I think that the few Acts that I read from ?Macbeth? are very sad and have a lot of suspense and conflict. That is why my ten songs highlight the already mentioned characteristics of the story.

Act I demonstrates the concepts of appearances versus reality it also has a lot of conflict, suspense, and mystery. In this Act Macbeth discovers his dark side, because he and Lady Macbeth are planning to kill the king so Macbeth can take his place. I think that Act I is the one that has more suspense because no body really knows if Macbeth is going to commit the crime. ?Alone, Macbeth begins to have second thoughts about his murderous plan.? This quote makes it even more mysterious for the reader, which is why I think that this Act has a lot of suspense. In my CD, I selected these two songs ?Suicide? and ?I do it for you.? to highlight the concept of evil.

Act II is a little sadder that Act I because Macbeth had the chance of not committing the murder but he did, he committed the murder, ?Suddenly a dazed and terrified Macbeth enters, carrying the bloody daggers that he used to murder Duncan.? and now he is feeling guiltiness. ?He imagines a voice that warns Macbeth shall sleep no more and is too afraid to return to the scene of the crime.? For these reasons, I selected these two songs. ?You got it bad? and ?I am walking away.?

Cheap Custom Essays on Analyzing Macbeth's Play

Act III has a lot of mystery and confusedness since the witches told Macbeth that Banquo?s sons would be kings. Macbeth persuades two murderers to kill Banquo and his son. Therefore, that shows that Macbeth is really an evil person. Because of that, I chose these two songs; ?I?ll go with you? and ?Addictive,? which reveal the evilness and the mysteries of this Act.

Act IV is one of the most interesting Acts because Macbeth meets with the three witches demanding them to tell him his future, the witches raise three apparitions. The first , an armed head, next a bloody child ,the third apparition tells him that he will never be defeated until the trees of Birnam Wood move toward his castle. After all this, Macbeth now feels confident, but at the end, everything will go bad. For this Act, I selected the following songs ?All my life? and ?Nothing,? which reveal all the mystery and anger of Macbeth.

Act V is one of the saddest Acts because all of the things that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth did to gain power are now all gone; now they are both dead. Lady Macbeth is starting to hallucinate ?Lady Macbeth appears to be washing imagined blood from her hands.? Macbeth is going crazy his soul has been stolen, he is killed internally.? While Macbeth prepares for battle, the doctor reports that he cannot cure Lady Macbeth, whose illness is mental, not physical.? his wife, Lady Macbeth, is now dead and he is all alone, then he discovers that Birnam Wood seems to be moving toward the castle, Macbeth is now fearing that the prophecies have deceived him. ?He decides to leave the castle to fight and die on the battlefield.? In my CD I chose there two songs to highlight the sadness of this Act ?I will always love you? and ?unbreak my heart.?

AN ATUOBIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE

Looking back at different events that have occurred in my life I would have to say that one in particular stands out the most in my memory as it had a very strong impact on my life.

Since that fateful day, I have looked at things and people in a totally new light. I try not to take things for granted and appreciate those I love a bit more than I normally would have.

Every year my grandmother would have all the family over her house for Christmas, we would be around thirty people. She would do all the cooking and preparation without help from anyone, this plus working full time was no mean feat, but I don't think I ever heard her complain about it.

Order custom research paper on an autobiographical narrative

One year mum just got a bee in her bonnet and said that she wanted Christmas at our house; I was horrified at the thought as I knew mom would make us help and do things!

Now the big test would have to convince my grandfather of it all, he comes from the old school. As far as he was concerned Christmas was at his house and we all went there as a sign of respect and no correspondence would be entered into.

Mum and my grandmother worked on him for days and still he would not budge. My grandmother had enough and yelled at him to come and shut up or stay at home by yourself. Finally he begrudgingly gave in and said all right.

The look of relief on my grandmother's face was priceless; this would be the first time in 4 years that she would have to just get up on Christmas morning, go to church and come over our house and be served.

Christmas morning finally came and I was annoyed that I was not allowed to lull around and not do much as we had to get ready for the coming of the "family". Mum had us all doing " jobs" and that did not sit very well with me.

It ended up being a great day and I cam still remember how happy my grandmother was just sitting and enjoying her family, the contended look on her face has to be worth a million bucks, it was also so hot that day that we got buckets of water and drenched ourselves. We all laughed so much and as much as he won't admit it my grandfather also enjoyed himself.

You might think that what is so special about a Christmas day, well it was my grandmothers last Christmas with us as sadly she passed away later, None of us were aware that this would be her last Christmas with us and sometimes I wonder if we had known would we have reacted differently. That Christmas day gave me a great memory and now when I have moments that I miss her so much I have something to think about.

I am extremely grateful for that memory of that Christmas day and I still can picture my grandmother just sitting, relaxing and enjoying her family which meant the world to h

The Secret Sharer

"The Secret Sharer" by Joseph Conrad shows the struggle between the captain and a man that he thinks is his alter ego. The author shows this throughout the story by allowing the reader to see how much the captain believes he has in common with a man who has snuck aboard during the middle of the night.

The story starts out by informing the reader that this is the captain's first command on this ship. He does not know his ship or his crew very well. During the night, he takes aboard a man who is hanging from a ladder over the side of the ship. He invites the man onto the ship and gives him one of his own sleeping suits, which happens to be the right size. They begin to whisper about the circumstances in which the man has arrived; he then leads the man to his stateroom unannounced to his crew. In these beginning events of the story one starts to see that the captain does not want his crew to find out about his discovery.

During the first night aboard, the captain begins to really see himself in Leggett. One sees this when the captain is thinking to himself, "I gazed upon my other self for a while before drawing across carefully the two green curtains…" He later goes on to think, "…trying to clear my mind of the confused sensation of being in two places at once."

Write my Essay on the secret sharer

One can tell that the captain does not trust his crew with his discovery of the stowaway. He shows this by hiding Leggett in the bathroom when the steward goes to clean his stateroom. One also sees this when the captain sits down to breakfast and thinks "I was constantly watching myself, my secret self, as dependent on my actions as my own personality sleeping in that bed, behind that door which faced me as I sat at the head of the table."

Latter one sees that the captain questions the reality of his secret sharer in his stateroom. The steward goes to hang up the captain's coat in his stateroom and does not discover Leggett. "I asked myself, that he is not visible to other eyes than mine?" The captain thinks to himself.

Towards the end of the story when the captain decides to help Leggett get off the ship and swim to land, he is worried about what he is doing, "I wondered what my double there in the sail locker thought of this commotion." He also goes on to think, "…my second self was making now ready to slip out and lower himself overboard." During this time the captain is coming dangerously close to shore. One now sees that Leggett is also thinking of the captain by letting go of a hat, given him by the captain to protect him from the sun, to help the captain find the right current.

One sees thought out this story how a captain with new ship and a new crew was able to bond with a stowaway. He saw this stowaway, Leggett, as himself at a younger age. One also sees the captain as someone who wanted to save Leggett and not turn him in to his former captain. He in turn helped him get to land, almost running his ship aground trying to get closer, and start a new life for himself.

From the beginning of the civilization on earth, people have many different superstitions, or beliefs about life. People believe if they were to do certain things, they would have good luck. Some of these superstitions go on for such long periods of time and people do them so often that they become traditions or rituals. Also, people who conform to old rituals and traditions often lose their minds and commit vicious actions against others out of tradition. For instance, some Hindu communities used to immolate a virgin to satisfy Goddess Kali from their beliefs that this sacrifice would bring luck and prosperity for them. In her short story, "The Lottery", Shirley Jackson is trying to point out that kind of evidences which people do in the name of tradition or ritual by describing a small town where the people have been taught to believe that in order for their crop to be abundant for the year, some individual have to be sacrificed.

The ritualistic characteristics of the lottery reveal through evidences like town people's commentary on the traditional and modern ways of holding the lottery as well as observation of this gear's proceedings. In the very beginning of the story, we see people of a small town gathers in the central square on June 7th to celebrate the annual lottery, right before the crop season. Among them there is much excitement and interest as the rituals of the event proceed. Every year the villagers take each persons name, make them to draw slips of paper from the black box. The person, who gets the paper with the mark on in, wins the lottery and gets stoned to death. They justify this dangerous ritual from the belief that "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon" which means if they have a lottery before cropping season they will have a good season. This is one of those beliefs, or superstitions, they have that makes to think that their luck is going to become good.

According to old man Warner, who has been attending the lottery for seventy-seven years, villagers would be 'crazy' to give up the lottery. When Mr. Adam told old man Warner that the north village was talking about giving up the lottery, old man Warner snorted, "Pack of crazy fools. Listening to young folks, nothing's good for them." He then warned the villagers that their work ethics would be destroyed as soon as they gave up the lottery. He commented negative about the people who were talking to give up the lottery that "next thing you know, theyll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work any more, live that way for a while". Thus, the belief of disrupting the corn season by giving up the lottery and the fear of getting chosen for the lottery made the people of the town to destroy each other instead of working together to destroy the tradition.

As Tessie Hutchinson is getting stoned, someone from her community puts a stone in her sons hand. Even the closest family member participates in the horror. The children had stones already, and someone gave little Davey Hutchinson a few pebbles. (Jackson, The Lottery page 7) This action shows how tradition is being passed on literally from generation to generation. This stoning is the way that the people of the community act out their fear of being singled out, separated from the herd, being the one stoned. In other words, the tradition is so powerful and it has existed so long that no one will challenge it because they fear to change.

Over the last twenty years immigration has been on the rise. The number of legal immigrants entering the country more than tripled from 180 until 1.

The reason is simply because a lot of families are sick of living in countries that have nothing to offer them. They all want to come here and start a new life as a free citizen in the United States of America.

Women and African Americans have also gone through many changes in 1. Women are now being hired for important political roles. Jannett Reno was elected by President Clinton to be the first women Attorney General. Many other women would end up to be leaders or owners of large businesses. Women are standing up for their rights as citizens, and they are winning the fight for equality.

African American's voices are being heard. Rodney King was beaten by a couple of dirty, racist police officials. Because of this, the two men stood trial, and were sent to prison because of this. Throughout American history African Americans, and other minorities such as Asians, and Hispanics have been mistreated. They are being seen as a big part of American culture.

Native Americans in the United States have always been in the headlines for equal rights. Their living conditions in 1 actually improved because of a large number of Indian Reservations being built up throughout the Midwest and the West. On the reservations they make a major part of their money because of the large number of casino's and hotels that they own. They are also making money in small shops selling hand made artifacts such as quilts, rugs, mats, and many wooden pieces. The rise is the reservations means a rise in homes for many of the tribe's people who need homes to live in. The government is also paying them more money in order for them to expand their land area's.

Even as the rise of legal immigrants rose, the need for jobs also got much larger. This created a huge problem. Immigrants moving into the country had very hard times finding jobs, and even places to live. There were some neighborhoods that had a big problem of immigrants moving into the same area that they had been living in all their lives.

In the year 1 there had been many changes that minorities in the United States had gone through. The number of immigrants entering the country was on the rise, but because of Bill Clinton's plan the number of housing developments was growing through the United States. This meant better living conditions, and a better opportunity for immigrants to set roots and start a new life. Minorities of all kind in this country were now being given better paying jobs, and some people of different races were now being hired for government jobs, and business presidents.

Although the changes in 1 gave people a better chance in making a living, America still has a long way to go to get total equality.f the best.

Richard is not an immature small boy anymore but now he is in the struggles of life and that makes him mature than normal than a boy of his age. As Richard grows older, he becomes conscious of his environment and the racial prejudice existing in his

surroundings. Richard's sensitive nature rebels against the discrimination of the White people against the blacks.

Richard was free to enjoy life, as his mother worked outside to support them. Richard's ordered life comes to an end, after his mother's illness. Now, he is forced to take up employment to support his family. Matters come to a head, when his mother gets a paralytic stroke. Richard finds himself helpless to tackle the situation. Not only that but Richard is now forced into religion much against his wish. His granny, a member of the

Cheap University Papers on Black Boy

Seventh-day Adventist Church, forces religion on him, with a hope to change him. However, overdose of religion makes Richard hate the church and gives him a negative view. Soon the racist world, religion, hunger, family becomes his enemies. Richard tried to support his family by working but many times he was discriminated and ended up quitting the job. Richard went through so many jobs in short periods of time. I don't think he is satisfied with his life at this point because there is too many pressure on him and he can't get out of it. Richard's sensitive nature rebels against the discrimination of

the White people and his family. I think he acts the way he acts because Richard wants some freedom in his life and the desires that he wants to pursue.

Themes throughout chapter three to chapter six were hunger, racism, rebellion, and religion. Richard feels isolated in the house because of rigid rules, religious discipline and adult company. His granny and Aunt Addie consider him a sinner, as he is more interest in worldly pleasures than in God. Religion comes between Richard and his conscience. It was not only granny or Aunt Addie, who forced him to follow the path of Godliness, but it was his own mother who persuaded him to attend the Sunday school of the Methodist church. They restrict his life with the tenets of Christianity. ' No longer set apart for being sinful, I felt that I could breathe again, live again that I had been released from a prison' (1) This passage shows how Richard is under so much pressure to believe in God and attending to a church and how much he hates to be in there. Another theme was racism. Richard accepts a job in a White woman's house because he is assured of a decent salary and meals. However, when he is given stale food, he refuses to eat

it. The woman questions him about his education and goal in life and Richard mentions that he wishes to become a writer. " You'll never be a writer," she said. "Who on earth put such ideas into your nigger head?" (147). She insults him by telling that he would never succeed in his mission. Not only is Richard's pride wounded, but also his identity as a Negro is threatened and again he was discriminated against.

I just thought Richard grew up so rapidly in short time of period. Even though he goes through so much trouble he deals with it and it made me wonder if I were Richard I couldn't possibly take all that things he took. Those made me respect this character a lot. I think these days' kids are so spoiled compare to Richard and that we should think about it and try to change because being spoil isn't good at all.

William Golding's Lord of the Flies is much more than a simple story about a few boys stranded on an island. It is an elaborate political allegory with social implications reaching back to the fundamental composition of human nature. Golding's dark naturalistic predisposition shrouds those inborn qualities as Lord of the Flies provides its reader with an overtly pessimistic perspective on unadulterated civilization (or lack thereof). He is able to do this through a uniquely symbolic demographic. The book's three main characters represent an abbreviated cross-section of humanity Piggy as the intellectual, Ralph being the proletariat, and Jack acting as a personified anarchist state.

As the story progresses, we see the gradual decline of Piggy's character, both literally and figuratively. At the book's inception, we are introduced to a bright young boy, eager to please and offer his intellect to the group for its collective benefit. His brains are recognized solely by Ralph, who discards them as superfluous and an annoyance. But Golding makes a key distinction with Piggy's character with the fact that his "specs" are an indispensable asset to the group; without them they could not make fire, and ultimately could not have been rescued. Society mocks its savior. This scorn is tragically punctuated with his death near the end of the book.

Ralph is the leader of the group by general consensus, but, like Piggy, his authority undergoes steady compromise with the group's reversion to savagery. His role in the book is the voice of reason. While not eloquent or brilliant, he brings a sense of moderation with him; a sensible approach to the dilemmas faced by him and his peers. But sensibility and reason are rendered completely ineffectual in an environment of anarchy, and toward the end of the book he is literally running for his life; a mutinous and bloodthirsty mob hot on his trial, led by Jack.

Jack is the antithesis of law and order. He realizes that his only hope of acquiring power is through the destruction of the very society he wishes to control. In order for his authority to be realized, he must eliminate the remnant clinging to traditional societal values, i.e. Ralph and Piggy; whom he hunts and kills respectively. This ruthlessness and brutality is the signature of despotism, and the foundation for such a political trajectory is clearly laid through Jack's obscene actions.

Lord of the Flies is a timeless masterpiece. The social and political issues brought to light in Golding's novel are as much a concern today as they were millennia ago. We see correlations between his work and history in many places from the purges of Stalin to the crucifixion of Christ, the application of Golding's forewarning and idealisms are endless. Humanity would be well served to heed the wisdom of this great author.

"The Flea" is a story of a man trying to convince his lover to surrender her virginity to him, and at the center of his plea is a flea. In this clever poem Donne uses a flea, blood, and the death of the flea as an analogy for the oldest most primal exchange, sex. Donne, through symbolic images, not only questions the validity of coveting virginity but also the importance of sex as it pertains to life. The metaphors in "The Flea" are plentiful, but the symbols repeated throughout the poem are clear, beginning with the most prevalent, the flea. This minute creature is full of symbolic meanings. During the time this poem was written (the Renaissance) the flea was used in many poems about sex. In this particular poem the flea bites is symbolic of the act of sex from the man's remark in the beginning, "Mark but this flea, and mark in this, how little that which deny'st me is" (886). The flea is small and trivial, and while the man's lover denies him sex, we see the connection, his comparison of the two as such minute, insignificant things.

Historically speaking, sex in the 17th century was thought of as a mixing of the blood, and so the man begins to rationalize that, in a sense, the flea has mixed the blood of them both, thereby doing what his lover would not.

At this point he argues that since the flea has "mixed their blood", why shouldnt they? He argues that since their bloods have mingled and are therefore one blood made of two (886), they are essentially of the same flesh and are therefore married! The flea is described as a marriage temple and a carrier of life, but then in the following stanza as something insignificant and small. Donne applies clever duality to the flea and therefore to sex. The metaphor develops more as it relates to the other symbols. Blood is used more than once as a symbol. The speaker talks of the blood reverently and likens it to honor. Blood in this poem is symbolic of life and the soul. The speaker remarks that in the flea his blood and his lover's blood were mixed, therefore during sex their souls are mingled and become one. This is where the flea becomes a marriage temple. Now, not only has he reinforced his argument for the seduction of his lover, but he has also given a reason not to kill the flea. The flea at this point, at least in the man's argument, is a symbol of marriage and copulation. Thus he defends it when his lover moves to kill it. He argues that by spilling the mixed blood of both, by killing the flea, she is in a sense committing murder. He also states that she would be guilty of sacrilege by desecrating the holy temple of marriage.

Ultimately when the flea is killed, he twists his argument around and declares that despite the sacred morals he has been preaching, killing the flea did not really denounce his lovers honor and despite the hallowed values she has invoked in refusing to have premarital sex, doing so would not denounce her honor either.

This is an odd poem, but it shows Donne's ability to turn unlikely images into detailed symbols of love and romance. Using the image of a flea that has just bitten the two lovers illustrates the bigger issue at hand. "How little that which thou deny'st me is" (886). Donnes insinuation at the erotic without ever directly referring to sex, while at the same time leaving no doubt as to exactly what he means, is as much a source of the poems wit as the ridiculous image of the flea is.

What effects the resistance of a wire?

We are going to conduct an experiment to find out the resistance of a wire by changing some variables.

These include

Length of wire

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Resistance of a wire

Material used for wire

Gauge of wire

While we conduct the experiment to find out which if any of these variables affects the resistance of wire, we will have to keep some things the same to make the tests valid. The things we wont differ will be, the same equipment (because some of the power packs may give out more voltage than another), the current which will be 0.5A (to stop the wire heating and therefore the resistance would change), and for the same reason we wont change the temperature.

Once the experiment is set up it will look like this.

Prediction

I predict that the longer i make the piece of wire, the higher the resistance will be, because the free electrons will have more metal ions to collide with, so less of them will diffuse at the end of the wire.

I think the wire will heat up if we do it at to high a current so we are going to keep it at 0.5A thus keeping the tests fair and allowing us to proceed with the experiment.

Which Variable will we change?

We have decided to change the length of wire as this is a continuous variable and will give us the most accurate result over any other variable.

Step-by-step method

1. To begin with, i will set up my apparatus for the experiment as shown on the first page

. I will then get my results table ready for being filled in, which will include voltage, current, length and resistance.

. I will keep the current at 0.5A by using the variable resistor already in the circuit to make sure the test stays fair. If i didnt then the wire would heat up causing the resistance to be greater or less.

4. I will carry out the experiment three times per length to make sure there are no anomalies.

5. Each time we do experiment we will increase the length of the wire by 10cm begining at 10cm and continuing up to the length of 100cm. As i increase the length of wire the resistance will also rise. I can figure out the resistance by using the formula W=V/I and make a note of it in my results.

Results

Table

I made an average of our three results to make it easier to plot on the graph. there was only one anomaly which was in the form of 0.8 in the very first test at 10cm, i discarded this from the average.

Analysis

My prediction of the longer the wire got the more resistance there is was correct. You can clearly see on the graph that for every 10cms longer the wire got there was 5W more resistance.

Conclusion

The resistance increased as the length of wire was increased is because there was a great amount of metal ions for the electrons to collide with, making it more if a struggle for the free electrons to diffuse, creating more resistance. This was just what i predicted, and because i kept the temperature and the current the same it cause my graph to look like this

However, i didnt think before hand about the affect of the free electrons hitting each other causing the resistance to rise still. Although this wasnt of big significance it still effected my results.

Abstract)

MARKETING PRINCIPLES FROM MAHABHARATHA

OBJECTIVE

1) To understand Marketing strategies mentioned in Mahabharatha and understand their relevance to today's business.

Cheap Custom Essays on Marketing principles from mahabharatha

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are umpteen number of books written on Marketing by authors as reputed as Tom Peters, Al Ries, C.K . Prahalad et al. These books cover every aspect of marketing. So what does one has to learn from Mahabharatha, that too about Marketing? And wasn't Mahabharatha written in an era when the concept of Marketing did not exist? So how can it teach anything about Marketing? How could have a saint, Veda Vyasa, who did not know anything about Marketing could have written about marketing?

Mahabharatha has contributed immensely to the Indian literature and culture. Its contribution to the fields of strategic Management, HRD, philosophy, politics, Marketing Management, is immense. It has the most important aspect, which many books on Marketing Management clearly fail to mention. Maha Bharatha teaches strategies that are competitor oriented, whereas classical marketing books teach us strategies that are customer oriented.

If you ask Al Ries and Jack trout about the best book ever written on Marketing, they would answer that it is " Pinciples of war" written by Carl von Clausewitz. But funnily again Carl von Clausewitz lived in an era where the word Marketing was Unknown. His book doesn't contain a single word like Marketing, customer, advertising or even business. In fact he did not even know the meaning of the word marketing. He also did not write about marketing. But still that book is called as the best ever book written on Marketing. But we don't know whether Al Ries and Jack trout read Mahabharatha. Had they read it maybe they would have changed their opinion. Because Mahabharatha covers many areas which Clausewitz doesn't cover.

I here do not claim that Mahabharatha is the ultimate book on Marketing or that it itself is enough to understand Marketing. But I claim with confidence that any study on Marketing is incomplete without reading Mahabharatha. For the sake of convenience I have divided the article into following subheadings

1) Mahabharatha on Campaign planning

) Mahabharatha on Branding

) Mahabharatha on Logos and trademarks

4) Mahabharatha on Negotiation

5) Mahabharatha on Motivation

Those are the common marketing principles discussed by Mahabharatha. Further there are some unique marketing strategies given by Mahabharatha. They are

1) Common enemy strategy

) "Unity at all costs" strategy

) 'Creating a powerful enemy ' strategy

4) Marketing strategies of the master strategist-lord Krishna

5) Arjuna's strategy on small competitors

6) "Offense is the defense" strategy.

7) Decoy Marketing strategy.

Choose TWO or more poems by one poet you admire, and with close reference to the poems write an essay to justify your choice.

One poet I admire is James K. Baxter, because this New Zealand poet deals with the issues of the society he lived in, using various techniques to reiterate these themes. Baxter published more than 0 books of poetry before his death in 17, and he opposed Western materialism, and advocated social change and the spiritual values Catholic faith and Maori culture. These views are prominent in two of Baxter's poems, He Waiata mo Te Kare and The Ballad of Calvary Street. Also, in these poems there is constant reference to the lifestyles and cultures of New Zealanders. The Ballad of Calvary Street deals with the ugliness which he saw as being present behind the 'decent' façade of middle-class New Zealand life, while He Waiata mo Te Kare is a 'love letter' to his wife.

One important theme that Baxter dealt with during the 150's and 160's was the façade of the New Zealand middle-class. The Ballad of Calvary Street is one of his clearest expressions of this theme. Baxter extensively uses religious references to emphasise the barren lives of the old couple. This shows that the poem was written at a time when Baxter had converted to the Catholic religion. These references are shown in the title. Calvary was the place where Christ suffered and was put to death. It's a comparison with the last four lines of the poem. Also a comparison with line four, where the old couple's house is "an empty tomb", the Calvary Street seems unlikely to be the source of any hope.

Baxter uses many figurative devices to emphasise his feelings and views. In He Waiata mo Te Kare, Baxter uses many similes such as "With skins like fine leather" to enhance the readers vision of his wife. To appeal to this vision, Baxter also includes literal images like "…my hands were blistered". These create a rhythm which in turn creates unity like that of his relationship with his wife even though they were no longer living together,

Help with essay on James K Baxter

In both poems Baxter draws attention to the social setting of New Zealand. He makes us aware of culture, religion and stereotypes. Baxter makes us aware of his cultural linkage with strong Maori phrases including "Taku ngakau ki a koe!" This translates in english to 'my heart to you' and again, show his Maori wife how much he loves her.

In Ballad of Calvary Street Baxter brings in symbols throughout his poems to show how unforgiving and resigned the relationship between the man and the woman is.

"And that affair with Mrs Flynn

(It happened thirty years ago)"

Baxter describes how the relationship is 'going through the motions' and the couple live in a sad isolation. The man's 'territory' is the toilet and the woman's the kitchen, as they seem to live very separate lives to one and other.

I admire Baxter and his poetry as it has made me aware of both social and economic issues, not only in New Zealand but also around the world. In Ballad of Calvary Street and He Waiata mo Te Kare Baxter asks questions that are rarely answered, which in turn leaves the reader to try and interpret. The techniques he uses and the way he approaches the subject in a cynical manner highlight these themes to an even larger extent.

It was a beautiful day in April 1,00, when the Lord unexpectedly called me to His Presence. I was at the "Pearly Gates" we hear so much about, but it was not Saint Peter that greeted me, it was God Himself. It is God who tells a person if they are accepted or not accepted, no one else does His Work for Him.

Awed by His Presence, yet a feeling of Love and Compassion beyond my comprehension filled my being and calmed me in spite of my situation.

I could not speak, and, indeed, there was no need to speak, as our Father knows what is in our heart before the words are even formed.

"Be at peace, Dan, I have called you for My Reason, and this Reason you will shortly know also. You have been told by your well meaning but confused religions, that at this time you will by judged by Me and you will gain entrance to either Heaven or Hell, but do not worry, for neither is the case.

Cheap University Papers on Humanity's Reason for Being

"I know you well. You have done by your family as well as any man could have done; totally dedicated to the care of your children and your wife, there is no mark against you. By the standards and understanding of the religions, no one would deny you the right to enter Heaven; no one except ME. My Laws, which you have lived by, were the ones which suited you, were comfortable to you and allowed you to live your life according to your will. You did not overly concern yourself with the situation of other people, the country in which you live, the planet upon which you and your children depend for life, and you did not even think to consider your reason for being beyond taking care of your immediate family.

"Dan, turn around!"

At His Will, I turned and saw the entire Earth and all the people and life supported by Her Body. In the midst of the beautiful planet God gave us, my attention was riveted by the condition of the people. There was little joy in the midst of more anguish than I could imagine. I could feel the suffering of every child and adult; I could feel the confusion in the minds of the people wondering why God has given them a life plagued with so many hurts and sorrows; I saw the Body of the Earth being raped and destroyed by greed and fear.

As this awareness grew in my thoughts, I suddenly realized that what is taking place on the Earth is my responsibility, taking care of my immediate family is not enough! I was horrified that I had let down my larger family of Humanity and not a thought either for the Earth and respect for Her Life.

As I watched the scenes on the Earth unfold, I just knew that I was going to hell and even that would be to good for one such as I; anyone who could allow such things to occur certainly could not gain entrance to Heaven.

"Be at peace, Dan. As I said, there is no heaven or hell as you imagine it. To get into My Heaven, you must bring another; no one gains entrance by themselves. Expand on that and you will understand that all of My Children will enter My Heaven at the same time. The Bible calls it "The Dividing of Times."

"Now," and the Voice of God penetrated by being as it had not done before, "be aware that I created you and all of Life. I did not create you to be a pet or a slave; I CREATED YOU TO SERVE ME AND NO OTHER!!! My Prophets and My Son, the Christ have faithfully delivered to you MY LAWS and they are to be obeyed."

"It is now time for you to return to your loving family, Dan. Now you know to change your ways and tell others what you have learned. You must work for all of My Children, work to understand My Laws and continually work to align your will with MY WILL, for it is MY WILL THAT WILL BE DONE ON EARTH."

Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty

Problem Statement

Cheap University Papers on Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty

What molecule allows the transfer of genetic information to transform Streptococcus pneunomoniae from a non virulent (R) strand to a virulent strand (S) of Streptococcus pneunomoniae?

Background

In 18 an army doctor named Fred Griffith tried to develop a vaccine against Streptococcus pneunomoniae which caused a type of pneumonia. Griffith had no success in creating a vaccine, but he found out that the bacteria had two different forms. One form was the smooth (S) form and the other was the rough form (R). The rough (R) form of the bacteria was not harmful, but the smooth (S) form was lethal. He created an experiment in which he Heat-Killed the lethal smooth form of the bacteria and mixed them with the harmless rough form. When he did this he discovered that the rough form of the bacteria was "transformed" into the lethal smooth (S) form of the bacteria.

Hypothesis

If SIII, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and RNase (enzymes which break down sugars, proteins, and RNA) are combined with the S strand of Streptococcus pneunomoniae and it continues to transform the R strand into the S strand then DNA is the molecule that holds genetic information (DNA is the transformation principle).

Variables

Extraneous variables

- Sterile equipment (droppers, test tubes, etc.)

- Sterile enzyme solutions

- Same temperature

- Same humidity

- Same ventilation

- Same air

- Same enzymes used

- Same amount of time for enzymes to react

- Same techniques used to mix enzymes

Experimental variable

- The ability of the S strand to transform the R strand into the S strand.

Materials

- Detergent (for lysing)

- Enzyme SIII

- Enzyme Trypsin

- Enzyme Chymotrypsin

- Enzyme RNase

- Enzyme DNase

- Alcohol (for precipitation of nucleic acids)

- Test tubes

- Droppers

- Microscope

- Wet slides

- Bunsen burner

- Live S strand Streptococcus pneunomoniae

- Live R strand Streptococcus pneunomoniae

Procedure

1. Put S strands of Streptococcus pneunomoniae into a test tube.

. Heat-kill the S strands of Streptococcus pneunomoniae with a Bunsen burner.

. Add detergent to lyse the heat-killed S strand.

4. Add enzyme SIII to eliminate to sugar coat within the test tube.

5. Add enzyme Trypsin and Chymotrypsin to break down proteins within the test tube.

6. Mix the S strand lysate with live R strand Streptococcus pneunomoniae.

7. Observe the reaction and record information to see if a transformation of the R strand into an S strand takes place.

8. After the observation add alcohol to the S strand lysate to precipitate nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)

. Add RNase to break down RNA.

10. Mix the S strand lysate with live R stand Streptococcus pneunomoniae.

11. Observe the reaction and record information to see if a transformation of the R strand into an S strand takes place.

1. After the observation add DNase to the S strand lysate to break down the DNA.

1. Mix the S strand lysate with live R strand Streptococcus pneunomoniae.

14. Observe the reaction and record information to see if a transformation of the R strand into an S strand takes place.

Conclusion

A conclusion about the problem was reached through the results of the experiment

and the molecule that contains genetic information which allows the transfer of genetic

information to transform Streptococcus pneunomoniae from a non virulent (R) strand to a

virulent strand (S) of Streptococcus pneunomoniae.

Divine Wind - racism

Written by bilwani

The Divine Wind describes an Australia that is tarnished by racism, hatred and distrust, and yet the novel ends on an optimistic note. Do you agree?

The novel is set during a World War. The tension and separation of races during a war seemed evident in Australia. As a multicultural country including Japanese and Aborigine population, conflicting attitudes towards these races had to be imminent. I entirely agree with the above statement due to the unequal treatment of the aborigines, tension between the Japanese population and characters such as Hart showing lack of trust over his lover Mitsy

Buy custom Divine wind term paper

With a war against the Japanese was the trigger for racism in Australia. All throughout the novel elements of separation are presented. The Japanese are somewhat divided from white Australians. First of all Broome has a "Register of Aliens? this was a register or list that kept track of foreign people. This implied that foreigners were seen as aliens and that they didn't really belong in Australia. The Sennosukes?names had to be changed because their original names seemed "…too foreign to our ears.?The Japanese living area is Chinatown shows the reader that perhaps whites have put the Japanese into their own little area. Chinatown contains houses that are far smaller and in general with little fortunes unlike the white Australians. It is the broad attitude towards the Japanese that creates a war and endlessly kills Alice.

Aborigines are treated unequally and are downgraded in Broome. The jobs of aborigines are in majority dirty (cleaning jobs), they work for the whites. Also when Mr. Killian is talking about purity at the dinner, he declares that black workers will do all the work while 'we?(whites) sit inside. Aborigines do not even get equal opportunity, an example is when Derby's interview with the officer is forged and consequently Carl Venning simply lets Derby to fight his case without any support. Aborigines have been replaced with stereotypes and generalisations from the Broome community especially all aborigines being alcoholics and inferior. Hart's lack of trust for characters in the novel such as Mitsy and Jamie are just some signs of Disher showing an Australia that is tarnished from distrust. Mitsy and Hart are close friends and at one time lovers. Nevertheless, Hart still has thoughts about Mitsy secretly seeing Jamie. Hart asks Jamie, "What's going on between you and Mitsy.?Some might argue that Hart is only caring about his love but when Hart secretly follows Mitsy around town the reader recognises Hart's personality of distrust. Another aspect of distrust is from the white community concerning over aborigines of Broome Your Abo is unreliable... Hell collaborate. Hell guide the Japs? Since whites know that they are separate and unpleasant to other races, they fear the aborigines will help the Japanese in their desire to takeover Broome.

Although the novel ends on an optimistic note, the future for Broome doesn't seem promising. With racial tension and war momentarily easing, it is foreseeable in the future to begin once more. The condition of Australia at that time took Alice's life and disadvantaged all races by preventing social harmony.
