The Great Gatsby Success

F. Scott Fitzgerald's detailed descriptions of the landscapes in The Great Gatsby, which use several rhetorical devices, emphasize the theme of success. The rhetorical devices reveal more about this theme as they add style, clarity, and effectiveness to the writing. Both the ideas of being successful as well as unsuccessful are conveyed by Fitzgerald through the different landscapes. The description of Louisville, Gatsby's mansion, and Gatsby's funeral highlight the success that Gatsby achieved.

Fitzgerald's description of Gatsby and Daisy in Louisville show Gatsby's success early in his life. Fitzgerald describes Gatsby's fascination with Daisy in this Louisville setting through effective diction and imagery. The imagery used in the description Daisy's mansion provides the reader with a better idea of what he wanted in his life. The mansion amazed Gatsby with its "ripe mystery about it, a hint of bedrooms upstairs more beautiful and cool than other bedrooms…and redolent of this years shining motor cars." (155). This mansion symbolized the wealth Gatsby wanted in life. Fitzgerald also describes Daisy as being "excitingly desirable," (155) to Gatsby. The words "excitingly desirable" show the priority Gatsby placed on being with Daisy. Gatsby first kisses Daisy on a moonlit evening in Louisville before the war. This kiss signified Gatsby's accomplishment of his goals early in his life. During their time in Louisville, Gatsby and Daisy became very much in love, she "brushed silent lips against his coat's shoulder," (158) and he "touched the end of her fingers, gently, as though she were asleep." (158). The imagery adds feeling to the writing and this helps to emphasize the theme of Gatsby's success in this part of the novel.

Fitzgerald describes Gatsby's mansion more thoroughly than any other setting in the book. The mansion symbolized both the success in Gatsby's life as well as the success he did not achieve. Fitzgerald uses imagery, diction, and figurative language to describe this setting. Imagery is used to describe Gatsby's parties where "men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars." (4). This popularity portrays Gatsby as a successful person. There is more imagery when Fitzgerald describes the inside of Gatsby's mansion, which has "period bedrooms swathed in rose and lavender silk poolrooms…and a toilet set of pure dull gold." (6). The detailed portrayal of Gatsby's home show his success from a materialistic point of view. While his mansion seems to represent the great success he achieved, Gatsby's mansion is later described as a "huge incoherent failure of a house." (188). The words "huge incoherent failure" used together emphasize the idea that Gatsby was actually not successful. Also, Fitzgerald writes that one guest did not realize the "party was over," (188) and this metaphor contributes to the idea that Gatsby's extravagant life was just a cover for his unsuccessful life. The description of this setting is used to show that Gatsby could be perceived as successful in some ways, but unsuccessful in other areas of his life.

The description of Gatsby's funeral marks the final idea of Gatsby not achieving success in his life. Fitzgerald uses strong imagery and a depressed tone to describe this setting. The funeral is a pitiful affair that occurs on a gloomy, rainy day. Only a few of Gatsby's servants, Nick, Gatsby's father, and the man from Gatsby's library show up. There was a "sad procession of cars," (18) on the way to his burial led by a "motor hearse, horribly black and wet." (18). This setting sums up Gatsby's life, which turned out to be quite unsuccessful.

The settings that are emphasized by Fitzgerald add to the theme of success through detailed descriptions and the language and words used. The descriptive writing makes each setting impact the theme greatly. Gatsby looked successful on the outside, but he died without achieving happiness and the settings help to convey the this theme to the reader.

Like many stories, Alice Walkers Everyday Use contains opening and closing segments which are in sharp contrast to each other. The different styles in which the first and last portions of the story represent the significant changes experienced by Maggie and her mother. These changes, brought on by a brief visit from Maggies older, and more worldly sister, Dee.

The opening scene in Everyday Use presents a vivid picture of Maggie and her mothers yard. It also shows the extreme fondness the two rural women have for the yard. Maggies mother uses the word comfortable(88) to describe the yard and likens it to a living room. Also described in great detail is Maggies demeanor. She is depicted as nervous, homely and ashamed(88). Great weight is place on her burn scars, which run down her arms and legs. The mother, also the narrator, sees herself as being more masculine than feminine. She thinks of herself as being tough and impervious to inclement weather. However, admits that she could not look a ...strange white man in the eye(8). It is clear, that both the mother and Maggie are acutely aware that they are far different than Dee. The women seem intimidated and even envious of Dees ambitions.

In the following paragraphs, Dee arrives with a man, whom her mother believes may be her husband. Dee greets her sister and mother with an African salutation. It is here, that the differences between the three women begin to emerge. The mere fact that so little of the dialog that occurs involves Maggie, suggests how quiet and reserved she is. The mother comes off as passive and submissive, especially toward Dee. She often gives in to Dees requests without hesitation. For example, she agrees to address Dee by her newfound name, although she is clearly uncomfortable with the idea. She states If thats what you want us to call you, well call you.(). It becomes clear that while Dee is eager to take pictures of the place she once called home, she is glad to have moved on to a more civilized life. However, it also becomes evident that she is confused about her heritage. She announces to her kinfolk that she no longer wishes to be called Dee, but should now be referred to as Wangero. She exclaims that she cant ...bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me(). Despite her desire to escape the oppression that her past, she eagerly values the goods that stemmed from the oppression. A set of handmade quilts is just such an example. Dee expresses an interest in the ancestral quilts that have already been promised to Maggie. Dee feels that Maggie is not worthy of the quilts because Maggie will surely put them to everyday use, whereas Dee would display them. It is the debate over the quilts that serves as the transition to the closing portion of the story.

After listening to Dee offer several rather demeaning reasons as to why Maggie is not deserving of the quilts, the mother experiences a sudden urge to rebel against her eldest daughter. She takes the quilts from Dees clutches and gives them to Maggie, in a sense dismissing all of Dees accusations. The act of ripping the quilts from Dee and dumping them into Maggies lap liberates the two. It is an exclamation of their comfort with their place in the world. Maggie is clearly taken aback by her mothers actions Maggie just sat there on my bed with her mouth open.(4). After Dees exit from the scene a sudden and new mood is set. Now Maggie is describe as smiling. The mother describes the smile as ...a real smile, not scared.(5) This is in sharp contrast to the timid and sheepish girl in the opening scene. Next the two women sit and enjoy there time outside in the yard, where the story first began.

American Jet Industries is a company that deals with sales of airplanes and aircraft parts. Many people have assumed that the atmosphere within the company is that of a slow passed, peaceful, High technology working facility; however, this is a misconception that many people have when they are not introduced to the industry correctly.

The aircraft industry is a fast paced industry, where it requires, not only the sales persons' full attention, but also the use of all its talents and abilities to get the sale and complete the transactions.

Competition is so high in the industry that, if the sales person waits a couple of hours to make a decision of whether to purchase material to supply the airline or not, the material could have been sold and taken out of the market by another competitor. Depending on the aircraft that needs the material, the material could be so scares, that if there is any surplus in the market, it could get sold/purchased before anyone else has the opportunity to contemplate the purchase. One example of this is that of today. Our company went to locate that a customer in Europe needed. When we accessed the system to try to locate the item, we found that only one company had that part in their inventory. When we went to allocate the material, the vendor advised us that the material had been sold and shipped to a competitor. Unfortunately, since our company waited two hours to begin its allocation, the competition located and purchased the material. The good thing about this is that the material sold was being offered at a higher price than that of the manufacturer, so we contacted the manufacturer and were able to allocate the only one they had for a cheaper price.

The culture of the company is also an interesting point to introduce. Within the company, there is a competitive, stressful, relaxing, understanding, and complex culture. As stated previously, the company strives to be a top competitive in the industry. This produces a competitive atmosphere that creates much stress and anger within the teams. On the other hand, in other departments, such as the accounting department and the quality control department of the company, seems to be a relaxing atmosphere. Their jobs do not have to deal with sales and reaching sales goals. Therefore, their only concern is to make sure that the money comes in from the customers and that the material is in good shape. If that is not happening, they hand the problem to the sales manager for control and resolution.

The last observation is that of the technology of the company. Many people have had an impression that a small computer and a fax machine is the only thing needed to be able to accomplish sales. While that theory is correct, other points need to be considered when thinking about this. Some points to consider are those of the airline needs and standards. 0% of the airlines require the company to have certain programs where it facilitates requests and orders for them. So, if the company did not have those programs that require state of the art technology, they would not be able to receive requests and orders. American Jet Industries has spent thousands of dollars to obtain the necessary equipment to be able to comply with the airlines' needs and be able to compete at a high level with the best. One of those programs is that of Quantum Controls. That program is capable of researching the market and locating material needed. It is also capable of receiving messages via email and fax and also able to send emails and faxes without the need to purchase any additional software or hardware. Most airlines use this system to access their vendors and send requests to them and also to receive answers and send orders to their vendors.

In other words, American Jet Industries must be able to show the airlines that it is able to meet any of their requirements to get business from them. Whether it is meeting their quality control standards, their accounting needs or procurement needs, American Jet Industries is able to show its customers that it is a serious competitor and comply with their needs

Woodlands Indians of the Eastern Wilderness

The Woodland Indians were the first Indians that the American colonists met. In the

beginning the setlers from Europe thought that the Indians were ignorant savages. But

soon they found out that they can learn a lot from the Indians. Indian ways were valued

Cheap Custom Essays on Woodland Indians of the Easter Wilderness

because they were suited to convert the things around them into food, clothing ,

shelter, weapons, tools, and utensils. There were no stores in the wilderness, so the

families had to make these things for themselves.

Living and surviving in the Eastern Woodland Region

All the Eastern Woodland Indians lived in much the same way. But from place to place

there were differences in climate and available plants and animals. The tribes also differed

in housing, and clothing styles, in food habits ,and in means of transportation. The

Iroquois and certain other New York tribes built the larger long house. Its shape was

similar to that of the arched metal Quonset hut built during World War II. Five to a

dozen families might live together in the long house.

Perhaps the most widely used housing was the bark covered wigwam. Sometimes it

was shaped like a cone and sometimes it was more of a dome. The Indians made a frame

for this hut out of small flexible trees, or saplings. They stuck them firmly in the ground in

a circle, then bent them overhead in an arch and tied them together with tough bark fibers

or with rawhide. Next, other slender branches were wrapped in circles around the bent

poles and tied to them, and slabs of bark were tied to this frame to form the roof and

walls. Space was left vacant for a door and a smoke hole. Platforms inside served as

beds, chairs, and shelves.

Farming and food preparation

The woman planted corn, beans pumpkin, squash, tobacco, and melons in the gardens.

They harvested the crops and prepared the food. They parched, or toasted corn for the

warriors on the march. They also dried corn , squash, berries, meat, and fish for the cold

months. They stewed corn and beans into succotash and made soups of corn with meat or

fish in pottery jars. Some areas offered special things to eat such as in the forest of the

northeast, the Indians tapped the sugar maple trees and boiled the sap to make sugar.

Clothing

Many days of work were required to make the buckskin garments the Indians wore.

Tailoring the garments met cutting this skins with shell of flint knives and sewing them

with animal sinews(cords). At work the women wore a wraparound skirt, the men a

breech cloth. The men usually shaved their heads, leaving only a scalp lock. Their

headdresses were of dyed deer hair or a few feathers. The fur robes worn in the winter left

one shoulder bare.

Cultural and religious practices

Most of the Indian dances and ceremonials were healed for religious or superstitions

reasons. By honoring their spirits or gods, the Indians hoped to gain help and favor.

Medicine men or religious leaders danced to seek aid for sick. Hunters danced the deer

dance or the buffalo dance to attract abundant game. Farming tribes staged ceremonials

to bring rain or to make the corn grow or ripen. Certain dances dramatized stories from

the history or mythology of the tribe. Other ceremonies were held when children arrived

at manhood or womanhood, or to initiate them into the the religious secret societies of the

tribe. Although the purpose of a dance was serious, the Indians usually made it the

occasion for fun and sociability. In many tribes there were clowns or other fun makers

among the musicians or dancers. In the evening or at the end of a festival, social dances

were sometimes held.

My contribution to society.

For several years I have been wondering how the world would be if people lived healthier and longer lives, could take precautions against all forms of diseases, or had access to preventive medicines. This dream is the motivating force behind my future career choice of becoming a pharmacist. I love the science of pharmacy, and the fact that I can help a very large number of people with it. The wide variety within the field, and unlimited options for growth and advancement make it even more flexible and suitable for me. I am particularly interested in pharmaceutical research because this dynamic field would continually challenge and motivate me to improve, since the world of diseases is ever changing, and new treatments must be discovered at a similar pace to optimally sustain human life.

My passion for Pharmacy was ignited at the tender age of twelve, when I lost my first and closest godmother to breast cancer. She had been through several months of treatment in the best French hospitals, and various sessions of chemotherapy to fight the disease. My family invested so much into her health to ensure that she wins the battle, but she got weaker over time as her body succumbed to cancer. She breath her last immediately after our final conversation, in which she told me her dreams and wishes for me. She commended my philanthropic nature, and talent in the sciences, and then gave me her blessings for success in whatever field I choose to study in the future, or decisions I make. My godmother's death has been one of the hardest things for me to deal with in the past few years, leaving a void and pain within me, that I wish no other person would suffer. It motivated me to participate in cancer research, and contribute all I can to save as many people worldwide as possible, in the least painful or expensive way.

Custom Essays on My contribution to society

I have heard people say discouraging things about Pharmacy, but I remain unshaken for the hands-on exposure, and inspiring work experience I acquired in a 'P-fizer' laboratory a few months before enrolling in college, assured me that I was born to do it. I also attended several seminars and spoke to pharmacists at different functions and events, who gave me a deeper insight into the profession.

I would like to contribute to, or be a part of one of those research groups that would discover the cure for cancer, AIDS, or any of the presently incurable diseases. During my career as a pharmacist, I would also like to find solutions to the most delicate health issues, or health related problems affecting people all around the world. This is my strongest interest because I believe it is fundamental to the World's health. I want to achieve efficiency and access, without sacrificing quality. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which is well known for research, and specialized in the sciences, would help me achieve my goal of becoming a pharmacist through the specialize coursework offered as part of its pre-pharmacy program.

The most challenging issues in studying for the profession, that sometimes make my goals seem way out of reach to me, are some of the pre-requisite courses, especially the mathematics courses that I have to take before enrolling in Pharmacy school. I have several times found myself overwhelmed by the level of difficulty of my present calculus course, but the tutors and school counselors get me back on track with their encouraging words of advice, and help. In my moments of weakness, I also tell myself that 'I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me', a Bible verse I was taught by my Christian parents back in Africa, from where I came to acquire an education that could be of great benefit to humanity.

I welcome the challenge of serving the entire human race, and embrace the chance to make a living from doing what I love the most in a respectable job, while participating in such a dynamic and interesting field. Pharmaceutical research is my future career choice, for it provides these priceless offers in the perfect package, and keeps the human heritage everlasting and ever sure.

Ethics Statement

While working for Allstate Insurance Company in the Accounting Department for over 18 years, I have gone through some Strategic and Social Challenges. The Code of Ethics Policy applies to every Allstate employee including the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Office, Controller, other senior financial and executive officers, and to Allstate's outside directors, and references in this Code to 'you,' 'we,' and 'employees' are intended to include them.

While interviewing my department manager, Eric Mell he shared some very valuable information that was very interesting to me. Allstate's Code of Ethics; "Allstate is committed to operating its business with honesty, integrity and the highest level of ethical conduct. These values are absolute. We must treat every customer, fellow employee, and member of the public accordingly. (Interview, May 00)"

Independent judgment is critical to the performance of your job. To maintain independence, you should avoid any other employment, business dealings or other relationships or activities that could impair independent thinking and judgment.

I believe the purpose of the ethics statement is to demonstrate how Allstate is committed to provide a work environment that is safe and free from discrimination and harassment that may effect an employee's terms or conditions of employment. Allstate has many valuable assets, including its people, property, information, and reputation. It is the company's duty as well as the employee's to preserve and protect these assets, and to use them only in ways, which promote the best interests of the Company.

In today's rapidly changing environment, Allstate's Code of Ethics has changed to keep up with today and tomorrow's business requirements. Allstate is in the business that is built on trust. Any violations of the trust would affect their image and their ability to do business. Allstate's ethical standard reflects each individual and corporate commitment of how our long-term success and our ability to succeed in the marketplace as a great company is determined by how each leader and employee conducts relationships. Allstate encourages employees to volunteer in the community demonstrating that Allstate and its employees are valued citizens of the community.

We as employees are expected to act honestly and deal fairly and ethically in all of the Company's business relationships, whether with its customers, suppliers, competitors or other employees. Allstate's reputation for honesty and integrity must never be subject to question. As one of Allstate's core values, integrity must be part of all business goals and activities, such as developing new customer relationships, creating shareholder value, and enhancing employee relationships.

If no one observed the ethical guidelines this would be a violations of our Code of Ethics, which could result in discipline up to and including termination of employment or referral for criminal prosecution. Allstate will seek prosecutions of criminal acts perpetrated against the company by any officer, employee, or other person. Compliance with this Code and all applicable laws and regulations, both foreign and domestic, is required of all individuals covered by the Code. This is very important to our corporate image and strategies. The Company maintains a number of policies that are designed to assist employees in complying with applicable law in the conduct of Allstate's business.

In addition, if the company has no Code of Ethics policy, this could result in lawsuit toward the company and eventually, cause the company's downfall.

Each year Allstate e-mails each employee a copy of the Code of Ethics, called the Annual Compliance Confirmation. This includes Conflict of Interest, Integrity, Asset Protection and General Provisions. As employees, we must read and sign off under each category stating that we are in compliance with the company's Code of Ethics. Failure to complete the Annual Compliance Confirmation may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. One way I feel this could improve is to send one section at a time, this will give the employee the opportunity to take their time and read without feeling rushed into agreement.
