I'm from the Czech Republic and have been living in Neath for a year, working as an au pair and studying English in the College's Queen Street Centre. The main reason for returning to education is that I decided that I would like to be a primary teacher.

When I was a child I had never thought about my future career. Stories and fairy tales influenced me and I wanted to have various adventures. Then I started to attend basic school and all my dreams changed. My plans for my future career changed from day to day. I wanted to be an actress, a cook, a scientist, a postman, an artist and a teacher. Later my parents advised me to go on to secondary school education.

During secondary school I began to think about my future more seriously. I began to realise I wanted to work with people; I wanted to do something meaningful for them. I liked listening to my friends' problems I cared for them. Sometimes I was helpful to them, for example to my best friend Alena. Alena's father died when she was ten. He died because of serious family problems. For years after her dad died she did not have much contact with her mother. I was able to help her to start talking to her mother again and now they are friends. I didn't judge them or blame anyone for what had happened, because I was outside the situation; but I was still concerned for them both. I was interested in finding a solution. I found I had the skills to talk to a person a lot older then myself like parents, head teachers, and inspectors. I was respectful towards her and she responded.

I am non-judgemental, because I feel strongly that one should accept people as they are and that everyone is entitled to be themselves. I don't like it when I hear gossip and I try not to do it myself. I think an effective teacher treats a child as a person not just a pupil. Not all children are easy to like and every child has individual needs. The duty as a teacher is not to judge but to give each one an equal opportunity.

I decided to be a primary teacher, because I like children. I like playing games with them, using fantasy, reading fairy tales and doing drama with them. I want to teach young children, because they are more natural and they have lots of imagination. I want to share my knowledge and skills with the children and make them happy, content and confident.

I have already some experience as an au pair. I looked after two young boys who were attending a local primary school and I helped them with any homework they had and reinforced their knowledge of maths and English. When I taught them it made me feel good. Living in another family's home was a good learning experience for both the family and myself and I adapted very well to the new working environment and different culture. I proved that I was reliable and trustworthy with the whole family and I felt comfortable being with them and working for them. I think to do the job well, au pair need a "sense of humour", patience and a mature attitude to assuming responsibility. I made up games, we played football, they liked to read fairy tales together and they really liked me.

I always tried to help them with any problems and they always told everything to me. For example, things that happened to them in school, how they fought in the toilet, which girls they like, things that they wouldn't tell their parents. We were good friends and I was good company for them, because I could relate to them. Sometimes I think I am like a child and I love in it.

When I came to Wales, my English wasn't so good but still I smiled even if I didn't understand. I spent my first months in my room and I learned English myself. I had big book for beginners and I finished it quite quickly. I think knowing a foreign language is part of good education. People who are able to speak more than one language have better opportunities to get a job and I think I have this ability it helps me to work under pressure and I enjoy it. I can say now that I can speak English as my second language and I can speak German as my third language. When I came to Neath I had new experiences, everything was new and after few months I became more confident not only in a foreign language but in life itself.

It is really important when working with children to show respect and understanding, also to be emotionally and physically stable. The teacher is someone children can trust and also teachers should be in control of themselves, even if they are angry or up set. I think an effective teacher doesn't have favourites and shouldn't neglect anyone. Good teachers don't lose their temper, they are hard working and fully dedicated to the class e.g. turns up on time, lesson is well prepared, and they keep their promises and don't forget what is expected.

One of my teachers in primary school in Czech, Mr Engelhart, made a very big difference to my reading. He taught Czech and History. He inspired me by encouraging me to read and explaining why I need to read more. I read lots of books after that and I could analyse them. He had good qualities as a teacher for me, which changed my life.

I can work both in a team or if necessary by myself. I can be a leader, because I am supportive, have common sense, honest, sensitive, thoughtful, loyal and one can really depend on me. I am strong when it comes to important things. For example, I can take difficult decisions. One the one hand, teaching is a demanding and sometimes stressful job but one the other hand, I helps me to communicate well with young people and I enjoy that part of teaching.

My plan after completing the course is to study BA (Hons) Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status in Swansea Institute. However I don't know where I like to teach if in Czech or in Britain.
