In "Where To Put Your Hands," author Lee Tonouchi describes the main character as a shy, down to earth guy and a grandson who is always lectured by his grandmother. The constant pressure from his grandmother, to find a girlfriend, made it harder for him to find one. The main character has gone to school with Joy, a popular, young and smart childhood friend whom he has known for quite sometime. The other main character in "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," author Wendy Miyake is a young teenage girl who was different from other teenagers. When she was a child, her favorite superhero was Wonder Woman. She was fascinated and wanted to become that superhero.

The main character in "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," is shy whereas the narrator in "Where To Put Your Hands" is bold. In "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," the main character is a shy girl. She admired the popular girls from school. She says, "Basically the system worked if you were skillful with pompoms, exuded a consistant aura of perkiness or were born with incredible bone structure. You saw the coolness of the pyramids summits." She wanted to be on the top of that pyramid or popularity not in the middle where she was a nobody. In "Where To Put Your Hands," the main character lacked self-confidence. He admired Joy, a smart, pretty and popular high school girl. He says, "She wuz like my ideal. I dunno why but everytime I wanted fo' talk to her I got all nerjous. Cuz one pretty nerd is like one contradiction in terms, ah." Since intermediate school, the main character was always scared to talk to Joy. He felt the best way not to panic was to not talk to her at all.

The main character in "Where To Put Your Hands," was very conscientious. The main character admired Joy from afar. He had the urge to dance with Joy the whole night at the Leo Club function. "I remember I wanted so bad fo' dance with Joy. I had my eye on Joy da whole night. I made da kine mental comparison fo' see wot all da guys she axed had in common fo' see if I had chance." Unfortunately, he had the oppurtunity to dance with Joy, but when he attempted to ask her to dance, another girl approached him and asked him if he wanted to dance. In contrast to "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," the main character was furious. After several rejections by asking her guy friends to junior prom, she says, "Was it a part of my anatomy too small here, too large there? What? The questions kept coming. Could you choose a part? Pinpoint the problem." She wanted to be heard. She didn't understand why her own friends wouldn't go with her to the junior prom. "I wasn't looking for a four-month commitment but rather a fun night."

The final difference between the main characters in "Where To Put Your Hands" and "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," is one is overwhelmed, while the other is arrogant. The main character from "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," was so stunned that Scott, a popular high school football star, wanted to go with her to the prom. "Well…my daughter..y-you know the one who lives in my house. Yah, well…she uh bought this beautiful white dress, see, and ah…these bids you see…and I-I'd hate for it to go to waste." "I'd be glad to take her." "And she has these pretty gloves that go with the dress…and oh I don't know how to say this…" "Mr. Iwamoto, I'll take her." She was so happy that she got to go with him. Whereas, the main character in "Where To Put Your Hands," was arrogant. He says, "Somehow I knew we had a certain chemistry though. Could she possibly like me too? I mean I not da most good-looking guy in da world, ah…" He wanted Joy to like him for who he was. And although he did feel that Joy did like him too, he wanted to know for sure. The narrator compared himseld to Michael Furoyam, Rommel Ofalsa, and Kyung Taek Kang, a few of the other guys, who got to dance with Joy, the girl he wants to be with.

Merchant of Venice

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Merchant of Venice

In Shakespeare's comedy "The Merchant of Venice", Shakespeare uses split settings, Venice and Belmont. These two settings represent complete opposites, and these differences allow Shakespeare to build tension and suspense in the play. Venice is a place of hatred, destruction, and violence. A complete opposite, Belmont is a haven for lovers, where peace thrives, and a place where people go to confess their feelings.

Venice is a very important, historical city especially during the Renaissance. The North Africans and the Muslims inspired the architecture of the city. Venice is vastly populated with many different ethnicities, which leads to conflict and tension within the city, as is seen between the Christian Antonio, and the Jewish Shylock. The economy of the city is very dependent on shipping in the area, as Venice is a major port city. While Venice is an enormously populated economic hub, Belmont is completely the opposite of Venice.

Belmont, an imaginary city made up by Shakespeare, is a quiet and peaceful setting. Belmont means "Beautiful Mountain", and the relevance of that name is seen with the interaction between characters of the story while they are in Belmont. In Belmont, all the worries of the outside world are forgotten. There is a scarce population in Belmont, and it has come to be intended as a place for lovers. The words and actions expressed in these two split settings allow the reader to see how Venice is a place of danger and Belmont is a retreat for lovers.

Venice is portrayed as an area of destruction, hatred, and violence. The words and actions in Venice are typically spoken by men who are in search of money and riches. Destruction in Venice is seen when one of Antonio's trading ships is destroyed during its voyage, "I reasoned with a Frenchman yesterday, Who told me, in the Narrow Seas the part, The French and English, there miscarried, A vessel of our country richly fraught. I thought upon Antonio when he told me" (II, viii, Line ). Hatred is observed in Venice after Shylock's daughter steals some of his riches, and then proceeds to run off and marry a Christian. "Stolen by my daughter! Justice! Find the Girl!" (II, viii, Line ) and "My own flesh and blood to rebel!" (II, viii, Line 4). Violence is seen when Antonio is unable to pay off his debt to Shylock and he is forced to give up one pound of his flesh to Shylock, "You must prepare your bosom for his knife" (IV, I, Line 55) and "A pound of flesh to be by him cut off" (IV, I, Line 41). While Venice symbolizes death and destruction, Belmont is seen in a completely different light.

Belmont is portrayed as a peaceful sanctuary where peace thrives. The words and actions in Belmont are usually spoken by women full of beauty and virtue. Belmont is seen as a haven for lovers when several men travel there to woo Portia into marrying them, "And with an unthrift loved did run from Venice, as far as Belmont" (V, I, Line 0). Belmont also serves as a place of peace for the lovers, as is seen when Portia's family prepares a feast in honor or Bassanio picking the right chest, "Our feast shall be much honored in your marriage" (III, ii, Line 17). Belmont is portrayed as a place where people go to confess their feelings as well. This is seen when Portia tells her suitors to confess their love for her, "Confess and love" (III, ii, Line 7). Belmont is shown to be a haven of safety and peace to those that come to Belmont.

The two split settings that Shakespeare uses in "The Merchant of Venice" helps him to convey his message more effectively by building two plots in two settings adding to the tension and suspense. While Venice is the place of destruction, Belmont is the retreat for lovers. The fact that these two places are almost complete opposites of each other also adds to the suspense, and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next.

There was once a king, a great and mighty warrior named Genghis Khan. When he led his armies out to war, he conquered many lands, so many that his empire sprawled from eastern Europe to the Sea of Japan.

One day, the king rode out into the woods to hunt. With him went his favorite hawk. The hawk would fly about in the air, circling. When the hawk's sharp eyes spotted some prey from the air, the bird would immediately scoop down for the attack.

It was a warm day, and by afternoon the king was hot and thirst. He started searching for a spring of water he had once seen in the woods. Finally he spotted a trickle of water dripping down the side of a rock, and he knew the spring must be above.

The water fell from the rock slowly, drop by drop. It was not much, but it was water, and the king was very thirsty. So the mighty Khan took out a small silver cup and held it under the dripping water. Ever so slowly, the cup began to fill.

Write my Essay on The hawk and the King for me

The king could hardly wait to feel the cool liquid wet his dry lips and tongue and throat. So, even before the little cup was quite full, Khan pulled it out from under the trickle of water and lifted it toward his lips. Suddenly, something swooped through the air and knocked the cup from the king's hand, spilling the precious water on the ground.

Startled, Genghis Khan looked up to see his pet hawk, flying from tree to tree and looking rather proud of himself. The king glared at the hawk, picked up the cup and began again to slowly fill the cup. This time, he let the cup fill only halfway before he lifted it to his mouth. The cup was just about to touch his lips he could almost taste the water when again the hawk swooped down from the air and knocked it from the king's hand.

By now, Khan was quite angry with his hawk. A third time he collected water in his cup and a third time the hawk kept him from drinking it.

The king turned red in the face from anger. He paced back and forth, glaring at his hawk which was perched on a nearby branch. In his fiercest voice, the mighty Genghis Khan bellowed, "How dare you spill my water!" He bent down to retrieve his cup and then said in a quite, but still furious voice, "If I could catch you, I would break your neck."

The mighty Genghis Khan bent to fill his cup again. But this time, the king drew his sword from the sheath at his side. "If you knock this cup from my hand again, hawk," the king said to his pet, "it will be the last thing you ever do!"

Sure enough, as the king brought the cup to his mouth, the hawk swooped down and knocked it out of his hand. But this time as the hawk passed, the king raised his sword, and with a well-timed flick of his blade, struck the bird in mid-flight. The hawk fell at the king's feet. With imploring eyes fixed on the king's face, it bled to death.

"It's what you deserve," said the king and stepped over the bird to find his silver cup. But the cup had fallen between two rocks and, try as he might, the king could not reach it.

"Well, then," thought the king, "I will follow this trickle of water up to the spring from which it comes. I still need something to drink."

So Genghis Khan began to climb and as he climbed, he became thirstier and thirstier. Finally, he found the pool of water. The king strode eagerly toward the pool, but at the water's edge he gasped and took a quick step back. Lying in the pool was a huge, dead, snake a snake whose venom would kill a man with the slightest taste.

The king stood very still. He was no longer thirsty. All he could think about was the dead hawk lying on the ground below.

"That bird saved my life," he said. "That bird was a true friend, and I have killed him."

The king went back down the hill, half running, half sliding. When he reached the bottom, he carefully picked up the dead hawk and gently placed it in his hunting bag. Then he rode slowly home.

When I was five years old, my great-grandmother suffered from her fourth stroke. Since my parents consistently worked to support our family, I spent much of my youth with my grandparents and great-grandparents. For the rest of my life, I will never forget the time I spent with my great-grandmother, Theresa. After her last stroke I remember standing near her bedside and holding a pan under her chin as she suffered from illness. As she lay in her bed, I held her hand and prayed with her until she passed away. Since I was a child, I have been compelled to aid those in need. My compassionate spirit and inner strength inspire me to serve and extend my heart to others.

As I have grown older, my dedication and passion for others continues to shine through. I feel blessed because my mother is both my inspiration and my role model. She is a pediatric nurse who dedicates her life to helping sick children and their families. She often allows me to accompany her to the hospital and assist on her unit. Through these visits, my enthusiasm for nursing grew. One visit particularly stands out in my memory. I remember watching my mother rock a sick baby, suffering from RSV, to calm her cries. This event fostered my compassion to great levels because my mother was able to calm the baby and make her smile. As I watched my mother soothe this baby, I began to envision myself following in her footsteps. After that day, I knew that my true calling was nursing and I became determined to pursue my dream.

Since I take pleasure in assisting others, I have recently volunteered at a nursing home. On my very first day, I realized what an incredible experience it is to help the elderly. I was fortunate enough to have personal interaction with the residents because I assisted in the activity department. I led them in rosary, directed their exercise, called off bingo numbers, wheeled individuals around, assisted them in the bathroom, and talked personally with many people. One resident particularly touched my heart. Each time I visited the nursing home Virginia made me feel like I made a difference in her life. Many of the residents were not willing to open up to me, but Virginia shared many stories about her life with me. In addition to completing the tasks assigned to me by the coordinator, I also acquired knowledge far more rewarding through the interactions with the residents. Through this experience I learned the true value of responsibility and patience. The experience was truly gratifying because I was able to put smiles on the residents faces and become acquainted with them at a profound level. Since I found great pleasure in serving my community, I continue to visit the residents for their own and my own contentment and satisfaction.

Over the past eighteen years of my life, I have grown and developed intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. Not only do I dedicate time to learning at school, I also attempt to understand and improve my persona on a daily basis. I believe that nursing is intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally stimulating. My sister just graduated from Loyola and speaks highly of the school because she believes that the school fostered both her intellect and spirit. I chose Loyola for this reason. Learning is more than just acquiring mathematical and scientific knowledge. To me, true knowledge requires an understanding of interactions with others. Therefore, I believe nursing is my true calling because it requires more than sheer brains. Nursing calls for compassion and dedication to the service of others.

Buy cheap Nursing term paper

Loyolas motto of knowledge in the service of others perfectly corresponds with my ambition in life. When I was a young child, I discovered the gratification of assisting others while supporting them in moments of despair. Throughout my life, I have dedicated time and heart to continue along this path. As I continue to grow at Loyola, I look forward to develop the skills that will help me serve others in the face of sickness.

Bittersweet Steps in the Right Direction

"Down and out", "washed up", "down on your luck", and "in a slump" are all phrases that describe each of us at some point in our lives. Poor decisions bring about countless outcomes depending on the situation. Lack of studying may result in failure in school; the decision to smoke will result in declining health, and so on. Similarly, poor financial decisions can lead to the terrifying road of homelessness. An optimistic point of view would tell you that all problems can be resolved with time. A failing student may retake a course, a long time smoker may quit smoking, and a homeless person may get his/her life back on track by taking appropriate steps. Difficult decisions by communities and their leaders must be made to fix this ever-growing problem. But to help those who are "down on their luck" and those who associate with them we must be willing to pay a price. It is not always all the individual's fault either. Barbara Buehler of the NYC Department of Planning stated, "The only reason homelessness exists in a land so rich with natural resources is because a person's need for a home is seen as a means of someone else making profit." Through decisions made we can help our communities while also re-building the lives of those who have difficulties.

According to Homelessness Factfile, "Around one-third of single homeless people have an alcohol problem." This poses two immediate problems, one to the community and the other to the individuals themselves. Public drunkenness can sometimes lead to violence or other crimes, putting the individual and public at risk. The city proposes jail-time and the possibility of a $1,000 fine. Critics may view a monetary penalty as being redundant seeing as how most of the nation's homeless are without money. The lack of money cannot be reason to ignore a citizen's responsibility to take accountability for their actions. If money is not available, service must be provided until their debt is paid off. By doing this, we show that there are no exceptions to the law thus preventing more and more people from doing so.

In a recent debate in Asheville, North Carolina, city Councilwoman Holly Jones stated, "If you're a human being, you need to sleep somewhere and to urinate somewhere. We all know there's a problem downtown, but I want to support an ordinance that ensures that our most basic human needs are taken care of." Communities should be clean and clear of public urination and can do so by providing adequate facilities. If, however, people choose not to use these facilities swift action does need to take place. A community is based on those who working together. Nothing can and should be merely one-sided.

Alcohol, curfews, panhandling, and drugs are all coincide with this city's proposed ordinance to decrease the rate of homelessness. It is not the mere fact of getting rid of the problem, but rather solving the problem. Giving those who aren't as fortunate as the rest of society a way to get out and rejoin the world. This may be a slow and rigorous road to each of the individual homeless we're trying to help but as the great C.S. Lewis stated, "I do not think that all who choose wrong roads perish; but their rescue consists in being put back on the right road. A wrong sum can be put right but only by going back till you find the error and working it afresh from that point, never by simply going on… Time does not heal it." With this ordinance being placed into effect, two outcomes are desired for communities to be healed and also for those individuals who may just be "out on their luck."

One of Sappho's poems that caught my attention the most was Persuasion.

This poem introduces persuasion as Aphrodite's daughter. Aphrodite is most commonly

known as the Goddess of love and desire. She's been known to have many lovers and

The main idea in this poem is "Persuasion, you cheat mortals". Persuasion is

described as a bad thing. A lie that mortals fall for. Sappho refers to it as if it was a

believe things, especially when they are given good reasons to believe. People are very

vulnerable when it comes to love. Aphrodite was known to persuade a lot of men with

her beauty, therefore she is a good example. She's describes as a mother of persuasion.

Someone who gave the true meaning to the word. Maybe because of who the word

persuasion was invented.

Sears.com has three types of intentions that their website tries to provide. The first intention, of course, is to sell their products over the web. Sears has a wide variety of products so a customer can purchase everything from a washing machine to a power saw to even kitchen utencils and clothes all on one website. Sears will ship all items that can be delivered by Airborne or U.S. Mail to your home or workplace. A customer can have their product(s) shipped any physical address within the continental United States. Under a special request, Sears will also ship to Military (APO) Addresses, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sears has a Store Pick-Up option for customers that do not want to pay for shipping charges. Another great thing about the Store Pick-Up option is that a customer does not have to wait for the product to be shipped to their preferred address, rather they can drive to their nearest Sears store and pick up their particular product(s).

The second type of intention of the site is to provide product repairs and home services. If someone needs repairs on major brand appliances, electronics, lawn & garden equipment or heating & cooling systems, a Sears' technician can come directly to their house. The Sears' technicians are trained to service all major brands no matter where they were bought. All one must do is schedule an appointment, which can be done online, for a Sears' technician to come to your house and either repair a product or give a free estimate for home services.

The third, and final, type of intention of the site is to allow users to locate the nearest Sears store or just any Sears store in general. After typing in the zip code, city, and state you are looking for, the website will display all Sears stores within your location. This particular feature is especially handy when using the Store Pick-Up option. One can purchase a product or products online and then use the store locator to find the nearest store to pick it up at.

The Sears website layout makes it very easy to navigate through. Although there really is nothing flashy or dynamic about it, by the layout being basic it makes the site more user-friendly to people who may not know much about the internet. On the homepage it always displays weekly sales specials along with the price and links to each item on sale. The large tabs at the top of the page make it very easy to go straight to whatever type of product one is wanting to buy or view. These large tabs are located on almost any page you visit which makes it very convenient. This allows a user to jump to different departments without returning back to the homepage. Along with the tabs there is a column on the left side with links to each department and even the sectors within each department. At the very top of the homepage, there are links to a customer's "shopping cart", their profile, and the status of their orders. There is also a quick link to customer service and the store locator page. If a user happens to get confused about how to navigate through the website, there is even a link at the bottom of the homepage to a site map which has links to every aspect of the entire website.

In comparison with Walmart.com, Sears' Website is really similar in terms of the layout of the site. They both have the tabs at the top that links to different departments within their stores and both sites also have the column located at the left of the page which links to departments as well as specific types of products within a department. Both sites advertise special sales they are offering and have a store locator but Sears.com has a lot more links on their homepage, which makes it easier and faster to find exactly what you want to view. "Garys House"

On April 4th I attended a production of "Gary's House" by Debra Oswald directed by Carol Wimmer, at Castle Hill Players. This play reflected themes of relationship breakdowns, social economic status and death. A act play about people who don't fit in and desperately trying to. Beginning with an odd couple of Gary and Sue - Anne trying to build a life for each other and their expected baby on a small acreage in a small country town. Their lives however, gradually become more complicated, as Gary's sister turns up to claim her part of the land and Sue Anne becomes fed up.

The character of Gary performed by Mike Stacey was we played. His character was convincing as he was true to the play, the production and the theatrical conditions. Caitlin Wright who played the character of Sue Anne also performed well. However, the casting of someone that young looking was untrue to the play; and by the end of the production I'm sure many members of the audience were holding back from getting up and stuffing a sock in her mouth to end her annoying whining. The relationship between Gary and Sue Anne was portrayed well, and the teamwork between the two was good.

The characters of Christine and Dave played by Leonie Bringolf and Stephen Snars were weak they had trouble fitting into the characters personality although that may have been a poor interpretation. They performed poorly even for amateur actors but the characters were badly casted, Dave in particular, was too old for his character and a little too seedy. Christine was constantly fiddling with her costume; this took away from her characters high self-esteem and confidence. The relationship between these two was basically the only thing slightly convincing; although they were still a little uncomfortable. Vince was played particularly well, adding humour to the production. His character was brought on a little bit stronger than the written one but he added variety to the casting.

Climaxes were achieved fairly weakly to the point that some climaxes could have been overlooked as just another moment, but most reactions and emotions were fairly true. The actors strongly brought on the "Outback Australian" feel with their attitude, colloquial language and movement, which was also faithful to Debra Oswald's play, although the actual acting on a whole was fairly amateur, but that was not to be unexpected.

The director interpreted and directed "Gary's House" quite literally, by the book and I liked the concept of the play a lot. The director's choice to involve Gary at the end was quite effective and worked well. The baby was also handled well and was portrayed quite convincingly as a real child. Although the choice to use and light a real cigarette was a poor one, in such an enclosed space the smell became quite offensive and uncomfortable, it would probably been a better decision to use it as purely just a prop. Apart from that the play was unified and ran smoothly.

The design of the production was probably the best feature of the night. Carol and husband/set designer Steve Wimmer worked the set idea of the building of the house quite well into the production gradually building up the house was a good way to signify the gradual building of relationships. The lighting was fairly simple and just a general well-lit stage was the main format. The red glow was particularly effective to portray the gloom and dinginess of the local pub. As were the sound effects, the birdcalls and Ute worked well to improve the feel of the production, the child's cries however were a little loud making it not only annoying but also unrealistic. The costumes worked well with the period of the play along with the characters; the general country town fashions was obvious in all characters, or in Christine's case the hard ass city girl. Christine's costume should have been better fitted to stop her from fiddling and looking like a bit of a frump.

The audience reacted well to the play and its emotions and seemed to be enjoyed over all by the regular viewer. However I felt the play was done quite poorly for an amateur production which I really quite poor.

The first time I was onstage, I had terrible stage fright. It was a high school production, and even though I didnt have a leading role, I had a pretty big part. I was in about 6 scenes, and had a decent amount of lines. Up until the night of the play, I had told myself that I wasnt going to be scared, that I didnt have stage fright. Opening night, it all changed.

We stood backstage, in costume and makeup, and I dared to peak from the side of the stage out at the huge auditorium. It was packed. My heart almost leaped into my throat. I automatically forgot all my lines, all the blocking, and all the choreography. We went out into the hallway where my director had organized a prayer circle. As has I have experienced, prayer circles always end up in tears, which end up in the makeup people frantically running around reapllying mascara and foundation.

The prayer circle was a huge sorce of inspiration for me. All the actors and tech crew gathered together to pray and give last minute speeches/encouragment. I happened to be standing next to my best friend. She was such a sorce of encouragment. Her hug got me throught the show. It was all a blur, but it happened, and we all did great.

Ive learned that stage fright can be cured by trust, practice, and a hug from a friend.

NURSING 1

( STANDARD PRECAUTIONS)

Today I would like to discuss a subject, which is very relevant to Nursing; we have been introduced to this subject very briefly in our practical sessions.

The journal, which we will present, is on Standard Precautions.

The article is a Nursing Standard article which is owned by nurses for nurses. The article was published in May 17.

I will now give you some brief history on the subject.

Universal blood and body fluid precautions (Universal Precautions) were originally devised by the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in 185. In response to an urgent need to protect hospital personnel from blood borne infections. Emphasis is based on the assumption that all persons are presumed infectious.

In Australia the term Universal Precautions was deemed ambiguous and leading to a false notion that wearing gloves was a substitute for hand washing and that this perception was leading to an increase in the risk of hospital acquired infection.

An Infection Control working party recommended the term "Standard Precautions" as the basic risk minimisation strategy and "Additional Precautions" where Standard Precautions may be insufficient.

OVERHEAD No 1 (Definitions)

"Standard Precautions" describes the minimum requirements in work practices to promote infection control.

They include good hygiene particularly washing and drying of hands before and after patient contact, and the use of protective barriers, which may include gloves, gowns or aprons, masks, eye shields or goggles.

Appropriate handling of sharps and other contaminated or infectious waste.

"Additional Precautions" have also been adopted when standard precautions may be insufficient to prevent transmission of infection.

Health care workers who come into contact with patient's blood and body fluids may be exposed to an occupational risk from blood borne and viral infections such as HIV and Hepatitis B & C.

The most likely form of transmission of these viruses to nurses is by direct contact of infected blood by a sharps injury or by blood splashing onto broken skin or mucous membranes such as the lining of the mouth.

As a matter of good practice nursing staff should use appropriate barrier methods, which will prevent the contamination by blood and body fluids.

OVERHEAD No (Standard Precautions Apply To)

1 Blood

All body secretions and excretions, except sweat regardless of whether they contain blood.

Non Intact skin.

4 Mucous membranes such as the lining of the mouth.

OVERHEAD No (Standard Precautions promote the use of

Personal protective equipment)

(GLOVES) Gloves prevent the transmission of pathogens by direct and indirect contact.

Nurses apply gloves when there is a risk of handling infected material.

In most cases single use gloves can be worn.

After coming into contact with any infected material, the nurse should change gloves if the client care is not completed.

Gloves must be removed and hands washed between patient care.

(APRONS/ GOWNS) The primary reason for gowning is to prevent soiling of clothing during contact with the patient.

Gowns protect nurses from coming into contact with infected material.

Gowns or aprons prevent cross contamination in instances such as changing a dressing for a wound, which has purulent discharge.

The gown or apron should be long enough to cover all outer garments.

(MASKS/ FACE PROTECTION) Masks or masks with face shields should be worn when splashing or spraying of blood or body fluid into the face is anticipated.

A properly applied mask fits snugly over the mouth and nose so that pathogens and body fluids cannot enter or escape through the sides.

(CONCLUSION)

In concluding!

Everyday every shift nursing staff practice Standard Precautions,

most of the time without even thinking about it, the article is very relevant to the work, which we will soon be performing.

The strengths of the article were that it was clear and precise, it didn't get lost in terminology and jargon.

The only weakness is that the article is titled Universal Precautions which is now outdated.

The article was informative without being to technical.

Character Analysis

The novel, The House in Paris by Elizabeth Bowen contains the discovery and a better understanding of one's own identity through life experiences, relationships, time and many other elements incorporated in our own environment. The story is presented through different viewpoints. Yet, one viewpoint is through the innocent insight of a child's eye in relationship towards its surroundings. The child is in search of his unknown parents, and the parents are in search of their unknown child. With relevance to the plot and different points of view, the reader is able to get a sense of Leopold's character.

Thus within the first part of the novel, "The Present", as Leopold seems to be attempting to define, or assert, his own identity he is brought to this Anglo-French house in Paris. He is portrayed, in the beginning, as a seemingly arrogant and egotistical person acting like a prince who has an "impersonal air of a royal child." However, it seemed that through his search of identity as he was brought up by his adopted parents, Leopold was "over-understood" throughout the course of time. For,

"The repercussions of all that he said and did echoed through the hollow rooms of the villa, and he knew too well these people found him remarkable. The chosen childish children with whom he played made a crook of him, and all the time he impressed them...Where he came from, kindness thickened the air and sentiment fattened on the mystery of his birth."

Kindness by the adults towards Leopold "thickened the air" as his childhood had been shaped mainly through grown-ups. Adults around him always felt the need to protect him, as if he was in a "bubble", from any outside harm. They treated him like he was very fragile and delicate to possibly "crack" and break. Ignorant of his nature and needs, Leopold's situation is emphasized even more once he reads the letters from his adopted parents. This presents the theory of past wounds and the result of them scarring over. In other words, even though one has a wound the only possible remedy is to ease the pain of the wound. The scar will still be there as a remembrance of the past. Nevertheless, it appears that the adults around Leopold are trying to only ease his pain from his past memories.

Consequently, even though Leopold needs to grow through the continuity of time from the past to the present to the future, he realizes he has been growing in a "fairy-tale". In which, all the apparent attempts by the adults around him is not only to protect him from painful memories of his past but also to keep the details of his past a secret as much as possible. Therefore, Leopold's unawareness of his past makes him feel like he doesn't exist because he basically has no history. Hence, he believes he was named "Grant Moody" because "no on knows I'm born." Especially, since he was adopted it makes him probably feel like less of a person. Also, from the non-appearance of his mother, which was referred to by Naomi as a "change," Leopold once again feels that everything around him feels "unnatural" and "unreal" because Leopold's account of his origins seemed to be coming from an "imaginary mother, like a work of art." At the same time, the author describes the mother as being

"The mother who did not come to meet Leopold…remained his creature, able to speak the truth…He did not have to hear out with grave discriminating intelligence that grown-up falsified view of what had been once that she…might have given him. She, in the flesh, could have offered him only that in reply to the questions…'Why am I? What made me be?'"

To poor little Leopold it seemed that such a meeting as this would have only been possible in a "fairy-tale"; in a perfect little world like "Heaven." Nonetheless, it is only in the end by Ray Forrestier, his father, that Leopold is truly able to move on through time and define his identity in action.

Physical Education in the Classes

Regular physical activity is associated with a healthier, longer life style, and with a lower` risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and most of all obesity. Despite all the benefits of physical activity, most school-aged children in this country are inactive. Lack of physical activity has also contributed to a sharp increase in childhood obesity in the last decade. Given the fact that regular physical activity will help younger people stay healthier, and is an essential component of childhood development, it is important that this be included as part of the regular school curriculum.

There are too many variables in human life to ever be able to conclude that physical activity improves academic performance. However, we can with complete certainty say that regular physical activity will help reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes and will help you to live a healthy and happy life. Physical education is an important aspect of any school students' curriculum. A daily well programmed and appropriately monitored physical activity, can help students to increase their self-steam, develop the knowledge, attitude, discipline, and confidence needed to maintain active lifestyles and acquire the skills needed to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity that will last a lifetime.

Recently there has been significant pressure on school authorities from the local government to show increased achievement of recently established standards in academic areas specially reading and math. As provinces develop standardized tests to hold schools and students accountable, subject that is not tested becomes low in priority. Therefore, there has to be a federal law and regulation stating that standardized physical education be part of the regular school curriculum and find schools and students accountable for achieving the standards and like any other subject students must obtain satisfactory mark in order to go to the next grade. However, this should not just be limited to elementary or high school students. All colleges and universities should include physical education (activity) as part of their regular study program and every semester a four or five credit course be taken by the student. Since such course does not require any further preparation could easily be scheduled in the student's time table.

Help with essay on Physical education in the class

Physical education if often given a secondary place in the educational services of our schools, but we all know that it is an essential component of childhood development and should help build a solid foundation for a healthy adult life. By eliminating physical education from the school, when student becomes an adult could experience obesity, or other health problems. It is very important to have an active life style at younger age, so it becomes secondary in nature.

Quality, daily physical activity for all school age children is of crucial importance and is, in part, the responsibility of school. Physical education is particularly important at this time of growing concern about the reduced levels of physical activity and increased levels of obesity, diabetes and related health problems for all age groups. Achieving optimal health is closely linked to success in all life domains, and a comprehensive education that addresses mental, emotional and physical element is essential. Physical education is a key component of such an education.

With the objective in mind that 'physically active, healthy kids learn better' all school students should have a minimum 0-60 minutes of moderate activity everyday. To achieve that, all schools across the country must fit the physical education program into the school curriculum and make it an essential part of the educational system and students are required to pass the course in order to graduate. All provinces set minimum standards of achievement in physical education. Meeting established standards in physical education be requirement for graduation

The Great Gatsby Success

F. Scott Fitzgerald's detailed descriptions of the landscapes in The Great Gatsby, which use several rhetorical devices, emphasize the theme of success. The rhetorical devices reveal more about this theme as they add style, clarity, and effectiveness to the writing. Both the ideas of being successful as well as unsuccessful are conveyed by Fitzgerald through the different landscapes. The description of Louisville, Gatsby's mansion, and Gatsby's funeral highlight the success that Gatsby achieved.

Fitzgerald's description of Gatsby and Daisy in Louisville show Gatsby's success early in his life. Fitzgerald describes Gatsby's fascination with Daisy in this Louisville setting through effective diction and imagery. The imagery used in the description Daisy's mansion provides the reader with a better idea of what he wanted in his life. The mansion amazed Gatsby with its "ripe mystery about it, a hint of bedrooms upstairs more beautiful and cool than other bedrooms…and redolent of this years shining motor cars." (155). This mansion symbolized the wealth Gatsby wanted in life. Fitzgerald also describes Daisy as being "excitingly desirable," (155) to Gatsby. The words "excitingly desirable" show the priority Gatsby placed on being with Daisy. Gatsby first kisses Daisy on a moonlit evening in Louisville before the war. This kiss signified Gatsby's accomplishment of his goals early in his life. During their time in Louisville, Gatsby and Daisy became very much in love, she "brushed silent lips against his coat's shoulder," (158) and he "touched the end of her fingers, gently, as though she were asleep." (158). The imagery adds feeling to the writing and this helps to emphasize the theme of Gatsby's success in this part of the novel.

Fitzgerald describes Gatsby's mansion more thoroughly than any other setting in the book. The mansion symbolized both the success in Gatsby's life as well as the success he did not achieve. Fitzgerald uses imagery, diction, and figurative language to describe this setting. Imagery is used to describe Gatsby's parties where "men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars." (4). This popularity portrays Gatsby as a successful person. There is more imagery when Fitzgerald describes the inside of Gatsby's mansion, which has "period bedrooms swathed in rose and lavender silk poolrooms…and a toilet set of pure dull gold." (6). The detailed portrayal of Gatsby's home show his success from a materialistic point of view. While his mansion seems to represent the great success he achieved, Gatsby's mansion is later described as a "huge incoherent failure of a house." (188). The words "huge incoherent failure" used together emphasize the idea that Gatsby was actually not successful. Also, Fitzgerald writes that one guest did not realize the "party was over," (188) and this metaphor contributes to the idea that Gatsby's extravagant life was just a cover for his unsuccessful life. The description of this setting is used to show that Gatsby could be perceived as successful in some ways, but unsuccessful in other areas of his life.

The description of Gatsby's funeral marks the final idea of Gatsby not achieving success in his life. Fitzgerald uses strong imagery and a depressed tone to describe this setting. The funeral is a pitiful affair that occurs on a gloomy, rainy day. Only a few of Gatsby's servants, Nick, Gatsby's father, and the man from Gatsby's library show up. There was a "sad procession of cars," (18) on the way to his burial led by a "motor hearse, horribly black and wet." (18). This setting sums up Gatsby's life, which turned out to be quite unsuccessful.

The settings that are emphasized by Fitzgerald add to the theme of success through detailed descriptions and the language and words used. The descriptive writing makes each setting impact the theme greatly. Gatsby looked successful on the outside, but he died without achieving happiness and the settings help to convey the this theme to the reader.

American Jet Industries is a company that deals with sales of airplanes and aircraft parts. Many people have assumed that the atmosphere within the company is that of a slow passed, peaceful, High technology working facility; however, this is a misconception that many people have when they are not introduced to the industry correctly.

The aircraft industry is a fast paced industry, where it requires, not only the sales persons' full attention, but also the use of all its talents and abilities to get the sale and complete the transactions.

Competition is so high in the industry that, if the sales person waits a couple of hours to make a decision of whether to purchase material to supply the airline or not, the material could have been sold and taken out of the market by another competitor. Depending on the aircraft that needs the material, the material could be so scares, that if there is any surplus in the market, it could get sold/purchased before anyone else has the opportunity to contemplate the purchase. One example of this is that of today. Our company went to locate that a customer in Europe needed. When we accessed the system to try to locate the item, we found that only one company had that part in their inventory. When we went to allocate the material, the vendor advised us that the material had been sold and shipped to a competitor. Unfortunately, since our company waited two hours to begin its allocation, the competition located and purchased the material. The good thing about this is that the material sold was being offered at a higher price than that of the manufacturer, so we contacted the manufacturer and were able to allocate the only one they had for a cheaper price.

The culture of the company is also an interesting point to introduce. Within the company, there is a competitive, stressful, relaxing, understanding, and complex culture. As stated previously, the company strives to be a top competitive in the industry. This produces a competitive atmosphere that creates much stress and anger within the teams. On the other hand, in other departments, such as the accounting department and the quality control department of the company, seems to be a relaxing atmosphere. Their jobs do not have to deal with sales and reaching sales goals. Therefore, their only concern is to make sure that the money comes in from the customers and that the material is in good shape. If that is not happening, they hand the problem to the sales manager for control and resolution.

The last observation is that of the technology of the company. Many people have had an impression that a small computer and a fax machine is the only thing needed to be able to accomplish sales. While that theory is correct, other points need to be considered when thinking about this. Some points to consider are those of the airline needs and standards. 0% of the airlines require the company to have certain programs where it facilitates requests and orders for them. So, if the company did not have those programs that require state of the art technology, they would not be able to receive requests and orders. American Jet Industries has spent thousands of dollars to obtain the necessary equipment to be able to comply with the airlines' needs and be able to compete at a high level with the best. One of those programs is that of Quantum Controls. That program is capable of researching the market and locating material needed. It is also capable of receiving messages via email and fax and also able to send emails and faxes without the need to purchase any additional software or hardware. Most airlines use this system to access their vendors and send requests to them and also to receive answers and send orders to their vendors.

In other words, American Jet Industries must be able to show the airlines that it is able to meet any of their requirements to get business from them. Whether it is meeting their quality control standards, their accounting needs or procurement needs, American Jet Industries is able to show its customers that it is a serious competitor and comply with their needs

Ethics Statement

While working for Allstate Insurance Company in the Accounting Department for over 18 years, I have gone through some Strategic and Social Challenges. The Code of Ethics Policy applies to every Allstate employee including the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Office, Controller, other senior financial and executive officers, and to Allstate's outside directors, and references in this Code to 'you,' 'we,' and 'employees' are intended to include them.

While interviewing my department manager, Eric Mell he shared some very valuable information that was very interesting to me. Allstate's Code of Ethics; "Allstate is committed to operating its business with honesty, integrity and the highest level of ethical conduct. These values are absolute. We must treat every customer, fellow employee, and member of the public accordingly. (Interview, May 00)"

Independent judgment is critical to the performance of your job. To maintain independence, you should avoid any other employment, business dealings or other relationships or activities that could impair independent thinking and judgment.

I believe the purpose of the ethics statement is to demonstrate how Allstate is committed to provide a work environment that is safe and free from discrimination and harassment that may effect an employee's terms or conditions of employment. Allstate has many valuable assets, including its people, property, information, and reputation. It is the company's duty as well as the employee's to preserve and protect these assets, and to use them only in ways, which promote the best interests of the Company.

In today's rapidly changing environment, Allstate's Code of Ethics has changed to keep up with today and tomorrow's business requirements. Allstate is in the business that is built on trust. Any violations of the trust would affect their image and their ability to do business. Allstate's ethical standard reflects each individual and corporate commitment of how our long-term success and our ability to succeed in the marketplace as a great company is determined by how each leader and employee conducts relationships. Allstate encourages employees to volunteer in the community demonstrating that Allstate and its employees are valued citizens of the community.

We as employees are expected to act honestly and deal fairly and ethically in all of the Company's business relationships, whether with its customers, suppliers, competitors or other employees. Allstate's reputation for honesty and integrity must never be subject to question. As one of Allstate's core values, integrity must be part of all business goals and activities, such as developing new customer relationships, creating shareholder value, and enhancing employee relationships.

If no one observed the ethical guidelines this would be a violations of our Code of Ethics, which could result in discipline up to and including termination of employment or referral for criminal prosecution. Allstate will seek prosecutions of criminal acts perpetrated against the company by any officer, employee, or other person. Compliance with this Code and all applicable laws and regulations, both foreign and domestic, is required of all individuals covered by the Code. This is very important to our corporate image and strategies. The Company maintains a number of policies that are designed to assist employees in complying with applicable law in the conduct of Allstate's business.

In addition, if the company has no Code of Ethics policy, this could result in lawsuit toward the company and eventually, cause the company's downfall.

Each year Allstate e-mails each employee a copy of the Code of Ethics, called the Annual Compliance Confirmation. This includes Conflict of Interest, Integrity, Asset Protection and General Provisions. As employees, we must read and sign off under each category stating that we are in compliance with the company's Code of Ethics. Failure to complete the Annual Compliance Confirmation may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. One way I feel this could improve is to send one section at a time, this will give the employee the opportunity to take their time and read without feeling rushed into agreement.

1. Name and define the three basic principles of development.

People develop at different rates. In your own classroom, you will have a whole range of examples of different developmental rates. Some students will be larger, better coordinated, or more mature in their thinking and social relationships. Others will be much slower to mature in those areas. Except in rare cases of very rapid or very slow development, such differences are normal and to be expected in any large group of students. Development is relatively orderly. People develop certain abilities before others. In infancy they sit before they walk, babble before they talk, and see the world through their own eyes before they can imagine how others see it. In school, they will master addition before algebra, Bambi before Shakespeare, and so on. Theorists may disagree on exactly what comes before what, but they all seem to find a relatively logical progression. Development takes place gradually. Very rarely do changes appear over night. A student who cannot manipulate a pencil or answer a hypothetical question may well develop this ability, but the change is likely to take time.

. How would you, as a classroom teacher, define the different aspects of human development? Or how would you as a psychologist, define the different aspects of human development?

As a classroom teacher, I would define the different aspects of human development as its most general psychological sense refers to certain changes that occur in human beings between conception and death. The term is not applied to all changes, but rather to those that appear in orderly ways and remain for a reasonably long period of time. A temporary change caused by a brief illness, for example, is not considered a part of development. Psychologists also make a value judgment in determining which changes qualify as development. The changes, at least those that occur early in life, are generally assumed to be for the better and to result in behavior that is more adaptive, more organized, more effective, and more complex.

. What is lateralization and what is myelination and why is understanding these terms important?

Lateralization is the specialization of the two hemispheres of the brain cortex. Myelination is the process by which neural fibers are coated with a fatty sheath called myelin that makes message transfer more efficient. Understanding these terms is important because it helps one to understand the development of the brain and how a person develops.

4. How does Piaget define assimilation, accommodation, equilibration, and schemes?

Assimilation is fitting new information into existing schemes. Accommodation is the altering existing schemes or creating new ones in response to new information. Equilibration is the search for mental balance between cognitive schemes and information from the environment. Schemes is the mental systems or categories of perception and experience.

5. Clearly name and define Piaget's four stages of cognitive development.

Sensorimotor-ages 0- years. The characteristics are they begin to make use of imitation, memory, and thought. Begins to recognize that objects do not cease to exist when they are hidden. Moves from reflex actions to goal-directed activity. The second stage is Preoperational stage. The age range is -7 years. The characteristics are gradually develops use of language and ability to think in symbolic form. Able to think operations through logically in one direction. Has difficulties seeing another person's point of view. The third stage is the concrete operational. The age range is 7-11 years. The characteristics are able to solve concrete problems in logical fashion. Understands laws of conservation and is able to classify and seriate. Understands reversibility. The fourth and final stage is the formal operational. The age range is 11-adult. The characteristics are they are able to solve problems in logical fashion. Become more scientific in thinking. Develops concerns about social issues, identity.

6. Who is the most egocentric a four year old or an adolescent? Why?

7. What are some of the criticisms of Piaget's developmental theory?

Piaget taught us that children do not like children do not think like adults. His influence on developmental psychology and education has been enormous, even though recent research has not supported all his ideas. Although most psychologists agree

Torpedoes In the Atlantic

The disaster

During the early months of the Second World there was fear of German bombers would bomb the cities; causing casualties and deaths among which would be children. To make sure the children were safe, the government decided it would be a good idea to send the children across to the countryside of Canada. Bess Walder was one of the children on board. They all boarded a very luxurious ship- The City Of Benares, to go to Canada, it was great and they felt in complete safety when a German torpedo hit their ship. The nightmare had begun, when the ship started to go down. Children were thrown into the lifeboats of which some missed the lifeboats and fell into the sea.

The ones that were lucky enough to land in the lifeboats were so crowded by other children (including Beth) that the lifeboat turned upside-down and when many drifted away or drowned, Bess and another girl- Beth Cummings held on to the boat.

The great tale of courage

Bess and Beth were two of the few children that had survived and they weren't planning on giving up either- in the freezing cold water they still hung on to the up-turned lifeboat with everything they could. They kept each other living, but Bess was thinking about her brother; she thought he must of got lost and died when they were being thrown into the boats- she thought he might have been one of the man that missed, while Beth was thinking of her mother. Bess was upset by this thought, but could only think of her-self now, and staying alive just praying that a ship would come for their rescue.

They were determined to survive even though the water was freezing, it was dark and logic told them that no-one would find them in this massive sea, but they held on to that little bit of hope they had left to keep them going and especially when everyone around them just seemed to give up and let go. They tried not to say anything unless it had to be said and just put all their energy on holding on.

When morning came- there were only four people left that they could see Bess, Beth and Indian sailors (one of which they soon realised was dead), all of which must have had great strength and determination to get through the night! But they were both near death and still they were determined that they were going to get saved and survive.

They were almost giving up, when Bess noticed a small object in the distance, which got bigger as it came towards them- they had been saved! Almost nights of sheer determination and surviving and they were saved freezing cold and half-dead.

The question- is it a disaster/depressing story or is it an uplifting story

After a long thought, I couldn't decide which of the it was, because on the one hand; lots of children have died which is a complete tragedy. The whole thing is made worse by the way that the children were meant to be taken away from danger and put into guaranteed safety, and in total out of 406 people on the ship, a tragic 56 people died, which included 77 of the 0 child evacuees! There is nothing else to say about those deaths its tragic.

Even though the deaths were a disaster, there is still an uplifting story of happiness brought through courage and determination from Bess and Bess. This story about them keeping going, holding on and thinking of not only themselves, but the effect it would have on their loved ones if they died and why they had to make sure they didn't die the whole story about them almost makes you forget that so many people died.

Conclusion

In conclusion to this whole story, I would have to say that even though the story of Bess and Beth had a happy ending and was a very uplifting story, I still think that no matter how amazing it was I could not make up for all the losses of children and adults in this tragedy. But I did think that the story of Bess and Beth did make me feel a lot better about the disaster part of it, because if they had not hung on and kept going, then there would be two more parents/families that would be left with the loss of their children and complete heart-break.

So, overall I did think that it was a very nice, happy and heroic story, but I also couldn't help just thinking about the other families that lost their children. You do not think about what happens to the other families who lose their children because the focus is on just those two characters as is any normal story (you can't have the focus on too many characters or you lose the story). Conclusively it is a disaster story with a side story of courage and heroicness with a miracle ending.

A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a novel about a boy named Gene Forrester and his trials and tribulations while attending Devon School for Boys in New Hampshire. It is set in the time period of World War ; therefore the book is reminiscent of the war. There are many symbols in the novel that represents aspects of the war and of mankind itself. The three connected symbols in A Separate Peace reinforce the innocence and evil of the main characters, Finny and Gene.

Beside the Devon School flow two rivers on opposite sides of the school, the Naguamsett and the Devon. The Devon provides entertainment and happiness for Gene and Finny as they jump from the tree into the river and hold initiations for the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. Finny, Gene, and their friends use the Devons warm water to play in during the carefree summer session. The Devon brings out Finnys carefree character and personality when he jumps from the limbs of the tree. Not one Upper Middler in Devon has ever jumped from the tree; Finny becomes the first. After surfacing, Finny says that jumping from the tree causes the most fun he has had in weeks (16). However, the Naguamsett and the Devon completely contrast. When Gene and Finny emerge from the Devon, they feel clean and refreshed. However, Gene describes the Naguamsett as ugly, saline, fringed with marsh, mud and seaweed (76). When Gene starts a fight with Quackenbush and falls into the Naguamsett because Quackenbush calls Gene a maimed son-of-a-bitch, Gene surfaces from the Naguamsett feeling grimy, dirty and in desperate need of a bath (80, 86). Much like the clean, refreshing water of the Devon and the ugly saline water of the Naguamsett, Genes carefree attitude of the summer session vastly differs from the angry, confused attitude of the winter session.

Likewise, the two sessions, the summer and winter, give a different sense of feeling toward school and life at Devon School. The summer session allows Finny to use his creativity. Finny invents Blitzball and founds the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. The students let their carefree attitudes flow during the summer. Finny and Gene willingly break the rules to have fun during the summer by skipping class and going to the beach. Finny also wears the school tie as a belt to the traditional term tea. Gene feels that Finny finally won't get away with it, but Finny manages to talk his way out of it easily (7-8). However, the winter session causes a sense of strictness. The sermons now exhort the thought of what we owe Devon, but in the summer the students think of what Devon owes us (7). The masters and class leaders try to enforce continuity, but Gene realizes that resurrecting the summer session becomes impossible. Finny is not in school, no longer shall the students have their carefree attitudes, and the class officials and masters now enforce the rules at Devon. Gene becomes like the winter session by saving a cold blast for the enemy. The winter lives to destroy the warmth of the summer and does so by unleashing an unpredictable frigid blizzard. Likewise, Gene destroys Finny by releasing an uncontrolled jouncing of the tree limb.

Nevertheless, the peaceful time and the wartime clearly display the innocence of Finny and the evil of Gene. During the peaceful time, not one student thinks about a war. Like the summer session, the rules do not exist, and the students minds run wild with carelessness. Finnys imagination and creativity explode during the peaceful time with inventions like Blitzball and the founding of the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. However, the war, like the winter session, brings about confusion and hostility. Students like Leper and Quackenbush begin thinking about enrolling in the army. Even Gene considers enlisting until he realizes that Finny needs him. Finny cannot handle the changes during the winter session. When Gene explains to Finny that a war is occurring, Finny wonders, Is there? (104). Finny refuses to believe in the war when Gene explains that the war comes before sports. Finny comes to the conclusion that old fat men in Washington, D.C. make up the war to trick the people, and only the fat men understand the trick.

Although there are many more symbols in the novel, these three were heavily brought out. They show that mankind has two sides, good and evil. They also show that sometimes mankind cannot control the evil side, and rivalry between friends mostly leads to destruction. The two rivers, the two sessions, and the two settings reinforce and clearly display the innocence of Finny and the evil of Gene.
