The body shop international PLC

Situation Body shop was built not as a profit generating entity but as an organization to make a social change in the world; ethics and social concerns formed the backbone of this company. The case questions it was still true with the body shop and refers to how the company had deviated from its original path of ethics.

Anita Roddick started the Body shop in London in 176 and by 177 it had a number of shops in London. The BSI adopted a very different approach to business and was not like any of the other Cosmetics firms. BSI believed that ads created needs that didn’t exist and so none of the BSI products were advertised. It was against using testing products on animals and supported various social groups from PETA to groups supporting the Kurds, Tibetans etc. By 11 it had expanded to the US and had around 40 shops in various metropolitan cities. Both in the US and UK, it faced severe competition but dominated in its niche business of organic or natural products. Financially it had experienced around 50% growth until 10 and then it leveled off. From inception till 11, it was following the “CSP driving the relationship” model. (Fig 1)

BSI realized that the niche of its business would fade if no efforts to strength its brand were taken. Also, in the US market where a number of brands exist it was significant to establish differences in the brand and specific brand awareness. To address this issue, Anita Roddick appeared in an Amex ad talking about her travels in search of exotic ingredients. From 16, BSI started piecemeal advertising to push sales. Roddick also published her autobiography, Body and soul, and also released a documentary series, millennium, and donated a large portion of the proceeds for various social organizations and causes. This created a lot of good press for both Roddick and her company.

livepaperhelp.com

Issues The biggest issue in this case is the perceived image of a company and the actual reality that it operated in. BSI was painted as a social responsive corporation and meeting the expectations of all the 4 parts of the CSR model but it reality it was failing in almost all the aspects that it had promised to follow through, the testing against animals, no to ads, organic ingredients etc.

The issues started with a British TV new report on BSI, alleging that BSI had sourced materials from suppliers that had recently performed animal testing. This was against BSI’s stand, where it only partners with the suppliers who had not done any animal testing for the past 5 years and would continue so in the future. But the biggest controversy against BSI was due to a report on Business Ethics, by Jon Entine. He exposed BSI in a number of ethical issues Roddick had copied the idea of Body shop from a similar store in Berkeley, most of here recipes were outdated, off-the-shelf formulas that had been abandoned by other manufacturers, only a small % of the products were natural in nature and the rest were all petrochemical products, artificial colors, and lots of preservatives. The article also shattered BSI’s philanthropic image by stating that between 186 and 1, body shop contributed far less than the average charitable donations for US companies. And around 47% of its ingredients had been tested on animals. This was followed by share prices dropping, large sale of shares by investors adding fuel to BSI’s existing financial problems.

In response to this article, Gordon Roddick sent a letter, refuting most of these allegations, to all Business Ethics subscribers. This reaction instead alleviating the situating caused further trouble for BSI. The subscriber’s mailing list used was not authorized by Business Ethics but was obtained from the mailing-list company from a third party.

Stakeholders Anita Roddick, Body shop international and the customers who supported its products due to the ethicality of the operations are the primary stakeholders in this case. The employees, the franchisees, all customers and the suppliers have a lot of stake in this issue. The shares were plummeting and the shareholders have a lot of stake. The competitors like Limited, L’Oreal, and HO etc are keenly observing the situation and they definitely have a lot of stake in what is happening with the body shop. The campaigning groups, which were supported by Body shop, other social organizations have some stake. The media has a lot of stake.

Alternative actions

1. The social auditing process is a good move by BSI. The process can be extended by publishing these audits to the public.

. If the allegations of using large doses of petrochemicals and animal testing by its suppliers are true, then BSI should probably take a step back and decide what it wants to be; another cosmetics firm or a corporate different from the other, a corporate with social and ethical responsibilities. This might curtail its growth in the US market but might establish its name as a CSR company and as a niche player in the market.

. The company can change the unethical practices to their original ethical ones and advertise heavily their efforts to change their practices. This might give them some chance to grow in the US. But this would mean that they change their stance on advertisements and agree that it is a significant part in doing business in the US.

4. The other alternative is, BSI can show increased concern for the social environment and prove to be a socially responsible corporate. This might leads to fewer criticisms.

Final outcome The final outcome recommended is that BSI slow down its ambitious plans to grow. Follow its original goals and be a more socially and ethically responsible corporation than a profit generating entity. This would be the best option for Body shop.

What is bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology, computer science, and information technology merge into a single discipline. It aims to create unifying principles in biology that can be applied to differentiate between similar biological data. The actual process which involves the analysis and interpretation of data is referred to as computational biology. All biological computing is not bioinformatics, it usually has to do with the management and subsequent use of biological information.

How does bioinformatics help biologists?

live paper help

Biology in the 1st century is being transformed from a purely lab-based science to an information science as well. Major advances in the field of molecular biology over the past few years including the evergrowing genomic data have led to a large amount biological information which is difficult to decipher by the scientific community. Bioinformatics is all about retrieving, organizing, analyzing and storing data which will require the help of computational methods. It delivers easy access of information and projects a method for extracting only that information that is specifically asked by the biologists. Therefore, the field of bioinformatics has evolved such that the most pressing task involves the analysis and interpretation of various types of data, including nucleotide and amino acid sequences, protein domains, and protein structures. This ultimately helps the biologist to obtain a comprehensive picture of the cellular activities and thus base their research on how these are altered under various conditions.

TOP

Who can become a bioinformatician?

Anyone with a sound knowledge in biology, preferably with a masters in life sciences, with good computational abilities should be apt for this field. Bioinformatics also requires logical reasoning and good decision making abilities.

What are the areas of research in bioinformatics?

Research in bioinformatics will include development and implementation of tools that enable efficient access to various types of information which should be usable as well as manageable. Development of algorithms for prediction of a number of different biological data like genes, protein functions, protein structure, domains, and also to assess the relationship between large amounts of data sets is also another area of research. It is very common now for a scientist to conduct vast numbers of database searches to formulate hypothesis and to design large scale experiments. The areas of Genomics, Proteomics have come a long way due to inputs from bioinformatics analysis.

What is the scope of bioinformatics in India?

With a number of industries IT giants, Biotech and Pharma - foraying into bioinformatics, the field definitely looks promising.

Writers and Revolutionaries

The focus is on the rise of Asian nationalism. Embittered by the failure of the victorious powers to dismantle their imperial empires in the Pacific, their peoples racked by poverty, famine and cultural ferment, Asias leaders sought new strategies for change. Chinese writer Lu Xun and Japanese right-wing philosopher Kita Ikki are profiled as intellectuals who sought to resolve the conflict between the national character and international standing of their homelands.

At the end of the 1th and the beginning of the 0th century, there was a national awakening in China. The factors responsible for this rise of nationalism were the ruthless economic exploitation of the country by the European imperialists. Besides this, the social, economic and political exploitation of the Chinese by the reigning Manchu dynasty in collaboration with the Chinese landlords and the warlords resulted in great poverty in China. This aggravated the nationalist spirit of the masses. In 100 the Boxer Rebellion broke out, with the aim of overthrowing the Manchu dynasty and of expelling all foreigners from the soil of China. However this rebellion was ruthlessly crushed by the combined armed forces of England, Russia, Germany, Japan and the U.S.A. In 101, China was forced to accept the humiliating terms of the Treaty of Peking with the European powers.

Sentimental Imperialists America in Asia

This video examines American attitudes toward Asia from 1776 to the present the merchants, missionaries, and Marines who-however well-intentioned-often saw in Asia and Asians what they wanted to see, rather than the realities of those cultures and peoples.

A U.S. civil government in 10 replaced the military authority in the Philippines with William Howard Taft becoming the first civil governor. Taft later became an American president. American politics affected the islands as Taft and his successors were unwilling to delegate very much authority to the Filipinos. Eventually, a commission was appointed to investigate the situation in 11. Under opposition of the Filipino advocates for independence, the commission declared immediate independence would be a betrayal of the Philippine people. Official policy was changed with the election of another United States president, Franklin D. Roosevelt. A bill was passed in 1 granting the Philippines independence after 1 years. A catch to this was that the US would have military and naval bases. Another catch was that Philippine exports were to have tariffs and quotas imposed on them. Needless to say, the Filipinos rejected this bill. Another bill was passed in 14 that pleased both sides, by 146, the Philippines would be granted complete and absolute independence. This second bill also provided for a Philippine president to oversee an interim commonwealth, supervised by the United States. In 15, the constitution was approved by Roosevelt and ratified by the Philippine people.

China In the Red

The video “China in the Red” described china’s economic reforms and the major problems that they are experiencing economically. The deterioration in the state-owned enterprises, the crisis in the agriculture, the high inflation rate, a large number of unemployment, the inequality in the income distribution, economic disparities in different regions, corruption and bureaucracy, social problems and instability are the major problems that threaten the success of China economically.

Inside Japan

Japans post-war economic growth comes in the context of an increasingly interconnected global economy. As the Cold War winds down, and Japans economic power grows, trade conflicts build in Europe and the United States. The political, historical, and cultural underpinnings of Japans post-war economic miracle is considered in terms of the wealth it brought to the Pacific Basin and in its creation of a new Asian model of capitalism.

The postwar demilitarization and the prohibition of rearmament written into the new Constitution eliminated the heavy drain of military spending on the nations economic resources. The breakup of the zaibatsu (large business trusts) set loose the forces of free competition, and the ownership of farmland was redistributed on a wholesale basis among former tenant farmers, giving them fresh incentives to improve their lot. Barriers to labor union activities were also removed, with the result that workers job security became better protected and the way was opened for a steady rise in wage levels. Under the priority production system, stress was placed on increased output of coal and steel, the two main focuses of the nations industrial endeavor. An upswing in steel production laid the foundation for an overall takeoff of production, featuring a surge in capital investment sustained by the recovery of consumption. Production subsequently increased not only in the key material industries, such as steel and chemicals, but also in new industries producing consumer goods, such as television sets and automobiles.

Shes skinny, perfectly proportioned-with beautiful hair, glowing skin, fabulous makeup, and the best clothes that money can buy. This is an ideal that majority of us strive to achieve. But it sets a standard that leaves most of us feeling inadequate and unsatisfied with the bodies that we have. Whatever our beliefs about the exploitation of women, we must all be aware that society - and especially the media - portray an image of women that is both unrealistic and potentially unhealthy for the vast majority of women.

The media encourages and mirrors the current mainstream cultures standards for body shape or size and importance of beauty. The media reflect images of thinness and link this image to other symbols of prestige, happiness, love and success for women. Repeated exposure to the thin ideal using the various media can lead to the internalization of this ideal. It also renders these images achievable and real. Until women are confronted with their own mirror images they will continue to measure themselves against an inhuman ideal.

Overwhelmed by media images of skinny models, young girls are growing up convinced that being thin is the key to love and acceptability. The average person sees between 400 and 600 ads per day, that is 40 million to 50 million by the time she is 60 years old. One of every 11 commercials has a direct message about beauty. The average American model is 5 foot ten, and 107 pounds. The average North American woman is 5 foot four and 14 pounds. So what we show is not what we really are, (Hertz). Experts say the best defense against eating disorders is high confidence, something teenagers greatly need. They also put importance on the significance of young girls evaluating themselves in different ways other than their weight and to recognize the images they see in the media are often unhealthy and impracticable.

A negative body image is a universal problem, a common struggle many of us share. To end the rotation of destruction, though, we must realize that even though others opinion of ourselves may have shaped and programmed our current ideals of the perfect body image, we are in control of our minds. We have the power to reshape these ideals into healthier and more positive ways of thinking about our bodies.

Journalism, a profession that has started to become a good paymaster in the last five years has expanded over the years from print, audio, video, multimedia to the latest craze internet (Web content manager). Though journalism has its own ethical lapses, majority of journalists do have high ethical standards and are dedicated to their job, which in reality can be termed as a public service. The basic job profile of a journalist can be termed as gathering and presenting news for a wide variety of media, such as television, newspapers, radio, news services, magazines, Web publishers and book publishers.

To succeed in the field of journalism, there are a lot of personal characteristics that one should posses. Valuable skills include listening skills, writing skills, the ability to reason and think, imaginative skills, discipline, punctuality, and accuracy. Also, you should like people and have a healthy sense of both curiosity and scepticism. Journalists tend to be the kind of people who do not follow the herd blindly. Apart from this, one should have a good command of the English language. Students without grammar or writing skills are at a serious disadvantage right from day one. With the passage of time, one will also have to develop photographic skills, computer skills and political and cultural awareness. Till recently, this profession was entirely dominated by men, but women have successfully learnt how to be journalists and are now taking quite a large share of the market jobs available. This is one profession where there are a lot of job titles - reporter, journalist, writer, author, specialised writer, (science, sports, education, etc.), editor/copy editor, photographer, photojournalist, producer, news director, assignment editor, news anchor, videographer, TV reporter, radio announcer, content manager, Web designer, publication designer, multimedia developer, researcher, production assistant, graphic designer, graphic artist. One can look out for jobs in newspapers, magazines, new services and photo agencies, Web development groups and government information agencies.

The profession of journalism is changing rapidly with new information technologies, but there is expected to be continued demand for the skills involved in gathering, reporting, and interpreting non-fiction and public affairs information. Also, with the distinction between print and eroding, print journalists may be as likely to handle video as well as still cameras and audio tapes for computers as well as for radio broadcast. Napoleon described a journalist as a grumbler, a censor, a giver of advice... a tutor of nations, and added that four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets. True, and more true in these days of moral corrosion in public life. Against this background, a journalist acquires great significance; he can make or break, destroy and mould.

No doubt journalists have been accused of pandering to vulgarity and of irresponsibility, of being captious and prejudiced, but the enormous public awareness they have generated and their role in shaping public sensitivity cannot be overlooked. This has made students think of journalism as a serious vocation with a serious purpose.

Comparative Study Crucible & Guilty by Suspicion

ESSAY TASK While the context, lauguage and form have changed, the messages in Guilty By Suspicion are essentially the messages the Arthur Miller communicated to his audiences in the Crucible. Discuss the statement in relation to your understanding of both texts.

Guilty by Suspicion and the Crucible, both expresses the same message of how social hysteria victimises people who strongly stand by their moral beliefs. Though the context, form and language are different, their main aim in allowing audiences to realise the affects of social hysteria is achieved through various film and language techniques.

live paper help

Guilty by Suspicion illustrates the similar environment in which Arthur Miller wrote the Crucible. His main purpose in writing this play was to express his disgust with the McCarthyism hysteria that was taking during that time of 150s. Although Crucible is set in a different timeframe, based upon the events of witch-hunt that occurred in Salem Massachusetts during 160s, it has strong parallel connection with the events of communist hunting that occurred in America during 150s. Guilty by Suspicion is based on these communist hunting events.

To establish the context of 160s in The Crucible on stage, various objects were used. In the opening scene, A candle still burns near the bed shows that these events were taking place before electricity came. Candlelight creates a mood of mystery and fear on the audience. At the beginning of Act Two , Proctor ...continues on to the fireplace, leans the gun against the wall as he swings a pot out of the fire and smells it. This scene with the fireplace burning and warm food being cooked as well as lullabies being sang creates a warm peaceful mood on the audience and shows the lifestyle of 160s. This is also an anti-climax in the play after the previous hysterical climatic ending of Act I.

To establish the context of 150s in Guilty by Suspicion, various objects of those times were used as well. There were 150s cars on the roads, films that were being edited had 150s icon like Marilyn Monroe in them. Jazz music of those times were being repeated in the background like Im just a lucky so and so. This music was ironical. It was played in the background when David Merrill fortunates were changing from bad to worse. Not when he was becoming a lucky so and so. It allows the audiences to realise the contrast in his life and fortunes from what he was when he was successful and what he was becoming.

Joseph McCarthy is the senate who initiated McCarthysim. He turned his own political crisis into a major social one. After playing a dirty dishonest campaign to gain his Republican seat in the Senate, it became quite obvious that he will lose the next election as the truths about him started coming out. That’s when he came up with his communist hunting idea (from the Korean War happening at that time) and started accusing his opposition democratic party of being communists. Soon his communist investigation began to go beyond politics.

Arthur Miller communicates his message on McCarthyism in the form of a play. The parallel character of McCarthy in The Crucible is Reverend Parris. Like McCarthy, Rev. Parriss personal crisis of losing his position and power in the Salem society turns into a major social witch-hunt hysteria. At the beginning of Act I, when Rev. Parris was conversing with Abigail, it shows that his more worried about his reputation in the society than his daughters sickness. I pray you feel the weight of truth upon you, for now my ministrys at sake, my ministry and perhaps your cousins life. This shows the responders how power-crazied, self-centered he is like McCarthy.

Danforth is another parallel character portraying McCarthy. He is very proud of being a judge and the power that comes with it. He boosts about how seventy-two condemned to hang by that signature? which is his signature. But this proudness is his weakness and makes him ignorant to the reality of Salem that private vengenence is working through these testimony. Even when he sort of realises the truth, he chooses to ignore it because his reputation, power and position is at stake.I cannot pardon these when twelve are already hanged for the same crime. It is not just.

Guilty by Suspicion is a reality film, which shows an era of political injustice. The opening scene shows the absurdity of the whole communist hunting situation. Larry Nolan unwillingly being interrogated by HCUA officials. The whole dimly-sunlit room is full of smoke with few furniture and Larry in the middle being shot from a high angle. His confused and broken, heavily breathing and does what any scared shitless loyal American would have done. The HCUA officials are shot from a low angle showing their authority and how powerful they are. Through this scene, the director communicates her message of how ridiculous McCarthyism was. This interrogation process allows audience to sympathise for Larry and understand how helpless and mentally affected Larry is. The smoke in the room creates a sense of confusion and fruitlessness of the whole situation on the audiences mind.

In The Crucible, peoples accuse each other for private vengeance. Putnam starts accusing his neighbours so that he can get their land. This man is killing his neighbours for their land. On the other hand, Elizabeth was accused so that Abigail can take her place as Proctors wife. She thinks to take my place, John. In Guilty by Suspicion it can be seen that peoples who are thought to be weak and will give in and give more names were targeted. Thats why David Merril was accused. This was shown through juxtapostioning scenes. In one scene his wife comments Maybe everyone thought making movie means more to you than anything else while in the next scene his best buddy comments, I know how much your films mean to you. This is shown to clarify to the audience why he was targeted and that peoples who targeted in McCarthyism was for a purpose.

Both of the texts show how social hysteria victimises people who strongly stand by their moral beliefs. The languages in both texts are colloquial making it easier for responders to relate to. Puns are used in the dialoges to combine many themes of the play together. It gives more than one meaning and appeals to a variety of audiences. Example of one is said by Proctor when he is arrested by Danforth, You are pulling Heaven down and raising up a whore! This statement maybe interpretated in a variety of ways by various responders. One might think it means, you are getting rid of the true divine peoples from the world and helping faithless peoples to take over the society. Another might think, You are moving away from God and towards the Devil. This statement is important as it tells how social hysteria gives rise to faithless people and victimises people with strong moral values. David Merril and Bunny Bexter served jail for not giving in to the authority. John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse were hanged for not confessing which according to them was a lie. All of them were victims of social hysteria. Only because they had strong moral beliefs, they didnt give in and therefore had the suffer injustice of the society and concequences.

Responders receive a dose of reality from the Crucible and the Guilty by Suspision of how powerful can mindless accusations be. The message though terrifying but real, unbelievable yet possible. The Crucible was written in 150s but showed an event of 160s. Guilty by Suspision was directed in 10s but showed an event 150s. The language and form are different. But the message, the central gripping message is still the same. In the end one question remains. What is more important? Life or faith?

In Richard Wrights short story The Man Who Was Almost a Man, Dave, a seventeen year old African American male has a strong desire to prove that he is a man. He works with other black men in the fields owned by a white man, Jim Hawkins. At seventeen Dave believes hes ready to be his own man and that having a gun would make him a man. The gun acts as a symbol of Daves dream of manhood. As the gun evolves in Daves life, Dave becomes more of a man.

The presence of the gun is a powerful one in Daves life. The gun begins its existence when Wright tells us, One of these days [Dave] was going to get a gun and practice shooting, then they couldnt talk to him as though he were a little boy. Its clear that Dave believes that the gun is his bridge to adulthood when Wright said that if Dave had a gun, he wouldnt be regarded as a child.

Dave seems to think being a man is a result of having power. Wright refers to Daves physical size inhibiting his advancement to manhood and reducing his power. Shucks, Ah aint scareda them even ef they are biggern me! (Man, 16) He also tells us that Dave isnt even in charge of his own affairs, and hardly even his own life Mebbe Ma will lemme buy [a gun] when she gits mah pay from ol man Hawkins. Ahma beg her to gimme some money (Man, 16). This statement clearly tells us that Dave doesnt manage the money he earns from working as a field hand. Finally, Wright also implies that Dave isnt regarded as a man because of the way people talk to him. Whuts the use in talkin wid em niggers in the field... then they couldnt talk to him like he was a little boy (Man, 16). Dave thought that the gun would solve all three of these problems.

Dave believed that after solving these problems, he would finally be seen as a man. Having the gun would make him more physically powerful [Dave] could kill a man with this [gun]. Kill anybody, black or white (Man, 1-1400). The increase of physical power would make him more of a threat to the other black fieldhands as well as his white boss. They would respect him as a threat If he were holding his gun in his hand, nobody could run over him; they would have to respect him (Man, 1400). With the respect would come equality; they wouldnt talk to and treat him like a little boy, but a man with enough power to be a man.

At this point owning the gun is only a dream. Dave had thought up a quick plan to try and obtain his dream Ah know whut Ahma do. Ahm going by ol Joes sto n git that Sears Robuck catlog n look at them guns (Man, 16). By getting this catalogue the gun changed from being a simple word that was his dream to being a picturethe first manifestation of his dream. Joe at the store offers to sell Dave a gun after Dave told him he wanted to by one from the catalogue Say, if you wanna buy a gun, why dont you buy one from me? I gotta gun to sell (Man, 17). Joes offer to Dave only makes the pictures in the catalogue more real, his dream more achievable.

Dave managed to get the money to buy Joes old gun, his dream of having the gun finally fulfilled. Dave slept with the gun somewhere it could influence his new dreams, under his pillow The first movement he made the following morning was to reach under his pillow for the gun. In the grey light of dawn he held it loosely, feeling a sense of power (Man, 1). He finally had his symbol of his power, of his manhood. He could feel the power the gun could give him. When Dave decided to take the gun with him to work, he tied it to his thigh. He promoted his acquired dream to being a part of him.

Once Dave was out near the woods he stopped working and brought out his gun Lissen here, Jenny! When Ah pull this ol trigger, Ah dont wan yuh t run n acka fool now! (Man, 1400) Those were the last words he said before he decided to try to prove his manhood. He needed to stop imagining his dream and start living it. Dave needed to go through some private ceremony to be able to live his dream. All he had to do in this ceremony was fire the gun then he would finally know how to use its power to make him a man.

Right before he shot [Dave] told himself, Ah ain afraid. The felt loose in his fingers; he waved it wildly for a moment. Then he shut his eyes and tightened his forefinger. Bloom! (Man, 1400) So his ceremony began. He imagined that he had done everything right. Or at least he thought he had set everything up correctly. This ceremony of his didnt go very well as Dave had hoped A report half deafened him and he thought his right hand was torn from his arm (Man, 1400). Its clear something went wrong. This was supposed to make him feel strong, powerful, like a man. But instead, his hand has been ripped from his arm or at least it felt that way. Daves hand was only numbed from the ferocious bite of the pistol.

Dave looked down and the gun lay at his feet... [Dave] stared at the gun as though it were a living thing (Man, 1401). Daves dream, his gun, his manhood, had suddenly become a nightmarish beast. Daves ceremony that was intended to move him into living his dream only instead cast him into a nightmare. The beast he unleashed decided to add a little real-world effect by harming Jenny, the mule Dave had brought out to plow the fields with. Then Dave stopped short, looking, not believing. Jenny was bleeding (Man, 1401). His failure inflicted Jenny with a mortal wound.

Jenny bled to death, leaving a serious wall between Dave and his manhood. The only thing he could do to try to get rid of the nightmare was to bury it. He picked up the gun and held it gingerly between his thumb and forefinger. He buried it at the foot of a tree (Man, 1401). After he hid away his nightmare, which had already left its mark on Daves life, he went back across the fields slowly, with his head down (Man, 140). Dave was defeated by this nightmare.

The gun was out of Daves life for a little while, its painful mark left behind. Dave thought he could avoid anyone finding out about the gun and maybe guessing that he shot the mule Somethin musta been wrong wid ol Jenny. She wouldn ack right a-tall... Then when the point of the plow was sticking up in the air, she swung erroun n twisted herself back on it (Man, 140). That was Daves last defense against humiliation.

His plan was mostly working until his family showed up and one of the men burying Jenny noted that the wound looked like a bullet wound Dave, whut yuh do wid the gun, his mother chimed in well in time to drop all potential beliefs in Daves previous story (Man, 140). Gun, the very last work Dave could bear to hear at the moment. This word to him was no longer the word representing his manhood. Now it represented something completely differentit represented his foolishness and the nightmare his dream had turned into.

His father had to threaten to start beating him right there for Dave to finally confess Ah wuzn shootin at the mule, Mistah Hawkins. The gun jumped when Ah pulled the trigger... N fo Ah knowed anythin Jenny was there a-bleedin (Man, 140). That was his confession, his confession of his actions that lead to him being degraded further, throwing him further from his goal to become a man Looks like you bought yourself a dead mule (Man, 140). All it took was that line for the laughter to start flooding inpainful destroying laughter. Laughter that a foolish child would receive, not a man, not the man Dave wanted to become.

Dave knew he had to try his ceremony again, and finally become a man. But he had to face the nightmare that possessed his dream, and he had to defeat it [Dave] turned over, thinking how he had fired the gun. He had an itch to fire it again (Man, 140). It was either that or facing his fathers punishment and the humiliation of having to work for two years just to pay off the dept he owed Jim Hawkins for the mule N Pa says hes gonna beat me... He remembered the other beatings, and his back quivered (Man, 140). Dave felt that nothing good could come out of his situation if he stayed. So he decided to ignore what had happened earlier.

Dave thought Ef other men kin shoota gun, by Gawd, Ah kin... Yes, Now! He would go down and get that gun and see if he could fire it (Man, 1404). Dave had made up his mind. He was going to try his ceremony again. He knows that other men can shoot guns, so if he can shoot the gun, then he would be equal with other men. Thus, he would be a man and he could have his dream back and actually live it.

Dave ran back to where he had buried the gun, recovered the object that created the nightmare that was engulfing his dream Like a hungry dog scratching for a bone, [Dave] pawed [the gun] up. He puffed his black cheeks and blew dirt from the trigger and barrel (Man, 1404). Now he had this nightmare in his hands and he was ready to face it again and try to defeat it. Dave was ready to try his ceremony again, this time facing the nightmare and looking for his dream With effort he held his eyes open; then he squeezed. Blooooom! He was stiff, not breathing. The gun was still in his hands (Man, 1404). Success! Dave had successfully fire his gun.

Dave had finally managed to cast away the nightmare and see his dream again. Things had begun to go his way. Dave could finally wield the tool of power he held. Now that he could wield such power, he could be an adult. He shot off the remaining three rounds, confirming his ability to use his newfound power.

Now thinking [Dave] stood rigid. Two dollahs a mont. Les see now... Tha means itll take bout two years. Shucks. Ahll be dam (Man, 1404). He knew that he couldnt be a man here. He couldnt be respected as one at least. He heard a train starting to approach, and he headed down towards the tracks [Dave] gripped the gun tightly; then he jerked his hand out of his pocket... He hesitated just a moment; then he grabbed, pulled atop of a car, and lay flat. He felt his pocket; the gun was still there (Man, 1405). His choice to keep the gun was his way of bringing his power and manhood with him, to wherever he was going. He was going away, leaving his childhood behind. The gun, his dream, his manhood, was now a permanent part of him.

Sears.com has three types of intentions that their website tries to provide. The first intention, of course, is to sell their products over the web. Sears has a wide variety of products so a customer can purchase everything from a washing machine to a power saw to even kitchen utencils and clothes all on one website. Sears will ship all items that can be delivered by Airborne or U.S. Mail to your home or workplace. A customer can have their product(s) shipped any physical address within the continental United States. Under a special request, Sears will also ship to Military (APO) Addresses, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sears has a Store Pick-Up option for customers that do not want to pay for shipping charges. Another great thing about the Store Pick-Up option is that a customer does not have to wait for the product to be shipped to their preferred address, rather they can drive to their nearest Sears store and pick up their particular product(s).

The second type of intention of the site is to provide product repairs and home services. If someone needs repairs on major brand appliances, electronics, lawn & garden equipment or heating & cooling systems, a Sears’ technician can come directly to their house. The Sears’ technicians are trained to service all major brands no matter where they were bought. All one must do is schedule an appointment, which can be done online, for a Sears’ technician to come to your house and either repair a product or give a free estimate for home services.

The third, and final, type of intention of the site is to allow users to locate the nearest Sears store or just any Sears store in general. After typing in the zip code, city, and state you are looking for, the website will display all Sears stores within your location. This particular feature is especially handy when using the Store Pick-Up option. One can purchase a product or products online and then use the store locator to find the nearest store to pick it up at.

The Sears website layout makes it very easy to navigate through. Although there really is nothing flashy or dynamic about it, by the layout being basic it makes the site more user-friendly to people who may not know much about the internet. On the homepage it always displays weekly sales specials along with the price and links to each item on sale. The large tabs at the top of the page make it very easy to go straight to whatever type of product one is wanting to buy or view. These large tabs are located on almost any page you visit which makes it very convenient. This allows a user to jump to different departments without returning back to the homepage. Along with the tabs there is a column on the left side with links to each department and even the sectors within each department. At the very top of the homepage, there are links to a customer’s “shopping cart”, their profile, and the status of their orders. There is also a quick link to customer service and the store locator page. If a user happens to get confused about how to navigate through the website, there is even a link at the bottom of the homepage to a site map which has links to every aspect of the entire website.

livepaperhelp.com

In comparison with Walmart.com, Sears’ Website is really similar in terms of the layout of the site. They both have the tabs at the top that links to different departments within their stores and both sites also have the column located at the left of the page which links to departments as well as specific types of products within a department. Both sites advertise special sales they are offering and have a store locator but Sears.com has a lot more links on their homepage, which makes it easier and faster to find exactly what you want to view. Sears has a link on their homepage that will take you to a Sears’ homepage that is written in Spanish. This feature of course makes it more user-friendly to Spanish speaking people than Walmart’s Website.

Love from a persons family is the greatest thing in the whole world. People can have friends that love them but not as much as your family will. Many problems may happen to a family but the love always keeps the family together. Many people have bad days and weeks but they can always count on a family member loving them no matter happens.

My father is the person I look up to most in my life. My dad has been there every single time I have ever needed him and times I did not need him. He has his own business that he has run for thirty years. He is always on top of things and he remembers everything you tell him. He has accomplished so much in his life. He was an immigrant in this country that could not speak one word of English and now many years later he owns his own business. He is my idol because of his hard work and dedication. My father never gives up on anything. Once his mind is set on something he will try to accomplish it somehow. This characteristic held by my father is also held by his three children. He will never stop working until the day he dies.

My mom is also another person hat I look up to. My mother was also an immigrant. She has been a nurse for many years. My mother took seventeen years off from work. She did this because she wanted to raise her children and not have a nanny or someone look after us. I look up to my mother because of this. She had all three of us and she took the responsibility of having children. She has always made time for us. We always went on vacation every year. They usually let us pick where we want to go. She would always be at my little league game or a football game. She did not like sports but she did like seeing me excel in something that I do. She was proud of me when she saw me playing sports and doing well. I have many traits like my mother. We are like the same person. I feel more comfortable with her more than anyone in the whole world.

My brother and sister are two great people. I do not really fight with either of them. We may have the occasional fight but that is normal. I have gone to their sport games and they were always at mine. My brother and sister are two of my best friends. I have gone through the most things with them in my life.

My family is a very tight group of people. We have always been like that. We all fight with each other and sometimes are mad at each other. We never end up staying mad at everyone. We always make up or work something out. We are always working something out. I gave my little sister rides like when my brother gave me rides before I had my license. My parents will almost let me do anything I want. As a long as I am honest they will let me do many things. Everything in my family is about trust. If you are good and honest you should be fine. If you lie then they will be mad and we will not get along. Honesty is a great trait to have. My family is just like every other family. We work with love and move on from there.

This fiction story takes place at Welton Academy, a private school only for boys in Vermont, USA in the year 15.

One of the main characters is Mr. John Keating. He is the new English professor at Welton. When he was young, he was a student of this school and now he comes back in order to try teaching differently than all the others. And he succeeds in doing that. He wants the pupils not to simply read and interpret the poems famous poets have written, but he wants them to write poems themselves. He wants them to become individual persons, to forget acting how they get told to and make their lives extraordinary. Mr. Keating is an enthusiastic person. He really wants to reach his aims and nearly does everything for that. When he comes into class for the first time, to confuse the boys and make them paying attention, he is wearing a shirt and a tie but no jacket, like all the other teachers. He is sitting in front of the room, staring out the window and not saying a word. To convince the students of his different lessons, he does very strange things. When they have their first lesson, tells the boys to take their books and to rip out the first few pages.

Step by step, John Keating shows the students to make their lives extraordinary and to give them an individual touch. His most important motto is CARPE DIEM, what means SEIZE THE DAY!

He shows the boys the beauty of poetry. But the story takes a bad end. Because of careless actions, he gets fired.

live paper help

The other important characters in that story are the students, whos lives have totally changed since Mr. Keating is teaching them. There are Todd Anderson, Knox Overstreet, Neil Perry, Charlie Dalton, Steven Meeks, Richard Cameron, George Hopkins and Pitts.

Sixteen-year-old Todd Anderson is a new student at Welton Academy. He is a calm and shy person who doesnt speak much about his thoughts and feelings. His brother was at Welton too and he was one of the best students there ever. So Todd has to stand a very hard pressure because everyone, his parents and his teachers, want him to get as well grades as his brother got.

Todds self esteem is very low at the beginning. When the boys should read out their self-written poems the first time, Todd refuses to recite his one. But Mr. Keating doesnt accept a no. So he instructs him to come out and to stand in front of the class. Then Keating does an experiment with him. First he tells him to shout very loud, in order to forget his fears. Then Todd has to look at a picture, to close his eyes and to cry out the impressions, that come to his mind. Now there is a poet speaking. Keating cheers.

Todd Andersons personality changes until the end of the book. He gets more self confident, courageous and he bothers to act how he wants to. He tells what he thinks and lives his own life. Carpe diem helps him with that.

Knox Overstreet is also sixteen years old. He is an extrovert person. At the beginning of the semester, when he is invited to the dinner at the house of his fathers friends, he gets to know Chris. Shes the girlfriend from Chet, the son of his fathers friend. At the first time, he sees her, he falls in love. He isnt able to concentrate on the lessons any more. And when he has to write a poem, it is always about Chris. He nearly tries everything, that Chris falls in love with him. At a party, Chet hits him because he touched his girlfriend. But Knox doesnt punch him. Chris often tells him to stop longing for her because Chet is likely to kill him, but Knox doesnt matter. He loves Chris and doesnt give up, until they kiss romantically under the full moon.

Neil Perry is the roommate of Todd Anderson. He helps him to become familiar with life at the boarding-school. His father is a very strict, suppressing and authoritarian person and Neil suffers from that. He always has to agree with his fathers plans and isnt allowed to have his own opinion, dreams, wishes and plans.

But then John Keating shows him another way to live. The motto, the poems and the Dead Poets Society club help him to realise his own dreams. He gets to know, that the acting-club still searches actors for the stage play A Midsummer nights Dream. Acting has always been one of Neils dreams his father forbade. But now he has got so much self esteem, that he doesnt hear to the words of his father anymore and starts acting. He gets the roll of Puck, the central figure. He is very happy at the rehearsals and glad about his courage to act against his father. But his Dad soon comes to visit his son and to forbid him acting.

So he takes him home, after the scene. But Neil doesnt even think of living at his parents house and doing the same as in former times-exactly the things his father wants him to do.

He is desperate and doesnt see another way, so he commits suicide.

Charlie Dalton is the shareholder of the group. He is a fanatic. Charlie calls himself Nuwanda to show the others how serious he is about all, they learn from Mr. Keating. He sees everything in an easy and relaxed way, maybe too easy. One night he brings two girls into he cave to the meeting of the Dead Poets Society where only boys are in. The others are very surprised. They want to get informed before someone starts such actions. But then, they are happy about it because hey have a lot of fun with them and girls are a very rare thing in their lives at the boys school.

Charlie also writes a clandestine school paper article which contents the demand for girls at Welton Academy. That causes a big conference where Mr. Nolan, the headmaster wants to find out the author of this article. Suddenly there is a phone ring. Charlie opens his bag and takes a telephone out. Welton Academy, hello? he says for all to hear. He talks with the imaginated person on the phone and after some phrases he holds the receiver out to the headmaster. Its for you, its God. He said we should have girls at Welton, Nuwanda says. this action causes many problems. As a punishment, he gets caned with a stick until his back is bloody. In the end he gets expelled because of his behaviour.

Steven Meeks is not as important in this story as the other boys. There arent many facts about him to know. He is the clever one of he group. Especially in Latin he is a scholar. So the others always come to him when they have problems in school. They often come together in a study group o learn all together. Meeks is the Leader for sure.

No matter the discipline, artists find inspiration in a variety of ways. An artists imagination and emotional state play a vital role in the creative process. Artists also use their environment and religious influences to inspire new creations. Finally, one may be forcibly inspired by artistic patronage.

An artists imagination makes an impact on their work. New, unknown images, words, and sounds are formed to create unique masterpieces. Similarly, ones emotional and mental state can pay a pivotal role. For example, Pablo Picasso was known to have dramatic mood changes, swinging from extreme highs to extreme lows. This disorder influenced his rose and blue periods.

An artists environment also contributes to their art. For example a musician or painter may write or paint about things that are native to their surroundings such as an event or seasons.

Religious standings often played a major role for artists, especially in medieval times. The church ruled and artists made sacred music and art which would be used in religious services.

Finally, an artists may be inspired because they are paid to. The patronage system was very popular, especially in the Renaissance and Classicism eras. Often the church or a wealthy family would hire a musician or painter to be at their disposal. A well known story of a commissioned artist was that of Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo was hired to paint a married woman, later identified as the Mona Lisa. After painting her picture it was said that da Vinci loved it so much that he often carried it around with him. Although da Vinci was not personally inspired to paint her picture, it remains one of his most famous pieces of artwork.

In the summer months however, people tend to spend there time in the outdoors because we have little time to enjoy the weather and everyone wants to take advantage of the warm short months. Therefore sales during this time will not be as good.

Major Participants

Competition

Through research we have found that there are a few cigar lounges in Toronto. T Although there is competition we feel that the cigar smoking market is a vast and lucrative business. There are also cigar retailers exclusively selling cigars; however they have a very small lounge area, not enough to be called a “lounge”. From this, we benefit because our target market are cigar enthusiasts and they appreciate a relaxing environment where they can enjoy a true, rich cigar along with beverages and entertainment. Comfort is very important for us and that is what will differentiate our venue from others. People will want to come in and enjoy the time they will spend in our lounge.

Industry Trends

Influencing Factors

Although establishments have to be smoke-free as of January 004, the cigar industry has been booming in the past years due to unprecedented publicity from celebrities, and the media. Decades earlier, the majority of people smoking cigars were 40-70 year old men, and now, we are seeing younger men and women joining the bandwagon. Trends have changed recently as well. There was a 14.6 percent sales jump in 14, followed by a 1 percent rise in 15. In 16, sales of premiums, hand-rolled cigars jumped 67 percent. In 17, they leapt another 0 percent.

There is also a perception that cigar smokers are highly educated, whereas cigarette smokers are not as much. The idea of cigars exudes luxury and wisdom, which is why it has been attracting the public’s attention. Cigar smoking is viewed as a reward or a “want”, not a need, just like alcohol; this is true for any form of entertainment. They both have serious health risks added, but then again, everything in this world is a health risk. The effects of cigar and cigarette smoking do not change, however, cigars are more natural, and are not produced with as many additives as cigarettes.

Forecasting

The demand for cigars has recently begun increasing because society has learned to tolerate this custom. The trend of younger smokers is being widely spread, and since they have long to live than their older counterparts, they will be smoking for a longer period of time. Many suppliers are unable to match the demands, and many buyers bid well beyond the reasonable prices for these cigars. This will be a driving force to keep the cigar industry booming well into the future. The fact is that it takes years from the time a seed is planted until it should be used on a cigar and 6-1 months to train a cigar maker to make 00 average size cigars a day.

Beowulf vs. Grendel

The author of Beowulf goes to lengths to show Grendel as evil and monstrous and Beowulf as brave and heroic. The events leading up to the fight made me understand that Grendel is cursed by God, portrays demonic qualities, in turn create a desire for our hero to prevail. This led me to believe that Grendel is on a personal vendetta to kill anyone who stays at Heorot and that Beowulf is the only man who can destroy him. Since Grendel is a descendant of Cain he is also cursed and banished from society.

Like Cain, it is possible he is so enraged that he cannot be a part of this group that his mission in life is to kill them all. “…it was widely understood that as long as God disallowed it, the fiend could not bear them to his shadow-bourne.”(pg. 1647, 705-7) Grendel continues to kill anyone who is part of society or the group at the mead hall. The author also points out that since Beowulf is a man, God will watch over him. In contrast, Grendel is some sort of evil creature and cursed by God. During the fight scene it is easy to envision Grendel as a creature rather than human.

When Grendel came to attack Heorot the doors flung open at his touch even though they were locked. He is shown as a hungry monster ready to devour his victims. Grendel is shown killing and eating the first guard he encountered. “…he grabbed and mauled a man on his bench, bit into his bone-lappings, bolted down his blood and gorged on him in lumps,…”(pg.1648, 740-) The descriptions make Grendel seem birdlike. Also, when he closes in on Beowulf and the author notes, “his talon was raised to attack Beowulf…”(pg. 1648, 745)

Grendel is shown as powerful but cowardice only attacking at night. This night would be much different since a man of superior power had come to rescue the city. Beowulf is not using weapons as a sign that he will fight the monster fairly. He is showing his bravery and strength through this heroic action. “No weapons, therefore, for either this night unarmed he shall face me if face me he dares.”(pg.1647, 68-5) The heated battle between the two ends when Beowulf tears Grendel’s arm off with his superhuman grip.

In conclusion, the author has created an excellent model of good versus evil. Grendel is connected to a line of murderers cursed by God. His demeanor is hellish and demonic. This allows the reader to relish in the thought of his death. Who better to do the impossible deed but our hero Beowulf who fatally kills the monster. He is our hero because he killed the enemy and saved the town.
