Lonesome Guy Montag

Guy Montag is a thirty-year-old fireman who lives in a small town. Guy Montag is a misguided person. " I'm going to do something," said Montag. "I don't even know what yet, but I'm going to do something big," (65). This is an example of foreshadowing; Montag is planning something that he will do in the future, even though he doesn't know what it is that he is going to do. Montag is always being told what to do and in planning his big moment he feels like he is in charge of himself for the first time.

Along with many other things Montag is Confused. He doesn't know what to do with his life, and he doesn't understand things that are happening in society today. "Jesus God," said Montag. "Every hour so many Damn things in the sky! How in the hell did those bombers get up there every single second of their lives! Why doesn't someone want to talk about it! We've started and won two atomic wars since 10! Is it because we're having so much fun at home we've forgotten the world? Is it because we're so rich and the rest of the world is so poor and we just don't care if they are? I've heard rumors; the world is starving, but we're well fed. Is it true the world works hard and we play? Is that why we're hated so much? I've heard the rumors about hate, too, once in a long while, over the years…" (7-74). Montag is full of questions he asks questions to have a better understanding of things that are going on with himself and with society.

Montag above all other things is unhappy. His wife is never there for him and he doesn't have anyone to talk to. When Montag has a crisis he can't turn to his wife because she'll just make jokes. Mildred doesn't try to comfort Montag in any way, instead she says things like "The keys to the beetle are on the night table. I always like to drive fast when I feel that way. You get it up around ninety-five and you feel wonderful. Sometimes I drive all night and come back and you don't know. It's fun out in the country. You hit rabbits, sometimes you hit dogs. Go take the beetle." (64). His wife doesn't comfort him for anything so he has no choice, but to admit that he is unhappy. "Yes it might be a good idea. Before I hurt someone. Did you hear Beatty? Did you listen to him? He knows all the answers. He's right. Happiness is important. Fun is everything. And yet I kept sitting there saying to myself, I'm not happy, I'm not happy." Montag breaks down and tells the truth. He finally summons up the strength to tell Mildred how he feels. This is a giant step for Montag in his search for happiness.

Montag is all alone in his quest for doing what he believes is right and finding his true self. "Nobody listens any more. I can't talk to the walls because they're yelling at me. I can't talk to my wife, she listens to the walls. I just want someone to hear what I have to say. And maybe if I talk long enough, it'll make sense. And I want you to teach me to understand what I read." (8). Montag's quest for doing what he believes is right, is going to start here. Understanding books is his first step towards reaching his goal, which at the moment seems impossible.

Montag's one weakness is that he cannot do things on his own. Throughout the story Montag strives to do things on his own. "I'm not thinking. I'm just doing like I'm told, like always. You said get the money and I got it. I didn't really think of it myself. When do I start working things out on my own?"(). In the end everything that once looked it impossible is now possible for Montag. He is successful in his quest for happiness and finding his true self.
