Rising from his marshy home, he would stalk to the Kings high hall, and there devour fifteen of Hrothgars sleeping warriors. Then, before departing, the monster would seize fifteen more men with his huge arms and bear them back to his watery lair. For twelve years the slaughter continued.

Word of this terror spread across the sea to the land of the Geats, ruled by Hygelac. Beowulf, Hygelacs principal advisor and warrior and a man of great strength and courage, heard the tale of Grendels murderous attacks. Straightway, he set sail to free the Danes from the demons depredations.

In Denmark, a coast-watcher met the weary company of fifteen seafarers. Learning of Beowulfs intended mission, he permitted the Danes to pass.

The Danish Hero Unferth unjustly criticizes Beowulf.

Beowulf meets Grendel in single combat and kills him.

After the feast, then Danish warrior Unferth, who had earned considerable honor among his own folk, sat at the feet of King Hrothgar. Unferth’s heart burned with shame and anger that Beowulf, the bold, brave seafarer, had traveled uninvited to his land in order to slay the monstrous giant that Unferth himself was afraid to meet in the battle. Unferth unlocked a hoard of words revealing his hidden anger.

“Are you that Beowulf,” he began, “who foolishly boastful, rempted the waves and risked your life, striving against Breca in a swimming match on the broad billows of witer’s swollen sea waters? I heard tell that no man, loved or loathed, coul dissuade you from dangerous desire. You swam in the grip of the waters for seven nights. Breca, being stronger than you are, surpassed you in swimming. The morning tide then carried him near his folk, his home, his walled town, and his treasure.”

if you decide to spend a night in this best of buildings waiting for Grendel,” Unferth concluded, “ I foresee a harder match and a worse faith for you, strong though you are in the struggle of battle.

Beowulf replied. “Unferth, my friend, your mind id muddled with

In 8 Phillip of Macedonia advanced his troops into battle at a place called Chaeronea. For both the Athenians and the Macedonians it was a very historical battle, a battle in which the result would decide the future for Athenians, Macedonians and all Greeks. For if the Athenians had secured victory on that morning in Chaernoea, then many questions need to be asked.

Demosthenes’, who some have said was the greatest orator in this time of Greece and is often refereed to as the father of Democracy, did little to help the causes of Phillip of Macedonia. When news of Phillips success, in the north in Amphissa and Elateia, reached Athens, the Athenians were shocked, and no speaker dared to mount the rostrum as nobody was sure of what advice should be given . Demosthenes then stood proud and urged the Athenians to stand by the Thebans and fight Phillip. From this time onward Demosthenes was supported by all of Greece, which had recovered its confidence to the extent that even the generals would follow orders from him .

Phillip, whilst taking a more diplomatic approach, wanted a Greek war against Persia , which meant he wanted the cooperation of all Greeks states, especially the Athenians. The Athenians were important for many reasons but the main reason being that they still controlled a great navy and that an Athenian Fleet would be very useful . It is also possible that Phillip recognized Athens as the spiritual leader and center of Greece .

So when the peace ambassadors arrived in Athens they were sent away because Demosthenes had convinced the Athenians that Phillip was intending to destroy Athens , which is later disproved. Plutarch supports the bias view of Demosthenes when he states

“Demosthenes political position was clear enough even while peace still prevailed, for he allowed no act of Phillips to pass un-criticized, and seized upon every occasion to incite and inflame the Athenians against him”

This statement shows how Demosthenes would oppose everything that Phillip had said and that he tried his best to keep the Athenians away from Phillip. Demosthenes, being a strong advocator of Democracy probably realized the problems associated with Athens had they signed any alliance with Phillip. So Phillip had no choice but to meet a combined military contingent of the Greeks at a place known as Chaeronea. The battle was short and it was evident that the combined army of Thrace, Athens and allies was no match for the Macedonian army. Phillip dealt with the Thebans severely but was very lenient on the Athenians.

Phillip shocked everyone and proved Demosthenes’ wrong which lowered the respect for the once popular orator who at this stage had every able person fixing and manning the city walls. But instead of chasing the fleeing Athenians back into Athens he stayed put and called for a meeting of all Greek States. Phillip then acted in a way in which even Demothenes would have been shocked. To show respect, Phillip cremated the bodies of those killed in battle and sent the ashes escorted by Alexander, Antipater and Alcimachus back to Athens. The remaining captured prisoners were then sent home without ransom , which was unheard of. The Athenians, with much gratitude, welcomed an alliance with Phillip and the assembly voted to erect a statue of Phillip in the Agora, after making Phillip and Alexander honoree citizens of Greece .

With Athens now under control and with Demosthenes silenced Phillip then called a meeting in Corinth of the representatives of all city-states. It was there that he proposed an alliance, known now as the League of Corinth. Phillip ordered that ambassadors from all states should be summoned to Corinth in order to discuss the current state of affairs involving Greece . Phillip would not intervene in any structure of governments but a peace was to be established uniting all of Greece together. The original meeting was to safeguard the common peace and punish prospective transgressors. At no point it is believed , did Phillip approach the league at this foundational meeting about an invasion of Persia, but merely arranged the league into a working order that dealt with contributions as well as those members of the league that would decide to break the alliance.

The laws of the league were somewhat different then expected. The states that agreed to the peace and signed with the league (all but Sparta), were guaranteed freedom from outside attack even by their own exiles, freedom of navigation meaning that the states no longer had sea boundaries, and freedom from intervention in their internal affairs . States were to be protected against revolutionary changes to their constitutions and the league was to take action against those who cited a revolt or political coup against the accordance of the state. Like the Delian league , city-states were asked to contribute in times of war, in the ways that suited the league best. According to Justin, the league provided 00,000 infantry and 15,000 cavalry, as well as the Macedonian army . Once the plans of the league were presented, each state involved in the league contributed a number of members to the council of delegates that were responsible for administering the common affairs of the Greeks. This council not only passed decrees but also acted as a court, which could speak or act on individuals or cities. These rulings allowed the league to maintain full control of Greece.

In the summer of 7, the league went into an offensive and defensive alliance for all time with the Macedonian state, defined as Phillip and his descendants’ . Phillip then announced that he wanted to go to war with the Persians on behalf of the Greeks and to inflict punishment on them for the acts of sacrilege that they had committed . This sacrilege that Diodorus talks about is referring to the burning of the Greek temples and shrines during the Persian invasion of 40-8 .

This offensive view taken by Phillip won the respect of many Greeks, and so Phillip was unanimously elected ‘Hegemon’, with full powers of command over its forces by land and see, as a benefactor of Greece . This election by the Greek states handed all power over to Phillip. He was now in control of everything in Greece, with the exception of Sparta whom refused to join. Phillip was given Hegemon, not because of military strength, though I am sure that played a part, but more so for his diplomacy skills which he utilized tremendously well over the Greek states. His will power to revenge the Greek losses during the Persian wars was something that all Greeks had been looking forward and had anticipated for many years. Many leagues were formed but the Greek states often fought themselves over who was to lead Greece (Delian League). The fact that he did not advance onto Athens and other Greek states after the battle at Chaeronea and returned the ashes of the Athenian dead as well as releasing the prisoners were also important factors in Phillips diplomacy which caused the Greek states to join the league and honour Phillip as hegemon.

There is however two other reasons for the league forming. Isocrates, who had spent most of his career handing out pamphlets on Greek unity to fight a common enemy, had wrote a letter to Phillip after the battle of Chaeronea urging Phillip to “put an end to the madness and the imperialism with which the Greeks have treated one another, reconcile and bring them into concord, and declare war on Persia . Isocrates, who was 8 when he wrote the letter , said that he realized that his dreams of Greek unity were on the eve of fulfillment. Isocrates was a well-known and liked orator and Phillip admired him greatly. Phillips actions of uniting Greece were always on his agenda, however with letters from people such as Isocrates, Phillip would have felt encouraged and supported.

The second important aspect of the formation of the league was started when Phillip returned the Athenian army to Athens without ransom . Demades, also an orator, was a prisoner from the battle of Chaeronea. Phillip sent Demades back to Athens to open negotiations and to reiterate that he meant what he said by an alliance. At this stage, The Athenians, listening to Demosthenes, had everyone building the walls and manning forts . So the Athenians were surprised when Demades came with this settlement offer. The Athenians entered talks with Phillip and sent Demades and other delegates back to Phillip to continue negotiation and to ask for the return of soldiers . Phillip then handed the prisoners over to Demades without ransom. Demades also helped to organize the structure of the peace alliance, and when Alexander went to Athens to negotiate the peace, Demades played the leading role in securing the peace . The reasons for Demades being important is that had Athens sent someone else, such as Demothenes, who was originally sent with other delegates and turned back, then the peace alliance probably would have been stalled and therefore the league of Corinth may have been jeopardized.

The league, I believe, was a positive outcome from the point of view of Greece. I do however see Demothenes side, and it is difficult to presume what may have happened had Athens stayed out of the league or won at Chaeronea. Within the next two hundred years Rome would stamp their authority and there is no doubt that the battle of Chaeronea meant the end for Athens in that respect. Had Athens won at Chaeronea history could have changed in many ways. Phillip may of, and Alexander certainly would have come back into Greece in order to unite them. Persian intervention, which had already been present in Thrace , could have helped the southern Greek states hold out the Macedonians.

But the most important factor to consider was, was Athens already finished as far as Hellene Hegemony was concerned. We must remember here that Phillip ceased to pursue Athens after the battle. Had Phillip not been set on uniting Greece would he have taken Athens and if so, what would be of Athens and Greece in the years after the death of Alexander? This question is where I disagree with Demosthenes on the future of Athens. The Persians and Spartans had knocked down Athens many times before and so I believe that the Athenians were more than capable of bouncing back, as they did before, and take leadership of Greece. The only reasons why I can suggest for why they, and the rest of Greece, came to a sudden halt was because of lack of leadership. The deaths of Demosthenes, and Alexander in the years compromised any structure that had previously been put into place.

The League of Corinth for these reasons was the work of a shrewd statesman and a positive outcome. Greece was finally united, like Isocrates had dreamed. The Greeks, led by Alexander the Great, son of Phillip of Macedon, under Macedonian leadership went into Persia and took revenge, which many Greeks had waited for. The purpose of the league, although short term, was successful in uniting the Greeks in order to cause destruction upon the Persians for the acts of sacrilege that they had committed during the Persian wars .

Phillip may have had a primary agenda of uniting Greece in order to destroy Persia, but he hadn’t much confidence in the Greeks as allies. When Phillip went back to Macedonia he left the Greeks with a number of reminders so that they were kept aware of who was hegemon and that complete cooperation was required. Phillip had a number of garrisons placed around Greece. Thrace, for their act of betrayal had a garrison installed, along with Corinth, Chalci and Ambacia. These garrisons however were not installed as a sign of authority but more so as a peacekeeping force . This can be confirmed by the fact that a garrison was installed in Ambacia, a part of Greece that Phillip had no quarrel with but may of thought it was a convenient site for a force to keep peace in northwestern Greece.

In 7 BC, Phillip of Macedon wanted to unite Greece in order to fight the Persians. The League of Corinth was formed which saw the dreams of Isocrates and others finally come true. It wasn’t the first time the Greeks got together for war against the Persians , but it was the first time that the Greeks had a leader like Phillip. The league was successful in its aims, they were united and Persia was conquered. However, there was the price of freedom, which is exactly what the Greeks lost. They might have retained their states intact, but like the Athenians who lost control over their fleet, the states were under the control of Phillip and his successor Alexander up until the Greeks revolted in . The League of Corinth succeeded in uniting the Greeks in a war against Persia and was not intended to destroy or weaken any states, though it did.

Summer

The story “Summer” by David Updike is about a boy who finds his dream girl. But I feel is it also about youth and the freedom that comes with it, especially during the summer months. The story takes place at a lake during the last few weeks of summer near a lake resort. There really isn’t a whole lot of action in the story. Instead the author uses a lot of description, and detail about Sandra, the dream girl.

Homer, the main character is continually watching and admiring Sandra, but he never actually comes out and confesses to her his feelings. But somehow it seems she already knows he is attracted to her. One example is the time Homer was playing tennis with his friend, Frank. Before the winning point of the match she stands up and walks across the court. She stopped half way across the court turns around and calls the dog. The way she walked was described as “swaying”. Apparently it was the kind of sway that makes one ask if they want some fries to go with that shake, because Homer lost the match. Sandra later asks Homer who won and then almost completely ignoring him says, “ I wish I could go sailing.”(7) He notices she sunbathes every day, but never did get any tanner. He had known her all his life and had grown up in the shadow of her beauty she had the hair of a baby the freckles of a child and the sway of motherhood. () He watched her at her job, as she would “stare above the truckers heads.”(1) During the boat rides home he would lean into her hair as it flapped in the wind.

At one point he had his fill of her teasing him. One day they went for a hike with their family. He was following behind her watching her “pale legs” and her “tripping sneakers”(10) So he left her taking off running recklessly down the path, “howling into the woods”(10) trying to release his tension of his attraction. He stopped and waited for her. When she caught up to him she asked “where’ d you go? I thought I’d lost you.”(10)

The last night in the cabin Homer was sitting at one end of the couch and Sandra was lying at the other end. At one point the dog jumped up on the sofa with them, and when everyone was situated again, she had her foot gently touching the small of his back. After the dog hopped down, her foot stayed there she didn’t move back to her previous position. He moved his hand to the arch of her back, and realized that was as far as it would ever go.

Even though the majority of the story was about Homer and his infatuation with Sandra. It seemed like the story was also caught up in the essence of summer and the freedom of youth that seems to go along with it. We all have gone on a summer vacation and been caught up in the freedom of acting in a youthful manor.

He looked down at the floor and softly said good night. The screen door shut quietly behind him and he went out into the darkness and made his way through the unseen sticks and stones and it was only then tripping drunkenly on a fallen branch, that he realized he had never been able to imagine the moment he distantly longed for. (14)

For the most part that cannot be helped, but that is what summer is all about. “Life of summer went on in the silent knowledge that, with the slow in exorable seepage of an hourglass, it was turning into fall.” (1)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart was famous for writing beautiful music. He learned to play the piano, the violin, and write music since he was four. He has made some magnificent pieces when he was young and when he was old. He was born a musical genius. Mozart was important because he wrote the best music anyone had ever heard before. He played for royalty, in bars, and to well known musicians. He is different from other musicians because he was famous since he was four. He was one of the greatest composers in the world. Also, he was most known by people everywhere.

Mozart was born on January 7, 1756 in the town of Salzburg located in the Austrian mountains. He had a mom Anna Maria, a dad Leopold (who was a famous violinist), and an older sister Marianne (who was a musical genius too). Mozart’s full name was Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophillus Amadeus Mozart. Sometimes they added a couple more names to it. Most people called him Wolferl for short. He got interested in music when his older sister played the piano. After her lessons little Mozart would start playing all by himself. He loved the sounds of the notes. When he was four his father taught him how to play the piano. He could write music before he could write words. Also, he wrote a piano solo at the age of five. It sounds very good.

Mozart only wrote classical music. It sounds delightful and peppy. Actually, it sounds like a party happening on the Titanic. It is sometimes fast, slow, loud, soft, and full of action. Some songs sound like an opera or an orchestra playing. Some of the famous pieces he wrote were Allegro, Aperto, Adagio, and Rondo. Mostly all of his music was famous.

Mozart was married to Constanze Weber. She was just like Mozart in many ways. He loved her so much. They had six children, but sadly only two lived to adulthood. He sometimes had problems like spending money too quickly and always in debt. Also, he was always ill some people didn’t know if he would live. He died from kidney failure and malnutrition. He was writing a piece that a mysterious man in a black cloak told him to write. It was a sad lonely song. It sounded like it was his burial music. Yet he didn’t quite finish it. The date was December 5, 171. He was only 5 years old.

I think Mozart was a great composer. He was one of the best in the world. I admire his non- stop hard working days. He only got four hours of sleep a night the rest of the day he spent all his time writing the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever heard. And I’m not a classical music lover either. How could an ill man write such happy songs? I think he deserves to live and see how much deep down we like his music.

Barium is the 56th element in the modern periodic table. . Its symbol is Ba and it

is located in group in the periodic table. Barium is one of the alkaline earth metals. Its

white, highly reactive, metallic element. It has an atomic mass of 17. amu. The

element’s melting point is 850 ºC and the boiling point is 157 ºC. It has a specific

gravity of .5 at 0ºC . Barium has a density of .51 g/cm³. The element’s hardness is

comparable to that of the lead. It is the only alkaline earth metal that has a body-centered

cubic crystal structure. It has a valence + and has 6 energy levels. Barium is the 14th

most common element and makes up 1/000th of the crust of Earth. Barium was

discovered in 1808 in England by Sir Humphrey Davy.

Barium is never found in nature in an element form. It reacts with almost all the

nonmetals. It is mostly found in the minerals witherite, a barium carbonate( BaCO1) and

barite, a barium sulfate (BaSO4). It is also found in most soils at a low level. Barium

burns easily in the air and reacts with water to produce hydrogen. Barium reduces water

and dilutes acids to hydrogen. When it burns in the air, it produces peroxide, which

produce hydrogen peroxide when treated with water. At room temperature, Barium forms

oxides. All of the water-soluble and acid-soluble barium compounds are poisonous. The

element may spontaneously ignite in moist air. Because it’s extremely reactive, Barium is

never found in pure form and must be stored under kerosene to remain pure.

Barium has uses mostly in medical and industrial applications. In the medical

application, Barium enema is used to detect colon cancer. Radiologists use barium sulfate

to examine a patient’s intestines with a X-rays. When a patient drinks a suspension of

barium sulfate in water or barium enema, the barium sulfate particles temporarily fill the

digestive track. When the X-ray is taken, the intestines and other organs appear white.

In the industrial applications, Barium is used mostly for glass and rubber making.

The Barium Carbonate( BaCO) is used to make glass stronger and as a rat poison.

Chrome yellow ( barium chromate) is used as paint pigment in safety matches. Barium

sulfate’s perfect white color is used as a whitener in photographic papers and as filler in

writing paper, plastic, and artificial fibers. The mixture of barium sulfate and zinc is used

as a bright- white paint pigment called lithopone. Barite is also used as a weighting agent

in oil well drilling fluids. The metal barium is used in a TV picture tubes or is added to

lead alloys for hardening. The addition of barium oxide in glaesern and optical

instruments ( “barite” glasses”) changes the Brechkraft and the dispersion ability. A

nickel barium alloy is used in sparkplug wire and electron tube components. The barium

nitrate (Ba(NO)) is used to give green color to fireworks because barium salts give a

characteristic green color in the flame test. In its element form, Barium is used as a

“scavenger” for oxygen in vacuum tubes. Barium has very important applications in the

medical and industrial fields that make our lives in some way easier.

Some one once asked me why do we take time out of life to admire people. I think the answer to that one would be we admire people because of their cash, lives, lucsirious items, and other things. Well as you will learn that answer is completley wrong. Ask anybody one out of five kids in America say that they admire famous celebrities. The other four say it is someone they know personally.

Most of the people who do not have such a great life and admire famous people have parents who were not so great to them, and did not really care what kind of activities did in their spare time. Parents like this, should be punished because things like that stay with a kid for the rest of their lives, and it reflects on to the kids in their parenting hood.

On the other hand, the people who did have good parents admired their parents. Some for their patience, for their uncondiotional love, and other things. The parents who work two jobs and come home cook a good hot meal are the ones who make a difference. Not the ones who come home sit on the couch, and complain and say they need a drink. What do those parents do for you, in a situation like that they kid is practically raising itself.

So this should tell most of you the way to get someone to admire you is not for what you have, but what you do to make a difference in that persons life. Those are the things that will last forever. The answer to why do we admire people is because of things they do for us emtionally, not just physically.

The subject my partner and I choose to examine was a male with brown hair and eyes, who was of average height and a bit heavyset. He was sitting up, not hunched over, but did not have great posture. He was wearing conservative clothing including a gray Yankees T-shirt, blue shorts with white stripes made of a light material, long socks, and New Balance sneakers. This young man wore glasses.

Based on my observations toward the beginning of the period, I deducted that this boy was somewhat bored and seemed a bit self-conscious. This is because he tended to stare into space. He had an arm up with his elbow on the table and his hand by his mouth, grinding his teeth and biting his nail. When he went up to get juice from the vending machine, he fidgeted with the bottom of his T-Shirt and on it a bit. When he got to the machine, he turned around and sat down again. This was around the time between noon and ten after twelve.

As the lunch period went on, he seemed as if he was trying to fit in with the people at his table. He was listening intently to conversations with people across from him and then would talk to them using exaggerated hand movements. He laughed often at this point and appeared to be having more fun. This story telling and laughing went on for about five minutes, making it about 115.

For the last five minutes of the period, he got fidgety once again. He fixed he shirt, scratched his head, and adjusted himself in his chair. He smiled a few more times at the people across from him and looked around. He seemed more anxious to leave and still unsure of himself at this point. The bell rang and he stood up, adjusted his clothing, and walked out, looking around and pulling on the bottom of his shirt.

I found this exercise to be fairly simple to execute, because I could watch the subject without making it obvious that I was doing so. I enjoyed evaluating his actions afterwards, though I would have liked for our subject to be a bit more exciting. My partner and I did not have different observations. She picked up on several motions and gestures I missed and vice versa, but we evaluated his behavior and came up with very similar conclusions. If I were to interview this young man at a later time I would ask him questions such as Who do you sit with at lunch? Are these people close friends or merely acquaintances? How do you like school? The answers to these questions would give me insight to determine how he was truly feeling during that lunch period. This tool could help Aurora solve her dilemma in that a psychologist could utilize this tool to view her in her natural environment to better understand her dynamics and her ways of thinking. This could assist the psychologist in making an analysis of Aurora and her predicament and he or she could better help her to overcome this problem.

Laws are put in place when communities can no longer be governed by tradition or a shared sense of values. To have a society and more so a landmass of people differing in culture, value and day-to-day rules, a set of laws backed by outcomes and punishment must be installed to ensure respect for one another’s differences. The question of debate is “can it be wrong to obey the law in Canada?” I have chosen yes, the law is not perfect and mistakes and changes throughout history such as women’s and minority’s rights to vote will be among my stronger points. Assisted suicide (Euthanasia) will also be discussed due to its high profile nature challenged throughout many cases as a law contradicting rights in the charter. And finally I will discuss marijuana’s effects and the lack of health issues, which surround its use, and in turn why it is not considered a wrongful drug my many. My goal is to make enough strong points to give reason to believe that at times it can be wrong to follow the law.

Historical Changes dealing with laws

History repeats itself they say, finding laws of the past which are strongly opposed to now is something we can expect of our grandchildren when they view laws we live by presently. Although it is simple to say that law is gradual and changes happen only when people want them to happen, it is not so easy to explain why it has taken so long to give women and minorities the right to a vote. The real question is simple, not giving minorities and women the right to vote now is simply wrong and unlawful, but was it right when it was still a norm in the past. Laws now, protecting everybody from discrimination have existed and changed so much since the beginning of the 0th century, but racism and hate crimes still go unnoticed and the law keeps being bent and broken. When a law is changed it is changed because society feels it needs to be changed, making the previous belief wrong and the present law always questionable. Women have had to struggle for their rights to be known and so have minorities while being oppressed due to a common unfair tradition on the backs of wealthy white men. Democracy caters to all but it has been tested over time. Until everyone casts a vote is it truly a democracy? No. Women gained the right to vote first in 116 Manitoba, it was not until 140 when all descents of women were given the right to vote including Chinese, Japanese and east Indian and then finally in 160 men and women of Inuit descent were registered as votersA1. These dates are surprisingly recent yet have been so slow to recognise that they are simple human rights. While these facts do not directly give the idea that following some laws are wrong they do point out that the laws surrounding major issues in the past have proven to be wrong, so when a woman spoke out for her right to vote in 116 she was looking to change a law and not necessarily break one.

Euthanasia Relating to Assisted Suicide

Euthanasia is a right everyone should have, the right to leave this world in peace. Section 41 of the criminal code1 states that every person who “counsels” a person to commit suicide, or “aids or abets” a person to commit suicide, is guilty of an indictable offence, whether suicide ensues or not, and faces imprisonment for up to 14 years. Section 41 also states that “no person is entitled to consent to have death inflicted on him, and such consent does not affect the criminal responsibility of any person whom death may be inflicted on the person by whom consent is given.” With this in mind the law clearly prevents many who suffer from HIV or other terminal diseases of granting their wishes to die in a smooth conforming manner. Many people infected with HIV know of the loss of dignity or the agonizing death which accompanies the AIDS, yet their option to leave this world before experiencing any dismay is not lawful it is in fact very difficult to find any assistance without the worry of compromising others freedoms. One of the most famous cases dealing with assisted suicide is a case in 1 involving a woman who challenged the Supreme Court of Canada; it was named the Rodriguez case. Suffering from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) she challenged the Charter under sections 14 and 41 arguing that her rights were violated. A Supreme Court rejected her lawsuit in that there was no violation of her rights to liberty and security. In another case more recently, 001 a man named Jim Wakeford from Toronto challenged the same Charter rights pleading for the court to grant him and a medical practitioner of his choice a constitutional exemption from the Criminal Code provisions. His case was stricken out due to it having no sustainable legal basis.

One could argue the same rights in a case of prostitution, after all these are rights dealing with the use and or outcome of your own body. A point made over time is the right to refuse medical treatment. The case of Malette v. Shulman reads self-determination and the concept of individual autonomy lie at the heart of an individual’s right to refuse medical treatment. This would give you the idea that assisted suicide can be accomplished legally, but in order to have a dignified, pain free procedure take place there are many legal issues at stake. To assume suicide for anyone who is suffering can be accomplished legally without help is foolish. Just because you want to end your life doesn’t mean your morals and respect for the laws you have lived with can be traded in. No matter how much the pain or the sadness from family and friends watching the suffering causes, most people are moral and hold dignity and pride among their own pain. The Idea of courts recognising this would seem likely, but too much could be at stake for future cases dealing with possibly murder, using assisted suicide as a defence. There should be a system catering to people who have no hope of survival or avoiding pain without compromising their lifestyles fundamentals. There are too many cases of people trying to meet the ultimate end of their lives, who are veered away from their own instinctive rights by the law’s cold feelings and attitudes for something not easy for anyone to understand. A study4 performed of 1 people who planned to have assisted suicide basically stated that they felt relief after having planned an assisted suicide death. The findings include as follows

- Death through overdose of drugs was the most commonly cited method planned for assisted suicide;

- Those planning to have assisted death stated that they would all end their lives when they felt they had reached the point in their illness when they had no chance of recovery;

- The decision to have assisted death, and the planning associated with that decision, can occur at any stage of HIV and AIDS and is not unique to individuals whose illness has progressed;

- Depression did not appear to be a factor that affected the decision to have an assisted death, and none of the persons living with HIV/AIDS voiced concern that no one cared for them;

- Many were concerned about the loss of control related to future health problems and death that not all pain could be controlled, and the side effects associated with pain control.

These are strong convictions of self-assurance in the matter of death. These people are not unstable and are in most cases well enough to appear in court. They ask that they be given a legal break so that society may not make a mockery of their conclusion. Law biding or not, these people have made decisions and will most likely go through with them, and on the grounds of being legal and moral, both can coexist with some planning and common sense.

Marijuana

Most people have probably tried a cigarette or a glass of wine and even a joint of marijuana in their lifetime. Do these three items belong in society and more so do they require legal boundaries so much as to ban them. Tobacco is taking an obvious hit from the government with good reason, the severe health risks that come with the habit. Sure it can be nice to have a cigarette every now and then, just like a slice of cake with lots of calories that’s high in fat. And sure a glass of wine a day can be good for you as long as your not one of many people who drink and drive, have a dependency problem or even beat their wife out of frustration, anger or are just too blinded by the liquor to realize they have a problem. Very rarely if ever will you hear of a marijuana user who has hit his wife while intoxicated solely on marijuana. Smoking marijuana isn’t the best thing for you by any means, but as a past time it is no worse than the rest of the drugs available to us. In fact its medical problems shadow so far beneath the cigarette and the booze it’s a wonder it’s not legal. A list of facts5 surrounding marijuana and its effects presented into a court are as listed

- Consumption of marijuana is relatively harmless compared to the so called hard drugs and including alcohol and tobacco;

- There exists no hard evidence demonstrating any irreversible organic or mental damage from the consumption of marijuana;

- That cannabis does cause alteration of mental functions and as such, it would not be prudent to drive a car while intoxicated;

- There is no hard evidence that cannabis induces psychoses;

- Cannabis is not an addictive substance;

- Marijuana is not criminogenic in that there is no evidence of a casual relationship between cannabis use and criminality;

- That the consumption of marijuana probably does not lead to “hard drug” use for the vast majority of marijuana consumers, although there appears to be a statistical relationship between the use of marijuana and a variety of other psychoactive drugs;

- Marijuana does not make people more aggressive or violent;

- There have been no recorded deaths from the consumption of marijuana;

- There is no evidence that marijuana causes a motivational syndrome;

- Less than 1% of marijuana consumers are daily users;

- Consumption in so-called “decriminalized states” does not increase out of proportion to states where there is no decriminalization;

- Health related costs of cannabis use are negligible when compared to the costs attributable to tobacco and alcohol consumption.

Having listed all the facts of marijuana, which are clearly in direct opposition with tobacco and alcohol, it is hard to feel a sense of crime when indulging. Although the decriminalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes has lifted some weight of law enforcers there are not enough reasons provided for society to justify a complete ban. Many parents might feel more comfortable knowing that their teen daughter or son is going to a bar to “smoke up” rather than to get drunk. From a parental perspective the hope your siblings can limit their use of either of the drugs would be ideal, but parents shouldn’t have to worry about experimentation taking place through shady characters, but rather a controlled environment. The worry of violence is almost non-existent with the use of marijuana opposed to alcohol granted they are different in their effects. Medically, marijuana has competed with many other types of medication to replace THC (tetrahydrocannabinol/marijuana), but overall THC shows lesser health problems as well as being very cost effective5. Maybe ten years from now it will be looked to as a stress reliever and have the freedom its fellow drugs in the market tobacco and alcohol share, and more importantly the freedom for Canadians to decide which drug they will partake in if called for. For now possession fines are minimal yet the hate is still shared and the hypocrisy still continues.

Although time is in order for any type of change, the changes must start somewhere. The need for something different is common for people and therefore society must work together to decide what is going to help our future rather than alter it. History has given into many of its mistakes but only because of people striving for happiness and fairness. The future of euthanasia as usual will be hard to conclude and always hard to understand, when ones life is in the hands of an oppressor or a law it is hard to feel your rights as a Canadian are being met. With proper structure, even suicide can be less trivial and more understood with the willingness to listen and learn to the basic needs humans share, which have no selfishness attached. As for marijuana, the future will be bright, dark or cloudy to some. People who smoke don’t want to feel wrong for enjoying it, people who don’t smoke marijuana anymore may not want to be faced with its pros and cons and people who have never tried it will always have up to date facts as weather or not they will or will not experience with it. The key point I have made throughout this essay is to establish the need for choice be it a vote, a joint or even suicide. The laws are in place for the people and most importantly by the people, but people make mistakes and so the laws we follow. A Democracy is the right to change and the right to oppose. Laws don’t work for everybody, and not everyone can follow those laws. So to answer the question “can it be wrong to obey the law in Canada”, yes of course it can. People will continue to lie in court rooms to protect somebody and people will always wonder if a politician is telling lies, but we must all understand that laws are made to do the best job they can and are far from perfect. If I were to write this essay question again, using different sources and another array of topics, I would look to smaller cases such as unfair settlements dealing with custody in family law. Also I could find a long list of challenged laws from the past throughout newspapers or journals, which would correspond, to people making changes and laws being moulded. Law is always questionable that’s why people have court hearings and lawyers, if following a law is morally wrong then that is an individual decision which eventually we will all face.

Thorton Wilder’s play Our Town is about a typical lifestyle of a small town life. In the story he links the similarities of two families, the Webb and Gibbs family. Wilder wrote the play in way to show people that even the smallest events in our daily life has great values. This paper will gives examples of how Wilder showed values in regular events but first we must justified what small events are. The smallest events in daily life is really in the eye of the person examining the event, for example a promotion to one person can be a milestone that persons life while to somebody else it is just everyday events that takes place over time. So small events are actually equivalent to a milestone depending on a persons opinion.

The first example to be brought up is when Dr. Gibbs talk with Joe Crowell Jr. fine doc I never think about it at all. Only like you said, it always tells me when it’s going to rain. said Joe What’s it telling you today? Going’ to rain? said Dr.Gibbs No, sir” saids Joe ….. knee ever make a mistake?” ask Dr. Gibbs No sir” replied Joe. This is a daily conversation which is the smallest event in daily life. The values it holds is this boy at first never being wrong about the weather end up never being wrong and graduates head of every class he takes. This conversation is the foundation of the Joe which is now a paper boy that becomes a smart guy and later just dies at war. This conversation will be important to Dr. Gibbs later because he knew this boy who died in war. To Joe Crowell after he dies he will remember the times when he studied to be a waste and remember the conversation when he enjoyed life.

Another example in which Wilder shows value in daily event is When George and Emily talk to each other from their windows. Yeah Emily, what do you think? We might work out a kinda telegraph from your window to mine; and once in a while your could give me a kinda hint or two about one of those algebra problems. I don’t mean the answers, Emily of course not…. Just some little hint…. Said George Oh I think hints are allowed…. George you whistle to me and …. Emily replied. This conversation is ordinary but has values to what will happen in the future. When George ask if he can ask Emily for help on homework, it serve as a reason for George to chat with Emily regularly and so they got the chance to know each other, then love each other and eventually gets marry.

Small event are gateways to important milestones in life.

The next example is when George invites Emily for an ice cream. This event holds value because this is the time period in which Emily started not to like George because of his time is being spent in baseball. They have ice cream and talk it about the fault of George and college. When they talk he decides not to go to college because of Emily, so when George invites Emily for ice cream it was like fixing all the problems Emily had about George and it kept George from leaving for college in the future.

The last example Wilder shows value in daily event is when George is Mrs. Gibbs talk about him getting married and how George will always visit her on Thursday night. This has great value, in the future the family will spend time on Thursdays and so the family bond will stay strong and they will always take care of each other.

There that was the four example that I found to show how Wilder succeeds in his attempt to show value of daily life.

I think that the few Acts that I read from ?Macbeth? are very sad and have a lot of suspense and conflict. That is why my ten songs highlight the already mentioned characteristics of the story.

Act I demonstrates the concepts of appearances versus reality it also has a lot of conflict, suspense, and mystery. In this Act Macbeth discovers his dark side, because he and Lady Macbeth are planning to kill the king so Macbeth can take his place. I think that Act I is the one that has more suspense because no body really knows if Macbeth is going to commit the crime. ?Alone, Macbeth begins to have second thoughts about his murderous plan.? This quote makes it even more mysterious for the reader, which is why I think that this Act has a lot of suspense. In my CD, I selected these two songs ?Suicide? and ?I do it for you.? to highlight the concept of evil.

Act II is a little sadder that Act I because Macbeth had the chance of not committing the murder but he did, he committed the murder, ?Suddenly a dazed and terrified Macbeth enters, carrying the bloody daggers that he used to murder Duncan.? and now he is feeling guiltiness. ?He imagines a voice that warns Macbeth shall sleep no more and is too afraid to return to the scene of the crime.? For these reasons, I selected these two songs. ?You got it bad? and ?I am walking away.?

Act III has a lot of mystery and confusedness since the witches told Macbeth that Banquo?s sons would be kings. Macbeth persuades two murderers to kill Banquo and his son. Therefore, that shows that Macbeth is really an evil person. Because of that, I chose these two songs; ?I?ll go with you? and ?Addictive,? which reveal the evilness and the mysteries of this Act.

Act IV is one of the most interesting Acts because Macbeth meets with the three witches demanding them to tell him his future, the witches raise three apparitions. The first , an armed head, next a bloody child ,the third apparition tells him that he will never be defeated until the trees of Birnam Wood move toward his castle. After all this, Macbeth now feels confident, but at the end, everything will go bad. For this Act, I selected the following songs ?All my life? and ?Nothing,? which reveal all the mystery and anger of Macbeth.

Act V is one of the saddest Acts because all of the things that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth did to gain power are now all gone; now they are both dead. Lady Macbeth is starting to hallucinate ?Lady Macbeth appears to be washing imagined blood from her hands.? Macbeth is going crazy his soul has been stolen, he is killed internally.? While Macbeth prepares for battle, the doctor reports that he cannot cure Lady Macbeth, whose illness is mental, not physical.? his wife, Lady Macbeth, is now dead and he is all alone, then he discovers that Birnam Wood seems to be moving toward the castle, Macbeth is now fearing that the prophecies have deceived him. ?He decides to leave the castle to fight and die on the battlefield.? In my CD I chose there two songs to highlight the sadness of this Act ?I will always love you? and ?unbreak my heart.?

Ignorance is bliss a simple, yet brilliant phrase commonly overlooked in today’s society. Is ignorance really bliss? In the plays Gross Indecency The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, by Moises Kaufman, and Wit, by Margaret Edson, show how this saying can and cannot be true. Kaufman uses the brilliant mind of an artist to show how his ignorance due to his superior intellect subsequently leads to his destruction, while Edson uses the character of a brilliant English professor dying of cancer to show how her above-average knowledge of the world leads to an exaggerated mental struggle before her death.

Gross Indecency uses the character of Oscar Wilde to show how his unique and brilliant understanding of human interaction leads to the destruction of his life as an artist and as an important pillar of society. Wilde falls under public scrutiny when he is tried for the crimes of gross indecency with young male members of the English society. The public views these relationships very literally, and begins to label Oscar as a homosexual; to him a term suiting to a lab rat. However, Oscar does not see himself in the same light. He views his relationships as beautiful works of art and reflects his feelings in several of his publications. Wilde’s ignorance about the crimes he was committing leaves him vulnerable to the prosecution because in his eyes, he cannot defend himself against a crime he feels he did not commit, thus he is slaughtered in court because he fails to see the seriousness of the accusations placed upon him. In his case, his ignorance of the laws of England led to his destruction. For him, ignorance turned out to be deadly.

Edson shows the exact opposite of Wilde’s case in her examination of the last portion of the life of Doctor Vivian Bearing, a brilliant professor whose understanding of the world around her is anything but ignorant. She has spent her entire life looking at everything around her in an overly literal light. Because she is able to bring the metaphysical down to the level of physical through thorough analysis, she is capable of understanding everything around her. This incredible understanding, however, turns against her in the final stages of her life. When she is in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment, she has a much better understanding about her physical and mental condition than would regular person due to her increased ability to understand the technical jargon of Dr. Kelekian and Jason. Because she is aware that her condition is leading to imminent death, she relinquishes any hope of recovery and maintains this negative attitude until her death. Had she been ignorant to the seriousness of her condition, she would have believed that she actually had a chance of survival when told so by the doctors. This positive attitude could have had a placebo effect on her and actually might have bettered her condition. I this case, her ignorance would have been bliss. However, Vivian is anything but ignorant, which destroys any hope for her survival because of her overly negative attitude.

We see here that ignorance can be either detrimental or beneficial, thus the question of ignorance being bliss remains unanswered. One must judge for oneself whether ignorance in one’s specific case would be bliss, because it could go either way depending on the individual circumstances of the situation.

From looking at the first chapter of Dickens’ novel, Hard Times, it can be seen that the author holds a negative view on the system of education used at the time.

Thomas Gradgrind, the schoolteacher, abruptly introduces the chapter with a monologue, the nature of which reveals him to be devoid of imagination. This is reflected in the constant repetition of his belief that, “Facts alone are wanted in life.” This opinion is also aired at the end of the chapter, representing Gradgrind’s unchanging nature.

Dickens persuades the reader to dislike Gradgrind, as he dislikes what he represents, by using a number of methods. When Gradgrind rudely refers to educated children as “reasoning animals” this further enforces the reader’s immediate dislike for him. The statement also serves to show the lack of individuality that he strives to attain in his classroom as he renders the children to a state free from characteristics. This opinion is repeated when he states that everything apart from facts should be “rooted out”, obviously including personal beliefs and thoughts. By referring to Gradgrind impersonally as “the speaker”, the reader is also encouraged to feel cold towards him.

The room where the children study is described to be a “plain, bare, monotonous vault”, lacking any stimulation for the minds of the children. Through this rhetorical statement, which uses repetition of three to stress the featureless nature of the room, Dickens presents his view that schools at the time were intentionally created as factories whose purpose was to manufacture identical “educated” beings.

Repugnant imagery is used to describe Gradgrind’s physically, his forefinger, forehead, coat, legs and shoulders are all described as being “square”. By using a mathematical figure to represent the schoolteacher’s clothes and body parts, Dickens further demonstrates his monotonous nature, free from creativity. In addition to this, it is stated that Gradgrind’s neck cloth is “trained to take him by the throat with an unaccommodating grasp”, showing the negative power that he exudes over even something as small as his clothes.

Dickens once again uses repetition in the phrase, “The emphasis was helped by”, in reference to Gradgrind’s distasteful features. This exposes his authoritarian temperament, as each time that the phrase is repeated four times, a new level of control is totalled.

Dickens employs contrast of imagery to firstly unpleasantly describe Gradgrind’s head as being covered with hair “which bristled on the skirts of his bald head”, and secondly to liken it to “the crust of a plum pie”. This stark distinction exists to expose how unpleasant Gradgrind is.

Lastly, the children in the classroom are referred to in Gradgrind’s own view as “little vessels … ready to have imperial gallons of facts poured into them until they were full to the brim.” This mathematical, controlled feel which is applied to everything in Gradgrind’s classroom shows how Dickens views the education system as a process by which the innocence and imagination of a child is destroyed.
