Central at five o'clock in the morning

Five o'clock in the morning. An awkward time it was, one which many would not have ventured in fear of the unknown. The station was under a guise of darkness, a fearful yet fragile covering in which sight and sound were virtually useless because of the lack of existence. Every now and then a train would rumble past, followed by a cacophonous string of words announcing the next train and safety warnings which in turn were accentuated by the speakers, positioned a few meters apart above the prying heads of many that would fill the station in only a few hours. This very sound and others, echoed through the platform, interposed by none except for the very air which greeted them, slowly killing them as they journeyed away. Despite of the hour, a number sauntered here and there, disappearing into the thick mist that masked the platform. The only tangible was the moon which with its light pierced the opacity like a knife through flesh. It was clearly visible but hovered, lonely above the platform. Undoubtedly, the sequential nature of time had molded Central Station into a tranquil, placid devitrification of lifelessness.

Central Station at five o'clock in the evening

An endless see of men met the eye at Central Station at one of the peak hours which it endured. It stood, full of life, an ant in an ants nest, serving the queen. They would scatter here and there, scurrying about, trying to get the upper hand in the never ending battle between man and time. They cared not about anyone else, as if it was one man for himself as he pushed his way through the crowd to get to their Queen. It was indeed a dysfunctional demeanor, much like that of ants amid an array of sugar. The monotonous voice from the speakers struggled with their tedious travail in a quest to enlighten the public commuters with train times and safety warnings. However, this was to an assemblage of stubborn people, those who were more interested in settling their garrulity then the dissemination that was being issued to them. As a result, the once clear and dominating voice of the platform was lowered to a meek offering of information. Trains came and left with their trademark 'chug-a-chug' while others stayed, rooted in their tracks. The platform felt the strain of so many commuters but labored on to achieve its goal of getting through the day. The tracks screamed in pain as each train moved upon it on a minute basis. The very cement screeched at each footstep. Sight as it were was reduced to a few meters if not centimeters as visual obstructions were many in number. Also many in number were the odors that one's nose would have picked up on. While being lively, a cognation of the very same people who breathed it through their systems, it was a unique sharp scent mostly from the oil used to line the tracks, food, sweat and the cement that covered the ground and ensured that it would provide a safe walking area for public transport users. What a surprise it was, in only a space of twelve hours, a tranquil platform would metamorphosis into a vibrant, lively centre of travel.

Strategic planning has its own language

Gerald Graham

Everyone, it seems, engages in strategic planning. For some organizations, the strategic plan provides zest and vigor; for others it is just a big yawn. What is the difference?

Strategic planning is nothing more than first, deciding what you want to become; second, deciding how you will get there, and third, allocating resources to achieve your desires.

Like most important processes, though, strategic planning has its own language. For instance, a mission statement is a statement of the organizations purpose. It answers the question, Why do you exist? or What business are you in?

A vision statement is a word picture of what you want to become. Vision statements should excite and challenge both leaders and employees. Effectual mission and vision statements are brief.

A SWOT Analysis, (SWOT is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) takes a bitingly critical look at where your organization is strong and weak. It should answer the questions, What do you do better than 0 percent of your competitors? and What do your top competitors beat you on?

The OT part of SWOT is an analysis of environmental trends likely to impact the organization. Some trends will present opportunities. Others will be threats.

Statements of what you want to achieve in the next few years are goals. Organizations should have goals on sales, profitability, return on investment, market share, customer satisfaction, quality improvements, and the like.

Objectives are very specific statements of what the organization wishes to accomplish within the upcoming year, such as increase sales by 0 percent, maintain an 8 percent after tax profit, and so on.

If mission and vision form the bedrock of planning, strategy selection is what gives the plan life.

Strategies answer the question, What do we need to do to reach our goals and objectives? More specifically, should we add/drop products or services? Change promotion? Offer different incentives? Buy a competitor? Sell a division? Change hiring practices? Rearrange finances? Answers to these (and similar) questions determine whether an organization soars or flounders.

Although the planning process seems simple enough, some leaders step in big planning potholes. The more common planning mistakes are

Too general -- Plans that produce vague statements become nothing more than muddy scum. If you cannot measure what you want to become, you cannot manage your way through the inevitable, tall and uncut challenges.

Too much staff influence--Committees, task forces, and staff planners may be helpful in gathering data and facilitating processes. They must not, however, create the plan. As a successful manager said, Those who execute and develop the plan must be the same people.

No follow-up -- This is the hard part. Effective follow-up requires regular (monthly or more often) check-up sessions to compare measures of what actually happened against the plan. And if you are off plan, figure out how to catch up.

Inconsistent budgeting -- When budgets fight with plans, budgets always win. Planning requires allocation of resources. Planning comes first. Budgets must follow plans.

A good plan (place a lot of emphasis on the good.) is the best tool that managers have for managing their day-to-day operations.

Check the following statements that are true of your planning efforts

Line managers create the plan

The plan has specific measures

The plan is communicated to all

Regular, follow-up meetings occur

Budget follows the plan

The plan is written

Many people participate in the plan creation

Planning is an ongoing process

Plans continue to evolve through the year

People get excited about the plan

If you do not check 10 trues, consider modifying your planning process.

Ignorance is bliss a simple, yet brilliant phrase commonly overlooked in today's society. Is ignorance really bliss? In the plays Gross Indecency The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, by Moises Kaufman, and Wit, by Margaret Edson, show how this saying can and cannot be true. Kaufman uses the brilliant mind of an artist to show how his ignorance due to his superior intellect subsequently leads to his destruction, while Edson uses the character of a brilliant English professor dying of cancer to show how her above-average knowledge of the world leads to an exaggerated mental struggle before her death.

Gross Indecency uses the character of Oscar Wilde to show how his unique and brilliant understanding of human interaction leads to the destruction of his life as an artist and as an important pillar of society. Wilde falls under public scrutiny when he is tried for the crimes of gross indecency with young male members of the English society. The public views these relationships very literally, and begins to label Oscar as a homosexual; to him a term suiting to a lab rat. However, Oscar does not see himself in the same light. He views his relationships as beautiful works of art and reflects his feelings in several of his publications. Wilde's ignorance about the crimes he was committing leaves him vulnerable to the prosecution because in his eyes, he cannot defend himself against a crime he feels he did not commit, thus he is slaughtered in court because he fails to see the seriousness of the accusations placed upon him. In his case, his ignorance of the laws of England led to his destruction. For him, ignorance turned out to be deadly.

Edson shows the exact opposite of Wilde's case in her examination of the last portion of the life of Doctor Vivian Bearing, a brilliant professor whose understanding of the world around her is anything but ignorant. She has spent her entire life looking at everything around her in an overly literal light. Because she is able to bring the metaphysical down to the level of physical through thorough analysis, she is capable of understanding everything around her. This incredible understanding, however, turns against her in the final stages of her life. When she is in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment, she has a much better understanding about her physical and mental condition than would regular person due to her increased ability to understand the technical jargon of Dr. Kelekian and Jason. Because she is aware that her condition is leading to imminent death, she relinquishes any hope of recovery and maintains this negative attitude until her death. Had she been ignorant to the seriousness of her condition, she would have believed that she actually had a chance of survival when told so by the doctors. This positive attitude could have had a placebo effect on her and actually might have bettered her condition. I this case, her ignorance would have been bliss. However, Vivian is anything but ignorant, which destroys any hope for her survival because of her overly negative attitude.

We see here that ignorance can be either detrimental or beneficial, thus the question of ignorance being bliss remains unanswered. One must judge for oneself whether ignorance in one's specific case would be bliss, because it could go either way depending on the individual circumstances of the situation.

Introduction

The retreat of Himalayan glaciers from their neoglacial maxima provides an insight into the glaciological processes that affected the area during the Late Quaternary and subsequent glacial episodes. Associated with these processes in the present day is the potential risk posed by glaciers and their impacts on human activities. Any glacier related feature or process that adversely affects human activities, directly or indirectly could be regarded as a glacial hazard (Reynolds, 1).

Glacial hazards encompass a wide range of events from catastrophic glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF's) destroying vital infrastructure in vulnerable communities through to glacier recession from climatic change resulting in increased storage of water behind unstable moraine dams at high altitude. Although a single glacial hazard rarely involves as many casualties as geologic hazards, the impact in high-risk areas and communities can be equally significant. Commercial projects in Asian countries are inadvertently extending into areas prone to glacial hazards in response to increased land use pressures and exploitation of natural resources. The impact on hydroelectric projects, through loss of generative power could endanger the economic development of a country such as Nepal.

Catastrophic floods originating from the outburst of glacial lakes have recently become recognised as a major hazard in Nepal, largely due to the potential devastation that can result from a single event. In severe cases, even the perceived threat from glacial hazards may be sufficient to restrict national investment in rural development. As awareness grows, people at risk along with technical experts and potential donors need to decide whether to pursue strategies to actively to actively reduce the hazard posed by the lakes. The threat is now being addressed at national planning level within host Governments of the Himalayan region (Chhetri, 1).

Do my essay on Glacial Lake outbursts CHEAP !

This report for the Nepalese Electricity Authority (NEA) aims to (i) examine the processes of formation and development of potentially hazardous glacial lakes and (ii) outline technical implications for lake burst prevention and mitigation of a flood impact downstream, with particular emphasis on recent case studi in the Eastern Himalayan region.

Nature of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods

Glacial lakes are a common feature at altitudes between 4500m and 5500m in many river basins in Nepal (figure 1). Such glacial lakes, particularly in the eastern Himalayas often occur behind moraine dams (Yamada 1), on glacier surfaces and where glacier ice and/or lateral moraine blocks a side valley. As glacier recession occurs in response to climatic warming, melt water ponds form in the evacuated space between the retreating glacier and terminal moraines. If glacier structure impedes drainage of individual supra-glacial ponds, they may coalesce to form large glacial lakes. A steep surface gradient assists drainage of water from the glacial surface to pro-glacial positions, where it collects behind ridges. The primary control on the initiation of lake development is glacier style

In "Where To Put Your Hands," author Lee Tonouchi describes the main character as a shy, down to earth guy and a grandson who is always lectured by his grandmother. The constant pressure from his grandmother, to find a girlfriend, made it harder for him to find one. The main character has gone to school with Joy, a popular, young and smart childhood friend whom he has known for quite sometime. The other main character in "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," author Wendy Miyake is a young teenage girl who was different from other teenagers. When she was a child, her favorite superhero was Wonder Woman. She was fascinated and wanted to become that superhero.

The main character in "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," is shy whereas the narrator in "Where To Put Your Hands" is bold. In "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," the main character is a shy girl. She admired the popular girls from school. She says, "Basically the system worked if you were skillful with pompoms, exuded a consistant aura of perkiness or were born with incredible bone structure. You saw the coolness of the pyramids summits." She wanted to be on the top of that pyramid or popularity not in the middle where she was a nobody. In "Where To Put Your Hands," the main character lacked self-confidence. He admired Joy, a smart, pretty and popular high school girl. He says, "She wuz like my ideal. I dunno why but everytime I wanted fo' talk to her I got all nerjous. Cuz one pretty nerd is like one contradiction in terms, ah." Since intermediate school, the main character was always scared to talk to Joy. He felt the best way not to panic was to not talk to her at all.

The main character in "Where To Put Your Hands," was very conscientious. The main character admired Joy from afar. He had the urge to dance with Joy the whole night at the Leo Club function. "I remember I wanted so bad fo' dance with Joy. I had my eye on Joy da whole night. I made da kine mental comparison fo' see wot all da guys she axed had in common fo' see if I had chance." Unfortunately, he had the oppurtunity to dance with Joy, but when he attempted to ask her to dance, another girl approached him and asked him if he wanted to dance. In contrast to "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," the main character was furious. After several rejections by asking her guy friends to junior prom, she says, "Was it a part of my anatomy too small here, too large there? What? The questions kept coming. Could you choose a part? Pinpoint the problem." She wanted to be heard. She didn't understand why her own friends wouldn't go with her to the junior prom. "I wasn't looking for a four-month commitment but rather a fun night."

The final difference between the main characters in "Where To Put Your Hands" and "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," is one is overwhelmed, while the other is arrogant. The main character from "Wonder Woman and My Junior Prom," was so stunned that Scott, a popular high school football star, wanted to go with her to the prom. "Well…my daughter..y-you know the one who lives in my house. Yah, well…she uh bought this beautiful white dress, see, and ah…these bids you see…and I-I'd hate for it to go to waste." "I'd be glad to take her." "And she has these pretty gloves that go with the dress…and oh I don't know how to say this…" "Mr. Iwamoto, I'll take her." She was so happy that she got to go with him. Whereas, the main character in "Where To Put Your Hands," was arrogant. He says, "Somehow I knew we had a certain chemistry though. Could she possibly like me too? I mean I not da most good-looking guy in da world, ah…" He wanted Joy to like him for who he was. And although he did feel that Joy did like him too, he wanted to know for sure. The narrator compared himseld to Michael Furoyam, Rommel Ofalsa, and Kyung Taek Kang, a few of the other guys, who got to dance with Joy, the girl he wants to be with.

Alfred Hitchcock's Stranger on a Train is a spellbinding movie that takes a hold of one's mind with utter suspense and uncertainty. Even though there are several scenes that are suspenseful and cause one to suffer, the scene that took my interest was the murder scene of Miriam. Hitchcock provides one to suffer by introducing helpless and odd characters, eerie and strange situations, and finally intriguing and unusual camera angels.

The actual complexity and strangeness of the characters in the movie are a great reason and cause as to how Hitchcock makes his audience suffer. The scene of the murder of Miriam all began with a misunderstanding between Bruno and Guy. In his bizarreness, Bruno believes that Guy has agreed to the arrangement to exchange murders. Bruno plans to kill Miriam, the over friendly and selfish wife of Guy. Bruno stalks her and her two boyfriends at the local fair. In Miriam's odd state of mind, she thinks of Bruno as interesting and intriguing, perhaps attractive. She continues to eye him as he follows her into the tunnel of love. These two characters put together along with the two nonchalant boyfriends that haven't got a clue provides for a very interesting scene. These behaviors of the characters provide the audience with stress and tension, for they feel the vibe of weirdness that overtakes the scene.

Another aspect made to make the audience suffer is the actual surroundings. Fairs and/or carnivals are always strange and odd to begin with. This bizarre atmosphere combined with the darkness of the night, the laughter that surrounds the scene and a moat/creek that leads to the scary island sets up for anxiety and suspense. The weird scenery along with Bruno and Miriam being as psycho as they can be, results in suffering.

The final aspect that concludes as to how Hitchcock makes a wonderful and amazingly suspenseful scene is through simple camera angles. Hitchcock's camera emphasizes the abnormal and even funny images of Bruno traveling by himself into the Tunnel of Love. Miriam gets away from her men and wanders around searching for Bruno. When they finally run into each other, the camera takes a close up of both Bruno and Miriam with his hands fixed around her throat. Her glasses fall off and the camera closes in on the strange looking and ugly glasses of Miriam's. Bruno is shown strangling her with minimal struggle reflected in the lenses. There is not a clear view of what is happening as Bruno actually kills Miriam. The view of the glasses is distorted and provides an odd and almost eerie perspective. The helplessness of the situation is shown by the distorted camera angle and by not showing any other view of the murder.

Sigmund Freud Interpretation of Dreams

The journal article, "The interpretation of dreams [100]," by Leonardo Rodriguez, summarizes the works of Sigmund Freud in his book The Interpretation of Dreams. The author of the article looks to the book, by Freud, as a literary work of merit, and one of Freud's most appraised studies. In his book, Freud explores the battle between the unconscious and the conscious mind. The entirety of interpreting dreams focuses on the dreamer himself, the unconscious mind, and a framework of rules.

In the book Freud discloses that the secret of dreams are discovered through the dreamer himself. When reading the article, an analogy from highschool came into mind, based on this research done by Sigmund Freud. Each individual is an iceberg in the ocean, floating at great lengths, and in great masses. However, each iceberg needs to be examined separately upon approaching, because not one is similar. The same goes for the individual when analyzing a dream. Without the dreamer, no analysis of the dream is possible, "Thus, the dreamer becomes an analysand, that is to say, the subject, rather then the object, of analytic interpretation; and as a subject, the dreamer is subjected to the unconscious"(Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry p7). This is one of the great points in the article that leads to the study of the unconscious mind.

The book also clearly examines the research of the unconscious mind. Here again we see the analogy of the icebergs. The top of the iceberg is visible, and although just a small portion of the iceberg it is still apparent, this represents the conscious mind. The bottom of the iceberg is much more massive, and stretches on for miles, unknown to plain sight; this symbolizes the unconscious mind. In other words, it is saying that, "…the dream is not the unconscious. It is a privileged path of access to the unconscious"(p7). Dreams are merely a smooth, paved road to the understanding of the movement of the mind.

Order College Papers on Sigmund Freud, Interpretation of Dreams

Finally, in order to fully understand the dream, one must reveal the framework of rules of the "dream-work." "The interpretation of the dream demonstrates that the desire that divides that subject, the unconscious desire, is forever unfulfilled and does not cease operating once the subject has woken up"(p7). Freud is saying that, dreams are the unconscious desire and people awake from their dreams attempting to fulfill these desires. When trying to fulfill the dream while awake, its called reality, when asleep it is fiction. An individual needs a true encounter with the real, before he/she can truly be awake. This is the psychoanalytic encountering that Freud creates in his book.

Through the writings of Freud, the exploration of the conscious and unconscious is challenged in each of us. The interpreting of dreams focuses on the dreamer himself, the unconscious mind, and a framework of rules, through these demonstrations we are able to shed light on the methods of Freud. Freud as the subject-matter of his own book allows us to get an inside look at his own life and the details that made it what it was, a gift to the scientific world. He was the dreamer, the subject of the unconscious, and the analysand; a true testament to is work.

Merchant of Venice

In Shakespeare's comedy "The Merchant of Venice", Shakespeare uses split settings, Venice and Belmont. These two settings represent complete opposites, and these differences allow Shakespeare to build tension and suspense in the play. Venice is a place of hatred, destruction, and violence. A complete opposite, Belmont is a haven for lovers, where peace thrives, and a place where people go to confess their feelings.

Venice is a very important, historical city especially during the Renaissance. The North Africans and the Muslims inspired the architecture of the city. Venice is vastly populated with many different ethnicities, which leads to conflict and tension within the city, as is seen between the Christian Antonio, and the Jewish Shylock. The economy of the city is very dependent on shipping in the area, as Venice is a major port city. While Venice is an enormously populated economic hub, Belmont is completely the opposite of Venice.

Belmont, an imaginary city made up by Shakespeare, is a quiet and peaceful setting. Belmont means "Beautiful Mountain", and the relevance of that name is seen with the interaction between characters of the story while they are in Belmont. In Belmont, all the worries of the outside world are forgotten. There is a scarce population in Belmont, and it has come to be intended as a place for lovers. The words and actions expressed in these two split settings allow the reader to see how Venice is a place of danger and Belmont is a retreat for lovers.

Venice is portrayed as an area of destruction, hatred, and violence. The words and actions in Venice are typically spoken by men who are in search of money and riches. Destruction in Venice is seen when one of Antonio's trading ships is destroyed during its voyage, "I reasoned with a Frenchman yesterday, Who told me, in the Narrow Seas the part, The French and English, there miscarried, A vessel of our country richly fraught. I thought upon Antonio when he told me" (II, viii, Line ). Hatred is observed in Venice after Shylock's daughter steals some of his riches, and then proceeds to run off and marry a Christian. "Stolen by my daughter! Justice! Find the Girl!" (II, viii, Line ) and "My own flesh and blood to rebel!" (II, viii, Line 4). Violence is seen when Antonio is unable to pay off his debt to Shylock and he is forced to give up one pound of his flesh to Shylock, "You must prepare your bosom for his knife" (IV, I, Line 55) and "A pound of flesh to be by him cut off" (IV, I, Line 41). While Venice symbolizes death and destruction, Belmont is seen in a completely different light.

Belmont is portrayed as a peaceful sanctuary where peace thrives. The words and actions in Belmont are usually spoken by women full of beauty and virtue. Belmont is seen as a haven for lovers when several men travel there to woo Portia into marrying them, "And with an unthrift loved did run from Venice, as far as Belmont" (V, I, Line 0). Belmont also serves as a place of peace for the lovers, as is seen when Portia's family prepares a feast in honor or Bassanio picking the right chest, "Our feast shall be much honored in your marriage" (III, ii, Line 17). Belmont is portrayed as a place where people go to confess their feelings as well. This is seen when Portia tells her suitors to confess their love for her, "Confess and love" (III, ii, Line 7). Belmont is shown to be a haven of safety and peace to those that come to Belmont.

The two split settings that Shakespeare uses in "The Merchant of Venice" helps him to convey his message more effectively by building two plots in two settings adding to the tension and suspense. While Venice is the place of destruction, Belmont is the retreat for lovers. The fact that these two places are almost complete opposites of each other also adds to the suspense, and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next.

Describe how science challenges religious assumptions and explain the extent to which the two are compatible?

Over the many arguments I have come across in the debate of science vs. religion, I myself constantly hesitate about any religious assumption proposed. This is because I believe Science theories seem more realistic to the religious beliefs, also science relies on evidence and fact to prove it's self-correct but religion just relies on faith.

Many traditional Christians believe in the Bible, even though they have many competing theories over facts. Many conclude that a literal understanding of the book of Genesis indicates that God created the world during a six-day period, approximately 4004 BCE. Scientists have reached a near agreement though the process of carbon dating that the universe is about 14 billion years old and that the Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago.

Also Charles Darwin was the man to put forward the theory of evolution. He studied many species over a prolonged phase and came to the conclusion that all life-plant and animal- had evolved over millions of years though a process he had called natural selection. His book 'The origin of species' argues how the more advanced species had developed from simpler life forms. Species had adapted to their environments, become stronger and weaker species had died out. This is known as the survival of the fittest.

Help with essay on "Science versus Religion"

Humans could be seen to have adapted to their environment. This theory appears to challenge any factual explanation of the creation story in the bible as it undermines the thought that god created us. It somewhat implies we have evolved from simpler forms. Evolution may be a theory, but look at the evidence! Far more than there is for proving the existence of Adam and Eve.

Scientists in a bid to try and prove or disprove the events of the bible study the events and try to put scientific explanations for what is said to have occurs. For example when it was reported that the remains of Noahs arc had been found scientist went to the site to carbon date the wood to try and prove or disproved that the wood found was actually parts of Noahs arc.

Another point I must raise is how can God if he is "true" let all the evil go on in though out the world. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty...This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the rsum of a Supreme Being.

I do agree if God did exist he would show some proof. Prayers aren't answered and miracles don't occur and if they do which is rare it's most likely to be a act of coincidence.

Anyway why should people waste their lives thinking if god is 'true' or not I say just enjoy life while you have one because you only get one chance with life so make it the best.

Science and religion are compatible to a certain degree. For example the advances in communications (TV, Internet, Radio etc.) has allowed religion to reach more and more people around the world.

Having said all of the above I think religion does give a sense of belonging, hope, and wellbeing to the majority of the people on the earth. God may not exist as an entity however he does exist in the heart's souls and minds of people.

There was once a king, a great and mighty warrior named Genghis Khan. When he led his armies out to war, he conquered many lands, so many that his empire sprawled from eastern Europe to the Sea of Japan.

One day, the king rode out into the woods to hunt. With him went his favorite hawk. The hawk would fly about in the air, circling. When the hawk's sharp eyes spotted some prey from the air, the bird would immediately scoop down for the attack.

It was a warm day, and by afternoon the king was hot and thirst. He started searching for a spring of water he had once seen in the woods. Finally he spotted a trickle of water dripping down the side of a rock, and he knew the spring must be above.

The water fell from the rock slowly, drop by drop. It was not much, but it was water, and the king was very thirsty. So the mighty Khan took out a small silver cup and held it under the dripping water. Ever so slowly, the cup began to fill.

The king could hardly wait to feel the cool liquid wet his dry lips and tongue and throat. So, even before the little cup was quite full, Khan pulled it out from under the trickle of water and lifted it toward his lips. Suddenly, something swooped through the air and knocked the cup from the king's hand, spilling the precious water on the ground.

Startled, Genghis Khan looked up to see his pet hawk, flying from tree to tree and looking rather proud of himself. The king glared at the hawk, picked up the cup and began again to slowly fill the cup. This time, he let the cup fill only halfway before he lifted it to his mouth. The cup was just about to touch his lips he could almost taste the water when again the hawk swooped down from the air and knocked it from the king's hand.

By now, Khan was quite angry with his hawk. A third time he collected water in his cup and a third time the hawk kept him from drinking it.

The king turned red in the face from anger. He paced back and forth, glaring at his hawk which was perched on a nearby branch. In his fiercest voice, the mighty Genghis Khan bellowed, "How dare you spill my water!" He bent down to retrieve his cup and then said in a quite, but still furious voice, "If I could catch you, I would break your neck."

The mighty Genghis Khan bent to fill his cup again. But this time, the king drew his sword from the sheath at his side. "If you knock this cup from my hand again, hawk," the king said to his pet, "it will be the last thing you ever do!"

Sure enough, as the king brought the cup to his mouth, the hawk swooped down and knocked it out of his hand. But this time as the hawk passed, the king raised his sword, and with a well-timed flick of his blade, struck the bird in mid-flight. The hawk fell at the king's feet. With imploring eyes fixed on the king's face, it bled to death.

"It's what you deserve," said the king and stepped over the bird to find his silver cup. But the cup had fallen between two rocks and, try as he might, the king could not reach it.

"Well, then," thought the king, "I will follow this trickle of water up to the spring from which it comes. I still need something to drink."

So Genghis Khan began to climb and as he climbed, he became thirstier and thirstier. Finally, he found the pool of water. The king strode eagerly toward the pool, but at the water's edge he gasped and took a quick step back. Lying in the pool was a huge, dead, snake a snake whose venom would kill a man with the slightest taste.

The king stood very still. He was no longer thirsty. All he could think about was the dead hawk lying on the ground below.

"That bird saved my life," he said. "That bird was a true friend, and I have killed him."

The king went back down the hill, half running, half sliding. When he reached the bottom, he carefully picked up the dead hawk and gently placed it in his hunting bag. Then he rode slowly home.

Egyptian Religion

Religion was the center of life for Egyptians. Except for a period of about one hundred years, their religion was based on beliefs in many gods, polytheism. Some of the gods were connected with death and afterlife. There were gods who created and ruled over the world. Everything the Egyptians did was based on their religion. Many Egyptians built small shrines at their homes to worship their favorite gods. Before Egypt was united, every town and village worshipped its own gods. Egyptians worshipped as many as ,000 gods and goddesses. They identified their gods with animals. The gods had a person's body with an animals' head. All Egyptians worshiped the most important god, Ra the sun god, with consistency. Even the Egyptian pharaohs made offerings to the gods as part of their worship.

The Egyptians believed that the gods created the world. The ocean existed before anything else. The Sun god, Ra, came out of an egg and appeared on the surface of the water as the sun. The god An had children, Shu and Tefnut, who formed the atmosphere. Ra's child, Geb, formed the earth. The god Nut formed the sky.

The Egyptian 'Book of the Dead' contained hymns, prayers, and spells. The book described that the gods would weigh the dead person's heart to decide if the soul would go on to afterlife.

Egyptians spent a lot of time preparing for the afterlife. During life, the Egyptians would look forward to life after death. After death, the body would be prepared. First the priest recited prayers. Next, the body was washed and purified. The organs would then be removed and stored in canopic jars. The body would be packed in natron, a type of salt, for 40 days. After the forty days, the body would be filled with sawdust, resin, and natron. The body would be wrapped in bandages. Jewelry, amulets, and scarabs-good luck charms- were placed between the layers. A mask was put on the head by a chief embalmer who wore a jackal mask to represent the god Anubis. At last the mummy was put into a coffin. The coffin was made to look like a human. A face would be carved on the coffin that looked like the dead person. Spells and prayers were written on the inside of the coffin to protect the soul. The Egyptians believed this process would preserve the body for life after death.

The coffins were put into tombs. In the tombs, furniture, statues, games, food, and other everyday items were buried with the mummy. The priest would perform an 'opening of the mouth' ceremony. This ceremony gave the mummy the opportunity to eat, speak and have full use of the body in the afterlife. The tomb would then be sealed.

The Egyptians believed that their lives would continue after death. The burial ceremonies and customs prepared the soul for the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that the afterlife would be much like life when they were living. The Egyptians were buried with things that they enjoyed in life so that they could continue to have a good life after death. Some people were buried with clothes, games, pets, and statues. The wealthy Egyptians were buried with gold and jewels. Even the poor Egyptians would be buried with some of their favorite things. They wanted to be buried with the things they would need to enjoy the afterlife.

Religion played a very important role in ancient Egypt. From explaining how the world was created to a belief in life after death, religion was the central part of Egyptian life.

When I was five years old, my great-grandmother suffered from her fourth stroke. Since my parents consistently worked to support our family, I spent much of my youth with my grandparents and great-grandparents. For the rest of my life, I will never forget the time I spent with my great-grandmother, Theresa. After her last stroke I remember standing near her bedside and holding a pan under her chin as she suffered from illness. As she lay in her bed, I held her hand and prayed with her until she passed away. Since I was a child, I have been compelled to aid those in need. My compassionate spirit and inner strength inspire me to serve and extend my heart to others.

As I have grown older, my dedication and passion for others continues to shine through. I feel blessed because my mother is both my inspiration and my role model. She is a pediatric nurse who dedicates her life to helping sick children and their families. She often allows me to accompany her to the hospital and assist on her unit. Through these visits, my enthusiasm for nursing grew. One visit particularly stands out in my memory. I remember watching my mother rock a sick baby, suffering from RSV, to calm her cries. This event fostered my compassion to great levels because my mother was able to calm the baby and make her smile. As I watched my mother soothe this baby, I began to envision myself following in her footsteps. After that day, I knew that my true calling was nursing and I became determined to pursue my dream.

Since I take pleasure in assisting others, I have recently volunteered at a nursing home. On my very first day, I realized what an incredible experience it is to help the elderly. I was fortunate enough to have personal interaction with the residents because I assisted in the activity department. I led them in rosary, directed their exercise, called off bingo numbers, wheeled individuals around, assisted them in the bathroom, and talked personally with many people. One resident particularly touched my heart. Each time I visited the nursing home Virginia made me feel like I made a difference in her life. Many of the residents were not willing to open up to me, but Virginia shared many stories about her life with me. In addition to completing the tasks assigned to me by the coordinator, I also acquired knowledge far more rewarding through the interactions with the residents. Through this experience I learned the true value of responsibility and patience. The experience was truly gratifying because I was able to put smiles on the residents faces and become acquainted with them at a profound level. Since I found great pleasure in serving my community, I continue to visit the residents for their own and my own contentment and satisfaction.

Over the past eighteen years of my life, I have grown and developed intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. Not only do I dedicate time to learning at school, I also attempt to understand and improve my persona on a daily basis. I believe that nursing is intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally stimulating. My sister just graduated from Loyola and speaks highly of the school because she believes that the school fostered both her intellect and spirit. I chose Loyola for this reason. Learning is more than just acquiring mathematical and scientific knowledge. To me, true knowledge requires an understanding of interactions with others. Therefore, I believe nursing is my true calling because it requires more than sheer brains. Nursing calls for compassion and dedication to the service of others.

Loyolas motto of knowledge in the service of others perfectly corresponds with my ambition in life. When I was a young child, I discovered the gratification of assisting others while supporting them in moments of despair. Throughout my life, I have dedicated time and heart to continue along this path. As I continue to grow at Loyola, I look forward to develop the skills that will help me serve others in the face of sickness.
