Torpedoes In the Atlantic

The disaster

During the early months of the Second World there was fear of German bombers would bomb the cities; causing casualties and deaths among which would be children. To make sure the children were safe, the government decided it would be a good idea to send the children across to the countryside of Canada. Bess Walder was one of the children on board. They all boarded a very luxurious ship- The City Of Benares, to go to Canada, it was great and they felt in complete safety when a German torpedo hit their ship. The nightmare had begun, when the ship started to go down. Children were thrown into the lifeboats of which some missed the lifeboats and fell into the sea.

The ones that were lucky enough to land in the lifeboats were so crowded by other children (including Beth) that the lifeboat turned upside-down and when many drifted away or drowned, Bess and another girl- Beth Cummings held on to the boat.

The great tale of courage

Bess and Beth were two of the few children that had survived and they weren't planning on giving up either- in the freezing cold water they still hung on to the up-turned lifeboat with everything they could. They kept each other living, but Bess was thinking about her brother; she thought he must of got lost and died when they were being thrown into the boats- she thought he might have been one of the man that missed, while Beth was thinking of her mother. Bess was upset by this thought, but could only think of her-self now, and staying alive just praying that a ship would come for their rescue.

They were determined to survive even though the water was freezing, it was dark and logic told them that no-one would find them in this massive sea, but they held on to that little bit of hope they had left to keep them going and especially when everyone around them just seemed to give up and let go. They tried not to say anything unless it had to be said and just put all their energy on holding on.

When morning came- there were only four people left that they could see Bess, Beth and Indian sailors (one of which they soon realised was dead), all of which must have had great strength and determination to get through the night! But they were both near death and still they were determined that they were going to get saved and survive.

They were almost giving up, when Bess noticed a small object in the distance, which got bigger as it came towards them- they had been saved! Almost nights of sheer determination and surviving and they were saved freezing cold and half-dead.

The question- is it a disaster/depressing story or is it an uplifting story

After a long thought, I couldn't decide which of the it was, because on the one hand; lots of children have died which is a complete tragedy. The whole thing is made worse by the way that the children were meant to be taken away from danger and put into guaranteed safety, and in total out of 406 people on the ship, a tragic 56 people died, which included 77 of the 0 child evacuees! There is nothing else to say about those deaths its tragic.

Even though the deaths were a disaster, there is still an uplifting story of happiness brought through courage and determination from Bess and Bess. This story about them keeping going, holding on and thinking of not only themselves, but the effect it would have on their loved ones if they died and why they had to make sure they didn't die the whole story about them almost makes you forget that so many people died.

Conclusion

In conclusion to this whole story, I would have to say that even though the story of Bess and Beth had a happy ending and was a very uplifting story, I still think that no matter how amazing it was I could not make up for all the losses of children and adults in this tragedy. But I did think that the story of Bess and Beth did make me feel a lot better about the disaster part of it, because if they had not hung on and kept going, then there would be two more parents/families that would be left with the loss of their children and complete heart-break.

So, overall I did think that it was a very nice, happy and heroic story, but I also couldn't help just thinking about the other families that lost their children. You do not think about what happens to the other families who lose their children because the focus is on just those two characters as is any normal story (you can't have the focus on too many characters or you lose the story). Conclusively it is a disaster story with a side story of courage and heroicness with a miracle ending.

How would most people feel if someone walked up to them and said they

couldnt look at the Mona Lisa or other works of art, or that they

could no longer read certain bits of news because they were to graphic.

Most people would not stand for it. So why do so many people let the

Help with essay on Public Internet, Freedom of information?

government and public facilities install programs to sensor what they

can and cant view on the Internet.

There are many programs that have appeared recently to protect young

and more sensitive people from certain topics on the Internet. However,

the largest portion of these programs not only keeps people out of smut

sites as they are supposed to, but also sites involving legitimate

information because of words in the title. (I.e. Research on breast

cancer and other sites with words that have been designated

Restricted) or disallow viewing of any site that has not been rated through

their system. This may be fine for personal computers where parents

decide that young children might stumble upon more questionable sites.

But when programs such as this are employed in schools and libraries

where people might be looking for this legitimate information it

becomes problematic at a minimum. The government also should not have

the right to take away ours under the false guise of it being for our

own good.

Also there have been attempts to sensor things on a larger scale.

China, for instance, has restrictions on all access to any and all

sites that might incite ideas of democracy and more freedom amongst its

people. Our own government has seized sites on hacking and numerous

sites providing information that could be turned too destructive

purposes. And for now no one objects because of the largely publicized

violent acts of recent years. But the truth of the matter is that this

knowledge is available anyway because so many people have access to the

internet and can post this kind of thing, and it would not take much to

move from this to seize upon ideas that are posted that might be

considered dangerous, after all many literary works have become

censored due to content. Legislation could be passed almost unnoticed

to put restrictions on sites that have ideas that people dont like,

after all that's basically what censoring is, people in high places

finding something offensive and pushing it out as such on others.

Then there is the programs themselves. They are sometimes costly to

develop and largely ineffective due to the massive amounts of

information that is posted even daily online for that which is

considered questionable and more people seek it out to see what it is

that is considered so bad. Also there is the point that many people can

get through the restrictions with ease supposing they have a bit of

knowledge. My school has, supposedly, tried to block access to hotmail

accounts to keep students from accessing email at school though I know

many who have found ways around this if they truly have.

There is also the fact that most Americans, in fact most people in

general, would in all likely hood resent having a babysitter holding

their hand when they go places. However there has been debate recently

as to whether or not such programs should be aloud to be put in public

places like schools and libraries. [Proponents of this say that if they

are government helps to fund these institutions then it should be able

to pass rules over them. But what if someone is trying to look up

information on a subject that has become inadvertently restricted.

Would it not make more sense to leave the institutions to make their

own rules as to what can and cannot be accessed, most people do tend to

try to follow the rules. Especially true if they access it at such

institutions because they do not personally have it.

Again I must stress the fact that large-scale regulation of the

Internet is both wrong and inefficient. People should not just silently

accept what they are given. Write senators and other officials, join

newsgroups do whatever you can to stay informed.

Repeated warnings about alarming security breaches at the nations airports, made by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) whistleblower, have been confirmed by federal government report citing gross mismanagement by the agency that resulted in a substantial and specific danger to public safety. Yet despite claims by the Department of Transportation (DOT) that airports are now safer than they were before September 11, 001, failure to force airlines to disrupt their business-as-usual routines means that inconvenienced passengers still are at risk.

The U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) today publicly released findings upholding allegations made by former FAA security expert Bogdan Dzakovic that the FAAs division of Civil Aviation Security (CAS) had deliberately covered up an elite security units pre-/11 findings that reflected poorly on the airline industry. The OSC concluded that DOTs report appears reasonable about strengthening air safety, but is unreasonable about the personal accountability of FAA officials responsible for the airport security breakdown. That means the report flunks minimum statutory standards.

Dzakovic was a member of the FAAs Red Team, which traveled to major U.S. and foreign airports to covertly test airport security systems, was considered the lynchpin of FAA aviation security efforts. Since making his disclosures, Dzakovics job at the new Transportation Security Agency (TSA) has been limited almost entirely to clerks duties and answering the graveyard shift special emergency telephone where he must wake up someone else if anything goes wrong. Special Counsel Elaine Kaplan pledged to continue investigating the on-going retaliation against him.

Cheap Custom Essays on september 11, 2001

The OSCs findings vindicate Bogdan Dzakovics pre-September 11 warnings that this countrys airports were sitting ducks for terrorists, said Tom Devine, Dzakovics attorney and legal director of the Government Accountability Project (GAP), a Washington, D.C.-based public interest law firm. His early warnings about what could happen were tragically confirmed, at an enormous human and economic cost to this country.

Personal vindication is welcome, but we are not so reassured by recent developments, Devine continued. Both government agencies skipped the bottom line reaffirmed by every whistleblower and witness GAP has interviewed; a year and a half after the /11 tragedy, the airports are not safer. The TSAs changes have made passengers miserable but carefully avoided disrupting lax airline routines. With our nation on the brink of war, this is inexcusable. The OSC conclusion that promised reforms appear reasonable doesnt cut it. The Department of Transportation perfected the art of maintaining false appearances before /11. Hopefully, the Homeland Security Department will get serious.

Devine added Fortunately, Special Counsel Elaine Kaplan is dissatisfied that this valued senior member of the FAA Red Team was not given a role in the TSAs new covert testing program.

Ms. Kaplan correctly rejected the assurances of Admiral James M. Loy, then undersecretary of transportation for security, that Mr. Dzakovic had been assigned to a new position where he would be able to make full use of his talents. Those promises were as empty as the FAAs claims that it was protecting the American people, Devine noted. Bogdan Dzakovics current job shows that, despite the much-ballyhooed changes in airport security, the more things change the more they stay the same.

After finding a substantial likelihood Dzakovics allegations were correct, the OSC, the federal agency charged with protecting the employment rights of whistleblowers, in February 00 ordered Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta to investigate Dzakovics charges that Red Team reports were suppressed.

Although Loy told the OSC that the days of the old FAA Red Team are gone, a vigorous efforts to replace the failed system are in place, Kaplan noted several serious deficiencies in the OIGs report. For example, she said, Loys letter did not address what has been done with respect to those individuals at higher levels within FAA CAS who mismanaged the Red Team and failed to take effective action to improve airport security.

Admiral Loy is right when he says the bad old days of the Red Team are over, said Dzakovic. It has been replaced by a Pink Team that now concentrates on audits handicapped to novice screeners skill levels, instead of mock terrorist raids. It means that my colleagues are gagged from talking with me and picking up six years of lessons learned.

A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a novel about a boy named Gene Forrester and his trials and tribulations while attending Devon School for Boys in New Hampshire. It is set in the time period of World War ; therefore the book is reminiscent of the war. There are many symbols in the novel that represents aspects of the war and of mankind itself. The three connected symbols in A Separate Peace reinforce the innocence and evil of the main characters, Finny and Gene.

Beside the Devon School flow two rivers on opposite sides of the school, the Naguamsett and the Devon. The Devon provides entertainment and happiness for Gene and Finny as they jump from the tree into the river and hold initiations for the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. Finny, Gene, and their friends use the Devons warm water to play in during the carefree summer session. The Devon brings out Finnys carefree character and personality when he jumps from the limbs of the tree. Not one Upper Middler in Devon has ever jumped from the tree; Finny becomes the first. After surfacing, Finny says that jumping from the tree causes the most fun he has had in weeks (16). However, the Naguamsett and the Devon completely contrast. When Gene and Finny emerge from the Devon, they feel clean and refreshed. However, Gene describes the Naguamsett as ugly, saline, fringed with marsh, mud and seaweed (76). When Gene starts a fight with Quackenbush and falls into the Naguamsett because Quackenbush calls Gene a maimed son-of-a-bitch, Gene surfaces from the Naguamsett feeling grimy, dirty and in desperate need of a bath (80, 86). Much like the clean, refreshing water of the Devon and the ugly saline water of the Naguamsett, Genes carefree attitude of the summer session vastly differs from the angry, confused attitude of the winter session.

Likewise, the two sessions, the summer and winter, give a different sense of feeling toward school and life at Devon School. The summer session allows Finny to use his creativity. Finny invents Blitzball and founds the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. The students let their carefree attitudes flow during the summer. Finny and Gene willingly break the rules to have fun during the summer by skipping class and going to the beach. Finny also wears the school tie as a belt to the traditional term tea. Gene feels that Finny finally won't get away with it, but Finny manages to talk his way out of it easily (7-8). However, the winter session causes a sense of strictness. The sermons now exhort the thought of what we owe Devon, but in the summer the students think of what Devon owes us (7). The masters and class leaders try to enforce continuity, but Gene realizes that resurrecting the summer session becomes impossible. Finny is not in school, no longer shall the students have their carefree attitudes, and the class officials and masters now enforce the rules at Devon. Gene becomes like the winter session by saving a cold blast for the enemy. The winter lives to destroy the warmth of the summer and does so by unleashing an unpredictable frigid blizzard. Likewise, Gene destroys Finny by releasing an uncontrolled jouncing of the tree limb.

Nevertheless, the peaceful time and the wartime clearly display the innocence of Finny and the evil of Gene. During the peaceful time, not one student thinks about a war. Like the summer session, the rules do not exist, and the students minds run wild with carelessness. Finnys imagination and creativity explode during the peaceful time with inventions like Blitzball and the founding of the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. However, the war, like the winter session, brings about confusion and hostility. Students like Leper and Quackenbush begin thinking about enrolling in the army. Even Gene considers enlisting until he realizes that Finny needs him. Finny cannot handle the changes during the winter session. When Gene explains to Finny that a war is occurring, Finny wonders, Is there? (104). Finny refuses to believe in the war when Gene explains that the war comes before sports. Finny comes to the conclusion that old fat men in Washington, D.C. make up the war to trick the people, and only the fat men understand the trick.

Cheap University Papers on A Separate Peace

Although there are many more symbols in the novel, these three were heavily brought out. They show that mankind has two sides, good and evil. They also show that sometimes mankind cannot control the evil side, and rivalry between friends mostly leads to destruction. The two rivers, the two sessions, and the two settings reinforce and clearly display the innocence of Finny and the evil of Gene.

Oedipus a Tragic Hero

According to Aristotle's in the Poetics, certain characteristics must be met in order for the audience to be able to identify a tragic hero. First of all, a tragic hero must cause his own destruction; his punishment must be bigger than his crime. Secondly, a tragic hero must be a nobleman and have greatness or power. Finally the audience must feel sympathy and fear for the hero. I think based on these characteristics; Oedipus could definitely be considered a tragic hero. An Oracle told Oedipus that he would kill his father and marry he is mother. Oedipus trying to run from his own destiny decides to move to Thebes. On his way to Thebes, Oedipus kills a man, not knowing that this man he had just murdered was his biological father. In Thebes everybody is excited because Oedipus had just killed the Sphinx and as a token of their appreciation they make Oedipus the king and he gets to marry Jocasta, his biological mother. Oedipus doesn't realize that murdering this man and marrying Jocasta he has just fulfilled the prediction of the Oracle.

First of all, we can see Oedipus cause his own destruction when he starts looking for the person that killed Laius and went he starts digging into his own past. There was a plague in Thebes and Oedipus sends Creon to consult the oracle so they can finally end this plague. The oracle tells him that the plague comes because of an unpunished murder. Oedipus seeks for Teiresias help to find Lauis murderer. Oedipus doesn't know that Teiresias knows who his parents really are and that the murdered that his looking for is himself. Oedipus starts questioning Teiresias, when Teiresias tells him that he is the killer Oedipus refuses to believe him. A messenger comes to inform Oedipus that his father Polybus had died and that they wanted Oedipus to become the king of Corinth. Oedipus is relieved to hear that Polybus had died because now there's no way that prophecy can be realized. The messenger tells Oedipus that Polybus and Merope where not his real parents and he proceeds to tell him what happened when Oedipus was a baby. Oedipus sends for the shepherd after he founds out that the shepherd was the one that gave Oedipus to Polybus and Merope. When Oedipus talks to the shepherd, he realized that he couldn't escape from his own destiny.

Secondly, there are a couple of instances that show us that Oedipus was a nobleman and a man of great power. Oedipus is the son of Laius and Jcasta, the King and Queen of Thebes, his parents where loyalty. He also believed he was the son of Polybus and Merope, the King and Queen of Corinth. Finally the people of Thebes respect Oedipus when he solves the riddle of the Sphinx and finally gets rid of this monster that was terrorizing the people of Thebes. We can see that in different senses he was a noble man and the people admired him.

Buy custom OEDIPUS A TRAGIC HERO term paper

One of the last characteristics a tragic hero must have is that the audience must feel sympathy and fear for the hero. We can see this happen when Oedipus finally realizes that he had killed his father and that the women he has married was really his mother. We can also see this when Oedipus runs to get Jocasta and he realizes that she has killed herself. It is also very sad and tragic when Oedipus takes his eyes out. The fact that he chooses to take his eyes out instead of just killing himself, I think is what provokes that feeling of sympathy and fear from the audience.

In conclusion when I think about that tragic heroes, Oedipus always come to mind first. I love this story because it shows how you can't escape your own destiny. I also believed that according to Aristotle's characteristics of what makes a tragic hero, Oedipus has all of these characteristics. It is horrible the fate that awaits Oedipus and the truth is it wasn't his fault that he was born in that situation. The only thing that he wanted to do was find out the truth of his past and of Lauis killer. Little did he know he was setting himself and his family for a horrifying ending. Oedipus left Thebes with his daughters and he lived blind for a few years before he finally died.

Before we began the initial beach walk, our instructor related some valuable facts about Ship Island. In 16, Camille, a level five hurricane, swept through the island breaking it in two. This occurrence split the island in exactly the right spot, making the East Island lush with trees and shrubs, and Ship Island a place for students like us to enjoy a day at the beach.

During the beach walk, the first thing one notices is the vast difference in sand color. It changes from a deep black to a typical white sandy beach. This unusual feature of Ship Island is due to the production of coal near the Appalachian Mountains, which pollutes the sand and travels all the way to Mississippi! The sand, fine in texture, is fondly called "salt and pepper" sand by our instructor. At some parts on the approximately 100 foot wide beach, the sand slopes downward into the ocean, but on others, there is a distinct break where one has to take an actual step down to get to the water.

One of the things we observed on the Gulf Coast beach was a dead sea turtle that was a Logger, which means its an aggressive sea turtle…though not so aggressive anymore since its dead. Also, many perfectly circular ghost crab holes were seen throughout the beach. These are said to have white/golden legs. We learned that the muddy areas located away from the Gulf were actually a mixture of sand and bird feces (yum). The guide picked up a thin striped hermit crab inside of an oyster drill shell. Another favorite shell of hermit crabs is a snail shell. We also found a Conch shell, but these cannot be removed from the island because they belong to an endangered species. The guide pointed out the head of a hardhead catfish, also known as a "crucifix" because of their resemblance. Nearing the end of the island, we also saw dozens of seagull footprints and of course, there were pesky sand gnats everywhere. Those were some fauna we found besides the crabs and turtles, and the flora included the marshy bushes on either side of the boardwalk.

The color of the water can best be described as a dark brown color. It is definitely somewhat turbid. Closer to shore, one can see that the water is actually a clear green, but that image is ruined as soon as your entire leg becomes hidden in water. At that point, one can't see what is below them on the sandy floor. On the Gulf side, the bottom of the sea is relatively smooth without a lot of shells disturbing our "shuffles." Yet, on the Mississippi Sound side, the bottom (at its deepest twelve feet) is covered with Hermit crab shells and other "delights". As we rounded the corner to the Mississippi Sound, the once rough and choppy waves transformed into smooth crescents. The waves move westward, proving that in thousands of years, Ship Island will one day be in front of Louisiana.

Help with essay on Ship Island

Also, during our experience on the Mississippi Sound, we used an instrument called a Yabbi pump to find the small organisms located beneath the sand. We put them in an apparatus that allowed us to sift through the sand particles. After a few tries my group and I found Yabbi shrimp, worms, and crabs the size of a fingernail! We realized that in order to receive these results, one has to travel out into the ocean, not at the shoreline. Crossing over the bridge, we involved ourselves in a completely different experiment. Using saining nets, we caught jumping silver fish and masses of jellyfish. Previously, school groups caught stingrays while performing this process. I also went searching for sharks teeth in the sand without much result.

The water chemistry data for the Gulf are as follows Dissolved 0 is 7ppm, the salinity is 0ppt and the pH is 8.-8.4. The water chemistry for the Sound are as follows Dissolved O is 5ppm, the salinity is 18.8 ppt and the pH is7.. This shows that the Mississippi Sound has freshwater.

We were asked to pick up trash to help the island remain a clean and beautiful place. I attempted to do the trash pickup but actually found more shells than trash. Sarah found a quarter though…imagine that!

Overall I felt that the trip was a success. It was definitely tiring, but I learned a lot of really cool facts such as my favorite the "salt and pepper" sand. Also not having a test on this was fabulous…give me a report any day.

Romeo and Juliet didn't have a choice… or DID they?

In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, choice plays a big part in the dramatic ending. Even though some of the reasons for Romeo and Juliet's deaths are out of their control, I believe that fate, or chance, is not the biggest reason for their deaths. Making choices brings consequences. There is no over-seeing factor that controls these consequences; and while much of the focus of the story is put on fate, what really plays the biggest part in the story, are the poor decisions by Romeo and Juliet.

There are several instances where Romeo could have made choices that would have changed the outcome of the story. "I fear, too early. For my mind misgives some consequences, yet hanging in the stars, Shall bitterly begun this fearful date with this night reveals and expire the term of a despised life, close in my breast, by some vile forfeit of untimely death" (I. iv. 11). This shows that Romeo knows that there could be consequences for his actions. Romeo is also aware that his family and Juliet's family hate each other. Yet he still goes to Capulet's party, fully knowing what could happen as a result. "Then plainly know my heart's dear love is set on the fair daughter of rich Capulet. As mine on hers, so hers on mine". (II. iii. 61). Even when Romeo realizes that Juliet is a Capulet, he pursues after her. Romeo should have known that both their families would STRONGLY disapprove of them being together, and would prevent them from seeing each other. It would have been just as easy for Romeo to head home instead of going to see her. Instead, he chooses to go to her balcony where he meets Juliet. During this scene, Romeo shows a complete disregard for likely consequences of his actions. He could've been infatuated/love-stricken, or he might have just been immature about his decisions; but by making these sorts of choices, he sets everything up for the problems at the end of the book.

Even though Romeo was the one who woos Juliet, she could have just as easily resisted. "My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early see unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love to me that I must love a thoathed enemy" (I. v. 15). This is where Juliet should've realized what was to come if they kept seeing each other. Juliet, fully aware of the possible consequences, foolishly continues to see Romeo. Marrying Romeo was also a MAJOR decision that proved to be very troublesome. When he wanted to get married with her, she could have simply said "No". She could have married Paris, like her father wanted. "Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here's drink. I drink to thee." (iv. iii. 5). Romeo was not forced to drink the potion, she chose to. She could have run away with Romeo, away from Verona. Not only that but they could have decided to just be honest and tell their parents. No matter how mad or angry their parents got, it would have certainly been better than death. Another possible solution would be for Juliet to leave Verona with Romeo; but by choosing to drink the potion, she brings chance into the picture.

In the final scene, Romeo and Juliet take their own lives. When Romeo hears of his love's suicide, he rushes to her side and kills himself so that he could be with her "Well, Juliet, I will lye with thee tonight". (V. i. 7). This choice was Romeo's alone, nobody made him kill himself. Romeo chose to buy the poison, and ultimately chose that he would rather die than live without Juliet. The circumstances that stopped Friar Lawrence's assistant from delivering his message also helped cause the deaths of the lovers but really isn't the cause of it. The poor decisions leading to this scene put them in the position where chance can come into play. There

were many opportunities for Romeo and Juliet to make decisions that would keep them from this predicament. Even at this stage of the story, the suicide of Romeo and Juliet still could have been prevented. Juliet could have left and lived with Romeo away from Verona. Juliet could have made sure Romeo knew about the plan before they went ahead with it. Yet, none of this happens due to poor decision making. So when Juliet finds her husband dead, she too chooses that she would rather die than live with Romeo "Yea, noise? Then I'll be brief. O, happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rush, and let me die" (V. iii. 174).

Elements from chance, fate and choice all played a factor in deciding the outcome of the story. It's true that things out of their control contributed to kill their suicide; but they made the decision to pursue each other and left openings for these events to happen. So I believe that choice was the real undoing of Romeo and Juliet.
