The title of the novel The Catcher In The Rye, by JD Salinger, has a

substantial connection to the story. This title greatly explains the main

character, Holden Caulfield, and his feelings towards life and human nature. In

Cheap Custom Essays on Sign up

society he has found enormous corruption, vulgarity, harm and havoc. He knows

that the children of the world are ruined by the corruption of adults around

them and, he states later in the novel, his new purpose in life will be to help

save the children from this vulgarity. Holden wants to be a Catcher in the

Rye. We first hear the title of the novel being used in chapter 16, and in

chapter we have the full explanation of this title. Human dignity is vital

to Holdens existence and the only way to guarantee this on a long term basis is

to assist children in maintaining their innocence from the dangers of adulthood.

In chapter 16 we have the first reference to the meaning of the novels

title, The Catcher in the Rye. Holden hears a little boy singing to himself a

verse which makes Holden very happy If a body catch a body coming through the

rye, (Page 115). It is difficult to understand why Holden is made happy by the

little boys singing unless one has an idea of what the song means to Holden.

The little boy is described by Holden in gentle caring terms The kid was

swell. He was walking in the street, instead of on the sidewalk, but right next

to the curb. He was making out like he was walking a very straight line, the

way kids do, and the whole time he kept singing and humming. (Page 115).

Holden notes that the childs parents pay no attention to him. To Holden this

child represents innocence and youth unspoiled by adult immorality.

Holden wishes to serve humanity by safeguarding the innocence and purity

of children, by protecting them from the evils of life. His little sister,

Phoebe, asks him what he would like to be and he answers

I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of

rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobodys around - nobody big, I mean

- except me. And Im standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to

do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if

theyre running and they dont look where theyre going I have to come out from

somewhere and catch them. Thats all Id do all day. Id just be the catcher

in the rye and all. I know its crazy, but thats the only thing Id really

like to be. I know its crazy. (Page 17)

From this quotation one can see that his role is completely selfless and humane

the beneficiary of his good deeds would be society at large, not Holden

Caulfield. He sees himself as the savior of children, of innocence and basic

human dignity. What ultimately drives Holden mad is the realization that he

cannot single-handedly eliminate the corruption and vulgarity of the world.

When he understands that he must redefine his purpose in life and shift the

focus of his good intentions to those areas where he can accomplish good, he is

able to pull himself out of the despair and set forth a new path in life.

Holden is torn between the desire on the one hand to grow up and to

adjust and on the other hand to stay a child, living in a world of security

and innocence. He has perceived adulthood as a fallen condition characterized

by evil, falsity and betrayal and so has tried to evade it by dreaming of

retreating to the woods, living in isolation - even dreaming of dying. However

in chapter 5, when Holden rejects his desire to prevent Phoebe from reaching

for the gold ring, it signals his coming to terms with his inner conflict.

Through the example of Phoebe, he begins to be restored to a belief in life -

to accept that living connects both pain and joy, beauty and ugliness. Holden

realizes that risks must be taken if one is to grow The thing with kids is,

if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say

anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but its bad if you say anything to

them. (Page 11).

Throughout the novel, The Catcher In The Rye, and with the information

stated above, one can clearly see that the title is relevant to the story.

Holden Caulfield wants to be a Catcher in the Rye. He feels a need to save

all children from the corruption and immorality that is found within society.

He wishes to aid mankind by protecting the innocence and purity of children.

Holden tries to do this by protecting children from the evils of life, as

symbolized by the cliff. He believes that if he could save the children and

their purity of heart then he would be helping society enormously. He realizes

though that he cannot solely do this, and redefines his purpose to something

more approachable. He now understands that maybe falling isnt that bad after

all, and that one must take risks if one is to grow. When he makes this

decision he rejects the role of catcher and in addition affirms his own

acceptance of his evolving maturity.

We see Holden as a constant character. As a person who refuses to

accept reality and tries as much as he can to grasp childhood. He wants to

become patron of the children in order to protect their purity and

innocence.

And as a final remark I would like to say that when we are honest

we can see within ourselves suppressed elements of the forces operating

within Holden Caulfield, and because of that I would recommend this thought

provoking novel as a fascinating and enlightening description of our human

condition. However, beware ... for that very reason it is not comfortable

reading.

People tend to get mistreated because of what they did and they get punish for it physically and mentally. Regardless if they try to get away, the shame still stays with them wherever they go. Each place has its own rules and justice. In the forest where everything is wild, unlike the forest, the city of Boston is civilized. In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the forest represents freedom and wilderness, and the town represents oppressions and justice.Pearl is Hester and Minister Dimmesdale child, she's "that little creature, whose innocent life has sprung…out of the rank luxuriance of a guilty passion." Hester and Minister Dimmesdale committed adultery because of temptations. Temptations are hard to fight and so they both gave into that temptation and Pearl is the consequence. Pearl and her mother lived in the forest with no rules and regulations. She turns out to be unmanageable, forcing Hester to let her do what she wants. Eventually, Hester [is] ultimately compelled to stand aside, and permit the child to be swayed by her own impulses. Hester gave up on controlling Pearl so she just let her have her ways. Pearl shows a love of mischief and a disrespect of authority, which reminds Hester of her own sin. Pearl lacked the respect for "human ordinances or opinions, right or wrong," and for the social rules. She speaks her mind and isn't afraid to hold back anything. As an innocent child, free from the restriction of organized systems, Pearl is able to understand the interpretation of human experience. Pearl and her mother was excluded from the circle of "respectable" society, so every time they walk she finds herself being surrounded by the curious children of the town. Having been scorned by the Puritans all her young life, Pearl is furious when other children approach her, going so far as to throw stones and screams at them. She has no social skills and no interaction with other children. The Puritans punished her mother by making her wear the scarlet letter, so pearl is the living version of the scarlet symbol. The forest has made Pearl into a rebel child, and the town made her into a person full of hatred.

Hester Prynne, a young woman of the community of Boston, has been found guilty of adultery, and she has been sentenced to wear her "sin by a scarlet letter". The Puritan belief is "that sin not only permeates our world but that it should be actively sought out and exposed so that it can be punished publicly". Exposing sin is meant to help the sinner and provide an example for others, but Hester punishment only gave the townspeople a chance to convince themselves of their own sins by criticizing her as loudly as possible. Rather than seeing their own sinfulness in Hester, the townspeople see her as someone whose crime outweigh their own sins. She had to face many of the cruel-faced women of Boston who thinks her punishment is not enough and instead she should be sentence to death or have a branded A on her forehead. For every crime a person commits there are consequences to it and Pearl is the consequence of Hester's crime as the town people see it. But to her, Pearl is her "mother's only treasure". Everything was taken away from Hester, her pride and dignity. She has nothing left but her daughter.

The men who sit in the judgment "had no right" to meddle with a question of human guilt, passion and anguish. Everyone has sinned before, so they don't have the authority to judge Hester. No one has the right to judge Hester except God. After her imprisonment has ended, she's free to go anywhere but she does not leave Boston; she chooses to move into a "small thatched cottage by the sea, on the outskirt of town". This shows that Hester does not need to run away or live a life of lies in order to resist the judgment against her. In the forest, where she has her own privacy and her own freedom to do whatever it is she wants. Everything she does isn't being watched or being judged for. Hesters social life is basically eliminated as a result of her shameful history. She is treated so poorly that often preachers will stop in the street and start to deliver a lecture as she walks by. Even though Hester is not a Puritan, she still accepts her punishment. The town people have made her into a stronger person, and the forest has given her, her independence.

Minister Dimmesdale is a devoted servant of God. But yet he committed adultery with Hester Prynne and is the father of her little girl, Pearl. He is seen as the most respective in the community, and people would never think that he would commit such a sin. He "concealed" his "sin" and that had tormented his conscience. He doesn't want to loose respect of his community so he has to hide it and live a life of lies. Instead of confessing his sin, he punished himself by whipping himself till he bleeds. He lived a deceiving life because he doesn't want to admit that he sinned against the Puritan God whom he serves. He's a weak man who can't take the humiliation and punishment for his crime that Hester had faced which he committed with her. Hester chooses to meet Dimmesdale in the forest where it is a place of privacy and intimacy. It is "wild" and "natural", excluded by any man rules or code. Hester and Dimmesdale crossed the line between two worlds, the codified Puritan town and the "wild" and "natural" Indian settlement, where they are able to express their love for each other without anyone knowing, the only one that knows is the trees. He faced the decision of being a good Puritan or being a good follower of God. He chose to be a good Puritan and hid his shameful sin from everyone, but yet he tortured himself to make him feel less guilty.

Hester, Pearl, Minister Dimmesdale were all treated differently in the town, but it was in the forest where their secrets were hidden. It was a sacred place for them to show their true individuality. In the town, where they have to follow the rules, they were treated like prisoner; where in the forest where they were all treated with liberal

The Death Penalty is one of the most effective ways to keep dangerous criminals from committing crimes. Every time the death penalty is applied to a person, the risk of more people murdered is reduced. Some people talk about the death penalty as something barbaric, and inhumane thing that can never be accepted in a civilized society, punishment is somewhat the opposite of barbaric since it reveals justice and rectitude. It is not a barbaric act to remove a violent murderer who has injured and killed fellow humans; it is not barbaric to make society a somewhat safer, calm and just place. However, it is important to emphasize that capital punishment should be applied to those criminals who commit major crimes such as sexual abuse, murders, terrorism, treason, or those who belong to the mafia of drugs, the cruel and unjustified killing of animals, among others. These crimes do not have any justification because they are attempting against the life of other human beings. Therefore, the individuals who commit such crimes should receive the maximum punishment. Justice has to rule society; otherwise, society would be full of murderers who will keep committing crimes without the fear of receiving punishment. The death penalty does not have all the support from several citizens in this country as well as others. Nevertheless, there are several facts to support this measurement.

The death penalty is an effective form of punishment. Abolitionists often quarrel that, with the death penalty, there is an unavoidable fact that someone innocent will be executed, but they do not realize that the courts give them the opportunity to prove their innocence by granting them appeals and a fair trial. It is valid to assume that throughout the years many innocent people have been executed. However, many of these people were not proven or found to be innocent. Other people against capital punishment argue that this measure does not deter, as a result, it is useless. It is valid to argue this comment, but it is obvious that the death penalty deters some people from committing murder and cruel crimes and, thereby, society is less brutalized. No one should have any doubt of this. Those sentenced to death have to suffer an unbearable existence until their death, no one can live or sleep thinking that the day of their death is getting closer every second. It has been proven that there will always be people who are more afraid of death than lifetime in prison, and consequently this will keep some from committing heinous crimes. The death penalty is more than justified since it would come to save some innocent lives, and their lives should be more important for us to save than the life of a killer. People against the death penalty can often say, "the death penalty does not help," but they do not realize that it helps by giving a just punishment and to maintain the respect and the dignity of the human life. In addition, it is clearly understood that murderers and violent criminals who are executed are unable to commit new crimes. Every time a serial killer is stopped by the use of the death penalty, before the violence has spread, humanism and humanity wins a great victory and starts creating a brick for a nicer and safer society.

Punishment is needed to protect society by eliminating crime through example. Criminals have to fear justice; this way the number of crimes will decrease. The justice has to demonstrate that if anyone robs a person of his or her life, everyone should feel safe knowing that this murderer will also lose his life. Nowadays, the death penalty counts with the support of President Bush who states "I support the death penalty because I believe, if administered swiftly and justly, Capital Punishment is a deterrent against future violence and will save other innocent lives." If a criminal kills a person, he is taking away the most valuable thing the victim has life. Therefore, the criminal has to pay the price with his own life. When the justice executes a dangerous criminal, it is like a doctor performing surgery. Sometimes a surgeon has to amputate a part of the body in order to save the rest of the body. The law is also forced to perform such unnatural operations (the death penalty). However, it is an operation that, despite all, brings justice, human value, compassion and defense of life itself, to the body of society. Enemies of the death penalty use as an argument "the right to life." Using this argument is contradictory since they are trying to give the criminal the right that the victim did not have. The courts should not accept this statement. If this happens, the "right to life" principle will be transformed to an inhumane principle, to a defender of the criminal, and then this principle would become somewhat enemy of humanity. When a court sentences a criminal to death, it is demonstrating an act of civilization because it is announcing that committing violent crimes is morally wrong and causes dread among those who are planning to commit more evil acts. In retrospect, justice has to put the example and guide the society to think twice before committing a crime.

It is better to prevent more acts that are violent before they take place. It is proven that the death penalty costs more money to this country than a life prison sentence, but it is better to pay that price than to permit the loses of more innocent lives. Assassinations, sexual abuse, and terrorism are crimes that must be punished with all the rigidity of the law. No one has the right to physically or psychologically assault a human being because everyone has the right to be respected. Moreover, since the death penalty is a measure to make people respect each other, it has to receive complete support of society.

She always blames the Chapman problems on Toms wife and defends Tom all the time, but she cares about her grandchildren a lot. Dont you think Im worried too? We feel so help less down here. We offered to come up when Michael first disappeared...-- John Grainger-The private detective Jodys grandparents hired. A retired police officer, he offered little hope to the Chapmans of finding Michael, dead or alive. Still, he used all resources he has to find him, alive or dead. Ill do my best. I promise you that, Kay" 5. The author reveals the central characters personality by allowing us to enter into Jodys mind and know her thoughts, perspectives, and observations on her problems, situations, and people. The author uses first person narration in this story. 6. The setting contributes to the novels characters actions. Jody thought maybe Michael ran away to Los Angeles or New York because theyre big cities where ordinary people can go unnoticed. That idea could have been Michaels intention. Also, the neighborhood where Jody - lives can also be a factor in the novel. People knew Michael and searched every place he couldve disappeared to. The time of the novel also helps because the detective said he couldve been abducted for kiddie porn, which wasnt a problem before until now. 7. The major conflicts in the novel are between Jodys mom and Kay, Jodys parents (external) and Jodys emotions with Michaels disappearance impact on her life (internal). A few minor conflicts are between Jody and her friends. These are resolved when Tom decides the family should go into therapy to stay together and Jodys friends know that shes going through a rough time with Michael missing. As for Jodys conflict, she learned to continue life without ever expecting Michael to come back. 8. The minor character I chose from the novel is Reverend Bruce Richards. I as a kind and knowledgeable, Well, you cant spend the night at Port Authority-. You can stay in my office, & Its not a question of trying too much or too little. Its trying the right things that counts. I chose the minister because he made an impact on Jodys perspective on her situation. While Jody did what he asked, which was pray, be patient, and look up to God, Jody also shared with him a phrase that calmed her down. He exchanged a phrase with something Jody will never forget. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. Reverend Bruce Richards purpose in the novel was to help deeply with Jodys character in understanding her lifes problems ever since Michael disappeared and offer her some hope in her future. . I would recommend this novel to a friend because it deals about problems that are happening in the world-today. Maybe not the exact way it happens in the novel, but the message near the end and Jodys trials with Michaels disappearance are worth reading about

IT.

Christmas Adventure

For some people Christmas can get to be a routine. Families will get together to have dinner and open presents. Many times Christmas can get boring. A good Christmas is one that is different form the rest, like the Christmas that I spent with my family in Mexico. One year my family decided that for Christmas we would take a trip to Mexico, by car. We were going to go to my grandmother's house and spend Christmas there. I was hesitant about going. Even though I did want to see my family there, I knew that the trip meant driving for a couple of days. This was the first Christmas that I had ever spent in Mexico.

We left so early in the morning that I was very sleepy, and I did not want to get up. It was winter, so it was cold and foggy outside. The seats in my dad's old station wagon were made out of leather, so they were very cold. I tried to sleep in the car, but it was too cold and the heater was making too much noise. We were also tightly squeezed in the car. My dad was the driver, my mom sat on the passenger side, and my three sisters, my three brothers and I filled the back seats. I could smell the coffee that my dad was drinking. It left a pleasant aroma in the car. This was just the beginning of my trip.

We drove the whole day, making a few stops for food and gas. We had no idea how long it would take us to get there. That night we rented a motel room with two beds, and that's where we spent the night. It was hard to sleep in there, because the motel was alongside the road, and I was able to hear each car that went by. We got up very early the next morning to continue driving. That day was very hot, and there was no air conditioning in the car. We stopped along the road to take pictures, to eat, and to stretch. It would get very boring sitting in the car for long periods of time. We played games and sang songs to entertain ourselves. We drove through the desert for about eight hours. My little brother kept asking "Are we almost there?" My dad rarely spoke while he was driving. He drank his coffee and concentrated on his driving. That second night we spent the night in the car, because there were no motels, and my dad was too tired to keep driving. My dad just pulled into a gasoline station and parked the car. We all tried to sleep the best we could. My mom rarely slept. She would stay awake watching over us. It was a good thing that my mom stayed awake that night. While we were all sleeping, she noticed a man that was trying to take down the luggage that we had on top of the car. Everyone woke up when my mom screamed. That also scared the man away. We continued driving after that. It took about ten more hours to arrive at my grandmother's house. We were all relieved that we had finally gotten there. We didn't have to sit in the car any longer, and now we had a comfortable bed to sleep in. The trip took two and a half days.

After arriving, immediately I felt at home. My grandmother's house was made out of old faded bricks. She had a beautiful garden with many kinds of flowers and three bird cages. The birds kept chirping as if they were happy to see us. The house seemed huge, since she lived by herself. The first thing I noticed when I walked inside was the red and green checkered floor. I got to meet new relatives, and I thought everyone was nice. My grandmother's neighbors also came by to greet us. It was a couple of days before Christmas, so my grandmother had her nativity set displayed with lots of blinking lights. I was happy to be there.

When Christmas came, we were all anxious to celebrate and have a good time. That morning my mother and grandmother got up early to start cooking. Later on my aunts stopped by to help out. Meanwhile my brothers, my sisters and I went out to walk around. By the evening, many relatives had shown up. There was plenty of food, as though we were going to feed the whole neighborhood. There were plates full of tamales all stacked up, a bowl of posole was in the center of the table, several kinds of pasta salads were spread across the table, and there was also barbecued chicken. The dessert table was also filled with sweet tamales, and little squares of chocolate candy. We all ate, and enjoyed each others conversations. There were no presents, which we were used to, but that made no difference. Nobody even mentioned presents. Outside we got together with the neighbors to break pinatas. The colorful pinatas hang up high from a tree, and the children would go up to hit it. A wood fire kept us warm. The men and women gathered around the fire, while the rest of us played and danced. It was the best Christmas that I had ever experienced. Everyone stayed up very late. The next day I was tired from all the running around and dancing the day before. I got up late, wishing that next year we would be back again for Christmas. We celebrated New Years the same way, with lots of food, and lots of people. The days went by fast, and before I knew it we had been there for three weeks. It was time to come home, time to go back to school, time to go back to our daily routines. It was time to face reality.

Spending Christmas vacation in Mexico with my family was the greatest adventure of my life. The time seemed short, even though it lasted about four weeks. One week was spent in the car, driving to and from Mexico, and three weeks were spent in Mexico. From this experience I learned that Christmas doesn't have to be the same every year. Going to different places for Christmas and meeting new people can be a pleasant experience.

The body shop international PLC

Situation Body shop was built not as a profit generating entity but as an organization to make a social change in the world; ethics and social concerns formed the backbone of this company. The case questions it was still true with the body shop and refers to how the company had deviated from its original path of ethics.

Anita Roddick started the Body shop in London in 176 and by 177 it had a number of shops in London. The BSI adopted a very different approach to business and was not like any of the other Cosmetics firms. BSI believed that ads created needs that didn't exist and so none of the BSI products were advertised. It was against using testing products on animals and supported various social groups from PETA to groups supporting the Kurds, Tibetans etc. By 11 it had expanded to the US and had around 40 shops in various metropolitan cities. Both in the US and UK, it faced severe competition but dominated in its niche business of organic or natural products. Financially it had experienced around 50% growth until 10 and then it leveled off. From inception till 11, it was following the "CSP driving the relationship" model. (Fig 1)

BSI realized that the niche of its business would fade if no efforts to strength its brand were taken. Also, in the US market where a number of brands exist it was significant to establish differences in the brand and specific brand awareness. To address this issue, Anita Roddick appeared in an Amex ad talking about her travels in search of exotic ingredients. From 16, BSI started piecemeal advertising to push sales. Roddick also published her autobiography, Body and soul, and also released a documentary series, millennium, and donated a large portion of the proceeds for various social organizations and causes. This created a lot of good press for both Roddick and her company.

Issues The biggest issue in this case is the perceived image of a company and the actual reality that it operated in. BSI was painted as a social responsive corporation and meeting the expectations of all the 4 parts of the CSR model but it reality it was failing in almost all the aspects that it had promised to follow through, the testing against animals, no to ads, organic ingredients etc.

The issues started with a British TV new report on BSI, alleging that BSI had sourced materials from suppliers that had recently performed animal testing. This was against BSI's stand, where it only partners with the suppliers who had not done any animal testing for the past 5 years and would continue so in the future. But the biggest controversy against BSI was due to a report on Business Ethics, by Jon Entine. He exposed BSI in a number of ethical issues Roddick had copied the idea of Body shop from a similar store in Berkeley, most of here recipes were outdated, off-the-shelf formulas that had been abandoned by other manufacturers, only a small % of the products were natural in nature and the rest were all petrochemical products, artificial colors, and lots of preservatives. The article also shattered BSI's philanthropic image by stating that between 186 and 1, body shop contributed far less than the average charitable donations for US companies. And around 47% of its ingredients had been tested on animals. This was followed by share prices dropping, large sale of shares by investors adding fuel to BSI's existing financial problems.

In response to this article, Gordon Roddick sent a letter, refuting most of these allegations, to all Business Ethics subscribers. This reaction instead alleviating the situating caused further trouble for BSI. The subscriber's mailing list used was not authorized by Business Ethics but was obtained from the mailing-list company from a third party.

Stakeholders Anita Roddick, Body shop international and the customers who supported its products due to the ethicality of the operations are the primary stakeholders in this case. The employees, the franchisees, all customers and the suppliers have a lot of stake in this issue. The shares were plummeting and the shareholders have a lot of stake. The competitors like Limited, L'Oreal, and HO etc are keenly observing the situation and they definitely have a lot of stake in what is happening with the body shop. The campaigning groups, which were supported by Body shop, other social organizations have some stake. The media has a lot of stake.

Alternative actions

1. The social auditing process is a good move by BSI. The process can be extended by publishing these audits to the public.

. If the allegations of using large doses of petrochemicals and animal testing by its suppliers are true, then BSI should probably take a step back and decide what it wants to be; another cosmetics firm or a corporate different from the other, a corporate with social and ethical responsibilities. This might curtail its growth in the US market but might establish its name as a CSR company and as a niche player in the market.

. The company can change the unethical practices to their original ethical ones and advertise heavily their efforts to change their practices. This might give them some chance to grow in the US. But this would mean that they change their stance on advertisements and agree that it is a significant part in doing business in the US.

4. The other alternative is, BSI can show increased concern for the social environment and prove to be a socially responsible corporate. This might leads to fewer criticisms.

Final outcome The final outcome recommended is that BSI slow down its ambitious plans to grow. Follow its original goals and be a more socially and ethically responsible corporation than a profit generating entity. This would be the best option for Body shop.

THE SHATTERED MIND

In the "Stolen Party", Liliana Heker tells about how a young girl's heart is

broken. Labeling others, based solely on their social rank, creates complications

similar to the ones nine year old Rosaura experiences. Senora Ines labeled her as

hired help instead of a guest during her daughter's birthday party. Stereotyping

groups of people or individuals based on their economic or social class can have

a negative impact on the values and opinions of young people.

Heker makes clear; Rosaura comes from a working class family. Her mother

works for Senora Ines as a maid. Senora's daughter, Luciana, was the one having the

birthday. Rosaura's mother did not want her to go to this particular party. She stated

that it was for rich people only, not for the daughter of house cleaner. Her mother

worked for these people as was aware of the difference of the working class and the

upper class. She did not want her daughter to get embarrassed or hurt by attending

Luciana's party. Her mother new that all the other children attending the party came

from wealthy families. Heker uses this example to illustrate the potential problems

that can arise by mixing the working class with the wealthy (upper class). Most

parents do not want to see their children's feeling get hurt or have them feel

embarrassed. I can understand why Rosaura's mother wants to persuade her daughter

from attending this Birthday party. However, I do not agree on the negative remarks

page 1

she uses in trying to stop Rosaura from attending. She is stereotyping a particular

group of people based on their social class. This type of tactic (stereotyping) used by

her mother is wrong. Her statements about the wealthy, implies that all wealthy

people regard the poor or working class as less important than they are. This is how

racism gets passed in families, by influencing young people with negative suggestion

such as stereotyping others. Young people need to form their own opinions and decide

which values they will use in their lives.

Senora Ines hurt Rosaura's feelings when she classified her as hired help

instead of one of her daughter's guests. I did some repair work at different

restaurants locations for the owner. This man owned many restaurants and obviously,

he had money. Everyone in his family drove a Mercedes Benz. Many of his

employee's were dishwashers, cooks, and female servers. He expected them to

worship him as if he was some kind supreme god. He believed that with the

money he has, it made him powerful and gave him the right to treat the working

class as if they were his personal servants. This man had no respect for his

dishwashers. He often yelled at them in a harsh voice. He was not as harsh to his

cooks compared to the dishwashers. He assumed that the female servers were after

him because of his money. I often saw him flirt with many of them. It appeared to

me that a few of them were due to his upper class (money). Depending on their rank

of employment with him was a factor contributing to the treatment you would get.

I learned from talking to some of his employee's that they viewed not only him but

everyone belonging to the upper class with a negative viewpoints. This is another

example of problems that arise due to stereotyping others.

Opinions about the rich, were quite different between Rosaura and her

mother. Throughout most of Heker's story, Rosaura's mother often would express

her opinion about the rich. Usually, they were quite harsh feelings. My father in law

would often say something negative in the same manner as the mother. This caused

my wife to respond back to his thoughts or comments just as Rosaura did. Often, my

father in law would call my wife a bleeding heart liberal. This was my cue to stay

out of their conversation.

Rosaura kept insisting she was going to Luciana's birthday party despite

what her mother told her. Her mother realized she could not stop her. So she

prepared her dress and hair so that her daughter would have a better chance at mixing

with the rich kids. Especially, since she was the daughter of the house cleaner. This

meant she was from the working class, not the upper class as the other kids are. This

reminds me of the time my father bought me new basketball shoes when I decided

to join. He new I was not very good at playing basketball. However, he figured that

if I had brand new basketball shoes, it might help my self-confidence. He was right.

Even though I was not any good, I had more complements on my shoes than I could

count. This was what Rosaura's mother was trying to accomplish in regards to the

preparation of the dress and her daughter's hair looking it is best.

Rosaura's opinion towards rich people suddenly changed at the end

Senora's gesture with the money, instead of a gift, caused her feeling to hurt.

She could not believe that her mother had been right all along. She had always

defended rich people. She had felt only love for Senora and her family. It over-

page

whelmed her the way Senora wanted to pay her as if she was hired help. In fact,

she wanted to be rich and live in a beautiful palace just like Senora and her

family. This new complication, caused by Senora Ines labeling of Rosaura,

had her reconsidering the statements her mother was always saying.

I can remember when a close friend betrayed me. This caused my opinion of him,

to change. I recalled some other people telling me negative things about him and

I did not believe any of it. However, what he did to me made me stop and think that

Perhaps all those things people were saying about him were true. At first, I was

shocked that he placed a lower value on our friendship than I did. Then, my feelings

were hurt, just like Rosaura's were. The more I thought about it, my feelings shifted

to anger about this. Rosaura might have felt this emotion after having time to think

about it.

Heker's story and my own experiences about the problems that result from

stereotyping others should remind people to think about what they are saying to

others. It could have a lasting impact, especially on young people.
