The basic living unit of your body is the cell. Every structure in your body is composed of a collection of many different cells, each performing its function in support of the overall success or failure of your human body. In all, your body contains about 100 trillion cells, each working independently so that as a whole you will be healthy. Each cell is especially adapted to perform one particular function. Life and health are the balanced interaction of all body cells. Cells group to form organs, tissue, bone, and other parts that make up our physical being. Each individual cell consumes fuel, produces energy, and eliminates waste. When given the necessary components of minerals, vitamins and a healthy mental attitude-our body, in the totality of its cells, can maintain a perfect balance of life and health. Ladies and gentlemen, fellow Toastmasters and friends, allow me to share with you my topic titled “You are what you Eat”.

What do you eat ladies and gentlemen ?

Your body takes food, digest it, capture its nutrients and transport these nutrients to your cells. Your cells use these nutrients to perform all the functions that they do in your body. What you eat becomes the cell structure of your body and the cell structure determines your physical-healthy or unhealthy-nature. This is why you should be aware of what you eat. If you eat unhealthy foods, you generate unhealthy and toxic cells, which means that you will become unhealthy and toxic. Your cells need certain nutrients, some of which are found in the food you eat for eg protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals, water, and enzymes.

Protein, carbohydrate, and fat are known as macronutrients because we need a lot of them (macro means large) to stay healthy. Unfortunately, a lot of the food that we eat today lack many vitamins and minerals. Protein is essential to maintaining the structure and function of all life-the word itself is derived from the Greek word protos, meaning primary or first. Protein is vital for growth, repair and maintenance of muscles, blood, internal organs, skin, hair, and nails.

Most people think only of meat when considering protein sources, and meat is an excellent source of protein. Unfortunately, depending solely on meat is problematic.

Meat contains too much fat, which leads to problems associated with fat obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and other problems. Meat can also overwork the liver and result in too much ammonia which affect cell reproduction. So, if you cut back on meat, where can you get protein?

Tuna is an excellent source, as are soybean products and whole wheat grains. Too much meat-meaning meat everyday-hurts your cells, and thus your health. Having a balance meal and making an effort not to make meat the centre of our diets is essential. Try to eat only two to three servings of lean meat a week as this will help to avoid a catalogue of health problems.

Carbohydrate-rich food come from plants and is the main source of energy for all body functions. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple and complex. Sugar is an example of simple carbohydrate and is found in food such as carbonated soft drinks, most desserts, candies and similar foods. Complex carbohydrate (starch and fibre) is found in whole grain breads, spaghetti, rice noodles, barley, potatoes, and other such foods.

Simple carbohydrate like sugar is unhealthy. They provide calories and short-term energy, but no nutrients. They can contribute to obesity and high blood pressure and result in tooth decay. More dangerously, simple sugars can affect our immune systems by decreasing the bodys ability to destroy bacteria and fight infection.

Complex carbohydrate on the other hand, provides us with benefits. They are the best energy source we have. Fibre, which is a complex carbohydrate, provides additional benefits, including prevention of constipation and haemorrhoids, improved handling of diabetes, and many gastrointestinal benefits.

Although many people strive to eat a no-Fat diet, fat is important to your cells. It is an energy source, makes your food taste good, carries certain nutrients and insulates your nerves and bones.

Unhealthy fats are known as saturated fats. Saturated fats include fats found in animal foods and the coconut plant. You should avoid eating large quantities of foods that contain saturated fats. Other types of fat are better for you, and some have health benefits. These are monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, and polyunsaturated fats such as vegetable and fish oils. An easy way to know which type of fat you are eating is simply to observe its form.

The more liquid it is, the more unsaturated it is and the healthier it is; the more solid it is, the more saturated it is and the unhealthier it is. Thus, fats derived from plants (such as vegetable oils), which are liquid, are largely unsaturated and healthier, while fats derived from animals (such as lard), which are solid, are largely saturated.

So what are the steps to a good diet ?

Don’t skip meals

Eat and chew slowly

Bake or boil food instead of frying

Don’t go back for seconds

Purchase low-calorie or low-fat foods

So ladies and gentlemen, if you are not eating healthly, you should start taking steps to change your diet. There are only two choices; make progress or make excuses. You get out of life what you put in.

maginative journeys is not only a concept, it’s the foundation of creativity and the mechanism of ingenuity. It transports us to parallel dimensions of fantasy, imagination, speculation and inspiration. Imaginative journeys shape and broaden our understanding of the world and ourselves. Two texts which clearly depict the notion of Imaginative journeys is “Daffodils” by Williams wordsworth and “The lime tree bower my prison” by coldridge, both composers use various techniques to convey the concept of imaginative journeys and broaden our understanding of the world and ourselves.

Daffodils is a dazzling and insightful text to utilize when exploring the concept of journeys as the composer has clearly demonstrated the concept of imaginative journeys through various techniques and better helps responder to understand the concept at hand. Daffodils is a delightful, romantic text, which stimulates the imagination making the responder feel engulfed by the beauty presented by the imagery of this imaginative journey. This poem has an imaginative and romantic approach towards it and takes the responder on a fantastical, imaginative voyage. Daffodils explores imaginative journeys through an abundance of figurative language, which he uses to stimulate the imagination of the responder to have a more vivid approach on the voyage he is taking us on for example personification, ‘fluttering and dancing in the breeze,’ which the composer uses to give his imagery extra dimension and give the responder a more life like approach to the imaginative journey which he is portraying. He reinforces this effect with similes and metaphors ‘ I wandered lonely as a cloud’ and ‘golden daffodils’ to further pursue his notion of imaginative journeys by giving us a greater concrete incentive so we may really empathize with the text. Another path the poet approaches in illustrating his concept of imaginative journeys is through aural devices such as the manipulation of tone and the emphasis on rhyme and rhythm. The poet uses tone and first person narration to make this text more personal, to emphasize to the responder the emotions felt through out this journey as the poem starts with a somber tone ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud” and finishes with then my heart with pleasure fills. The emotional change although is an inner journey it is an imaginative journey to the viewer as we build an emotional connection and imagine the feelings of the persona. The rhyme scheme of ababcc and rhythmic techniques emphasize the attractiveness of the imagery and give the poem a sense of fluidity like that of the fluidity of a physical journey, this subconsciously creates a sense of walking on a journey through our imaginations.

We can undoubtedly see the concept of imaginative journeys being portrayed in Daffodils and how the composer manipulates different techniques in conveying his notion of imaginative journeys. We can equally evidently see the notion of imaginative journeys in the lime tree bower as he begins with a concrete experience and is left behind, while his friends embark on a physical journey and he discovers that he may travel the same road even more beneficially through his imagination. Like wordsworth coleridge also takes us on an imaginative journey through his intense and emotional imagery and both use the concept of nature to manipulate its beauty and burn visual images of the beauty which they perceive in our imaginations.

Coleridge like wordsworth also applies great emphasis on imagery, really getting down to the roots of the descriptiveness, making his imagination almost realistic for us ‘the roaring dell, o’erwooded, narrow, deep, and only speckled by the mid day sun’ informing the responder of his fantastical journey whilst simultaneously giving reader mechanism to travel the journey alongside him. Unlike wordsworth, coleridge has explored imaginative journeys through blank verse poetry he does not use any specific structural devices which suggests a more naturalness to the poem, however both styles depict the notion of imaginative journeys effectively. Coleridge has written in conversational form, whereas, wordsworth has written in first person, but both derive that emotional connection with the responder by making the text more personal. Coleridge uses the structure of a reflective poem thus making it more personal to really appeal to the responder’s emotions and get the responder involved along the journey. The tone which is evident in the lime tree bower highlights the personas emotions such as with a falling cadence in the lime tree bower ‘well they are gone’ this helps the responders imaginative journey also feel the same emotions as the persona as they are both on the journey simultaneously.

After the scrutiny of both poems we can indisputably observe the motivation, which provoked me to include this poem in my portfolio as it lucidly portrays the concept of imaginative journeys and shapes and broadens our understanding of the world and ourselves.

I’m from the Czech Republic and have been living in Neath for a year, working as an au pair and studying English in the College’s Queen Street Centre. The main reason for returning to education is that I decided that I would like to be a primary teacher.

When I was a child I had never thought about my future career. Stories and fairy tales influenced me and I wanted to have various adventures. Then I started to attend basic school and all my dreams changed. My plans for my future career changed from day to day. I wanted to be an actress, a cook, a scientist, a postman, an artist and a teacher. Later my parents advised me to go on to secondary school education.

During secondary school I began to think about my future more seriously. I began to realise I wanted to work with people; I wanted to do something meaningful for them. I liked listening to my friends’ problems I cared for them. Sometimes I was helpful to them, for example to my best friend Alena. Alena’s father died when she was ten. He died because of serious family problems. For years after her dad died she did not have much contact with her mother. I was able to help her to start talking to her mother again and now they are friends. I didn’t judge them or blame anyone for what had happened, because I was outside the situation; but I was still concerned for them both. I was interested in finding a solution. I found I had the skills to talk to a person a lot older then myself like parents, head teachers, and inspectors. I was respectful towards her and she responded.

livepaperhelp.com

I am non-judgemental, because I feel strongly that one should accept people as they are and that everyone is entitled to be themselves. I don’t like it when I hear gossip and I try not to do it myself. I think an effective teacher treats a child as a person not just a pupil. Not all children are easy to like and every child has individual needs. The duty as a teacher is not to judge but to give each one an equal opportunity.

I decided to be a primary teacher, because I like children. I like playing games with them, using fantasy, reading fairy tales and doing drama with them. I want to teach young children, because they are more natural and they have lots of imagination. I want to share my knowledge and skills with the children and make them happy, content and confident.

I have already some experience as an au pair. I looked after two young boys who were attending a local primary school and I helped them with any homework they had and reinforced their knowledge of maths and English. When I taught them it made me feel good. Living in another family’s home was a good learning experience for both the family and myself and I adapted very well to the new working environment and different culture. I proved that I was reliable and trustworthy with the whole family and I felt comfortable being with them and working for them. I think to do the job well, au pair need a “sense of humour”, patience and a mature attitude to assuming responsibility. I made up games, we played football, they liked to read fairy tales together and they really liked me.

I always tried to help them with any problems and they always told everything to me. For example, things that happened to them in school, how they fought in the toilet, which girls they like, things that they wouldn’t tell their parents. We were good friends and I was good company for them, because I could relate to them. Sometimes I think I am like a child and I love in it.

When I came to Wales, my English wasn’t so good but still I smiled even if I didn’t understand. I spent my first months in my room and I learned English myself. I had big book for beginners and I finished it quite quickly. I think knowing a foreign language is part of good education. People who are able to speak more than one language have better opportunities to get a job and I think I have this ability it helps me to work under pressure and I enjoy it. I can say now that I can speak English as my second language and I can speak German as my third language. When I came to Neath I had new experiences, everything was new and after few months I became more confident not only in a foreign language but in life itself.

It is really important when working with children to show respect and understanding, also to be emotionally and physically stable. The teacher is someone children can trust and also teachers should be in control of themselves, even if they are angry or up set. I think an effective teacher doesn’t have favourites and shouldn’t neglect anyone. Good teachers don’t lose their temper, they are hard working and fully dedicated to the class e.g. turns up on time, lesson is well prepared, and they keep their promises and don’t forget what is expected.

One of my teachers in primary school in Czech, Mr Engelhart, made a very big difference to my reading. He taught Czech and History. He inspired me by encouraging me to read and explaining why I need to read more. I read lots of books after that and I could analyse them. He had good qualities as a teacher for me, which changed my life.

I can work both in a team or if necessary by myself. I can be a leader, because I am supportive, have common sense, honest, sensitive, thoughtful, loyal and one can really depend on me. I am strong when it comes to important things. For example, I can take difficult decisions. One the one hand, teaching is a demanding and sometimes stressful job but one the other hand, I helps me to communicate well with young people and I enjoy that part of teaching.

My plan after completing the course is to study BA (Hons) Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status in Swansea Institute. However I don’t know where I like to teach if in Czech or in Britain.

Chivalry was an ideal way of behavior for nobility during the Middle Ages. In Gawain and the Green Knight, the main character Gawain strives to live up to these ideals. These ideals, however, are too hard for Gawain to live up to at the time. When Gawain stumbles, he is able to make himself a better man because of this experience. He shows us that man makes mistakes, but a great man is one who recognizes that he is wrong and tries to learn from the mistake. By learning from his mistakes, he is coming closer to the ideal of chivalry than if he tried to hide them.

Chivalry was not intended to be restrict the nobility from being the people that they really are. Instead, it was meant to help them maintain their Christian ideals. It was supposed to help them to live up to the commandments that God had given to them. The code was supposed to help the nobility to become closer to their God. But, it made things for them extremely difficult, because they were viewed as inferior if they did not always live up to the code. The code was very hard to follow all of the time for the nobility.

Gawain tries to live up to the chivalrous ideals of his time. The problem is that these ideals are too hard for a man to always fulfill. Gawain was not a superhuman, and therefore could not always do exactly what he was supposed to do. He was, however, one of the greatest men of his time. The Green Knight refers to the goodness of Gawain when he says, “She made trial of a man most faultless by far” (6). Gawain was one of the best men of his time. He was respected everywhere. He strived with all of his might to follow the ideals of chivalry to the fullest. So, if there was anyone who should be able to live up to the ideals of chivalry, it should have been Gawain.

Although Gawain should be the one man that is able to hold to all of the ideals of chivalry, he is not able to do so. He fails while attempting to conform to the chivalrous ideals. Gawain does not fail because he is a bad person, he fails because he is a human being and , therefore, is not perfect. No matter how hard he tried, he was bound to make a mistake simply because he is only a man. Gawain admits to his failure when he says, “Now am I faulty and false, that fearful was ever Of disloyalty and lies,” (8-8). Gawain recognizes that he was not able to live up to the standards of chivalry. He had tried as hard as humanly possible and failed. Gawain was one of the most respected and loyal men of his time. If he is not able to follow the code of chivalry, what mortal man could be able to do so.

livepaperhelp.com

Gawain was a great man that earned the respect of his peers. He was as close to the ideal of chivalry as humanly possible. Yet, Gawain still failed in his attempts at being the chivalrous knight. If one of the greatest men of the time is not able to be completely chivalrous, how could any other man think of being able to meet all the obligations that it entails? The answer is that they could not possibly think of being wholly chivalrous. It is in human nature to make mistakes. The only thing that could live up to these ideals completely would be God.

The nobles of the Middle Ages were not able to live up to the ideals that their society tells them to follow. No matter how hard they try, it is in their nature to make mistakes and fail. When people realize this, they become discouraged with the ideals. They will give up on trying to live up to these ideals and only put on a show when they need to do so. They will only be trying to cover up the fact that they are making mistakes. In reality, they will not even be trying to live up to the ideals of chivalry. This will eliminate the whole purpose of having a code of conduct.

With the people no longer being faithful to and striving to maintain the ideals of chivalry, there will be a great amount of immorality taking place. The people will be sneaky and deceiving in the way they go about breaking the rules. The will do this so that they avoid being looked down on as failures. The want to be looked up to with reverence and as heroes, not as failures. This will make them try to hide what they really are and prevent them from improving themselves. Which will make things worse than they were before the code of chivalry was put into place. The whole point of the system, which is to respect other nobles and further the Christian cause, is not going to be lived up to. In order for them to get back to their original ideals and again live up to the ideals that they have set, there would need to be changes to the way they went about living up to their ideals.

The system of chivalry was not perfect. It’s ideals were good, it was just too hard for any man to be able to always live up to them. And if a man made a mistake he was looked down upon and disgraced. This led to people covering up their mistakes and not learning from them, unless they were caught and publicly humiliated. A change had to be made to stop the spread of immorality and deceit. Gawain shows us the way to do so after he fails in his incident with the Green Knight. Instead of hiding the fact that he messed up, Gawain makes the fact that he failed known publicly. In addition he wore the ladies’ green belt on him at all times as a reminder to himself and everyone else of his failures (505-5 ). When he returns home, Gawain approaches King Arthur and tells him of the belt, “This is the badge of false faith that I was found in there, And I must bear it on my body till I breathe my last” (50-5 0). Gawain steps outside of the normal behavior of the nobility of his time and admits his mistake. He made a mistake and instead of making the fault worse by lying about it, he learns from it and uses it to make himself a better man.

Gawain, by breaking the code of chivalry and learning from his mistake, becomes a better man. Since he wears the green belt as a reminder of his blunder, he is respected by his peers even more than he already was. The rest of the knights of the round table, seeing what Gawain does, wear there own green belts as a sign of respect (5 5-5 8). The rest of the knights realize that Gawain is improving himself by admitting to his mistake and learning from it. Gawain has now set a new standard for the rest of the knights to follow. Gawain is a trendsetter for making changes to the way that nobility acts when they have failed to live up to everything that they have promised they would.

Not only is Gawain more respected after his mistake than he was before, but he also learns from his mistake and knows that he has to correct his faults. He will strive to stay away from what caused him problems. Gawain says, “For where a fault is made fast, it is fixed evermore” (5 ). He recognizes that he is a man and is therefore faulty. This is the first thing he has to do to make himself better. Men can only try to correct their shortcomings after they realize they have them. Gawain makes people see this because he was supposed to be the most chivalrous knight, and not even he could always be perfect. This made people realize that they had their own faults that needed to be corrected. Gawain starts a new trend with the knights of the round table to look at themselves for their own faults before the criticize other people for their shortcomings as chivalrous nobility.

Gawain’s new approach is one that is a breath of fresh air to the stiff way of doing things that is called chivalry. His actions show that people are going to make mistakes and not always follow the code, but when they do stumble they have to pick themselves up, learn from the experience and not be ashamed that it happened. Instead of hiding their faults, the knights should embrace them and work with them to make themselves better people. By doing this, the men will be coming closer to the original intent of the code of chivalry than they would by hiding their discretions and making the same mistake repeatedly.

Gawain and the Green Knight shows us that men are flawed and will never be able to fully live up to standards of conduct. But, shaming them for making mistakes only makes things worse. Men can only become better people by making mistakes and learning from them. They have to look at themselves and see that they are not perfect and accept that fact. Recognizing and trying to correct their mistakes will help people to behave in the way that the code of chivalry intended them to act.

Apartheid

“Apartheid is the social and political policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by the white minority government in South Africa from 148 until the early 10s. The word apartheid means ‘separateness’ in the Afrikaans language, and it described the rigid racial division between the governing white minority population and the nonwhite majority population.” The National Party introduced apartheid as part of their campaign in the 148 elections, and when they won, apartheid became the governing political policy for South Africa until the early 10s. The practice of segregation in South Africa; however, extends to the beginning of white settlement in South Africa in 165. When the National Party came into control, varied practices of racial segregation were installed and made into a uniform set of national laws.

The Population Registration Act of 150 made the achievement of the apartheid policy possible. This act put all South Africans into three different categories Bantu (black Africans), white, and Coloured (of mixed race). A fourth category of Asians was later added. There were also a series of laws in the 150s that elaborated the system of apartheid. “The Group Areas Act of 150 assigned races to different residential and business sections in the urban areas, and The Acts of 154 and 155 restricted nonwhite residents to specific areas. These laws further restricted the already limited right of black Africans to own land, entrenching the white minority’s control of over 80 percent of South African land.” One apartheid restriction required all blacks to carry a “pass book” stating their legal residence and workplace. This was extremely repressive, and those that were stopped by police without their proper papers could be summarily expelled to the countryside. In 15; however, the government passed the Natives (Abolition of Passes and Coordination of Documents) Act. This new law tightened pass regulations, renamed the passes reference books, and required women to carry them for the first time.

There were also other laws that prohibited most social contracts between the races. “The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act of 14 barred interracial marriages, and the Immorality Act of 150 prohibited sexual relations between different races. The 15 Reservation of Separate Amenities Act permitted the systematized permitted the systematic segregation of train stations, buses, movies theaters, hotels, and virtually all other public facilities, and barred the courts from overturning such restrictions.” Private schools for black persons were closed so black children were forced to attend a separate, inferior education system.

livepaperhelp.com

“The government continued to implement new apartheid regulations in the 160s, 170s, and 180s. The Bantu Laws Amendment Act of 164, for example, gave the government complete authority to banish black from any urban area and from white agricultural areas.” During the 170s, the government stripped thousands of blacks of their South African citizenship when it granted “nominal independence to their homelands.” In the 180s the government eased some apartheid regulations such as pass laws, but then ordered more systematic enforcement of restrictions on squatting. This had the same effect as restricting black residence in the cities.

Apartheid took out a huge human cost. While trying to create completely segregated residential areas, the South African government destroyed thousands of homes. Because of this, tens of thousands of people were forced to live in small substandard houses in bleak townships and poor service neighborhoods. Black families also broke apart because of limits of blacks in urban areas. Sometimes, one parent might have a permit and another may not causes a family member to stay behind.

Black political groups, sometimes supported by small numbers of sympathetic whites, opposed apartheid using a variety of methods. “Antiapartheid groups such as the African National Congress (ANC), Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC), and the United Democratic Front relied on tactics such as strikes, demonstrations, sabotage, and other forms of violence. Nevertheless, resistance usually resulted in severe reprisals by the government. Many international organizations and groups were in total opposition to apartheid. “In 174 South Africa was expelled from the United Nations General Assembly, and in 177 the United Nations imposed a arms embargo on South Africa. In 185 the widespread international sanctions campaign culminated with sever nee sanctions imposed by the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom.”

South America indeed felt the pressure to dismantle the apartheid system, and in the early 10s President F. W. de Klerk began to do so. Black opposition groups such as the ANC and the PAC were legalized, and some political prisoners, such as ANC leader Nelson Mandela, were ordered to be released. “In 14 a new interim constitution was adopted, and free general elections were held for the first time in South African history. The constitution prohibited racial and other forms of discrimination and established limits on government power to prevent abuses such as those that occurred during apartheid.”

Observe an interaction and record your impressions of the listening barriers present and how they affected the communication process. Often it is easier to be objective if you analyze an interaction in which you are not actively participating, but are permitted to overhear. For example, you could observe an interaction between two teammates on your MBA team, between two of your roommates, or between two of your friends when you are all together. If you prefer, you may analyze an interaction in which you are participating. You may have to work harder to be objective, but may find the exercise to be even more useful to you. Your analysis should be about two pages. ANALYSIS OF AN INTERACTION

I definitely picked up one of my bad listening habits from my father. He would often try to do more than one thing at a time. However, I also picked up the ability to block out noise. Growing up with three brothers and two sisters there was usually a lot going on around the house. This excitement gave me many chances to practice blocking out other stimuli while trying to listen. My mother listened to me very well. When we spoke, she rarely would be doing something else. I could count on my mother knowing what I had said after saying it. On the other hand, my father would often ask questions that I had already answered or need certain things repeated because of his tendency to attempt to do something else while also listening to me. My listening habits are definitely affected by my childhood experiences and can be seen in my tendency to attempt to do other things while listening and my ability to block out noise and capture the message clearly.

The protagonist of “A Secret Sorrow” by Karen Van Der Zee has a very different view of relationship than the protagonist of “A Sorrowful Woman” by Gail Godwin. The woman in “A Secret Sorrow” has the image of a beautiful intimate relationship between a man and a woman of a loving husband, children and married life. In contrast, the woman in “A Sorrowful Woman” views a marriage relationship between man and a woman as something that restricts her from the freedom she used to have before her marriage. As a result of their different points of view, these two characters end up in different situations even though some of their conflicts are similar. However, both of them resolve their problems differently.

First of all, both women had psychological problems, but each one’s issue was unique. Faye, the protagonist of “A Secret Sorrow” had a psychological conflict within herself because she was not able to have any children. As a result of this conflict, she ended the relationship she had with her boyfriend, and she ended their future plans. Her view of a relationship was getting married and having children with the man she loved. Because she could not conceive Faye did not want her future husband, Kai, to be with her. She knew how much Kai loved the children. She didn’t want to snatch the opportunity of Kai’s having children with someone else. In contrast, the unknown protagonist of Godwin’s story had a child and a loving husband, but she was not interested in her family. She felt like a prisoner, and she wanted to be free. She did not

To NBC

I am writing to express my disappointment with NBC. As a consumer, NBC viewer and Employee of a Franchised Automobile dealership, I am outraged at your negative reporting on so many subjects. I want to voice my strong disappointment on your airing of NBC Dateline Investigation on car dealers. Its obvious that you and the media in general, like to take a few bad” situations on any given subject and make it look like the industry standard. In my dealer finance office the only practice that we adhere to is to assist the customers needs and fulfill there auto buying needs, in an business like manner and we fully disclose all finance options that are available to each and every client in their current credit situation.

When was the last time that you had a show on the 4 % of new car buyers who were satisfied with their dealership and the purchase? Even Consumer reports found high customer satisfaction at new car dealerships. When was the last time that you aired a show on consumer credit and how millions of consumers have below average credit causing them to be a greater credit risk and to pay higher rates due to their own negligence in taking due care with their finances and credit or the banking industry the has overwhelmed buyers with credit cards bringing Personal Debt to an all time high?

On a personal level I will do all I can to boycott NBC; I will encourage other individuals to stop watching NBC. Our corporation (three dealerships in two states) will boycott NBC and affiliates by pulling local advertising, urging the dealers associations, manufactures, suppliers and venders to do the same.

He convinced Dick and Mac McDonald, the owners of McDonalds Restaurant, San Bernardino, California opening up several up several restaurants. Ray Kroc thus opened the Des Plaines restaurant in 155. First days revenues-$66.1! No longer a functioning restaurant, the Des Plaines building is now a museum containing McDonalds memorabilia and artifacts, including the Multimixer!

Since introducing the Happy Meal in 17, kids visits have been made more special generating interest for collecting Happy Meals toys and boxes the world over. Also now a days, one can see McDonalds in more non-traditional locations like Wal-Mart, Amoco and Chevron stations, with full menu offerings and dining room seating, just like youll find in a traditional McDonalds.

McDonalds has always been a franchising Company and has relied on its franchisees to play a major role in its success. Approximately 70% of McDonalds worldwide restaurant businesses are owned and operated by independent businessmen and women as franchisees. McDonalds continues to be recognized as a premier franchising company around the world. McDonalds has been perennially named as Entrepreneur Magazines number one franchise.

McDonalds franchising system is built on the premise that the Corporation can be successful only if their franchisees are successful first. Success for McDonalds Corporation flows from the success of its business partners. McDonalds franchise only to individuals, not to corporations, partnerships, or passive investors. McDonalds is an equal opportunity franchiser, with a proven track record of franchising to all segments of society. In the U.S., minorities and women currently represent over 4% of the franchisees and 70% of all applicants in training.

McDonalds is the worlds community restaurant. They have a long-standing commitment to a workforce that is diverse. They believe in developing and maintaining a diverse workforce that will strengthen the McDonalds system. Diversity at McDonalds is understanding, recognizing and valuing the differences that make each person unique.

McDonalds has been recognized for its many contributions in the following areas

McDonalds is committed to recognizing the talents and job performance of all employees and values the contributions that come from people with different backgrounds and perspectives.

McDonalds commitment to social responsibility is an important part of their heritage and has become increasingly more important as their business has grown to span 118 countries. McDonald’s is focused on and committed to doing the right thing for the local communities in which they operate and for the customers they serve. Their philosophy of doing good and giving back has always been at the heart and soul of the McDonalds business -like French fries and hamburgers. McDonalds was setting the standard for social responsibility, and is a leader in this regard.

McDonalds has restaurant locations in 118 countries all over the world. They have modified their business by serving according to their local market needs. They have adapted to the needs of the people of the countries they serve taking into account the religious and cultural beliefs of their customers in the markets they are serving. As an example let me note the expansion of McDonald’s in India. McDonalds India opened its doors to India in October 16. Now McDonald’s has established family restaurants in Bombay, Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Ludhiana, Jaipur and now on the Delhi-Mathura highway. As a respect to the cultural and religious believes of the billions of Indian’s, McDonald’s does not serve beef in its menu. They have developed lamb burgers as a replacement. McDonalds in India has specially developed a range of 100% pure vegetarian food to offer vegetarians, a choice. Even the mayonnaise used in the items is eggless. McDonald’s is likely to extend the results of their experimentation with vegetarian products in India, the world over, as more and more people are becoming health conscious. Taking in to account the Indian palate, McDonald’s has prepared the choicest of products using spices appreciated by the customers. Due to the lack of proper infrastructure for storage and transportation under controlled conditions, McDonalds is setting up unique Cold Chain. By doing this McDonald’s is committed to providing quality products while supporting other Indian businesses. The Cold Chain is necessary to maintain the integrity of food products and retain their freshness and nutritional value. Cold Chain refers to the procurement, warehousing, transportation and retailing of food products under controlled temperatures. Setting up the Cold Chain has involved the transfer of state-of-the-art food processing technology by McDonalds and its international suppliers to pioneering Indian entrepreneurs, who have now become an integral part of the Cold Chain.

On the SWOT analysis, the following has been identified as the Strengths,

Brand name, Franchise network, Pricing, Service and Satisfaction, Customer relationship and Partnership. The following has been identified as its Weakness, management structure, opening too many new stores that compete against each other instead of other rivals, big investment in real estates because it owns not only the land but also the buildings in many of its franchised locations world wide. There are quite a few Opportunities for McDonald’s that I have identified, namely, expanding the number of products it serves, attracting health conscious people by providing vegetarian menus, implementing as a market test successful formulas that has worked at different locations world wide, being more competitive in pricing and promotion. McDonald’s has a lot of threats from many competitors world wide. The field of fast food has so many new aspirants that it has become highly competitive. Biggest threats are from rivals like Burger King, Wendy’s, Carl’s Junior, Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Del Taco and many others. McDonald’s has to be one step ahead in order to wade away these competitors successfully. They need to be aggressive and improve the quality and also increase the menu choices for all walks of life.

McDonalds 00 Financial Report states that approximately 80% of McDonald’s restaurants and about 75% of the total revenues of McDonald’s restaurants are in nine markets Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan (a 50%-owned affiliate accounted for under the equity method), the United Kingdom and the United States. The Company also operates other restaurant concepts under its Partner Brands Boston Market, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Donatos Pizzeria. In addition, the Company has a minority ownership in Pret A Manger. In March 00, the Company sold its Aroma Caf business in the U.K.

Animal Testing Argumentative Essay

Animal Testing has led to dramatic improvements in the quality and quantity of life throughout the world. The veracity of this matter is crucial to every individual due to the fact that the experiment that is done on the animals can save lives for the reason that it can bring new medicine to aid people’s existence and reproduction. To all the scientists who are interested in animal issues and who think that it’s immoral and it should be banned, the next few paragraphs might make you think otherwise. Animal testing offers results that benefit the well being of humans. It can enhance understanding of the group under examination, and amplify the development of cosmetic surgery.

Animal Testing can introduce effects which are beneficial to the health of individuals and animals. Scientific research on animals is excellent since it can help in finding cures for many diseases. All scientists should realize that animal research is brilliant for the reason that we are able to survive through countless diseases, and not expire after every cold. If scientists did not use animals for evolutionary purposes, we wouldn’t be able to survive or reproduce. This is what has been keeping us alive until now. The world has accumulated many negative viruses and germs that by this point in history, the human race would have disappeared. Inuit’s used to pass away with just one illness. Nowadays we have medicine that can keep us alive and help our bodies fight just about anything. The credit should be given to the animal testing that researchers do. Laboratory exercises, as well as classroom demonstrations involving live animals can be valuable as instructional aids. Every student should understand that every lab and information given, are tools that can improve and continue all the research which can help humans survive. Some people may say that the notion of using animals for human purposes is wrong, immoral and we should try to use another method to be able to get cures to medication. Animals are the closest species or group on earth that resembles the human race. If we want to get cures we need to try out the medicine before giving it out, otherwise researchers can end up killing people instead of saving them. If we decide not to use medicine, everyone would get illnesses form each other and pass them on.

Animal testing can augment understanding concerning the group under examination. More knowledge and resolutions about any topic can be found when we test animals. Several individuals may articulate that it is very selfish to consider only human needs. They would add that animals have just as much rights as humans. Those people don’t understand that by testing animals it can be beneficial to the animals themselves. We can help animals survive as well. In addition, we are able to find out more about animals and get more knowledge about the growth of each species, and the possible effects that may arise in the future. Animal testing can be as simple as ringing a bell and feeding a dog, such as in Pavlov’s experiment, in order to understand how animals learn. Pavlov and his co-workers “had found that if a piece of food is placed in a dogs mouth, saliva is produced reflexively. If a dog merely sees a piece of food, salivation occurs automatically” (Salem, No date). Those tests help understand behaviour. We as students learn this in an introductory course in phsychology. Every type of testing including how to educate a dog is beneficial. If we didn`t have methods on how to test our animals we would not have pets in our homes, due to fear of getting diseases, and disobediance that we will not want to have. Buy testing an animal on what triggers them like ringing a bell in order for them to sit, gives us sufficient knowledge on how to raise our own kids. If we would test animals this way, many animals would be killed because no one would want to adopt them because of disobedience.

Scientists do not test animals for fun. They will declare it is morally acceptable for human beings to use other animals, but that it is morally wrong to cause them unnecessary or avoidable suffering. “Research is carried out as humanely and ethically as possible. This has rightly resulted in the gradual reduction and elimination of animal testing in many of the research areas mentioned” (European Coalition of Positive People (ECPP), 00). Unfortunately, the testing of an animal can lead to death. Once the animal dies many cosmetic ingredients can come from those animals; Eye liner, lip stick, hair products and much more. Many people will say that using animals for those reasons is morally wrong. However, we are talking about a dead animal that will be thrown away. Many women suffer from breast cancer and need to rebuild their breasts. The method of using animals to create a permanent liner, in order to redesign a nipple can be used. Also, now a day’s, women like to decorate their faces with permanent eye liner and permanent lip liner. All of this can bring money for advanced testing, for new cures.

Animal testing has helped the human race survive. We are able to help ourselves to be healthier physically and mentally. For those of you who still think that animal testing is immoral, ask yourselves one simple question. If you had cancer (G-d forbid), would you want to be able to find a cure for it? Countless diseases have been fought with this method, behavior of many species too. And cosmetic surgery has helped many needy patients to completely overcome their sickness. Animal testing is the smartest method of helping the world to be a better place!

Achieving a goal is a big success for me. As a student in a Business Communication Course, I am achieving several communication processes How to react?, How to communicate with people?, How to explain something, even simplest thing in a easiest way? How to receive and respond to negative messages? People react in different ways. For some people these questions are big task and for others it would be easy. No matter where you are and what you do it is all people.

For me this course was beneficial. Before, most of the time, I would have a hard time to explain and to respond to people’s statements and answers. I clearly see, this course gave me a base knowledge to achieve my future career.

I understood with the knowledge (education) the communication skill must follow. Let me give an example on what we did in class. Always talk optimistic about any issues and concerns. For example, if your boss asks you if you have finished the “Cash flow statement” and you have not finished them. Then never tell him that it has not finished. Tell him it would be on his desk by two o’clock or whenever you feel you can finish them.

Even your sister has to receive a positive message from you. If she asks you how much milk left in the refrigerator, it is more convenient to say “It is half full” instead of “half empty”. These are just some of the examples in a world of business communication.

The other most important thing was to give a presentation. Seeing other students I learned a lot of factors such as how to organize your outline, how to behave etc.

My future career goal is to work in any financial institution such as banks, broker, real estate etc. Therefore, I want to take more finance classes than anything else.

 Aspects of my work that could be changed and the resultant positive impact on cash flow

Arising from the above The aspects for discussion have broadly been identified as follows

livepaperhelp.com

• Staff Costs to do the Project Development Role

• Quasi- zero based budgeting Moratorium

• Consultancy Costs

• Overheads

• Numerous and complex processes and requirements with regards the various funding streams

Staff Costs

As discussed earlier my role is agency based on a daily rate of £5.00 on costs incl.

This is the only agency role within the team and though it is NRF (Neighbourhood Renewal Fund) funded it is the only role that is not a permanent one or on a Hackney fixed term contract pay roll. On a personal basis this means more money in my pocket but from a business point this is not a prudent way to spend funds which have been allocated solely for crime and disorder reduction and ultimately social regeneration. The role is much needed within the Service Area and of course CST but at a cheaper cost. It is strongly suggested that the agency be dispensed with and the role made into a fixed term contract one like all the other specialist roles within the team. It is appreciated that project management is a new area of expertise within the Community Partnership division of which SCS and CST fall within, however since it is very pivotal to the delivery of strategically aligned projects a more cost effective arrangement needs to be made.

Most funds are allocated to projects with a typical two or three year duration. It follows therefore that there is a requirement for projects to be developed, evaluated and monitored if not anything, for the lifetime of the fund. The NRF Programme which funds the Project Development role and all the other specialist CST roles is a 5 year programme so there is in fact enough lee way to fund this role on a fixed term basis.

Overheads

The overheads aspect of the costs of working can only be changed on a CST level in terms of ensuring that good practices take place, e.g.

• Making any personal phone calls as brief as possible (already practiced)

• Avoiding long business phone calls to mobiles whenever possible by arranging to call back on a land line whenever possible.

• Keeping lights switched off during the day unless absolutely necessary for use

• Switching off lights and equipment at the end of the day (already practiced)

• Security locking the main CST office door and windows at the close of business to guard against burglary especially computer equipment theft which is very rife within the borough. This will have a positive impact to ensure cash flow is limited to one-off capital costs for equipment to be replaced or upgraded as a result of depreciation or technology improvements and not duplicated costs as a result of theft.

• Introduction of the sending out of quarterly notices by the Project Development Manager if project budgets are likely to be exceeded for that quarter so that project leads are aware of the overall financial standing of the team and begin to embark on cost reduction strategies. A similar exercise should be done in respect to under spends to alert project leads early enough to enable “creative ideas” to be formulated on how to dispose of the projected surplus thereby avoiding under spend or at least reducing it to the barest minimum.

CST already saves on other overheads by hiring out our meeting rooms to other teams for a nominal fee which is kept as petty cash.

In terms of travel for conferences, workshops, seminars and training, the following good practices are already observed

• Using hotels offering competitive discounts to local authorities

• Advance booking for maximum discount on rail fares where possible.

• Monthly reports regarding project performance and spend against budget.

Consultancy Costs

Reference has already been made earlier on how the vast amounts spent on consultancy costs. Most of our consultants are on a retainer basis so whether they carry out jobs for our team or not we pay retainer fees. These fees are on top of the hourly rates we pay for specific jobs they carry out.

On the whole the tasks are around crime and disorder data analysis scanning trends and patterns to make recommendations, mapping and information sharing. Crime is very high in Hackney and so it would be worth while investing in a full time Partnership Information (Crime) Analyst post. These are specialist roles and it should not be too difficult to have a bid approved by one of the funding streams. Full time salaries for these roles are highly competitive but with the huge amounts we pay to our consultants we could reduce this by at least 50% and still be at the top end of the market in terms of HR job grading. This would have a positive or favourable impact on our cash flow and we would have a more dedicated customised service.

The “Clothed Maja” was painted by the Spanish painter Francisco Goya around 1805. The description in the room where this painting appeared stated that the woman that appears in this painting most likely the Duchess of Alba. Many believe that this work was commissioned for the Prime Minister of Spain at the time, Goday. Goya paints her in a way that expresses the beauty and sensuality of women. Goya painted a similar portrait, the “Naked Maja”, which is also likely to be the Duchess of Alba. This painting, however, seems to be a lot less sacred and enchanting as the that of the “Clothed Maja.” The Duchess of Alba is painting laying comfortably on a day bed, which is decorated in luxurious sheets and decorated pillows. The duchess is also shown wearing light, silky, elegant clothes. The way she lays on the bed makes demonstrates that there appears to be no tension throughout her entire body. The Duchess’s smile is relaxed and portrays her as having no preoccupations whatsoever. Her mischievous yet subtle smile attracts her viewers to contemplate her own thoughts. In contrast to the “Naked Maja” the “Clothed Maja” is dressed elegantly so that her wealth is emphasized. Goya portrays this woman as beautiful, strong, and independent. Through the use of light, Goya emphasizes the Duchess beautiful dainty face, and the movement, which appears in her clothes. The use of delicate pastel colors compliments the serene scene in which Goya is trying to create. The pink sash contrasts with the white silk paints, and doing so, emphasizes the purity in her white clothes and brings out the pure expression on her face. The light jacket she wears over her outfit is also seems to be very typical item of clothing in Spain. The pillows and the bed sheets are painted with delicate soft strokes and include great detail of patterns and textures. The colors in the “Clothed Maja” are warmer and heavy while the colors in the “Naked Maja” are more mellow and gray. In the “Clothed Maja”, Goya emphasizes the Duchess body and clothes, while in the “Naked Maja” Goya emphasizes the sheets, the day bed, and the background, by contrasting the pale dainty skin to the dark tones in the background. Many people believed that Goya and the Duchess of Alba might have had a secret love affair. This paining is quite simple and portrays the body and delicate emotions of a luxurious noble woman.

Socarras started by playing the Cotton Club and in black revues, recording the first flute solos jazz with Clarence Williams, Sidney Bechets and Louis Armstrongs producer. Once he had built up a reputation, he founded a big band that mixed classical music, Cuban rhythms and jazz. His music was a total novelty at the time, and one contemporary American critic wrote of the savage intensity of the bands rhythm section. Although Socarras was black, he overcame racial barriers in many clubs that had previously been closed to coloured bands, taking his tropical drums as far afield as Illinois and Nebraska.

The Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol also embarked on an American jazz career, joining the Duke Ellington orchestra in the late 10s. For Ellington he composed the first Latin jazz numbers, Caravan and Perdido. He also introduced his boss to the structure of Cuban music which, unlike jazz which allows its soloists complete freedom of invention, is based on a very precise superposition of rhythms, each of which has its own particular part to play in an acoustic tapestry that is constantly changing. The conga follows one predetermined line, the bongo another. Bass and plano both also make their own contribution to the polyphonic rhythms. Whatever notes they may be playing, Cuban musicians must respect a particular style of phrasing that neophytes (and even experienced jazzmen) often find hard to pick up.

Other American bandleaders, among them Chick Webb and Cab Calloway, fell for the charms of the bolero, guaracha and rumba-all three of them Cuban imports. In turn, jazz made its first tentative incursions into Cuba. Duke Ellington went to Havana in 1, and American-style big bands began to be formed there. But New York in the early 140s was the real home of the fusion of jazz and Cuban music that became known first as cubop (from Cuba and bebop) then as Latin jazz once other rhythms were added to it.

In the late 10s Mario Bauza, a one-time trumpeter with Cab Calloway who had grown tired of the watered-down Cuban music then to be heard from Xavier Cugats orchestra and other dance bands, decided to form an ensemble that would blend real Cuban rhythms with jazz. He named his new band the Afro-Cubans, brought his brother-in-law, the singer Machito his real name was Frank Grillo), over to join it, and won the backing of Calloways arranger. At first the music was rough-edged; the band brought together Cubans, Puerto Ricans and an American trumpet-player, all of whom would riff wildly together at the end of the choruses. The trumpet-player sometimes stumbled on the Cuban rhythms, and the Latin members at first had difficulties with the complex harmonies of jazz. But Bauza gradually succeeded in blending the two musical languages, and the ensemble soldered itself into a cohesive whole. The Afro-Cubans made their public debut at an East Harlem club in 140, and their daring new music soon won over the dancers. American drummers were particularly struck by the bongos, never having seen bare-handed drumming before.

Some Americans criticized the new music for evoking the caricature of a primitive Africa as fostered by Hollywood films. Gradually, though, jazzmen lent an ear. Attracted by the bands signature tune Tanga, Stan Kenton in 147 hired the percussionists to record his big hit 7-he Peanut Vendor. But his grandiloquent style of jazz did little justice to true Cuban music. On the other hand Charlie Parker, who cut some tracks with the Afro-Cubans in 150, at once caught the spirit of the music. His alto saxophone flies high on Mango Mangue, Okidoke, Cancion and jazz, weaving a web of melody over a background of torrid rhythm.

A stunning conga player from Havana

The other great catalyzer of Latin jazz was Dizzy Gillespie. From the moment of his arrival in New York he fell in love with Cuban music, whose verve reminded him of the black rhythms of his native South Carolina. He first played with Socarras, who taught him Cuban rhythms, then became friendly with Bauza, who brought him into the Calloway band. It was Bauza who, in 146, recommended to Gillespie the extraordinary percussionist Chano Pozo, recently arrived from Cuba. Vain and a brawler, Pozo had built up a solid reputation in Havana as a conga player and composer. He belonged to a secret mutual aid society, the nanigo, that had originated in Nigeria and whose membership was limited to men who had proved their courage and virility. He was therefore well-placed to understand AfroCuban -ritual chants and the more arcane features of the rumba.

Impressed by his drumming, singing and dancing, Gillespie hired Pozo to play in his big band. But the Cubans rhythms clashed with those of the bands existing drummer, Kenny Clarke, since the downbeat of traditional jazz differed from that of Cuban music. Gillespie set about explaining jazz phrasing to Pozo, and the results were the classics of Latin jazz Manteca and Tin Tin Deo.

Latin jazz was also gathering momentum in Cuba, where some excellent bands were formed. But the Havana clubs, catering for the foreign tourist trade, generally preferred to hire bland cosmopolitan showbands rather than feature the invigprating local music. Nonetheless, the instruments and harmonies of jazz fused with Cuban percussion and rhythms in the remarkable big bands led by Bebo Valdes and Benny More.

Back in New York, Chano Pozo was shot dead in a Harlem bar in December 148 at the age of thirty-three. But he had paved the way for a stream of other Latin percussionists to record with jazz musicians.

Cuban jazz moved out of the limelight in the late 150s. h was Dizzy Gillespie who reanimated the Latin sound in the ensuing decade by bringing in fresh, Brazilian blood. On a trip to Rio he heard the popular samba and bossa nova, and brought the new sounds back with him to New York. In fact bossa nova, which had been created by the guitarist Joao Gilberto and popularized by the composers Carlos Jobim and Vinicius dc Moraes and the guitarist Baden Powell, already reflected a jazz influence. Unlike samba, which was carnival music, bossa nova was calm and sophisticated, full of refined and unexpected harmonies. Its principal charm, though, lay in its distinctive driving rhythm, the batida, born of a slight asynchronization between the melody and its accompaniment that created a climate of ambiguity, as though the music were floating, suspended between beats.

Stan Getz made the new rhythm his own, and even while he was still coming to grips with its complexities made the album Bossa Nova that was to be one of his greatest successes. Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Byrd and the musicians of the Modern Jazz Quartet (which played with the Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida) also showed an interest in the subtle, swaying rhythms of bossa nova and in the sambas irrepressible energy.

In the early 150s, Latin jazz combos gradually supplanted the big bands, made obsolete by the rise of rock n roll. In 15 the English pianist George Shearing formed a group in California that included several Cuban percussionists, one of whom was Mongo Santamaria. Shearing brought discs by local pianists back from Havana-, he was particularly struck by their rhythmic understatement and their habit of playing melodic lines with both hands at once.

New York combos and Havana big bands

The other great combo of the 150s was formed by Santamaria himself in New York, for as well as being an outstanding percussionist in the AfroCuban tradition he was also a formidable talent scout. First he hired the still-unknown Brazilian pianist joao Donato, then Chick Corea, Hubert Laws and other future jazz stars. In the 160s Santamaria spent some time in Brazil, fascinated by Afro-American music as well as Latin rhythms (Watermelon Man was his first big hit). He managed to integrate these different influences in a cohesive style that reflected his own strong personality.

In the 170s, the young Colombian Justo Almario, a magisterially talented flautist, saxophonist, arranger and composer, collaborated with Santamaria, bringing fresh dynamism to the line-up. Witness the superb 7-be Promised Land, in which a richly harmonic passage for flute and saxophone follows a prelude reflecting the influence of john Coltrane; while Almarios improvisation with Al Williams on Song for You is one of the most exquisite and rigorously constructed flute solos to be heard in either the jazz or Latin traditions. On his Ubane album, Santamaria introduced the cumbia, a traditional Colombian rhythm played on the hand drum, while on Red Hot he featured a richly melodic little samba of Almarios.

Politics cut Cuba off from America after 160, but young Cuban musicians nonetheless continued eagerly to soak up the jazz influence. It came as a surprise to Dizzy Gillespie, when he visited Havana in 177, to find just how high a standard the local musicians had maintained. His present big band includes three Cubans the trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, whom he met in Havana; the drummer Ignacio Berroa; and the saxophonist Paquito DRivera. Gillesple, a long-time connoisseur of tropical rhythms, also hired, alongside his American sidemen, a Puerto Rican percussionist, a Panamanian pianist, a Dominican saxophonist, three Brazilians and a trombone player of Mexican descent.

Two years after Gillespies Cuban trip, the Havana-based band Irakere, mixing African drums, electric guitars and synthesizers, swept into the United States like a musical whirlwind, carrying off a Grammy award-the nations highest music-industry honour.

The present generation of Cuban musicians remains open to outside ideas, but combines the search for a determinedly new sound with the desire to remain within the islands musical heritage. Among the best of them is the young pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, a scion of one of the islands most distinguished musical dynasties whose group has performed successfully at several international festivals.

Brazil, like Cuba traditionally a musical melting pot, also has an active Latin-jazz scene. To create original sounds, the Zimbo Trio, guitarists Egberto Sigmondi and Toninho Horta, the saxophonist Paolo Moura, the pianist Wagner Tiso and the multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal all draw on a variety of sources samba, bossa nova, the folk traditions of the Northeast coast, and the music of the African-inspired cults, batucada, candomble and afoxe

Hailing from Belo Horizonte, Milton Nascimento draws inspiration from his native Minas Gerais for his moving and dream-like music, full of unfamiliar harmonies, whose rhythms are unlike those of the samba and the bossa nova. The poignant beauty of his compositions has attracted the attention of such American jazz musicians as Stanley Turrentine, Sarah Vaughan and Herbie Hancock, all of whom have provided loving cover versions.

On the whole, however, the Brazilian music industry has not proved very welcoming to Latin jazz, so many of the best practitioners such as Airto Moreira, Tania Maria, Eliane Elias and Dom Salvador have found larger audiences for their music abroad, particularly in the United States. In American clubs and recording studios, the jazz and Latin traditions continue to enrich each other as happily as in the past, and Brazilian music still offers jazz its subtle harmonic palette.

In New York, a magnet for people of many cultures, Latin jazz is currently engaged in a process of intense cross-fertilization. Besides the Brazilians, there are Argentine musicians drawing on the lyrical inspiration of the tango, Colombians with the warm rhythms of the cumbia, Dominicans with the turbulent merengue, as well as musicians brought up to the rhythms of the languid jamaican calypso, the cadenced tamborcito of Panama and the fiery bomba and plena of Puerto Rico. New York Puerto Ricans like Tito Puente, growing up at the meeting place of all these divergent styles, integrate many different influences in their music, including jazz, soul, salsa and Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican folklore. The Cubans who arrived after 180, among them Paquito DRivera and Ignacio Berroa as well as the master-drummers Daniel Ponce and Puntilla, also spice their music with the rhythm of the songo, invented in Havana in the 170s, as well as with elements of the black traditional music of their homeland.

Today Latin jazz is enjoyed around the world by a growing number of enthusiasts. Bands from Africa, Japan and Europe happily try their hand at it, showing that while it is sometimes difficult for the different nations to reach political accord, musical unity is already a reality.
