this may have served as a fireplace although an information sign erected by the Richmond River Historical Society, in the form of a stone monument adjacent to the ring, refers to the depression as a pit or open grave.

A treated pine log fence approximately 1 metre high has been erected around the outside of the ring, presumably to exclude vehicles and livestock. The site is almost completely surrounded by a relatively recent planting of native tree species including Eucalyptus tereticornis and E. microcorys. These are estimated to be 0 to 0 years old and have attracted a variety of regenerating species that have germinated in the understorey. There is a cleared area about 1 metre wide between the fence and the tree planting that allows easy access around the perimeter of the ring

A lone gravesite is located close to the perimeter of the ring while the remainder of the graves belonging to the cemetery are several metres distant to the north and east.

A large stone set in concrete can also be found on the southern edge of the perimeter. Although there is no information as to the significance of the stone Danks (1) suggests that this may have been used for grinding ochres.

Although it has been speculated that cattle grazing has caused considerable erosion in the past (Richmond River Historical Society 164), the site is currently under a healthy grass cover and the exclusion of cattle and vehicles appears to have arrested any erosion problems.

Along with the interpretive monument erected by the Richmond River Historical Society, there is a National Parks and Wildlife sign briefly outlining the significance of the bora ring and penalties for defacing or damaging the site.

A long time ago I hade a dirt bike. I can remember that I was a good rider. I could go off any jump. Or I can beat anybody in a race.

I was so happy with it. I got it for my birthday. Ever summer I would try to ride it every day.

Until that one spring morning I woke up. None of my gear fit. I grew to big for the bike. So my dad and I took it to his shop with a for sale sign on it. Then somebody and his son pulled up and bought it. And I sang

Custom writing service can write essays on All songs are poetry.

A long, long time ago...

I can still remember

How that dirt bike used to make me smile.

And i knew if i had my chance

That i could make those jumps at last

And, maybe, Id be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver

With every flyer I'd deliver.

Bad news on the doorstep;

I couldnt take one more step.

I cant remember if i cried

When I sold my dirt bike,

But something touched me deep inside

The day my dirt bike sold.

So bye-bye, to my old bike.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

And them good old boys were drinking coke'

Singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Did you write the book of riding,

And do you have faith in god above,

If the bible tells you so?

Do you believe in rock n roll,

Can music save your mortal soul,

and can you teach me how to ride real slow?

Well, i know that youre in love with it,

cause i saw you riding in the gym.

You both kicked off your shoes.

Man, i dig those riding and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin buck

With a blue carnation and a pickup truck,

But i knew i was out of luck

The day the I sold my bike.

I started singin,

bye-bye, to my bike.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Now for five years I've been on our own

And moss grows fat on a rollin stone,

But thats not how it used to be.

When the jester rode for the king and queen,

In a coat he borrowed from James dean

And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,

The jester stole his dirt bike.

The courtroom was adjourned;

No verdict was returned.

And while Lennon read a book on bikes,

The quartet practiced in the park,

And we rode in the dark

The day the I sold my bike.

We were singing,

bye-bye, to my bile.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.

The birds flew off with the bike,

Eight miles high and falling fast.

It landed foul on the grass.

The players tried for a forward pass,

With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume

While the sergeants played a marching tune.

We all got up to dance,

Oh, but we never got the chance!

`cause the players tried to take the field;

The marching band refused to yield.

Do you recall what was revealed

The day the I sold my bike ?

We started singing,

bye-bye, to my old bike.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Oh, and there we were all in one place,

A generation lost in space

With no bikes left to ride.

So come on jack be nimble, jack be quick!

Jack flash sat on a candlestick

Cause fire is the devils only friend.

Oh, and as i watched him on the new bike

My hands were clenched in fists of rage.

No angel born in hell

Could break that riding spell.

And as the flames climbed high into the night

To light the sacrificial rite,

I saw satan laughing with delight

The day the music died

He was singing,

bye-bye, to my bike and i.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Character Analysis

The novel, The House in Paris by Elizabeth Bowen contains the discovery and a better understanding of one's own identity through life experiences, relationships, time and many other elements incorporated in our own environment. The story is presented through different viewpoints. Yet, one viewpoint is through the innocent insight of a child's eye in relationship towards its surroundings. The child is in search of his unknown parents, and the parents are in search of their unknown child. With relevance to the plot and different points of view, the reader is able to get a sense of Leopold's character.

Thus within the first part of the novel, "The Present", as Leopold seems to be attempting to define, or assert, his own identity he is brought to this Anglo-French house in Paris. He is portrayed, in the beginning, as a seemingly arrogant and egotistical person acting like a prince who has an "impersonal air of a royal child." However, it seemed that through his search of identity as he was brought up by his adopted parents, Leopold was "over-understood" throughout the course of time. For,

"The repercussions of all that he said and did echoed through the hollow rooms of the villa, and he knew too well these people found him remarkable. The chosen childish children with whom he played made a crook of him, and all the time he impressed them...Where he came from, kindness thickened the air and sentiment fattened on the mystery of his birth."

Kindness by the adults towards Leopold "thickened the air" as his childhood had been shaped mainly through grown-ups. Adults around him always felt the need to protect him, as if he was in a "bubble", from any outside harm. They treated him like he was very fragile and delicate to possibly "crack" and break. Ignorant of his nature and needs, Leopold's situation is emphasized even more once he reads the letters from his adopted parents. This presents the theory of past wounds and the result of them scarring over. In other words, even though one has a wound the only possible remedy is to ease the pain of the wound. The scar will still be there as a remembrance of the past. Nevertheless, it appears that the adults around Leopold are trying to only ease his pain from his past memories.

Consequently, even though Leopold needs to grow through the continuity of time from the past to the present to the future, he realizes he has been growing in a "fairy-tale". In which, all the apparent attempts by the adults around him is not only to protect him from painful memories of his past but also to keep the details of his past a secret as much as possible. Therefore, Leopold's unawareness of his past makes him feel like he doesn't exist because he basically has no history. Hence, he believes he was named "Grant Moody" because "no on knows I'm born." Especially, since he was adopted it makes him probably feel like less of a person. Also, from the non-appearance of his mother, which was referred to by Naomi as a "change," Leopold once again feels that everything around him feels "unnatural" and "unreal" because Leopold's account of his origins seemed to be coming from an "imaginary mother, like a work of art." At the same time, the author describes the mother as being

"The mother who did not come to meet Leopold…remained his creature, able to speak the truth…He did not have to hear out with grave discriminating intelligence that grown-up falsified view of what had been once that she…might have given him. She, in the flesh, could have offered him only that in reply to the questions…'Why am I? What made me be?'"

To poor little Leopold it seemed that such a meeting as this would have only been possible in a "fairy-tale"; in a perfect little world like "Heaven." Nonetheless, it is only in the end by Ray Forrestier, his father, that Leopold is truly able to move on through time and define his identity in action.

1 Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen. My name is Jason and Im the Best Man. As they were were speaking just now, it struck me how much Paul and his father now have in common. After all, its the first time in 5 years that Ralph has been able to speak for 10 minutes without interruption from the women in his family. And itll be the last time in 5 years that Paul gets to do the same. So I sincerely hope he treasures this moment.

Before I start, let me just say that the formative years I spent in the company of the groom means that he had as much of a part in developing my sense of humour as anyone. So, although I have tried to make this speech as funny as possible, please blame Paul if its not.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all enjoying the day as much as me. Now then, Paul - you know whats expected of me so dont be too upset if, by the time Ive sat down, everyone in this room thinks youre a total moron. And if that does happen, I can only take half the credit because your friends and family think that already.

4 Ladies and gentlemen, for those of you who dont know me, my name is Jason, a complete novice at public speaking. And I have this overwhelming urge to prove it to you today.

5 Ladies and Gentlemen, Ive been to about four weddings over the course of the last couple of years and its true what I read in an etiquette book - the Best Mans speech serves to give an introduction to the Groom. You wont all know him very well and, by the time Ive finished this speech, you may wish you didnt know him at all. But I do find it curious that all the Best Man speeches Ive heard - without exception - blatantly and disgracefully set out to demolish the character of the groom. And frankly, I can see no reason why this speech should be any different.

6 Ladies and Gentelmen, this is quite unusual for me. Here I am with a room full of people waiting to listen to my every word, and for once I cant think of any thing to say. Paul, I do wish you were more interesting.

7 Ladies and gentleman, there is no evidence of scratch marks on his legs, the fence was too high for a man of his height and I can personally testify that hes afraid of sheep. Oh, sorry Paul - seeing you in a suit automatically made me think we were back in court again.

8 Ladies and gentlemen, if theres anybody here this afternoon whos feeling nervous, apprehensive and queasy at the thought of what lies ahead, its probably because you have just got married to Paul Wilson.

For those of you who dont know me, Im Jason, one of Pauls closest friends for over 15 years. In that time, Ive been a partner in crime on many occasions and, in the quieter moments, a confidant for Paul to whom he can tell anything - which has provided me with ample material for my speech this afternoon.

10 Ladies and gentlemen, what a beautiful service and what a wonderful reception. Im overcome with emotion and it's left me speechless which is a bit inconvenient at this precise moment.

Physical Education in the Classes

Regular physical activity is associated with a healthier, longer life style, and with a lower` risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and most of all obesity. Despite all the benefits of physical activity, most school-aged children in this country are inactive. Lack of physical activity has also contributed to a sharp increase in childhood obesity in the last decade. Given the fact that regular physical activity will help younger people stay healthier, and is an essential component of childhood development, it is important that this be included as part of the regular school curriculum.

There are too many variables in human life to ever be able to conclude that physical activity improves academic performance. However, we can with complete certainty say that regular physical activity will help reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes and will help you to live a healthy and happy life. Physical education is an important aspect of any school students' curriculum. A daily well programmed and appropriately monitored physical activity, can help students to increase their self-steam, develop the knowledge, attitude, discipline, and confidence needed to maintain active lifestyles and acquire the skills needed to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity that will last a lifetime.

Recently there has been significant pressure on school authorities from the local government to show increased achievement of recently established standards in academic areas specially reading and math. As provinces develop standardized tests to hold schools and students accountable, subject that is not tested becomes low in priority. Therefore, there has to be a federal law and regulation stating that standardized physical education be part of the regular school curriculum and find schools and students accountable for achieving the standards and like any other subject students must obtain satisfactory mark in order to go to the next grade. However, this should not just be limited to elementary or high school students. All colleges and universities should include physical education (activity) as part of their regular study program and every semester a four or five credit course be taken by the student. Since such course does not require any further preparation could easily be scheduled in the student's time table.

Help with essay on Physical education in the class

Physical education if often given a secondary place in the educational services of our schools, but we all know that it is an essential component of childhood development and should help build a solid foundation for a healthy adult life. By eliminating physical education from the school, when student becomes an adult could experience obesity, or other health problems. It is very important to have an active life style at younger age, so it becomes secondary in nature.

Quality, daily physical activity for all school age children is of crucial importance and is, in part, the responsibility of school. Physical education is particularly important at this time of growing concern about the reduced levels of physical activity and increased levels of obesity, diabetes and related health problems for all age groups. Achieving optimal health is closely linked to success in all life domains, and a comprehensive education that addresses mental, emotional and physical element is essential. Physical education is a key component of such an education.

With the objective in mind that 'physically active, healthy kids learn better' all school students should have a minimum 0-60 minutes of moderate activity everyday. To achieve that, all schools across the country must fit the physical education program into the school curriculum and make it an essential part of the educational system and students are required to pass the course in order to graduate. All provinces set minimum standards of achievement in physical education. Meeting established standards in physical education be requirement for graduation

In vitro fertilization is a technique for conception of a human embryo outside the mothers body. The process begins with the woman taking fertility drugs to increase the number of eggs that are released at ovulation. In IVF, a female egg is fertilized with a sperm solution and returned to the uterus through the cervix. Several, or eggs, are removed from the mothers body and placed in special laboratory culture dishes and then the sperm from the father are then added. If fertilization occurs, a fertilized ovum, is either transferred to the mothers or a surrogate mothers body for normal development in the uterus. Eggs can also now be frozen and fertilized later.

This technique was first developed by Drs. Patrick C. Steptoe and Robert G. Edwards of Great Britain. This was where the first test-tube baby was born under their care in 178. the technique was invented for use in cases of infertility caused by the damage of the womans fallopian tubes or the mans low sperm count. It is also now used to enable prospective parents with other reproductive problems to bear a child. In embryo donation, frozen embryos that are not needed by the mother are donated for implantation to a woman or couple who are infertile but wish to have, and are capable of bearing, children.

A couple is considered infertile if the woman does not conceive a child after one year of unprotected, well-timed intercourse or she has been unable to carry a pregnancy to a live birth. Women under the age of 5 are usually advised to try for 1 months before consulting a physician. Various infertility treatments are normally recommended after six months of trying to conceive. Infertility is not always a woman problem. It is a medical problem of the male or female reproductive system. In 40% of cases, the cause is traced to the woman, another 40% of cases are traced to the man. The rest of the cases are caused by unknown factors.

Statistics show that 6.1 million women 15-44 suffer from impared ability to have children. The number of married couples who suffer from this imparity are .1 million. Most of these women or couples turn to infertility treatments for results. Nine point three million of them have used infertility services. The number of women that are currently using some type of infertility treatments are . million.

IVF can be a good option if the womans fallopian tubes are blocked or if she has endometriosis. IVF is also a good choice when the male partner has a low sperm count. IVF can also be used when the cause of infertility is unknown. An Assisted Reproductive Technology, IVF is a good option for many couples.

Although most of the women who undergo this procedure are satisfied with the results, there are some that may not be so succesful. Clinical pregnancies refers to women whose positive pregnancy tests were followed by identification of a fetus on ultrasound at about seven weeks gestation. Some miscarriages can be expected at that point. Since you presumably want to know what your chances are of having a baby from IVF, live birth data will give you a better picture than clinical pregnancy rates. An ongoing pregnancy is different from a clinical pregnancy. It is one which has reached the second trimester and is therefore quite likely to result in a live birth. According to IVF succes rates, 45% of the women who sustain this procedure give birth to a child. Women under 40 are more likely to have a succesful pregnancy that a woman who is over 40.

Concisely, it is obvious that In Vitro fertilization is a possible resolution to infertility problems in the United States. Thousands of women have obtained positive results due to the outcome of this technique/ surgery. This procedure will hopefully improve so that all women can enjoy parenthood.

The Great Gatsby Success

F. Scott Fitzgerald's detailed descriptions of the landscapes in The Great Gatsby, which use several rhetorical devices, emphasize the theme of success. The rhetorical devices reveal more about this theme as they add style, clarity, and effectiveness to the writing. Both the ideas of being successful as well as unsuccessful are conveyed by Fitzgerald through the different landscapes. The description of Louisville, Gatsby's mansion, and Gatsby's funeral highlight the success that Gatsby achieved.

Fitzgerald's description of Gatsby and Daisy in Louisville show Gatsby's success early in his life. Fitzgerald describes Gatsby's fascination with Daisy in this Louisville setting through effective diction and imagery. The imagery used in the description Daisy's mansion provides the reader with a better idea of what he wanted in his life. The mansion amazed Gatsby with its "ripe mystery about it, a hint of bedrooms upstairs more beautiful and cool than other bedrooms…and redolent of this years shining motor cars." (155). This mansion symbolized the wealth Gatsby wanted in life. Fitzgerald also describes Daisy as being "excitingly desirable," (155) to Gatsby. The words "excitingly desirable" show the priority Gatsby placed on being with Daisy. Gatsby first kisses Daisy on a moonlit evening in Louisville before the war. This kiss signified Gatsby's accomplishment of his goals early in his life. During their time in Louisville, Gatsby and Daisy became very much in love, she "brushed silent lips against his coat's shoulder," (158) and he "touched the end of her fingers, gently, as though she were asleep." (158). The imagery adds feeling to the writing and this helps to emphasize the theme of Gatsby's success in this part of the novel.

Fitzgerald describes Gatsby's mansion more thoroughly than any other setting in the book. The mansion symbolized both the success in Gatsby's life as well as the success he did not achieve. Fitzgerald uses imagery, diction, and figurative language to describe this setting. Imagery is used to describe Gatsby's parties where "men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars." (4). This popularity portrays Gatsby as a successful person. There is more imagery when Fitzgerald describes the inside of Gatsby's mansion, which has "period bedrooms swathed in rose and lavender silk poolrooms…and a toilet set of pure dull gold." (6). The detailed portrayal of Gatsby's home show his success from a materialistic point of view. While his mansion seems to represent the great success he achieved, Gatsby's mansion is later described as a "huge incoherent failure of a house." (188). The words "huge incoherent failure" used together emphasize the idea that Gatsby was actually not successful. Also, Fitzgerald writes that one guest did not realize the "party was over," (188) and this metaphor contributes to the idea that Gatsby's extravagant life was just a cover for his unsuccessful life. The description of this setting is used to show that Gatsby could be perceived as successful in some ways, but unsuccessful in other areas of his life.

The description of Gatsby's funeral marks the final idea of Gatsby not achieving success in his life. Fitzgerald uses strong imagery and a depressed tone to describe this setting. The funeral is a pitiful affair that occurs on a gloomy, rainy day. Only a few of Gatsby's servants, Nick, Gatsby's father, and the man from Gatsby's library show up. There was a "sad procession of cars," (18) on the way to his burial led by a "motor hearse, horribly black and wet." (18). This setting sums up Gatsby's life, which turned out to be quite unsuccessful.

The settings that are emphasized by Fitzgerald add to the theme of success through detailed descriptions and the language and words used. The descriptive writing makes each setting impact the theme greatly. Gatsby looked successful on the outside, but he died without achieving happiness and the settings help to convey the this theme to the reader.

Like many stories, Alice Walkers Everyday Use contains opening and closing segments which are in sharp contrast to each other. The different styles in which the first and last portions of the story represent the significant changes experienced by Maggie and her mother. These changes, brought on by a brief visit from Maggies older, and more worldly sister, Dee.

The opening scene in Everyday Use presents a vivid picture of Maggie and her mothers yard. It also shows the extreme fondness the two rural women have for the yard. Maggies mother uses the word comfortable(88) to describe the yard and likens it to a living room. Also described in great detail is Maggies demeanor. She is depicted as nervous, homely and ashamed(88). Great weight is place on her burn scars, which run down her arms and legs. The mother, also the narrator, sees herself as being more masculine than feminine. She thinks of herself as being tough and impervious to inclement weather. However, admits that she could not look a ...strange white man in the eye(8). It is clear, that both the mother and Maggie are acutely aware that they are far different than Dee. The women seem intimidated and even envious of Dees ambitions.

In the following paragraphs, Dee arrives with a man, whom her mother believes may be her husband. Dee greets her sister and mother with an African salutation. It is here, that the differences between the three women begin to emerge. The mere fact that so little of the dialog that occurs involves Maggie, suggests how quiet and reserved she is. The mother comes off as passive and submissive, especially toward Dee. She often gives in to Dees requests without hesitation. For example, she agrees to address Dee by her newfound name, although she is clearly uncomfortable with the idea. She states If thats what you want us to call you, well call you.(). It becomes clear that while Dee is eager to take pictures of the place she once called home, she is glad to have moved on to a more civilized life. However, it also becomes evident that she is confused about her heritage. She announces to her kinfolk that she no longer wishes to be called Dee, but should now be referred to as Wangero. She exclaims that she cant ...bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me(). Despite her desire to escape the oppression that her past, she eagerly values the goods that stemmed from the oppression. A set of handmade quilts is just such an example. Dee expresses an interest in the ancestral quilts that have already been promised to Maggie. Dee feels that Maggie is not worthy of the quilts because Maggie will surely put them to everyday use, whereas Dee would display them. It is the debate over the quilts that serves as the transition to the closing portion of the story.

After listening to Dee offer several rather demeaning reasons as to why Maggie is not deserving of the quilts, the mother experiences a sudden urge to rebel against her eldest daughter. She takes the quilts from Dees clutches and gives them to Maggie, in a sense dismissing all of Dees accusations. The act of ripping the quilts from Dee and dumping them into Maggies lap liberates the two. It is an exclamation of their comfort with their place in the world. Maggie is clearly taken aback by her mothers actions Maggie just sat there on my bed with her mouth open.(4). After Dees exit from the scene a sudden and new mood is set. Now Maggie is describe as smiling. The mother describes the smile as ...a real smile, not scared.(5) This is in sharp contrast to the timid and sheepish girl in the opening scene. Next the two women sit and enjoy there time outside in the yard, where the story first began.

American Jet Industries is a company that deals with sales of airplanes and aircraft parts. Many people have assumed that the atmosphere within the company is that of a slow passed, peaceful, High technology working facility; however, this is a misconception that many people have when they are not introduced to the industry correctly.

The aircraft industry is a fast paced industry, where it requires, not only the sales persons' full attention, but also the use of all its talents and abilities to get the sale and complete the transactions.

Competition is so high in the industry that, if the sales person waits a couple of hours to make a decision of whether to purchase material to supply the airline or not, the material could have been sold and taken out of the market by another competitor. Depending on the aircraft that needs the material, the material could be so scares, that if there is any surplus in the market, it could get sold/purchased before anyone else has the opportunity to contemplate the purchase. One example of this is that of today. Our company went to locate that a customer in Europe needed. When we accessed the system to try to locate the item, we found that only one company had that part in their inventory. When we went to allocate the material, the vendor advised us that the material had been sold and shipped to a competitor. Unfortunately, since our company waited two hours to begin its allocation, the competition located and purchased the material. The good thing about this is that the material sold was being offered at a higher price than that of the manufacturer, so we contacted the manufacturer and were able to allocate the only one they had for a cheaper price.

The culture of the company is also an interesting point to introduce. Within the company, there is a competitive, stressful, relaxing, understanding, and complex culture. As stated previously, the company strives to be a top competitive in the industry. This produces a competitive atmosphere that creates much stress and anger within the teams. On the other hand, in other departments, such as the accounting department and the quality control department of the company, seems to be a relaxing atmosphere. Their jobs do not have to deal with sales and reaching sales goals. Therefore, their only concern is to make sure that the money comes in from the customers and that the material is in good shape. If that is not happening, they hand the problem to the sales manager for control and resolution.

The last observation is that of the technology of the company. Many people have had an impression that a small computer and a fax machine is the only thing needed to be able to accomplish sales. While that theory is correct, other points need to be considered when thinking about this. Some points to consider are those of the airline needs and standards. 0% of the airlines require the company to have certain programs where it facilitates requests and orders for them. So, if the company did not have those programs that require state of the art technology, they would not be able to receive requests and orders. American Jet Industries has spent thousands of dollars to obtain the necessary equipment to be able to comply with the airlines' needs and be able to compete at a high level with the best. One of those programs is that of Quantum Controls. That program is capable of researching the market and locating material needed. It is also capable of receiving messages via email and fax and also able to send emails and faxes without the need to purchase any additional software or hardware. Most airlines use this system to access their vendors and send requests to them and also to receive answers and send orders to their vendors.

In other words, American Jet Industries must be able to show the airlines that it is able to meet any of their requirements to get business from them. Whether it is meeting their quality control standards, their accounting needs or procurement needs, American Jet Industries is able to show its customers that it is a serious competitor and comply with their needs

Woodlands Indians of the Eastern Wilderness

The Woodland Indians were the first Indians that the American colonists met. In the

beginning the setlers from Europe thought that the Indians were ignorant savages. But

soon they found out that they can learn a lot from the Indians. Indian ways were valued

Cheap Custom Essays on Woodland Indians of the Easter Wilderness

because they were suited to convert the things around them into food, clothing ,

shelter, weapons, tools, and utensils. There were no stores in the wilderness, so the

families had to make these things for themselves.

Living and surviving in the Eastern Woodland Region

All the Eastern Woodland Indians lived in much the same way. But from place to place

there were differences in climate and available plants and animals. The tribes also differed

in housing, and clothing styles, in food habits ,and in means of transportation. The

Iroquois and certain other New York tribes built the larger long house. Its shape was

similar to that of the arched metal Quonset hut built during World War II. Five to a

dozen families might live together in the long house.

Perhaps the most widely used housing was the bark covered wigwam. Sometimes it

was shaped like a cone and sometimes it was more of a dome. The Indians made a frame

for this hut out of small flexible trees, or saplings. They stuck them firmly in the ground in

a circle, then bent them overhead in an arch and tied them together with tough bark fibers

or with rawhide. Next, other slender branches were wrapped in circles around the bent

poles and tied to them, and slabs of bark were tied to this frame to form the roof and

walls. Space was left vacant for a door and a smoke hole. Platforms inside served as

beds, chairs, and shelves.

Farming and food preparation

The woman planted corn, beans pumpkin, squash, tobacco, and melons in the gardens.

They harvested the crops and prepared the food. They parched, or toasted corn for the

warriors on the march. They also dried corn , squash, berries, meat, and fish for the cold

months. They stewed corn and beans into succotash and made soups of corn with meat or

fish in pottery jars. Some areas offered special things to eat such as in the forest of the

northeast, the Indians tapped the sugar maple trees and boiled the sap to make sugar.

Clothing

Many days of work were required to make the buckskin garments the Indians wore.

Tailoring the garments met cutting this skins with shell of flint knives and sewing them

with animal sinews(cords). At work the women wore a wraparound skirt, the men a

breech cloth. The men usually shaved their heads, leaving only a scalp lock. Their

headdresses were of dyed deer hair or a few feathers. The fur robes worn in the winter left

one shoulder bare.

Cultural and religious practices

Most of the Indian dances and ceremonials were healed for religious or superstitions

reasons. By honoring their spirits or gods, the Indians hoped to gain help and favor.

Medicine men or religious leaders danced to seek aid for sick. Hunters danced the deer

dance or the buffalo dance to attract abundant game. Farming tribes staged ceremonials

to bring rain or to make the corn grow or ripen. Certain dances dramatized stories from

the history or mythology of the tribe. Other ceremonies were held when children arrived

at manhood or womanhood, or to initiate them into the the religious secret societies of the

tribe. Although the purpose of a dance was serious, the Indians usually made it the

occasion for fun and sociability. In many tribes there were clowns or other fun makers

among the musicians or dancers. In the evening or at the end of a festival, social dances

were sometimes held.
