From looking at the first chapter of Dickens' novel, Hard Times, it can be seen that the author holds a negative view on the system of education used at the time.

Thomas Gradgrind, the schoolteacher, abruptly introduces the chapter with a monologue, the nature of which reveals him to be devoid of imagination. This is reflected in the constant repetition of his belief that, "Facts alone are wanted in life." This opinion is also aired at the end of the chapter, representing Gradgrind's unchanging nature.

Dickens persuades the reader to dislike Gradgrind, as he dislikes what he represents, by using a number of methods. When Gradgrind rudely refers to educated children as "reasoning animals" this further enforces the reader's immediate dislike for him. The statement also serves to show the lack of individuality that he strives to attain in his classroom as he renders the children to a state free from characteristics. This opinion is repeated when he states that everything apart from facts should be "rooted out", obviously including personal beliefs and thoughts. By referring to Gradgrind impersonally as "the speaker", the reader is also encouraged to feel cold towards him.

The room where the children study is described to be a "plain, bare, monotonous vault", lacking any stimulation for the minds of the children. Through this rhetorical statement, which uses repetition of three to stress the featureless nature of the room, Dickens presents his view that schools at the time were intentionally created as factories whose purpose was to manufacture identical "educated" beings.

Repugnant imagery is used to describe Gradgrind's physically, his forefinger, forehead, coat, legs and shoulders are all described as being "square". By using a mathematical figure to represent the schoolteacher's clothes and body parts, Dickens further demonstrates his monotonous nature, free from creativity. In addition to this, it is stated that Gradgrind's neck cloth is "trained to take him by the throat with an unaccommodating grasp", showing the negative power that he exudes over even something as small as his clothes.

Dickens once again uses repetition in the phrase, "The emphasis was helped by", in reference to Gradgrind's distasteful features. This exposes his authoritarian temperament, as each time that the phrase is repeated four times, a new level of control is totalled.

Dickens employs contrast of imagery to firstly unpleasantly describe Gradgrind's head as being covered with hair "which bristled on the skirts of his bald head", and secondly to liken it to "the crust of a plum pie". This stark distinction exists to expose how unpleasant Gradgrind is.

Lastly, the children in the classroom are referred to in Gradgrind's own view as "little vessels … ready to have imperial gallons of facts poured into them until they were full to the brim." This mathematical, controlled feel which is applied to everything in Gradgrind's classroom shows how Dickens views the education system as a process by which the innocence and imagination of a child is destroyed.

Guy Montag is a thirty-year-old fireman who lives in a small town. Guy Montag is a misguided person. " I'm going to do something," said Montag. "I don't even know what yet, but I'm going to do something big," (65). This is an example of foreshadowing; Montag is planning something that he will do in the future, even though he doesn't know what it is that he is going to do. Montag is always being told what to do and in planning his big moment he feels like he is in charge of himself for the first time.

Along with many other things Montag is Confused. He doesn't know what to do with his life, and he doesn't understand things that are happening in society today. "Jesus God," said Montag. "Every hour so many Damn things in the sky! How in the hell did those bombers get up there every single second of their lives! Why doesn't someone want to talk about it! We've started and won two atomic wars since 10! Is it because we're having so much fun at home we've forgotten the world? Is it because we're so rich and the rest of the world is so poor and we just don't care if they are? I've heard rumors; the world is starving, but we're well fed. Is it true the world works hard and we play? Is that why we're hated so much? I've heard the rumors about hate, too, once in a long while, over the years…" (7-74). Montag is full of questions he asks questions to have a better understanding of things that are going on with himself and with society.

Montag above all other things is unhappy. His wife is never there for him and he doesn't have anyone to talk to. When Montag has a crisis he can't turn to his wife because she'll just make jokes. Mildred doesn't try to comfort Montag in any way, instead she says things like "The keys to the beetle are on the night table. I always like to drive fast when I feel that way. You get it up around ninety-five and you feel wonderful. Sometimes I drive all night and come back and you don't know. It's fun out in the country. You hit rabbits, sometimes you hit dogs. Go take the beetle." (64). His wife doesn't comfort him for anything so he has no choice, but to admit that he is unhappy. "Yes it might be a good idea. Before I hurt someone. Did you hear Beatty? Did you listen to him? He knows all the answers. He's right. Happiness is important. Fun is everything. And yet I kept sitting there saying to myself, I'm not happy, I'm not happy." Montag breaks down and tells the truth. He finally summons up the strength to tell Mildred how he feels. This is a giant step for Montag in his search for happiness.

I can't talk to my wife, she listens to the walls. I just want someone to hear what I have to say. And maybe if I talk long enough, it'll make sense. And I want you to teach me to understand what I read." (8). Montag's quest for doing what he believes is right, is going to start here. Understanding books is his first step towards reaching his goal, which at the moment seems impossible.

Montag's one weakness is that he cannot do things on his own. Throughout the story Montag strives to do things on his own. "I'm not thinking. I'm just doing like I'm told, like always. Research Problem & Method

Our research problem will be on Terrorism. I selected this topic because I wanted to learn more about the why and how of Terrorism. Being from another planet, us aliens would learn to prevent Terrorism on our planet. I have discussed the topic and decided to refine the topic on Why does Terrorism exist?

Our research methods we will be using are the resources from the Internet, the local library, and the UOPHX online library. Research begins with the problem of deciding what we want to know, which variables to use, and how to measure them in a valid and reliable way.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Research Problem & Method

The types of research method that we will we implement are the scientific method, which we will gather and interpret the evidence we find. We will then use variables to compare events and measure any data that we find.

There are three basic tasks to do sociological research. The first task is to describe and identify the question. The second task is to explain what we describe what the question identifies and the third task is to predict what the future will look like if the problem exist. Other research methods we can consider will be in-depth interviews, surveys or secondary analysis of information. This is information already gathered by other researchers. Researching for historical documents will be an additional valuable source of information to support our secondary analysis. This will help us understand social conditions in which people once lived.

We will also use the cross-cultural method of studying different type of societies that are dealing with terrorism. After we collect all this data on terrorism we will interpret the data and discover clues and patterns of why Terrorism exist.

The definition of Terrorism according to Webster-Merriam online defines Terrorism as the threat or use of violence, often against the civilian population, to achieve the political ends.

Terrorism was dated back in the 18th century when the common people of France were against the taxing policies of King Louis the XVI. The common people of France launched a violent rebellion against the King, the Catholic Church, the nobles and anyone who disagreed with the goals of the rebellion. During the first years of the revolution, the government struggled to gain control over the chaos that enveloped France. The government then took matters on their own hands and created the "Reign of Terror". Anyone who criticized the government was declared to be a traitor and will be beheaded on the guillotine. This terror killed about 40,000 people and left people living in terror of being the next victim of the guillotine. This was the first example of government-sponsored terrorism. This showed how violence and the threat of violence could be used to frighten opponents and increase own power.

Modern Terrorism today consists of activities such as assassinations, bombings, random killings, hijackings, skyjackings and biochemical warfare by groups who are weak to mount open assaults. It is also a modern tool of the alienated and its psychological impact on the public increased because of the extensive coverage by the news media.

Governments and nations are trying different types of methods to prevent terrorism. The U.S. government has created a few agencies dedicated to prevent terrorism. One of the agencies The Diplomatic Security Service offers rewards up to $5million dollars leading to the capture of the individuals before they strike.

Terrorism for the future is here to stay and until people finally realize that killing innocent people is not the right thing to do, terrorism may end.

A long time ago I hade a dirt bike. I can remember that I was a good rider. I could go off any jump. Or I can beat anybody in a race.

I was so happy with it. I got it for my birthday. Ever summer I would try to ride it every day.

Until that one spring morning I woke up. None of my gear fit. I grew to big for the bike. So my dad and I took it to his shop with a for sale sign on it. Then somebody and his son pulled up and bought it. And I sang

Custom writing service can write essays on All songs are poetry.

A long, long time ago...

I can still remember

How that dirt bike used to make me smile.

And i knew if i had my chance

That i could make those jumps at last

And, maybe, Id be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver

With every flyer I'd deliver.

Bad news on the doorstep;

I couldnt take one more step.

I cant remember if i cried

When I sold my dirt bike,

But something touched me deep inside

The day my dirt bike sold.

So bye-bye, to my old bike.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

And them good old boys were drinking coke'

Singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Did you write the book of riding,

And do you have faith in god above,

If the bible tells you so?

Do you believe in rock n roll,

Can music save your mortal soul,

and can you teach me how to ride real slow?

Well, i know that youre in love with it,

cause i saw you riding in the gym.

You both kicked off your shoes.

Man, i dig those riding and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin buck

With a blue carnation and a pickup truck,

But i knew i was out of luck

The day the I sold my bike.

I started singin,

bye-bye, to my bike.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Now for five years I've been on our own

And moss grows fat on a rollin stone,

But thats not how it used to be.

When the jester rode for the king and queen,

In a coat he borrowed from James dean

And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,

The jester stole his dirt bike.

The courtroom was adjourned;

No verdict was returned.

And while Lennon read a book on bikes,

The quartet practiced in the park,

And we rode in the dark

The day the I sold my bike.

We were singing,

bye-bye, to my bile.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.

The birds flew off with the bike,

Eight miles high and falling fast.

It landed foul on the grass.

The players tried for a forward pass,

With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume

While the sergeants played a marching tune.

We all got up to dance,

Oh, but we never got the chance!

`cause the players tried to take the field;

The marching band refused to yield.

Do you recall what was revealed

The day the I sold my bike ?

We started singing,

bye-bye, to my old bike.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

Oh, and there we were all in one place,

A generation lost in space

With no bikes left to ride.

So come on jack be nimble, jack be quick!

Jack flash sat on a candlestick

Cause fire is the devils only friend.

Oh, and as i watched him on the new bike

My hands were clenched in fists of rage.

No angel born in hell

Could break that riding spell.

And as the flames climbed high into the night

To light the sacrificial rite,

I saw satan laughing with delight

The day the music died

He was singing,

bye-bye, to my bike and i.

Drove my bike to the lake,

But the lake was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin coke

And singin, thisll be the day that i ride.

thisll be the day that i ride.

My contribution to society.

For several years I have been wondering how the world would be if people lived healthier and longer lives, could take precautions against all forms of diseases, or had access to preventive medicines. This dream is the motivating force behind my future career choice of becoming a pharmacist. I love the science of pharmacy, and the fact that I can help a very large number of people with it. The wide variety within the field, and unlimited options for growth and advancement make it even more flexible and suitable for me. I am particularly interested in pharmaceutical research because this dynamic field would continually challenge and motivate me to improve, since the world of diseases is ever changing, and new treatments must be discovered at a similar pace to optimally sustain human life.

My passion for Pharmacy was ignited at the tender age of twelve, when I lost my first and closest godmother to breast cancer. She had been through several months of treatment in the best French hospitals, and various sessions of chemotherapy to fight the disease. My family invested so much into her health to ensure that she wins the battle, but she got weaker over time as her body succumbed to cancer. She breath her last immediately after our final conversation, in which she told me her dreams and wishes for me. She commended my philanthropic nature, and talent in the sciences, and then gave me her blessings for success in whatever field I choose to study in the future, or decisions I make. My godmother's death has been one of the hardest things for me to deal with in the past few years, leaving a void and pain within me, that I wish no other person would suffer. It motivated me to participate in cancer research, and contribute all I can to save as many people worldwide as possible, in the least painful or expensive way.

Custom Essays on My contribution to society

I have heard people say discouraging things about Pharmacy, but I remain unshaken for the hands-on exposure, and inspiring work experience I acquired in a 'P-fizer' laboratory a few months before enrolling in college, assured me that I was born to do it. I also attended several seminars and spoke to pharmacists at different functions and events, who gave me a deeper insight into the profession.

I would like to contribute to, or be a part of one of those research groups that would discover the cure for cancer, AIDS, or any of the presently incurable diseases. During my career as a pharmacist, I would also like to find solutions to the most delicate health issues, or health related problems affecting people all around the world. This is my strongest interest because I believe it is fundamental to the World's health. I want to achieve efficiency and access, without sacrificing quality. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which is well known for research, and specialized in the sciences, would help me achieve my goal of becoming a pharmacist through the specialize coursework offered as part of its pre-pharmacy program.

The most challenging issues in studying for the profession, that sometimes make my goals seem way out of reach to me, are some of the pre-requisite courses, especially the mathematics courses that I have to take before enrolling in Pharmacy school. I have several times found myself overwhelmed by the level of difficulty of my present calculus course, but the tutors and school counselors get me back on track with their encouraging words of advice, and help. In my moments of weakness, I also tell myself that 'I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me', a Bible verse I was taught by my Christian parents back in Africa, from where I came to acquire an education that could be of great benefit to humanity.

I welcome the challenge of serving the entire human race, and embrace the chance to make a living from doing what I love the most in a respectable job, while participating in such a dynamic and interesting field. Pharmaceutical research is my future career choice, for it provides these priceless offers in the perfect package, and keeps the human heritage everlasting and ever sure.

Comparative Essay

The Great Gatsby / Muriel's Wedding

"They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together…"

This phrase of complement that Nick Carroway expressed to Jay Gatsby towards the end of the novel, deemed to encapsulate the sentiment that is expressed in both written and visual texts of The Great Gatsby and Muriel's Wedding respectively. We observe and can be drawn to even fathom a sense of admiration for both Jay and Muriel, as no matter what problems they are faced with, they seem to hold a sense of dignity about them, which it seems can never be extricated from these fictitious characters.

Write my Essay on Comparative EssayThe Great Gatsby / Muriel's Wedding for me

Possibly the most versatile and differentiating aspects to a film, would be the themes associated with each individual movie, texts etc.

It is rarely that we come across a motion picture or anecdote with such specific similarities as The Great Gatsby and Muriel's Wedding. These two texts as well as visual texts seemed to show holographic alikeness in relation to specific themes and characters. In detail one of the most prominent aspects of the two narrative accounts that can be analysed are the themes associated with apiece.

We observe clearly that both Jay Gatsby and Muriel's Haslop are trying to attest to the social order and more importantly themselves that they can fit in and be equal as society sees fit. Both Jay Gatsby and Muriel Haslop seemed to think of themselves quite moral and unobtrusive people, although when we see the manifestation of their actions we can observe that they are really just basing their morals on personal preferences and more or less whimsical ideals.

In contrast to the similarities of these two visual texts we can see that at the end of Muriel's Wedding, Muriel seems to rectify her problems in regards to trying to fit in to society's fickle opinions and the prospect that she is in effect absolved from any blame that could be placed upon her is readily recognised and excepted. However in the closing scenes of The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is murdered and it seems that all his pain, sorrow and wonton love of Daisy Buchannon is taken with him. This seems to symbolise that the American dream dies, trapped in a quagmire of dreams and superficial fantasies.

An additional facet to the underlying symbolic themes that these two stories contribute to, can be seen when we analyse the significance to Jay Gatsby's death as well as Muriel's mothers, and how these tragedies came to fruition. Jay as well as Muriel's mother seemed to both suffer the same fate, on account of trying to be seen as a somewhat equal to the qualities of which society held them to, in which they irrationally thought they did not possess.

It would seem that all the characters in both The Great Gatsby and Muriel's Wedding were looking for a deeper emotional fulfilment than anyone could confer in them, which left them with little faith in themselves. It was as though they had their own personal opinions of the ideals of relationships in marriages, which were programmed to their immediate satisfaction rather than long termed. The characters seem to hide behind their marriages as imaginary shields to the world's obtrusive view on them.

Primarily the characters are unaware of the damages that they are causing to their close friends and relatives as they commit such selfish acts. And it is until it is to late that they seemed to understand the gravity and how the problem impinged on others emotions and well being. As Muriel is portrayed as an innocent and unknowing young adult, we are also given the aspect that she is very self-centred with decisions vested in her. Alike with Jay Gatsby, he was perhaps the most pristine gentleman of the entire situate of people that surrounded him, but his unforgiving passion and desires for daisy finally overcome his well-mannered personality.

The resemblance in the two visual texts is quite easy to grasps in terms of themes and character analysis as we are faced with the same immoral values and attitudes throughout each. It is as though we can never overcome our instincts and struggles to control our inner desire.

King Lear may be valued within a feminist context in 1st C as a representation of female roles in early times as compared to contemporary society. In the 1st C female insubordination, and assertiveness is a concept, which is slowly celebrated due to increased concentration on equal rights of all. At the end of the play no women are alive, however in today's society women are reaching high positions in fields such as business and politics.

The play could also been see from a family based reading demonstrating the complexities of family dynamics. King Lear is a conflict ridden and possessive father. Goneril and Regan are products of Lear's bullying as shown through animal imagery. The imagery of sea monsters applied to Goneril and Regan by Lear "struck me with her tongue, most serpent-like, upon the very heart" reinforces the idea of Goneril and Regan becoming predators. Lear's bullying has become a cycle of violence and abuse where Goneril, a victim of her father's tyranny, bullies her husband "O vain fool! … Marry, your manhood mew" and Regan calls for the blinding of Gloucester "One side will mock another; th' other too". Cordelia, however as the favoured daughter has through a more balanced treatment, developed a more ration approach to life.

The dysfunctional family dynamics could be highlighted on stage through the opening Act 1 scene i. The elder daughters would be portrayed as ambitious and eager to break through the glass ceiling to take the place of the patriarch who has given them no power as yet, costumed in scarlet and crimson tailored women's suits they would display their strength through these strong colours. Meanwhile, Cordelia would be dressed more simply in casual clothing showing her down to earth attitude. When Lear reveals that he is saving a "third more opulent than [Cordelia's] sisters", the sisters' animosity is aimed by look and tone towards both Cordelia and Lear.

Another scene which holds great potential for the exploration of familial ties, is Act scene iv - Goneril and Regan's confrontation with Lear. In the Royal Shakespeare company production in 176, Judi Dench played Regan with a stutter, challenging stereotypical divisions between the saintly and demonic sister. Performing Regan stuttering only in Lear's presence, and Lear displaying impatience at her disability through gesture and tone of voice, implies that Regan's "filial ingratitude" is a result not from monstrous nature, but from parental tyranny. Through this family / psychological reading it is evident that there is potential violence and harm inherent in the relationship between father and daughters and the dangers of favouritism. Through Lear's unequal treatment of the daughters and his blindness to the elder daughters' good qualities, Lear has created an atmosphere of competition among the siblings For a contemporary audience family issues that are explored in King Lear remain applicable and relevant.

Cheap Custom Essays on King Lear - feminist perspective

Critic Jan Kott saw the play as an "enquiry into the meaning of the journey from cradle to the grave, into the existence or non-existence of heaven or hell". Since the aftermath of WW I & II, current threat of terrorism and disease pandemics, the fears and anxieties of the 1st C audience have increased. As a result a pessimistic interpretation of King Lear has become increasingly popular. As Frank Kermode observed, the 1st C audience live in an age where they "defamiliarise violence". A pessimistic interpretation stems from a Nihilistic/ Existentialist reading where there is no meaning in life, no framework, no pattern, and no divine plan/justice to contain the cycle of vehement and malicious destruction once it is released. Existentialism rejects reason, moralilty and rationality as the driving force of humanity and argues that the Universe lacks inherent order. There is confusion in the belief of divine justice throughout the play. Gloucester thinks the gods are spitefully unjust "As flies to wanton boys are we to th' gods; they kill us for their sport", he then revises his opinion "You ever gentle gods". It seems there is no poetic and divine justice in the play only negate existence. This is confirmed in both the main plot and sub-plot where innocent Cordelia has died cruelly and Gloucester's blinding and menal suffering hardly fit his crime of fathering the bastard Edmund.

Repeated warnings about alarming security breaches at the nations airports, made by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) whistleblower, have been confirmed by federal government report citing gross mismanagement by the agency that resulted in a substantial and specific danger to public safety. Yet despite claims by the Department of Transportation (DOT) that airports are now safer than they were before September 11, 001, failure to force airlines to disrupt their business-as-usual routines means that inconvenienced passengers still are at risk.

The U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) today publicly released findings upholding allegations made by former FAA security expert Bogdan Dzakovic that the FAAs division of Civil Aviation Security (CAS) had deliberately covered up an elite security units pre-/11 findings that reflected poorly on the airline industry. The OSC concluded that DOTs report appears reasonable about strengthening air safety, but is unreasonable about the personal accountability of FAA officials responsible for the airport security breakdown. That means the report flunks minimum statutory standards.

Dzakovic was a member of the FAAs Red Team, which traveled to major U.S. and foreign airports to covertly test airport security systems, was considered the lynchpin of FAA aviation security efforts. Since making his disclosures, Dzakovics job at the new Transportation Security Agency (TSA) has been limited almost entirely to clerks duties and answering the graveyard shift special emergency telephone where he must wake up someone else if anything goes wrong. Special Counsel Elaine Kaplan pledged to continue investigating the on-going retaliation against him.

Cheap Custom Essays on september 11, 2001

The OSCs findings vindicate Bogdan Dzakovics pre-September 11 warnings that this countrys airports were sitting ducks for terrorists, said Tom Devine, Dzakovics attorney and legal director of the Government Accountability Project (GAP), a Washington, D.C.-based public interest law firm. His early warnings about what could happen were tragically confirmed, at an enormous human and economic cost to this country.

Personal vindication is welcome, but we are not so reassured by recent developments, Devine continued. Both government agencies skipped the bottom line reaffirmed by every whistleblower and witness GAP has interviewed; a year and a half after the /11 tragedy, the airports are not safer. The TSAs changes have made passengers miserable but carefully avoided disrupting lax airline routines. With our nation on the brink of war, this is inexcusable. The OSC conclusion that promised reforms appear reasonable doesnt cut it. The Department of Transportation perfected the art of maintaining false appearances before /11. Hopefully, the Homeland Security Department will get serious.

Devine added Fortunately, Special Counsel Elaine Kaplan is dissatisfied that this valued senior member of the FAA Red Team was not given a role in the TSAs new covert testing program.

Ms. Kaplan correctly rejected the assurances of Admiral James M. Loy, then undersecretary of transportation for security, that Mr. Dzakovic had been assigned to a new position where he would be able to make full use of his talents. Those promises were as empty as the FAAs claims that it was protecting the American people, Devine noted. Bogdan Dzakovics current job shows that, despite the much-ballyhooed changes in airport security, the more things change the more they stay the same.

After finding a substantial likelihood Dzakovics allegations were correct, the OSC, the federal agency charged with protecting the employment rights of whistleblowers, in February 00 ordered Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta to investigate Dzakovics charges that Red Team reports were suppressed.

Although Loy told the OSC that the days of the old FAA Red Team are gone, a vigorous efforts to replace the failed system are in place, Kaplan noted several serious deficiencies in the OIGs report. For example, she said, Loys letter did not address what has been done with respect to those individuals at higher levels within FAA CAS who mismanaged the Red Team and failed to take effective action to improve airport security.

Admiral Loy is right when he says the bad old days of the Red Team are over, said Dzakovic. It has been replaced by a Pink Team that now concentrates on audits handicapped to novice screeners skill levels, instead of mock terrorist raids. It means that my colleagues are gagged from talking with me and picking up six years of lessons learned.

Oedipus a Tragic Hero

According to Aristotle's in the Poetics, certain characteristics must be met in order for the audience to be able to identify a tragic hero. First of all, a tragic hero must cause his own destruction; his punishment must be bigger than his crime. Secondly, a tragic hero must be a nobleman and have greatness or power. Finally the audience must feel sympathy and fear for the hero. I think based on these characteristics; Oedipus could definitely be considered a tragic hero. An Oracle told Oedipus that he would kill his father and marry he is mother. Oedipus trying to run from his own destiny decides to move to Thebes. On his way to Thebes, Oedipus kills a man, not knowing that this man he had just murdered was his biological father. In Thebes everybody is excited because Oedipus had just killed the Sphinx and as a token of their appreciation they make Oedipus the king and he gets to marry Jocasta, his biological mother. Oedipus doesn't realize that murdering this man and marrying Jocasta he has just fulfilled the prediction of the Oracle.

First of all, we can see Oedipus cause his own destruction when he starts looking for the person that killed Laius and went he starts digging into his own past. There was a plague in Thebes and Oedipus sends Creon to consult the oracle so they can finally end this plague. The oracle tells him that the plague comes because of an unpunished murder. Oedipus seeks for Teiresias help to find Lauis murderer. Oedipus doesn't know that Teiresias knows who his parents really are and that the murdered that his looking for is himself. Oedipus starts questioning Teiresias, when Teiresias tells him that he is the killer Oedipus refuses to believe him. A messenger comes to inform Oedipus that his father Polybus had died and that they wanted Oedipus to become the king of Corinth. Oedipus is relieved to hear that Polybus had died because now there's no way that prophecy can be realized. The messenger tells Oedipus that Polybus and Merope where not his real parents and he proceeds to tell him what happened when Oedipus was a baby. Oedipus sends for the shepherd after he founds out that the shepherd was the one that gave Oedipus to Polybus and Merope. When Oedipus talks to the shepherd, he realized that he couldn't escape from his own destiny.

Secondly, there are a couple of instances that show us that Oedipus was a nobleman and a man of great power. Oedipus is the son of Laius and Jcasta, the King and Queen of Thebes, his parents where loyalty. He also believed he was the son of Polybus and Merope, the King and Queen of Corinth. Finally the people of Thebes respect Oedipus when he solves the riddle of the Sphinx and finally gets rid of this monster that was terrorizing the people of Thebes. We can see that in different senses he was a noble man and the people admired him.

Buy custom OEDIPUS A TRAGIC HERO term paper

One of the last characteristics a tragic hero must have is that the audience must feel sympathy and fear for the hero. We can see this happen when Oedipus finally realizes that he had killed his father and that the women he has married was really his mother. We can also see this when Oedipus runs to get Jocasta and he realizes that she has killed herself. It is also very sad and tragic when Oedipus takes his eyes out. The fact that he chooses to take his eyes out instead of just killing himself, I think is what provokes that feeling of sympathy and fear from the audience.

In conclusion when I think about that tragic heroes, Oedipus always come to mind first. I love this story because it shows how you can't escape your own destiny. I also believed that according to Aristotle's characteristics of what makes a tragic hero, Oedipus has all of these characteristics. It is horrible the fate that awaits Oedipus and the truth is it wasn't his fault that he was born in that situation. The only thing that he wanted to do was find out the truth of his past and of Lauis killer. Little did he know he was setting himself and his family for a horrifying ending. Oedipus left Thebes with his daughters and he lived blind for a few years before he finally died.

Globalisation is basically giving the world a way to communicate with one another by new and improved technology. Globalisation is going on around you everyday, everywhere. Some examples are T.V, radio, Internet, and international traveling. Some people strongly believe globalisation is a bad thing, while others are all for it. Then there are those who are for and against globalisation. It's a tough call, because of course there are advantages, disadvantages, and consequences. This essay will cover those topics and show the good and bad points of globalisation, and try to determine whether it is a negative or positive thing in the world.

Sometimes things seem wonderful on the surface, such as globalisation. People who think of globalisation being a positive thing, probably think of the fantastic things they get out of it, like clothes, money, and entertainment, all great reasons to like it. But all good things come with a cost. The costs in some cases are child labor (in places such as sweatshops), poverty, starvation, discrimination, and violation of human rights.

Globalisation creates a large gap between the rich and poor throughout the world, it also increases environmental problems and destroys some people's chances to have a fair working environment in the workforce today. Globalisation however has increased the awareness of discrimination against women in some countries, and there are organisations to help stop the inequality, such as the UN, who have been pushing for more rights for women. One thing they have achieved is an International Women's Day, which is on the 8th of March. Yet this does not stop women from still suffering. Their wages are still very low ($16 a week in some cases), they are abused in many ways, and have less representation in government. But this inequality might not be as bad if there was no globalisation in the first place. Transnational companies like Nike or The Gap wouldn't have moved their factories around the world and to poorer countries to create jobs in sweatshops, which is where a lot of the abuse, low wages, child labour, and other problems are situated.

People are not the only ones suffering, the environment has as well. With production being spread over several countries from many large transnational companies (Nike, Gap, Addidas) it has become very difficult to lay down minimum rules for the environment. Globalisation implies a risk for the environment, and none of the transnational companies are willing to take any real action.

Custom writing service can write essays on GLOBALISATION

Globalisation has a lot of disadvantages and negatives as stated in the previous paragraphs, but it also does have many positives. billion people have been lifted out of poverty in the last 50 years because of globalisation. It has also created more jobs for people all over the world, and created awareness to people of such things as discrimination, abuse, and environmental problems. Now organizations have been formed to help stop these things happening and prevent them from occurring in the future. It is a long slow battle that is being fought by many different groups such as, Amnesty International, WTO, the Kyoto Protocol, S11, to name a few.

Another advantage of globalisation is how information travels the world, like the news and current affairs of cures for cancer and other illness's, heart research, and medical discoveries.

Overall it can be seen that this essay has been somewhat biased. There is more information written about the negative aspects of globalisation than there is about the positives. This could be because of several different circumstances. There was more information available on the net and in movies about the disadvantages, and because I had also heard more information about the down side of globalisation through other people, I tended to focus more on those bad points. So I think that had an effect on me, and my decision on this topic. But I'm not totally against globalisation, I think its great for a lot of people, and saves a lot of lives, but also many other people will not get to experience the positives, and on the contrary people will also die from it. I would hate to live without globalisation, but I'm very against the negative effects on it. And I hate having to make a definite decision, yes it is good, or no it is bad. I'm one of many who can't decide easily. But because a decision must be made I would chose that globalisation is a bad thing. I'm a big person on fairness, and it seems the more poor people work the poorer they become, whilst the rich people have become richer. This is basically the only way I could make my decision, and even then it was still very, very hard, and took me quite a while to decide on it. It was basically a game of "eany meany miny mo" for me.

For those who are familiar with it, Punk Rock is a popular style of music because it allows for more freedom than the mainstream genres. Lyrically, artists of this genre can express themselves without fear of being criticized for their radical ideas. Also, most punk rock bands are on independent, widely unknown labels. This is a benefit in that they do not have to worry about how their image or behavior affects the image of their label, as do artists on major labels such as Sony or Warner Brothers. Another advantage of punk rock is that the artists are free to musically try new things and explore new styles. Similarly, since the birth of Mtv is the 180s, pop music has seemed to move in a direction which favors pretty faces over talent, this is not true for punk rock. Finally, many people would prefer the intimate setting of a punk rock show to the massive stadium concerts of a more mainstream artist. Because they are not seen on tv or played on the radio, punk rock bands rely on fans to share music they enjoy with other people and the relationship that is formed, and the appreciation from the bands, gives punk rock a whole new aspect that might not be enjoyed in other genres.

We all saw how recently many pop or country artist who expressed unfavorable political views were condemned for voicing these opinions. However, artists like the Clash, Anti-flag, Propaghandi, Bad Religion, and others have been expressing political and social oppositions for years, free from media backlash. Controversy is the essence of punk rock. The movement was started by bands like the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols, in the late 170s, with a conscious effort to go against the norm. More than a musical style, punk rock is a vehicle for artists to express opinions, question authority, and challenge listeners to think for themselves.

Since its birth, punk rock has developed in multiple directions. Because they have so much creative freedom, artists continue to musically reinvent the genre. With more popular genres, there is pressure to write music that will sell the most records, leading artist to write music similar to that which has been popular in the past. So many terrible carbon copied bands saturate the airwaves, manufactured by record labels trying to capitalize on trends and fads. Weary listeners may find relief in the fresh, ever changing punk rock scene. From the Pixies, to the Misfits, to Saves the Day, the punk rock genre offers a wide spectrum of musical and lyrical styles. Divided into countless sub-genres such as emo, hardcore, ska, pop-punk, etc., punk rock offers music for every taste.

When you look at the popular artists off today, you have to wonder how many of them would be famous if they were not so physically attractive. It makes no sense that people would listen to someones music because of the way they look, but that is the current trend. The pop music industry knows this, that is why they created Milli Vanilli in the Eighties, and why they manufacture boy bands today. Punk rock has not yet felt the wrath of the Mtv generation and still favors creativity and talent over tight bodies and skimpy outfits. However, punk rock music does have its sex appeal, apparent in the Distillers Brody Armstrong, Vice Squads Beki Bondage, and Bouncing Souls Greg Attonito.

Cheap University Papers on Punk Rock - an informative essay

Finally, the intimate settings of punk rock shows offers the intimacy and personal connections that over-crowded concerts can not. Smaller audiences allow for more interaction and more of a connection between artists and fans, without having to pay exorbitant amounts of money for front row tickets. Punk rock fans have the opportunity to witness the development of infant bands from their local scene as they gain world wide recognition. Also, without the benefit of radio and television this growth is facilitated almost entirely by the fans. The fans recognize this and feel a connection to the bands they helped make popular, and the bands recognize this and show the appreciation for their fans.

Although other genres of music all have their advantages, punk rock music allows freedom that the other, more popular genres can not. Whether or not you are a fan of this particular genre, you have to appreciate the musical creativity and refreshing lyrical freedom that punk rock offers. In the late 180s and early 10s many people thought this genre was dead, but it has continued to grow and develop in the underground scenes and the garages of aspiring musicians. Although these artists may never gain the recognition of the general public, or substantial financial gains, they continue to play the music that they love. Everyday another young person is enlightened to the world of punk rock music, ensuring that this genre will be around for years to come.

Tony Blairs not on his way out, but its not clear where hes going

THERES something rather thrilling about watching Tony Blair on form. There he is, facing his partys annual conference, bloodied by the failure to find any Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, the corrosive effect of the Hutton Inquiry and the wars messy aftermath; with Labour traditionalists who oppose his market-oriented policies out to pull his domestic agenda apart; with the press announcing his imminent replacement by his ambitious chancellor of the exchequer, Gordon Brown. And yet his brilliant showmans sense catches the audiences mood with a speech that is bruised, touched with humility, but above all defiant. He is unrepentant about Iraq and apparently determined not to give an inch of ground on his domestic agenda to his critics. I have no reverse gear, he said. Most of the audience loved it, though the metaphor doesnt bear too much consideration as a BBC commentator pointed out afterwards, if you are on the edge of a cliff, a reverse gear is quite useful.

Still, displays of bravado do not answer the fundamental question. Is Mr Blair now so damaged that he is no longer an asset to his party, but a liability? The trust of the electorate is hard to earn and easy to lose. If poll after poll is to be believed--according to an NOP poll this week (see chart, above), nearly two-thirds of voters believe he lied to them over Iraq--the prime minister has forfeited it. Some people think that this loss of moral stature will, and should, bring Mr Blairs political career to an end.

Going nowhere

Write my Essay on tony blair's leadership for me

It wont and it shouldnt. While Mr Blair--arguably Labours most successful leader ever--deserves criticism for the way the government presented its case for war with Iraq, there is no evidence that he lied. For all the obsessive interest in the minutiae of September 00s dossier on Iraqi capabilities and intentions, nothing has emerged to suggest that Mr Blairs belief in the threat posed by Saddam Hussein was anything other than heartfelt. Whether or not it was right to fight the war remains a matter of judgment. But although hindsight shows how the prime minister might have done some things differently and better, his sincerity should not be in question.

This is crucial for Mr Blair. For all the passionate opposition to the war among some Labour Party activists, even those who think that he made a terrible mistake appear ready to concede that at least he thought he was doing the right thing, and that he thought he had good grounds for that belief. Mr Blairs explanation in his speech to the conference of his decision to go to war was listened to with respect, understanding and even some applause. His reception overall, culminating in a seven-minute standing ovation at the end of a speech in which he had not ducked any of the difficult issues, was a deliberate message to the outside world. The Labour Party still wants Mr Blair to be its leader and will not allow him to be destroyed over Iraq. His achievement is to have made Labour feel for the first time in its 10-year history that it can be the natural party of government and it is sufficiently grateful for that not to desert him in his hour of need.

None of which means that the prime ministers recent difficulties are at an end. Mr Blair remains at odds with much of his party and the trade unions over his plans for public services. In particular, he still faces intense opposition to his efforts to give hospitals some independence from bureaucrats, within the National Health Service. A motion opposing these foundation hospitals was passed at the conference. That wont make any difference to government policy; but a possible Commons defeat over its plans to charge students some of the costs of a university education certainly would.

In the course of his speech, Mr Blair talked about the need for a government half way through its second term of office, and with every prospect of achieving a third term, to find the resources to renew itself. If that means more of what Mr Blair says he believes in, it will mean more competition between providers in health and education; looser Whitehall control on pretty much everything that goes on in the public sector, including greater powers for local government to raise money and decide what to do with it; an end to the centralisation of public-sector pay which means that teachers in expensive London get paid pretty much the same as teachers in western Scotland. Such changes would do the country a lot of good, and be fiercely resisted by the party and the unions.

Here lies Mr Blairs difficulty. Although the Labour Party made it clear this week that it is happy for him to be its leader, it has made it equally clear that it is unwilling to go where he wants to go. He says hes not reversing. The Labour Party doesnt want to go forward. Unless he can resolve that problem, Britain is not likely to go anywhere.

Euthanasia is based on the idea of compassion and is the committing of an act or the omission of an act that will result in death. Active euthanasia in an act that directly causes death. Passive euthanasia is the non-performance of an act that causes death. The American Medical Association's rules allow a physician to practice passive euthanasia but not active euthanasia. In James Rachel's paper "Active and Passive Euthanasia", Rachel's arguments concerning active and passive euthanasia disagree with the American Medical Association's view. The main premise of Rachel's paper is there are no moral differences in passive and active euthanasia. Therefore, in a situation where passive euthanasia is acceptable, active euthanasia should be acceptable.

Rachel's first argument is that passive euthanasia is not more moral than active euthanasia, and may actually be considered less moral. This is based on the premise that the decision of euthanasia for the patient has been made. Rachel does not argue the morality of euthanasia, only the type. Rachel states that active euthanasia, having a quicker outcome of death, causes less pain and suffering. Passive euthanasia can be slower and more painful and therefore crueler to the patient, thus leaving active euthanasia the more humane and moral choice.

The second argument is based on Rachel's assumption that passive euthanasia decisions may be based on irrelevant grounds and leads to decisions that are not made based on equal logic. The example Rachel gives is the withholding of food from a baby born with Down's syndrome and an intestinal obstruction. Rachel states that the Down's syndrome should be irrelevant when making a decision of euthanasia for the baby. Some parents will chose passive euthanasia, and the withholding of life saving surgery, based on their logic of a diminished quality of life for the child because of the Down's syndrome. Other parents will choose to have the surgery for their baby based on their concept of quality of life.

Rachel questions whether letting someone die is worse than killing someone or is there no difference in the morality of active and passive euthanasia. The example given discusses whether there is a difference in the morality in watching a child drown in a bathtub and not helping save the child (passive) or holding the child's head under the water in the bathtub and causing the child to drown (active). If the withholding of help to a dying patient is acceptable according to The American Medical Association, then Rachel states the person watching the child drown should have a defense they played no role in the drowning of the child, they only omitted giving help. Rachel disagrees with the American Medical Association and says this is not a defense, thus concluding there are no moral differences in withholding help and actively participating in the death.

Custom Essays on Euthanasia

One of the weaknesses of Rachel's argument is that his basic premise is based on an incorrect argument. He argues that there is no moral difference in letting someone die and in performing active euthanasia. Active euthanasia is the participation in the killing of the patient. The active act of killing someone is worse than permitting the patient to die. Therefore there are more moral conflicts in the active act versus the passive omission. Rachel would argue against this weakness with the child drowning in the tub example. Both the behaviors in the drowning example were reprehensible and one is not worse that the other.

Another weakness in Rachel's arguments is that the cause of death is not an issue. With active euthanasia, the doctor is actually killing the patient. In passive euthanasia, the disease is killing the patient. Rachel's rebuttal would be the cause of death is not as important as the good done by the euthanasia. The active killing of the patient by the physician is not wrong if the outcome is better for the patient than the traditional American Medical Association's approach of passivity.

After the decision is made to participate in euthanasia, Rachel reasons that active euthanasia should be as acceptable, if not more so, that passive euthanasia. The patient should be able to determine the method of euthanasia and not the physician. Rachel makes a case that if the American Medical Society permits passive euthanasia, then active euthanasia should be permitted as well. There are weaknesses in Rachel's reasoning that lend support to the American Medical Society's position that physicians may only participate in euthanasia by omission. Intent cannot be separated from the act. Our culture holds human life as sacred and considers the intentional killing of a person, except in defense of another human life, as wrong. The consequences of active participation in the death have more serious consequences as seen by the incarceration of Dr. Kevorkian for his participation in active euthanasia. Our society is still examining the morality of euthanasia. In general, if someone accepts the idea of euthanasia, passive euthanasia is generally acceptable for our society.

Thinking

Ideology is a way of thinking that reflect the social needs and political doctrines of an individual or group. There are many different people and different circumstances this results in a variety of different ways of thinking, values and beliefs. Our ideology grows with us from childhood.

From the moment you are born the family influence begins to impact your thought process. A child is like a sponge that absorbs ideas and beliefs. Beliefs are taught to a child in subtle ways such as just listening to the parents and their opinions from everything including politics, social problems, moral issues and even opinions about how others behave. It is within the family unit that a person learns their moral values. It is from their parents that a child is taught right and wrong. Often this is through religious training. Religious beliefs or the lack of religious beliefs has a great influence on a persons beliefs and values. In the early years a child looks to their parents as the final authority on any subject. Its not uncommon to overhear a child explain something as being absolutely true because their mommy or daddy said so.

As a child grows older they see the world through outside influences such as the school system, the media, and their peers. School is often a child first opportunity to think for themselves. They experiment with ideas and values of their own. School teaches children to use a critical thought process. One way where this is done is if a child is given an opinion in a debate and they must find reasons to defend a certain viewpoint. They are exposed to a wide variety of viewpoint and opinions. Another source of influence on values and beliefs is the media. Free speech guarantees the rights of anyone to express their opinions. Children begin to form new beliefs and ideas of their own, the family influence is still there, but just not as strong. Also, peers become a major influence on a young persons thinking. To express their newfound values a child will often go through a stage of rebellion where they reject a lot of their parents values. This doesnt mean that they have taken on a whole new belief system. It just means they are expanding the values, thinking, and belief system from the home with new ideas and thoughts.

Cheap Custom Essays on Thinking

The country where you are raised is one of the major influences on a persons values and thinking process. If you look at different countries political beliefs and economic systems and study the history its clear the impact that the country you live in has on a persons thinking values and beliefs. For example if you examine Canada and the United States and compare ideologies and then look at their history and how each country is similar and also different due to their historical past. Every country has a dominant ideology, but within it are many competing ideologies. For example Canadas political culture could be described as primarily liberal, but within that is a wide diversity of beliefs. In Canada the competing ideologies are conservatism and socialism. By comparison the United States ideology is very predominantly liberalism. Their historical backgrounds appear to have caused the differences.

Canada reflects the ideologies that were brought with the original settlers of French Canada and English Canada. These settlers brought ideologies with them that reflected their experiences in Europe. Over time these ideologies changed and adapted to the Canadian life. This resulted in a liberal ideology similar to the United States but certainly not identical. Canadians are more conservative in their traditions and politics. By comparison, United States early settlers were mostly liberal in their political beliefs. The American frontier was founded by individualistic and often lawless people who came to America to escape the European traditions. Many of the traditional British Loyalists rejected the American Revolution and came to Canada. The United States has stayed very liberal in their thinking. Liberalism is system that celebrates the individual and his liberty. This liberal ideology of individualism is a central part of the American national identity. The American version of Liberal ideology focuses solely on individual rights and freedoms. The Canadian liberal ideology centers on individual rights but it also allows more room for the collective rights of people as a group. A comparison of the Canadian ideology and the American ideology shows how our ancestors pass down their thinking and values and beliefs.

It seems that individuals adopt the thinking, values and beliefs of those around them. People learn their values from their families first. Later many other factors like the media, religious training, school system, and peers continue to influence a person's belief. Also of great importance is the country you live in. A countrys historical past is very influential in a persons beliefs and values. There many differing ideologies in a country but there is usually a predominate ideology, and its citizen tend to believe in its countries ideological superiority. Our thinking, values and beliefs are a mix of what we are taught and the country we live in. Finally, each persons experiences make their ideology unique.

Monster's Ball

Monster's ball really doesn't give much sound at all. Instead of depending on sound or tone music the movie express' the emotions of the characters by showing more face close ups and body movements. The viewer is made to sense and feel the emotion of the character just by the acting that is being done. For example when P. Diddy is being taken on his last walk, the camera in focused on him in front of the guards and it shows his sweaty face, enlarged eyes, and flaring nostrils representing fear. When a car hits Halle Berry's son, the movie shows a frantic woman in search of help for her son. She is crying in the rain, trying to help her son come back to this world. There is only an eerie background sound, nothing to loud to drown out the sound of the characters.

This film made a very dramatic impact on the viewer with only a couple special effects. In reality it wouldn't really considered a special effect. The scene in which P. Diddy is being electrocuted is the only scene that had any special effects. It was mostly sound, good lighting and a good actor. That was one of the primary special effects. Even though it was very simple and mostly likely cost effect for the budget of the movie, it brought out some fear, or sympathy from the viewer toward the character. Billy BodThorton has a son in the begging of the movie. After a confrontation between the both of them that altered the mood of the movie, the next scene that is showed is his son holding a gun and threatening to kill the father. But instead of killing the father, the son commits suicide by shooting himself in the chest.

Do my essay on Monster's Ball Review CHEAP !

Dialogue in the movie is well written and helped to also set the position of the movie and of the characters. P. Diddy and Halle Berry speak in a form of ebonics. Most likely to show a lack of education from those characters. Billy Bod, his son and father speak English better, but it still is a basic english. With the dialogue that was given to then the viewer could interpret them as one of two thing; they had some form of higher education but not too extensive, or it's a working class dialogue with out perfect structure. All of the dialogue had a southern accent to it.

Every single one of the characters was well formed in this movie. There are 6 main characters; Billy Bod Thornton as Hank, Halle Berry as Leticia, Heath Ledger as Sonny, Peter Boyle as Buck, Coronji Calhoun as Tyrell, and P. Diddy as Lawrence. Billy Bod is set up to be this emotionless monster at the begging of the movie, but as the movie progress' and many negative factors unfold in his life he learns to love. Halle is a sinlge mother struggling to provide for her son, working any kind of job. Her husband is on death row, so she is left with the burden of the house payments and trying to provide. Heath is Billy Bod's son, he is the mirror image of Billy Bod because he is caring, nice and a non-racist. Unlike his father, the only similarity that they have is their DNA and the job that they both have. Peter Boyle is a typical southern racist who the viewer comes to hate because of his simple-minded ideas and negative view on life. Coronji Calhoun is the son of Halle and P., he is a simple child just interested in his candy. But he is caught in an adult world because of the financial situation and the incarceration of his father. Finally P. Diddy is the man who is on death row. He is very calm and non-aggressive. His character is portrayed as a bit of an artisan because of his sketches that are shown throughout the movie.

The whole plot of the movie is actually very simple when you think of it. Billy Bod is trying to live in his father's image and is confused. He then has to execute an inmate who ends up being Halle's husband. After the death of his son and a non-violent confrontation with one of his neighbors his ideas begin to change. Then he meets Halle in a diner where she is substituting for the regular waitress because she need money to provide for her son since her husband is in jail. A car then hits Halle's son in the middle of the road. Billy Bod is then moved to help her. That's where a relationship begins to emerge, and where Billy Bod has new view on life. After spending more time together, Billy Bod then buys a gas station, names it Leticia, and he also puts his father in a nursing home. That is the begging of the new Billy. When Halle is evicted he is there to save her and bring her into his house. But before he did that, he painted his whole house to a white color instead of the dull depressing brown. Once they are living together Halle finds out that Billy is the one who executed her husband. But ironically she is now with the man who killed her husband, but did everything he could to save her son.

The Reality of Life's cruelest animals in Hemingway's

"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber "

In Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" the story shows us that the cruelest of all animals in the animal kingdom are humans. The cruelest, most domineering, and incapable of having any feelings for anyone but themselves are the worst ones to cope with. As you see in this story, when the domineering people feel threatened, they will go to great lengths to protect their position. These cruel people see an opportunity to gain control over someone weaker than themselves they seize it.

Francis Macomber is a timid man, who has just shown how cowardly he is during his first hunt for a lion. Robert Wilson, the white hunter, is starting to see the fear in the eyes of Macomber. It is time to go in the tall grass after the mortally wounded lion, who is waiting for the humans to approach. "The next thing [Macomber] knew he was running; running wildly, in a panic in the open… (Hemingway 1). This action shows Margot, Macomber's wife, Wilson, and the gun-bears that Francis "…had just shown himself, very publicly, to be a coward" (78). Wilson sees how Margot treats her husband and how she talks to him, yet Wilson blames Francis for that.

Wilson takes Margot Macomber for what she is.

When she left, Wilson was thinking, when she went off

to cry, she seemed a hell of a fine woman. She seemed

to understand, to realize, to be hurt for him and for herself

Boyer

and to know how things really stood. She is away for

twenty minutes and now she is back, simply enameled in

that American female cruelty. They are the damnest women. Really the damnest (8).

Wilson is categorizing Margot as one of those damn American women, who are the cruelest. Although Wilson himself is a cruel and heartless man, he sees the cruelness of Margot toward her husband and their marriage. "They are, he thought, the hardest in the world; The hardest, cruelest, the most predatory and the most attractive and their men have softened or gone to pieces nervously as they hardened" (8). This is how we see her, with her actions and remarks against her husband. She threatens to leave Francis if he does not behave himself but she knows that she will never leave him. "…but she was not a great enough beauty any more at home to be able to leave him and better herself and she knew it and he knew it" (). Margot is not worried about leaving Francis, it is his money.

Wilson only cares about himself and getting paid, and if another man's wife wants to be bedded by him, Wilson has no problem doing just that. Margot shamelessly flirts with Wilson, in front of her husband, and shares his cot with him. Wilson proves himself as cruel and heartless as Margot. This is not the first time Margot has been unfaithful to Francis and for some reason he puts up with it. "Well, why doesn't he keep his wife where she belongs? What does he think I am a bloody plaster saint? Let him

Boyer

keep her where she belongs. It's his own fault " (4). We see here that Wilson has no respect for Francis and he could care less about what he is doing, right or wrong.

Francis now lay face down on the ground dead. Wilson's cold-heartedness becomes very clear when his thoughts are only of the bull; the bull and the control that he has just gained over Margot Macomber. "' Hell of a bull' his brain registered automaticly.'a good fifty inches, or better. Better"' (105). Wilson could care less that Francis was just shot and killed.

As Margot feels the shifting of power and the loss of Francis's timid streak, She realizes that her control over him will be gone."' You've gotten awfully brave awfully sudden' [she] said contemptuously, but her contempt was not secure. She was very afraid of something" (10). Margot knows now that she has to kill Francis or she may not be married, to his money, much longer. "' Isn't it sort of late?"' (10). Yes, Margot cries about shooting her husband but is she crying over him, his money, or that her domineering, controlling position has disappeared? Now it is Wilson who is the controlling person in this situation and he is enjoying the torment he is causing Margot. "' Please, please stop it"' (105). Wilson replies"' Please is much better. Now I'll stop"' (105). It just goes to show you that humans, people, are the cruelest of all animals and will take advantage of any situation they feel they can keep control of.
