Sitting in the cafeteria with my not-so-good lunch, I look over to my right and see my friend eating his great lunch with a chocolate bar for his dessert. I ask myself if I should ask him for a piece or if I should try to find some money that would buy me a chocolate bar. I finally get the courage to ask if I could have a piece. He gives me a miniature size piece of the bar. As I lean back in my chair and finish this great snack, I look over again to see if he has any left. He doesn't and now I'm left here wondering if I can get over my craving.

A good snack, and great energy booster, chocolate has been around for a long time. Have you ever wondered what life would be like if there was no such thing as chocolate? If chocolate weren't invented I couldn't have asked my friend for a piece but instead maybe would have asked for some other candy or something healthier. My thoughts drifted to wondering about the beginning of chocolate.

Today we are using words like "cocoa" or "cacao". These two words came from fruit trees called "Cacanate". Chocolate is made from the beans of this tree and was found as early as when Christopher Columbus discovered America. After Columbus found this creation he brought those beans back to Europe and people then made a drink. This drink, made from cocoa beans, was very popular and was known as a "Luxury drink" or a substitution for an alcohol beverage. Some people say that the Mayans found this cocoa tree as far back as the 7th century AD. The cocoa beans were also used as a drink by the Indians and were called xocolatl, or bitter water. This drink was made acceptable to the taste by adding sugar and vanilla.

I imagine you're still wondering who invented chocolate. Well there are two families that are part of the history of chocolate. The first family is the Quaker, Joseph Fry and the Cadbury family. Both families believed that there was a lot of poverty due to alcohol. John Cadbury opened his own business to help those who didn't have a home by working in the business. Through this business the Cadbury's opened a small factory to manufacture drinking chocolate and cocoa. This business began to grow and John Cadbury took his brother Benjamin into the business and joined a larger factory.

While the Cadbury business was going well, it had a sudden change and this was known as the most difficult time in the Cadbury's history. During the 1850's the chocolate business started to be in trouble and the business was going down hill as was everything else. John Cadbury turned his company over to his sons Richard and George due to his poor health. While the brothers were in charge, they weren't enjoying their work and was about to leave the Cadbury Chocolate Factory to work in other jobs. The business survived after the brothers dedicated themselves to fixing the problem and soon everything worked out.

The Cadbury brothers started with the first few boxes of chocolates, they produced fancy boxes with cut-out stickers for the kids. Richard Cadbury took a lot of time to design boxes and some of his design still exists today. Richard used his own children as models or flowers and scenes from holidays for the design of boxes. He first introduced his boxes to the British and soon these boxed chocolates helped the business out because they became so popular.

Milk chocolate was made by the Cadbury family in 187 and is the most popular type of chocolate there is today. By 11 it was the Cadbury Company named their product Milk Chocolate and was known as the "Brand Leader". There are more than 50 million bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk sold today.

Although the Chocolate bar was made by the Cadbury family, the history of chocolate itself was started by a man named Joseph Fry. Joseph Fry was a physician who made chocolate in his apothecary shop and made the first milk chocolate bar. After Joseph Fry died in 180, his son Joseph Storrs Fry took over his fathers shop and his son joined the sons of John Cadbury and they became partners.

In 1847 the first chocolate bar was invented. The great-grandson of Joseph Fry discovered a mix to making this chocolate. He melted cocoa butter into coca powder, along with sugar to create a paste that could be pressed into a mold. This resulted into the first chocolate bar and people started thinking of chocolate as a food as well as a drink. "The Cadbury firm marketed the first box of chocolate candies in 1868". (Quote taken from the chocolate recipes webpage) I never knew that the people who make oatmeal made chocolate. Cadbury and Quaker were friends and together made the invention of chocolate.

A long time ago, the invention of chocolates came in boxes and is still very popular in Fry's and Cadbury's success. In the 10s and 10s, these two families had a sales catalogue with different types of chocolate boxes you could buy for gift ideas. You could buy the "5-o'clock" which were chocolates found in a aluminum teapot, "Antony" which were deluxe chocolates found in a handkerchief box, "Nell Gwynne" which were deluxe chocolates found in a box with a metal ornament on a turquoise centre piece, and finally the "Clock Cabinet" which was a cabinet with removable doors with chocolates inside. Some of the other types of gift ideas found in this catalogue were velvet boxes, cabinets filled with three pounds of chocolate.

There is a lot of different type of chocolate bars you can buy. The chocolate bars bought a long time ago were; "Curly Wurly" which was a long lasting chocolate covered caramel treat. "Crunchie" which is still known today made in 1, it's made with honeycomb with layers of milk chocolate. "Turkish Delight" made with starch to mold to form the center prior to covering it with chocolate. "Picnic" made wit peanuts, caramel and raisons on a crispy base covered in chocolate. "Double Decker" made with a crispy cereal base covered in chocolate. "Chocolate Cream" which is still available today made with peppermint or an orange cream filling surrounded by chocolate. These are just some of the chocolate bars.

Umm Chocolates…. At the moment the bell rang to end lunch break. My friend and I leave the cafeteria and start to head back to class. I had started lunch with the thought of chocolates. I couldn't imagine life without it, there would be no Easter egg hunt, or even a great snack to munch on. I am happy the way it is.

The Great Gatsby

Many people end up disillusioned by the American Dream because of its illusions of hope and prospect of success for the unfortunate. Material prosperity only destroys the true essence of life such as loving and caring for each other rather than indulging in wealth and fame. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, provided a portrayal of the meaningless and empty lives of Tom and Gatsby due to their misinterpretations success versus happiness. Unlike Tom and Gatsby, Nick had a clear view of whom and what he wanted to be which gave him a goal and purpose in life. Tom and Gatsby, on the other hand, were blinded by their material perceptions that they ended up leading foolish lives where neither of them are happy. Nick appeared to be more admirable than Tom and Gatsby because he was honest, possessed good morals, had a clear purpose in life, and was not into material wealth.

Nicks good principles and honesty made him more admirable than Tom and Gatsby because he did not strive to be something that he was not. Nick was a man who prides himself; therefore he did not need to impress anyone. He believed that he was the most honest person he has ever met, which proved that he was very self-assured. It even meant that he stayed true to himself and was a man with integrity. Nick was open-minded and had high tolerance. He was taught by his father to reserve judgments because others might not have had the same advantages that he had. Tom, on the other hand, was narrow-minded which made him a racist, because he believed that white people should stand up before other races take over. Tom had no morals and was a liar, because he cheated on his wife, abused, and disrespected his mistress. Nicks honest qualities made him more honorable than Gatsby too, because he did not lie about his past or attempt to hide behind a façade to impress anyone. For this reason, Nick was more worthy of respect than Gatsby due to his dishonesty regarding his past by exaggerating on his rich background. Gatsby illegally obtained his riches and wealth, yet he did not care due to his eagerness to impress others. It was evident that Nick was more admirable than Tom and Gatsby because he was truthful and had high principles.

Besides from being honest and having good morals that made Nick more admirable, he has purpose and planning in his life which is in contrast to the aimlessness and drifting of Tom and Gatsby. Nick was a part of a semi-aristocratic family. He attended Yale University and moved to Long islands West Egg to establish himself in the bond Business. Unlike Tom and Gatsby, Nick has a career, he read a lot of books, and always work towards self-rejuvenation. He also wants to become a well-rounded man and be true to the words of his father and be open to new things. But Tom was not at all like Nick. Tom had a wife, a kid, and a family to take care of but he totally ignored it all and goes to engage in an affair with another woman. Although he had unlimited money, he is not happy. Tom and his wife only stayed together because they wanted to keep reputation and wealth when neither of them loved each other. Gatsby had hopes and goals but they were unrealistic. His dream to impress his lover, Daisy, by amassing great wealth, driving a fancy car, and buying a prestigious home was considered a pathetic goal. He put all his energy into an impossible dream that was later destroyed by reality. Fitzgerald writes "[Gatsby] stretched out his arms toward the greenlight, and far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling" (Fitzgerald 1). The green light served as a driving force for Gatsby to win daisy back. But Gatsby should have known that money alone cannot "buy" Daisy because she would have never left her rich husband. Gatsby prove to be very weak because after he has won Daisy's heart Gatsby admits that he no longer has a goal or purpose in life. Fitzgerald writes "[Gatsby] wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was"(Fitzgerald 111-11). Fitzgerald implied that the only time Gatsby felt happy was when he was pursuing his dream. This shows how Gatsby was never really true to himself rather spent most of his life trying to impress someone else. It was only Nick that had a clear view of what he wanted to do with his life which made him more admirable than Tom and Gatsby.

Buy cheap The great gatsby term paper

Nick had a clear purpose in his life and was content with it. He did not value material wealth as much as Tom and Gatsby did which made him more admirable than them. Both Tom and Gatsby were unable to see how money corrupted people because they believed that wealth meant happiness. Tom was only interested in drinking and having fun or engaging in a sexual relationship another woman. He was so rich that he had a lot of time on his hand to develop these intolerable behaviors. Tom did not know about responsibilities because he had never really had to work hard since he inherited all his wealth from his parents. He is born to wealth and class but has no capacity to truly love because money overpowers everything. Like Tom, Gatsby yearns for material wealth as well and works to build his status through illegal acts. Gatsby was never satisfied with his true identity so ever since he was seventeen he sought to change that image not knowing that there were more valuable things in life than money. Gatsby throws elaborate parties in which he doesn't participate, create impressive library filled with real books that are never opened or read in order to show off his success. Gatsby needed the validation from other people in order to be happy. Both Tom and Gatsby believed that you needed wealth and status in order to be respected or to be happy. Nick, on the other handed, was a well-to-do man. He did not need anyone to validate his success. He had a career, he works hard at Probity Trust, and studies books on investments and securities; unlike Gatsby who never opens a book in his library and Tom who bounces back and forth with no real direction in life. Nick is more admirable than Tom and Gatsby because he does not have misconceptions of wealth and happiness.

Its obvious to see that money corrupts everything even people like Gatsby who wanted to be rich for someone else. And how money makes people lose all their good human qualities and become meaningless beings who are depraved of love and care. Nick was the only person who was not stripped of his humanity because he remained honest and caring. And because he had a purpose in life and knew that there were more important things in life then material possessions.

Abstract

There are several types of weight-loss programs available to the overweight population. Choosing the appropriate diet can be a challenge. There are self-help programs, online programs, clinical programs, group programs, and weight-training programs, just to name a few. There are as many differences in these weight-loss programs as there are similarities. The ultimate choice is completely up to you. One has to find what works for them and their current lifestyle. Lifestyles can involve choices that you make in order to lead a healthier more fulfilled life. Making the step towards a healthier lifestyle is a commitment that can only come from within.

Battling the Bulge and making it a Lifestyle

Welcome to the new millennium! Since the battle of the bulge is still on the rise, so is the search for the latest and greatest fad diets! All of us are asking ourselves the same questions. What diet will work for me? How can I loose weight and keep it off? What is considered a healthy and safe way to lose weight? I chose this topic as my personal interest, because I too had these questions, and I wanted answers fast! I wanted to lose weight because I was tired of seeing an unhappy person in the mirror every day. Thus, I took control, joined Weight Watchers, and I am . pounds lighter, and I feel great!

Do my essay on Battle of the Buldge CHEAP !

"A diet is a regulated selection of foods, as for medical reasons or cosmetic weight loss." (http//www.dictionary.com). "A lifestyle is a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group." (http//www.dictionary.com). I really wanted to examine the "book" definition of these two words. First of all, a diet is the worst choice someone can make. The first three letters of the word diet is die! Making a lifestyle choice to eat healthy and to lose any excess weight is definitely a much wiser and more effective decision.

The general public tends to be in agreement that dropping a few of those extra pounds would be a benefit towards attaining a healthier and better quality of life. "There is a dizzying array of diets available today, but which ones really work?" (http//www.msnbc.com/news). NBC Dateline currently has a very interesting weight loss test in progress. They took six 178 graduates from Quincy High School and selected six popular diets and put them to the test. These volunteers want to shed some unwanted pounds before their 5th class reunion this fall. The weight loss programs that Dateline chose were, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Slim Fast, intense exercise, personal weight loss guru, and hypnosis. I took great interest in this Dateline exclusive, because I am currently experiencing success having been a member of Weight Watchers since April 00.

In order to better understand what these volunteers are experiencing, the following information will give a brief explanation of each of their weight-loss regimens. Weight Watchers is a diet that uses the points system. All foods are assigned a numerical value depending on the amount of calories, fat grams, and fiber that they contain. Dieters are given a daily range of points and are allowed to eat whatever they want again as long as they stay within their daily point range. They are also encouraged to maintain a moderate exercise program and as an incentive, they earn additional daily food points that they can chose to use. Participants are also encouraged to attend weekly meetings so that they may share their successes and struggles with the others members. Next, Slim Fast is a diet that requires the intake of Slim Fast products and foods. They are allowed to eat one shake or meal bar for breakfast and lunch. Then a sensible dinner plus three low calorie snacks in between meals. They also recommend 0 minutes of exercise a day. One of the most popular diets available now is, The Atkins Diet. This is a high-protein, low-carbohydrate plan that also encourages dieters to avoid sugar, breads, pasta, cereal and starchy vegetables. Another program is the extreme exercise program. It is a replica of a military boot camp. This program involves long, usually grueling workouts to lose weight and achieve optimum fitness levels. The next program is hypnosis. This one imprints new patterns on the subconscious mind. It helps the dieter break themselves out of their old routines. And finally, there is the Jorge Cruise weight-loss program. Mr. Cruise is a diet coach who offers a three-step weight loss program online. The program requires participants first to make a decision to lose weight, second, follow a daily exercise routine, and third to include more omega fats in their diet to help decrease their appetite.

After six months, Dateline checked in on their progress. Each one of these individuals had lost at least half of their ultimate goal. Success! A grand total of 00 pounds had been shed before their high school reunion and they have four more months before their big day. This is a very inspiring story for anyone who is contemplating whether or not he or she should take control of his or her weight problem. I truly believe that if an individual wants to make the commitment to lose weight, he or she can do it. The motivation comes from within each one of us. It did not take eating pounds of broccoli to get myself overweight and unhappy. It took an array of unhealthy food choices, bad habits, no exercise, and lack of self-discipline to control my portions of food. We all love to eat. However, if you are someone who desires a healthy lifestyle, then the only one who can change and make that commitment is you.

As I mentioned in the beginning, I have lost a total of . pounds on the Weight Watchers plan. I truly enjoy it. I can eat whatever I want; nothing is taken away from me. There is a diet or lifestyle, as I like to put it, out there for each one of us. I have tried several of the diets Dateline had mentioned, but only one has worked successfully for me. I believe that the biggest key to success in weight loss is you. You are the only one that can make a difference in yourself. "The only difference between FAT and FIT is "I"'. The Great Escape

When he woke up this morning Wolfgang knew this would not be an ordinary day. He can sense something is going to happen today, something big. Wolfgang has been bored lately with his so-called dull existence, so the possibilities excited him. Wolfgang slowly stretched his sleepy body; he needed it to catch up to his very alert mind. He wanted to be prepared, for what he did not know. Whatever it is he would be ready. Wolfgang is a pretty handsome fellow. He has large, dark eyes. His hair is brownish, black and very shiny. Wolfgang is in great shape. He has a sleek, muscular body. He is also a very strong, agile guy. Wolfgang noticed he was hungry. He wanted to keep his strength up. Wolfgang realized it must be time for breakfast. Wolfgang remembered that there is a large black cricket hiding in the far, left corner of his cage. He had been saving him for a special occasion. Well it looks like today is the day!

Wolfgang crept casually across the pebble-covered floor of his cozy domain. He could feel the cool soothing sand under his legs. The large brown rocks up ahead would provide the perfect camouflage for him until he was ready to execute an ambush on his delicious prey. Wolfgang reached his destination. He sat quietly watching the shiny cricket. His mouth watered at the mere thought of how scrumptious the meal would be. Wolfgang does not need webs to catch his food. He uses his strength, speed, and cunning to capture his delicacies. He can not wait a minute longer, the anticipation overwhelms him, and he attacks! The cricket is no match for Wolfgangs strength. He tastes the succulent juice. It is pure perfection.

Write my Essay on The Great Escape

Wolfgang now pleasantly full sits relaxing in a warm, moist, mossy area of his cage. It is his favorite place to be. He thought it would be a fitting place to wait for whatever adventure was coming his way. While patiently waiting Wolfgang he looked around his cage. The clear glass walls gave him a never-ending view of the outside world, and yet would not let him out to explore it. He found this to be a form of slow torture. There is a screen above him. Wolfgang is sometimes overwhelmed by the strange odors that come in through the roof of his cage. The screen is also where his owner, a strange looking creature, delivers him fresh water, along with a wonderful selection of insects every evening. That is usually the highlight of his day, but not today! Something great is going to happen today. Two or three hours passed as Wolfgang killed time rearranging his lair. Moving rocks from here to there. Finally he dozed off from boredom.

Wolfgang was startled awake by the sound of his owner removing the lid of his cage. His large hand dropping in the meals for the next day. He was not as happy to see him as usual. He was disappointed that nothing had happened yet. He thought," this can't be," the end of the day was here and nothing amazing or great had happened. Then it happened! The unbelievable opportunity he had been waiting for. His distracted owner had quickly left the room without putting the lid back on. There was an opening large enough for Wolfgang to fit through easily! Finally an end to his torture, he could go out and experience the world.

Wolfgang started to climb the icy wall of the cage. This was not an easy feat. His furry, brown legs kept slipping down as he tried to go up. He was determined that this tiny problem would not keep him from his final destination. Wolfgang reached the top of the cage; he quickly scrambled over the top of the glass wall. He plopped down on the top of a wooden dresser. He felt scared, exhausted, and exhilarated. Let the adventure begin!

Wolfgang scurried across the top of the dresser. He stopped behind a clock to get his bearings. He was amazed at how all the things he had seen from in his cage appeared in person. He was mesmerized by the loud ticking sounds the gold clock made. He turned to look behind him, and saw another spider! This other spider startled Wolfgang. He had no idea there were other spiders in his owner's house. Wolfgang had no use for this other fellow; he was not about to share his cage, or food, especially not the food! He decided to get away from this guy. He took off to the other end of the dresser. Wolfgang could smell the pine scent of the wood as he looked over the edge. He started to climb down the steep side. This climb was a breeze compared to the glass cage. When he reached the ground Wolfgang was pleased with how soft the carpet felt under his feet. He could feel his legs sinking in to the brown grass. Wolfgang realized he had better keep moving before his naive owner figure out he has escaped.

Wolfgang began to feel intimidated by his surroundings. Everything seems so much larger from his ground view. He carefully made his way across the bedroom floor. There was a tall bookshelf by the unmade bed. Wolfgang started to climb on to the first shelf. It was full of old photo albums, and yellowed newspaper. He noticed a strong musty odor. His nice fur coat was becoming quite dingy from all the dust and cobwebs. On the second shelf he found only books, he moved up to the top shelf where he found his favorite discovery yet. There was a large, green plant sitting on an old tin pan that was used to catch the excess water. Wolfgang realized he was extremely thirsty, so he helped himself to a long drink. He then climbed up the blue flowerpot. He climbed right inside and played in the moist soil. It reminded him of his cage. Wolfgang then crawled up into the plants long leaves. They were great to climb on! Wolfgang even tasted a leaf, and for future reference nothing tops good old bugs.

4

After scaling back down the book case to the floor Wolfgang decides to head under the bed. He figures there must be something interesting there, why else would his owner spends so much time in the bed. He was right there are a lot of things under here to check out. Wolfgang climbs in every old box he comes across. There are deflated footballs, loose change, and of course the occasional missing sock. He came across an old marble collection. Wolfgang found their bright colors irresistible. He wished he could carry some back to his cage. Wolfgang is so distracted by all the amazing things he is finding that he doesn't notice the silent shadow moving toward him.

Wolfgang heard a familiar sound surrounding him. It made the hair on his body stand on end. He had heard this sound many times before while safe in his cage. The sound made by the huge beast with the black fur, and slanted green eyes. Wolfgang darted behind a large storage box with lightning speed. The beast hissed at him, and tried to get at him with an angry paw. Wolfgang now desperately longed to be back in his secure glass cage. He would be safe there!

He had no idea how he was going to get back across the floor, up the dresser and climb back in without being mauled by the crazy beast. The aggressive cat anxiously tried getting at Wolfgang. He made such a ruckus that the owner came to see what was going on. Wolfgang had never been so thrilled to see him as he was right now! His owner noticed the lid off the cage right away and knew what his crazy cat was after. Sweet salvation! As Wolfgang sits in his favorite mossy seat, still shaking a bit, he looks around his comfortable home. That is what he calls it now, his home, not his cage.

In the short story "Why I Live at the P.O.", author Eudora Welty creates a "grim comedy" in which what happens to the characters immediately seem to be funny but in the end cause them to have a destructive ending. Welty borrows from her own life experiences from being raised in the South to develop a story in which a comic character lives their own sad destructive life in the South. Welty "presents the distortions of life in the context of the ordinary… feminine nonsense-family life, relatives, conversations, eccentric old people- and a sharp, penetrating eye for the seams of this world, through which a murderous light shines."(Oates 54-7)

Welty was born in Jackson, Mississippi on April 1, 10. Her parents were from the North; her father from Wisconsin and her mother from Virginia. As a child she was fond of reading and love writing. She had many pieces published in children's magazines as a preteen. She went to Mississippi State College for women for two years but then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she got her B.A. in English. She then briefly attended Columbia in New York. She then returned to Mississippi in 11. After returning to Mississippi, she took up a job writing to society news for a popular newspaper, Later she took on a job traveling Mississippi as a "junior publicity agent" promoting in remote and rural areas of the state. Welty's writing is not easily categorized. Due to her wide range of talent and interests, she writes in both subject and narrative terms and has produced a varied body of work. A majority of Welty's work takes place in the South during the Great Depression. Place is important in a story because the authors felling tend to be associated with it. Since Welty was raised during this time she can give the reader a sense of what really happened. In her stories Welty exposes human pettiness and looks at both side of family and community life, as dark as it may turn out to be at times. "Above all else her stories portray a wide variety of attitudes and peoples living in a recognizable human world of beauty and corruption, tenderness and hate, wonder and boredom. The stories are concerned largely with single moments of personal crisis and move towards and explore the nature of conflict as characters struggle to clarify their choices, to come to terms with themselves and the world around them. Although a strong sense of an ordered community binds the settings of the stories together, it is the dark, inner lives of the characters that interest her more than their public faces. She is more concerned with individual self-deception rather than with social hypocrisy."(Jones 175-) The stories concern is always with the human dilemma. They see deprivation as a human question, not about income and status but about love and loneliness.

The way Southern life in the story is expressed gives the reader a personal look into what happened and how life was then. The story is set in a rural town in Mississippi called China Grove. The family all lived together in the story, Mama, Papa-Daddy, Uncle-Rondo, Sister, and Stella-Rondo plus her new daughter whom sister thinks is adopted. From the story you get the image of a two-story home in a way a little run down. There is no air conditioning; after all it is set during the Great Depression before there was air conditioning. The family has a fun but for the large part you would open the windows to cool down the house. Stella-Rondo has it set in her mind it is cooler with the windows shut and locked. The reader can tell the story is set during the great depression because the string of fire crackers was only five cents. There is a hammock in the front yard and everyone has gathered for a Fourth of July celebration. Everyone wants to get in the hammock before the day is over due to it being "so suffocating-hot in the house with all the windows shut and locked". The family cooks a lot as you can see by when Mama is cooking two chickens for only six people and Sister made some green-tomato pickle. The entire family gets together and plays cards together, which now days everyone would be watching television. Welty uses the "language" of the South to pull the reader in and to make it seem as if they were watching this while you were there. If she had been grammatically correct with all of the language then it would take away from the story making it feel as if it were elsewhere. In the story you got the feeling as if it was a dimly light house or a little dirty and like it was in the deep-south but if the southern dialect had not been used this would not be the feeling.

The characters in "Why I live at the P.O." all have there own personal traits that set them out from one another. Sister has a sense of childishness and is very petty. She is fighting with her family which subsequently leads her to leave the family home and move in at the post office. Throughout the story she bickers and fights with everyone over seemingly meaningless things. Such as the name calling and making a point to take the radio that was given to her, that was previously Stella-Rondo's, in front of the entire family. Sister feels that since her sister has returned home after separating from her husband that her sister has turned the entire family against her. Stella-Rondo has returned home and since that has happened she has lied to everyone about who said what during conversations between herself and sister. She said something to Papa-Daddy who is Mama's father about him cutting off his bread and said sister wanted him to so now he dislikes sister. Stella-Rondo also said something to Uncle-Rondo about the Kimono he wore and Stella-Rondo also told him Sister said she disliked it which then he tore it of and was made at her also. After Sister moved into the P.O. with everything she could lay claim to the family never came to visit. They would not even come to mail a letter. In all the entire family was petty. They argued and did things that they knew would upset the others.

Do my essay on "why i live at the P.O. CHEAP !

This story is a sort of "grim comedy". Welty introduces you to the characters making it seem as if everything is fine and dandy but she causes them to think within themselves to figure out what to do with what the problems they encounter. The characters are tragic figures. The characters have a sense of "dullness, bitterness, rancor and self-pity". Welty's stories offer a wide "range of mood, pace and tone"(Porter xi-xxiii). In many of her stories she limits herself to one town or one state which she is acquainted with. Her characters have a funny surface and community image but a destructive personal life which in the end leads to their destruction. Welty has borrowed from her own experience to create these unique characters.

That a change in self can be brought on by a single external

influence has been a major message that can be explored through

several of the texts studied thus far. The vivacious musician of

Harwoods Prize Giving, the ex-lover of In the Park by the same

Custom writing service can write essays on Change

author, the clothes line of Roberts Sky High and the death of a

loved one in Audens Funeral Blues are all protagonists in the

changing self (or the realisation of a previous change) of each

texts main persona.

Harwoods Prize Giving and In the Park both explore the changing

in self of the principle subject of the poem when confronted by

another person. In the case of Prize Giving, an arrogant professor

is met with mockery by a younger, exuberant woman, at a school

presentation night.

Harwoods use of implicit characterisation gives the reader a

manifestation of the arrogant nature of the professor; arrogance

which is to be the key for his eventual downfall. The poets

inclusion of phrases such as grace their humble platform

and rudely declined show the condescending nature of the professor

successfully, without the need to include the use of an explicit

statement. After the reader is given an insight into the professors

character, we are introduced in the fourth stanza to the persona that

will be the changing influence on the professor. Harwoods

descriptive imagery in the lines underneath a light (no accident /

of seating he felt sure), with titian hair / one girl sat grinning at

him identifies the brazen, and alluring, nature of the young woman.

The professor becomes congested with lust, and, as is his arrogant

disposition, shortly believes that she may possibly lust after him.

This luxuria hits a crescendo when he shakes the young womans

hand, and we encounter the hyperbole felt its voltage fling his

hold / from his calm age and power. It is through the power of her

music that then stimulates Eisenbart to realise how foolish his short

infatuation with this girl had been. The oxymoron sage fool is

incorporated articulately by Harwood to outline this fact. That a

change in self has occurred in the professor is also evident in the

phrase peered into a trophy which suspended / his image upside down

which is equivocal in its literal and figurative nature.

Similarly in In the Park, it is a person who features in the

changing self of the persona, but this time an ex-lover is used to

outline the consequences of a previous change. The atmosphere before

this character is introduced, set from an authorial view, outlines

the personas current state of affairs. She is a single mother (not

stated but presumed) with three young children who have played a

major part in the downgrading of the personas life. The downgrading

role of the children is represented in the their descriptions of the

first stanza. Use of the onomatopoetic phrase whine and bicker and

descriptive phrases tug her skirt and aimless patterns in the

dirt give such representation to this role.

The introduction of the ex-lover in stanza two reveals how much the

womans life has changed since they last met. From the bleakness of

the first stanza, we enter a new stage filled with the interdispersal

of direct speech between the two characters. The woman senses the

thoughts of the man, that he is lucky his life hasnt turned out like

hers (but for the grace of God…). To counter this she talks up

her current situation, the children no longer whine and bicker

but chatter and thrive. After the ex-lover leaves, the admittance

of the mother in the metaphor They have eaten me alive shows that

through the confrontation of her past (in the form of the man) the

woman grasps a greater conception of the dire changes caused by the

birth of her children.

In Sky High by Hannah Roberts, it is not another person which

outlines a change in self of the persona, but an object (a

clothesline) which triggers a memory from the personas youth.

Personification of the clothesline, and its relation to the authors

own change in self since her youth, is one technique incorporated by

Roberts. When describing herself and the clothesline in the first two

paragraphs, we are given the phrases silver skeletal arms

and smooth, sweat damp hands. Comparing this to age-warped

washing line and hands, beginning to accumulate…wrinkles one can

see the dramatic realisation of the changed persona.

Another representation of the changing influence of the clothesline

is the descriptions of the hanging clothes. Where as in her youth

the clothesline was festooned with socks and knickers and shirts

like coloured flags in a secret code, Roberts now write(s) my own

semaphore secrets in colourful t-shirts and mismatched sock. This

suggests that as a child, the author thought that the clothes were

hung out in secret code. Now as an adult she realises the

ordinariness of the practice. The semaphore secrets that she writes

as an adult expose to the reader the question if these are messages

of unhappiness.

The death of a loved one in Funeral Blues is the protagonist for

the change in self of the main subject. Contextually, the poem

features a speaker mourning the loss of the person who was closest to

him in his life. By looking at the descriptive language and in

particular the metaphors used by the author, one can see the drastic

change in self that this loss has caused.

Each stanza in itself can be seen as the stages through which the

persona goes through, caused by the changing influence. The first

stanza brings forth the idea of silence before and during the

funeral. Audens imagery and simple diction in the phrases Stop all

the clocks and Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone give

a clear insight into the current mindset of the persona. He wishes no

sound of life to be heard, except for the muffled drum of the

funeral procession. The second stanza features many descriptive

images representing that all should mourn the loss and express the

same grief that the persona has felt from this change in self. The

author exclaims that aeroplanes are to scribble on the sky the

message He Is Dead. The alliteration of the letter s and the

capitalisation of the last three words in this line both give a

powerful meaning to the image. The third stage the persona undertakes

is a recollection of how much this loved one meant to him. Auden

illustrates this through the use of several metaphors exemplifying

that the deceased was evident in all aspects of his life(He was my

working week, my Sunday rest). The fourth stanza and the last stage

of the slowly depreciating mood of the persona. Due to the changing

influence of the death, the speaker now expresses his feeling that

life means nothing and should not proceed. The earlier request for

silence is now substantiated with a request for darkness and the

thoughts of the speaker are embodied in more powerful images (The

stars are not wanted now; put out every one). One then comes to the

last line of the poem and is hit with the simple but compelling

statement, For nothing now can ever come to any good. The change in

self is clearly defined in this last line, that the single influence

of the death of a loved one has forced the persona into devastation.

From these four texts one can see the impact that a single changing

influence has imposed in the changing self of each persona. In In

the Park and Funeral Blues we see that a changing influence has

caused a severe downgrading in the way that the personas see

themselves. In Prize Giving, an arrogant professor realised that he

too was capable of acting as a sage fool, and in Roberts Sky High

the clothesline brought forward the notion that change has limited

her of the freedom she had as a youth. (Of course, all changing

influences do not have such dire consequences as these.)

Global Warming

Global warming is an important issue for humans to consider and science to figure out. Personally I don't care very much about global warming and have never been active in green movements. The evidence presented in this class is very informative and useful when taking into account the numerous known and unknown causes and cures for global warming. However, my attitude towards global warming is unchanged.

According to the Common Attitudes Toward Global Warming handout I think that my attitude can be described as a mix between several of the listed attitudes. The strongest attitude I have is the Precautionary Principal. It is clear to most of the scientific community that the average temperature of the earth's surface is increasing. I have faith in science; therefore I believe that steps should be taken to figure out what is going on. I don't mean taking an alarmist position and believing that drastic actions should be taken now. There is too little evidence showing that the world will be lost because of global warming. I don't feel a responsibility toward future generations. I think that mankind should go on for a long time enjoying nature as I have all my life. But to blame myself or try to hold others accountable to future generations would be a waste of time for me. I believe that a technological fix will be necessary and has already been employed to help reduce or reverse global warming. Searching for cleaner burning fuels, filters and scrubbers used in power plants, and refrigerant systems using CFC free refrigerants are just three examples of how technology has helped and will continue to help our atmosphere and environment.

The amounts of question and uncertainties covered in this class have been most influential in reinforcing my attitudes and beliefs about global warming. There are too many unknowns for me to get committed and really take an activist position on global warming. The missing CO problem is an issue that helped me determine there are too many unknowns to really care enough to try to make a difference.

Help with essay on Global Warming

The recent rise in global average temperatures is interesting at best for me. I am not too concerned by the possible impacts like a rise in sea level or adverse effects to human health; since I am years old it is unlikely to effect me during my lifetime. I'm more concerned that global cooling will occur due to a massive volcanic eruption. Take the world's largest caldera which makes up Yellowstone National Park. If it erupts again it could kick off another ice age or even destroy the earth forever. Or maybe there will be major volcanic eruptions, like Mt. Pinatubo in 11, more frequently that will help balance the earth's heat budget by, "…inject(ing) sub microscopic particles in(to) the stratosphere..." which can "…act to cool the earth's surface by scattering and absorbing solar radiation." According to the discovery channel the frequency of volcanic eruptions is increasing. This is just another reason I don't get all worked up about the global warming issue.

Climate models are important to us, clearly they are not perfectly accurate but we need to keep trying. The evidence suggests that computer models are getting better as computers operate faster and as feedbacks are better understood. I think that in the future predictions will get better but they will still be predictions which can have unpredicted outcomes. I think that impact studies are good to an extent. They are still predictions and it is important that people who use them to make decisions regarding the affects of climate change on humans and ecosystems understand that impact studies are not necessarily fact. Any decisions to act, not to act, spend or not to spend based on climate models and impact studies should be done very carefully.

I think the U.S. government should force corporations that are known to be responsible for releasing greenhouse gas emissions to reduce them. However, I think it will be difficult to do without any reliable data to prove that the greenhouse effect is the cause of global warming. Corporations will inevitably resist the proposed costs necessary to reduce emissions which may lead to costly legal battles. Without rock solid proof it will be nearly impossible to change the status quo. This is another reason why continued research with climate models must continue. When a reliable enough model is available then and only then can corporations be forced to act. The auto industry is making steps to produce cars with reduced emissions and that use alternative fuels. Unfortunately most individual consumers seem to want the big gas guzzling SUV's. But research is being done that may lay the groundwork for laws that require new vehicles to have much lower greenhouse emissions.

I am not willing to do a single thing to help reduce greenhouse gasses. I race my car and I hate the fact that I have to get emission testing done to my vehicle every couple of years. Race cars that are not street legal are exempt from many of the regulations regarding emissions. However, my street car is also my race car at track events on weekends. There are ways to get around the emission and catalytic converter issue, which I do and have done for the past 1 years. I remove the catalytic converter and emissions equipment which increases horsepower and torque; which every race car driver wants. But when I get the notice in the mail to get the car emission tested I put the stock emissions equipment back on. It is a cost that I have learned to accept but I still don't like it. When my personal liberties are limited by the government I usually do not appreciate it, especially regarding my love for the internal combustion engine and my drive to make it faster, no matter how much fuel I burn. But there is another prong to my beliefs about global warming and greenhouse emissions. For the past 5 years I've spent six months out of the year on a fishing boat in the NE Atlantic. I don't want to see fish populations decrease or move somewhere else because the oceans rising temperature. But in the last 5 years I have fished I have seen the fish populations increase. I believe that the fishing regulations are responsible for that. I feel that I don't want bad things to happen to wildlife because of global warming. On the other hand I may be contributing to global warming with my blatant disregard for governmental regulations regarding emissions testing; very strange. But the truth is that I'm not convinced that the earth's surface will continue to warm indefinitely, if we as humans don't change our ways.

I will be a follower and an individual on the issue of global warming. I don't ridicule any body seriously for their opinions or stance regarding the environment. I just hope that decisions that will cost people money are made wisely.
