History Between The Wars

Research Essay

Hoover and Roosevelt had very different ideas on how the Depression should be handled. This was almost entirely a result of two basic differences in their schemas; Hoover was a Republican, and had basically worked his way through life and saw himself as a self-made man, while Roosevelt was a Democrat, and had been born in to a rich family and a silver spoon in his mouth. As we can easily see, in many ways these two are complete opposites which created extremely different impacts and responses by each individual towards the depression. It seems that Roosevelts and Hoovers policies were diverse in several ways.

Having taken at least partial credit for the economic boom of the Twenties when he campaigned for the presidency in 18, Hoover had trouble personally accepting the end of the boom or understanding just how bad the crash and Depression would be. Hoover initially felt that the Depression was a temporary dip in the economic cycle caused more by psychological fears than economic realities. Therefore, President Hoover responded to the crash of the stock market and the beginning of the Depression by telling everyone that as long as Americans didnt let panic cause them to take demanding and uncalled-for action, the country would witness a brief and limited recession and then resume its economic boom. Confidence was the key. He then waged a campaign to convince businessmen to keep wages up so that consumption levels would not decline. Businessmen maintained wage levels temporarily, but cut back on the number of their employees because of dropping consumption levels. Hoover also failed in his confidence campaign to convince consumers to keep purchasing. Seeing other workers laid off and fearing for their own future, laborers cut back on purchases; guaranteeing further layoffs.

Hoover’s long term key to economic recovery was that government intervention should be kept to an absolute minimum and to restore the confidence of the business community in the economy of the United States. Only if businessmen reinvested their capital in the economy would the country be able to recover. Hoover fought desperately to maintain a balanced federal budget. This was extremely difficult given the demands placed on the government to launch various relief programs and a shrinking revenue base because of the huge deflation rate. Hoover states The course of unbalanced budgets is the road to ruin. Therefore, he pursued for over three years a conservative business-oriented approach to Americas’ recovery.

In the name of restoring business confidence, President Hoover also rejected demands by Americans that the currency system be inflated. Many Americans reasoned that since the economic disaster, the country suffered from immense deflation as hundreds of millions of dollars were withdrawn from circulation. Then the appropriate prescription was inflation. They urged the government to abandon the gold standard and flood the economy with printed currency. Hoover rejected such demands arguing that a stable or hard currency system had always been a requirement for business investment. If the currency system was inflated by the government, businessmen would refuse to reinvest their funds in the economy. This would simply delay the day when economic recovery could begin therefore convincing Hoover to refuse the demands for inflation.

By 1 unemployment had reached 4.% nationwide. This was such an enormous problem that only the federal government, with its borrowing power and its ability to print currency, could cope with it. Nonetheless, Hoover refused to budge. President Hoover did increase federal spending on public works as a way of trying to lessen unemployment. $700 million on such projects in 11 was extraordinarily high. However, he grew more hostile with the passage of time believing a huge work relief program might be as demoralizing as a dole. When Congress passed the Emergency Relief and Construction Act in 1, Hoovers administrators did everything in their power to limit its impact through the implemented process.

Hoover finally gave in to his stubborn attitude and called for and obtained the Reconstruction Finance Corporation which was a government lending agency that made long-term low interest loans to banks and big businesses in hopes of prompting economic recovery. While the RFC loans did prevent the peak of the banking crisis until 1, they failed to promote economic recovery. Expansion would obviously be the last thing on the minds of most businessmen in 1. Causing businesses not to get loans to expand, workers werent rehired, and there was no increase in consumption by rehired laborers. While the RFC was a good start, it was according to Hoovers attitude and his conservative business-oriented philosophy and approach. The loans benefited the banks and big businesses and the unemployed, homeless, and needy were left to go hungry and feel like failures. President Roosevelt was then elected in 1 and quickly created a program to create jobs and recover America.

Roosevelts general policy was to make work for anyone and everyone who was redundant; it didnt matter if the work was pointless, and didnt really need to be done. He managed to create the “New Deal” in the hundred days with help of his ‘brain trust’. In order to buy time to solve the banking crisis caused by bank runs since 1, FDR declared a Bank Holiday temporarily shutting down every bank in the country by executive order. Congress then instantly passed the Emergency Banking Act of 1, lending government money to unstable banks and thereby restoring confidence. Shortly thereafter FDR and Congress created a more permanent solution - the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. FDIC was and still is a government-sponsored insurance program guaranteeing the security of deposits in member banks. If the bank fails, the FDIC compensates depositors, bringing back faith to America.

Many of FDR’s famous alphabet agencies were quickly established to control the economic depression by pumping national funds into the economy. This made a great impact on the economy and things began looking up for America. The Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) provided funds outright to the needy, whereas the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Public Works Administration (PWA), and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) put millions of unemployed to work on public projects. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) protected depositors in the event of bank failures; the National Recovery Administration (NRA) regulated prices and wages and promoted fair business competition; and the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) tried to help farmers by reducing excess production and increasing farm prices this alphabet policy created relief for many and America looked as though it was on the road to recovery.

By the end of Roosevelt’s second term, for the first time, the federal government assumed responsibility for the welfare of American citizens. For individuals, there was relief for the jobless and the needy, insurance programs for the aged and the unemployed, and subsidies for farmers. The PWA (public works administration) spent $6 billion enabling building contractors to employ 650,000 workers who might otherwise have been jobless. The PWA built everything from schools and libraries to roads and highways. The agency also financed the construction of cruisers, aircraft carriers, and destroyers for the navy. On a broader level, FDRs domestic policies allowed for the manipulation of credit and interest rates to promote economic expansion, and a vast range of economic planning policies aimed at priming the pump with tax adjustments, government spending, and active intervention in the private sector. However, despite these efforts of the New Deal relief and recovery programs, the economy recovered only slightly between 1 and 15. While laissez-faire capitalism died, democracy and capitalism survived the tremendous ordeal of the Great Depression. If the New Deal failed to end the Great Depression, its successes still transformed America permanently.

Hoover and Roosevelt had a variety of different ideas from a political view, Hoover once said; No president must ever admit he has been wrong. Hoover acted boldly during his presidency, it became more and more apparent that the Depression was worsening and his program of confidence, voluntarism, and business support wasnt working, He refused to recognize that his philosophy and programs werent working. Rather than try something different, he clung rigidly to his program, became more defensive and convinced himself and Americans that things were getting better, but instead lost the support of the nation. Roosevelt on the other hand .

There are so many different ethnic backgrounds in the United States today, but they didn’t all originate here. People of all nationalities started immigrating here in the 17th Century. Just in the short time from 100 155, over fifteen million people immigrated to America. These fifteen million people consisted of Italians, Irish, Polish, Germans and many more. They had to form huge communities due to the influx of people, but after migration was cut off in the 10’s the communities quickly languished. Children of the immigrants look back and consider these communities the institution of their learning (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

One of the largest groups of immigrants were the Italians. The Italians are from southern Europe. They mostly have darker skin and have dark hair. However, some Italians from different parts of Italy have blonde hair and fair skin. The majority of Italians are loving people. Altogether, over five million Italians migrated to the United States. Most of the Italian immigrants came from the provinces of Calabria, Campania, Apulia, and the island of Sicily. Even though the Italians lived in these provinces, they were also grouped into little villages. When in Italy they were only loyal to the people in their village. When they came to America they were forced to live in cities where it was too hard to keep local ties between them. These moves to the city made them realize for the first time that they all shared the common Italian heritage (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

The Italians, like many other immigrants, left their native countries for many different reasons. The immigrants that departed from the Northern part of Italy left in hope of finding religious freedom. A lot of men left to avoid military time or even in some cases, jail time. Some immigrants also had high hopes; they were in search of political asylum and greater economic opportunities. In the beginning, most of them didn’t make huge moves, very rarely would they cross the ocean. Most of them ventured to central and western Europe, to such places as, Ireland, England, and Belgium (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

The living conditions in Southern Italy were so much worse than in the North, but it still took the Southerners much more time to leave. There were many reasons for the delay in their move, one reason being that they were much poorer than the Northerners. They were also much less sophisticated and way too conservative. Once a lot of the Northerners left and the population dropped drastically, the Southerners were left with little choice but to go. When they first started moving they went to North and South America. As the American industry expanded they all flocked to the United States. There were so many Southerners immigrating at one time that they greatly outnumbered the Northerners on the transatlantic ships. Unlike in the early years though, the destination of both the Northerners and the Southerners were the same. By the time World War I came along, Italy was losing people due to immigration at a rate of half a million people a year (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

Once the United States became the main destination of most immigrants, they started to settle in the central and eastern part of the nation. Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Georgia were where some of the settlements were. The population in the western states started to grow also and in 184 when gold was discovered in California, the population soared. Even after the novelty of the gold rush ended, many of them stayed in the west as merchants, shopkeepers, gardeners, winemakers, and much more. Some of them even became prominent local citizens (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

By the late 1860’s, a few Italians lived in almost every state. California still had the largest number of them with New York City having the second most. Some of the Italians in New York City adapted quickly and were very successful businessmen. Still most of the others remained poor. Most of them that got off the ships were living in slums, because they had spent all their money on their passage over (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

The later immigrants didn’t care where they lived, because they were mostly men between ages sixteen and forty- five, who just wanted to make money at available jobs and return home. This idea caught on so quickly that by 107 a total of 85,71 had immigrated to America for work but almost half of them returned to their homeland.

The immigrants that came later in the 1th and 0th centuries assimilated very quickly. Most of them settled in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania near the business districts. A lot of them landed regular jobs after awhile and were able to move out of the slums to make room for newcomers. Even though the immigrants in New York were some of the most successful; New York also had the largest, most congested immigrant neighborhoods. One of the reasons for this was because newcomers from the same village tried to settle on the same street or even the same building sometimes. Most of them would try to get work at the same factory, but that seldom worked out (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

There were so many Italians that inhabited the area at first that even when the population started to dwindle, the area was still thought of as Italian. This was because even though the Italian population went down their churches, restaurants, and businesses were still thriving. These businesses attracted non- Italians very often because of the “authentic” products that they offered. The restaurants stayed in business due to the ethnic foods they served (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

While the immigrants in New York were adapting, so were the ones in San Francisco and New Orleans. A good majority of the immigrants in these two cities were very wealthy. In San Francisco, the business district was settled first. Then the waterfront, also known as, the commercial district, was quickly discovered and inhabited. Now that most of the Italian population lived in the United States, they started to prosper by taking on American ways of living (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

A majority of the Italians settled on farms due to much encouragement from observers. The observers figured that they would Americanize quicker in the countryside compared to in the cities. In addition to the farms, seasonal agriculture work was very popular. They liked this because it required little skill and employed whole families to work together. The largest of these seasonal settlements were in the west, where a lot of farmers that began as tenants eventually bought the land that they cultivated. Most of them didn’t want to turn to farming though, they said they didn’t come all the way to America to go back to the farm. Instead, they longed to be saloonkeepers, ice cream vendors, clerks, barbers, and restaurant owners. Some of the Southerners that arrived late also did well in the construction industry. By the turn of the century, the Italians were well adapted and had overcome all their hardships. Many of them were very successful, such as, Amadio Obici. He is also known as “peanut king”. He is the man that we can all thank today for the Planters Peanut Company. The Italians were becoming smarter and smarter and as soon as they successfully mastered the business side of society, they were ready to move onto politics (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

At first, the Italians that were registered voters usually just voted the way the press and the community told them to. Due to this, the Italians could usually only conquer local offices and nothing of higher status. James March, who arrived in America at age thirteen, eventually became a Republican Party leader in the Italian colony. Through politics and elections, Italians began to realize that unlike in Italy when provinces didn’t cooperate, here in America they had to join together to solve their problems. One problem that they faced and overcame quickly was the transition from the Old World to the New World ways. They accepted many things that were unfamiliar to them in Italy (Harvard Encyclopedia 180).

These things that were unfamiliar to them consisted of the press, multi-benefit societies and they also had problems with the churches. The Italian press offered newcomers morals and advice. The first Italian- language newspaper in the United States was L’ Eco d’ Italia. Almost every single Italian supported the Multi- benefit societies also. These were formed to help the immigrants in times of need. They made monthly donations and then the society helped them when they needed medical care and they also helped with burial expenses in times of death. These societies are much like our medical insurance today.

Psychology as defined in Segal and Kegan’s book on psychology is the “systematic study of behavior and mental process - including thought and emotion and the factors that influence them”. The behavior aspect of the definition deals with the physical actions that us humans undergo, commencing from the second we wake up from sleep every morning. On the other hand, the mental and emotional processes deal with our thoughts and feelings; the way we feel, think of ideas, and interpret them. Also including emotions that we venture through- ranging from anger, happiness, hatred, sadness etc. Psychology is a systematic study because the theories that are reached are not based on myths and cultural beliefs; but based on substantial methods of experimentation; that is scientific proof (Segal and Kagan 4). Within the realm of psychology there are complex issues that are heavily debated by all branches of psychology the Behaviorists, Gestalt Psychologists, Cognitive psychologists, Humanists and the Psychoanalysts. All these psychologists attempt to understand the behavior and mental processes that make us humans. There is a need to understand what shapes our behavior this is where the Nature Nurture debate comes in. Psychologists need to understand the issue of the Nature- Nurture debate before they continue on to explore, understand, and interpret human behavior. They need this understanding because the very basic of human behavior may be grouped into two human behavior based on innate tendencies and behavior that is shaped by our environment. Thus, this is when the debate becomes relevant. As this essay carries on, the nature-nurture debate shall be explained in detail and related to the field of psychology.

The Nature Nurture debate is one of the most continuous, complex issues that have evolved from the field of psychology. This complex issue explores the relationship between Nature and Nurture. Nature deals with the principles of genetics. It starts off with every plant and animal cell possessing a nucleus. The nucleus contains strands called chromosomes and within these is DNA, which provides the chemical basis of heredity. Along the chromosomes are genes, which are DNA that have some control on development. These genes can be said to be the basis for the innate behaviors (California Wadsworth 57).

On the other hand, Nurture deals with how the environment shapes human behavior. The British Philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke take an empirical that is, experimental approach that focuses on experiences as the basis for behavior. Just as the behaviorist, B.F Skinner explored the idea that if a behavior is positively reinforced it reoccurs, but if it was punished- that is negatively reinforced, than behavior wont reoccur (Tooby and Cosmides ).

The Nature Nurture debate is also known to be the genetic/environmental debate controversy. The debate can be shown using examples. The first example is in the case where a baby human and a baby monkey are put in the perfect environment. Even though they grow up together, there will be still some differences between them. These differences could only be of a genetic nature, which shows the Nature aspect of the debate. The second example is with identical twins. If one of the twins is excluded from the environment for a couple of years, the differences in behavior between the twins in seclusion with the twin that was exposed to the environment will be great. Simply because the secluded twin was not influenced by the same environment as the exposed twin. This example shows the nature side of the debate (Fujita 1). Yet, “the way we develop is a combined product of our genes and our environment. If two people develop differently, that difference could be a result of a difference in their genes or in their environment” (California Wadsworth 1).

The Nature-Nurture debate is an issue that is extremely relevant to psychologists. The complete understanding of this debate would ensure that psychologists fully understand the ways of human behavior. The relevance of the debate to psychology could be explained with some issues that stem from the nature-nurture debate. Homosexual behavior has been associated with brains structures, hormones, and genes. In 11, a neurobiologist S. Le Vay found that within the brain structures of about nineteen known homosexual men that died of AIDS, the hypothalamus had decreased in size. Thus it led the neurobiologist to believe that homosexuality might be innate, that is present in human genes. Furthermore, a research team of L.S Allen and R.A Gorski reported that the cluster of nerve fibers between the hemispheres of the brain, the anterior commissure, was larger in the brain of about thirty-four homosexuals. This would lead to the behaviors of stuttering, being dyslexic, and being left-handed.

The above studies are related to psychology in the sense that physiologists for example would explore the aspect of the hypothalamus and the nerve fibers and use that to further interpret human behavior. This would be in accordance to the nature side of the debate.

According to the article by Thomas E. Schmidt, homosexual behavior can stem from the early stages of development. Usually, at an early stage, children move closer towards the same-sex parent for comfort. The psychoanalysts know this as the Oedipus complex. Normally, as the child grows, the desire for the same-sex parent gets extinguished. However, in the case of those who eventually display homosexual behavior tend to act upon that same-sex desire. The branch of psychology that would deal with this aspect of the debate would be the psychoanalysts, so that they can further their observations of the behavior of children towards their parents. This theory would represent the nurture side of the debate.

Another example is that of the Monozygotic Twins- these are twins that are identical. A study was performed that observed monozygotic twins that grew up apart from each other. Oddly, enough the twins still shared certain behaviors such as

· Wearing seven rings on their fingers

· Being habitual gigglers

· Being afraid of closed places, compulsive counters, and walk into the ocean backward

· Amuse themselves by sneezing loudly in elevators for amusement

(California Wadsworth 60)

This study shows how some behaviors are innate, a part of one’s nature. Psychologists would use this study to further interpret human behavior and determine the root of it all. The complex issue of the Nature- Nurture debate is still ongoing. Psychologists are performing studies to provide them with answers to the everlasting question- what determines human behavior, nature or nurture? So far studies have shown that behavior is not caused by only one factor, rather nature and nurture are intertwined to produce human behavior. Some behaviors of humans are due to genetics, while other behaviors are the result of one’s immediate environment. This debate is extremely important to the realm of psychology because the primary goal of psychologists is to be able to understand and predict human behavior. This goal needs the understanding of how nature and nurture are essentials in predicting human behavior.

The Death Penalty is one of the most effective ways to keep dangerous criminals from committing crimes. Every time the death penalty is applied to a person, the risk of more people murdered is reduced. Some people talk about the death penalty as something barbaric, and inhumane thing that can never be accepted in a civilized society, punishment is somewhat the opposite of barbaric since it reveals justice and rectitude. It is not a barbaric act to remove a violent murderer who has injured and killed fellow humans; it is not barbaric to make society a somewhat safer, calm and just place. However, it is important to emphasize that capital punishment should be applied to those criminals who commit major crimes such as sexual abuse, murders, terrorism, treason, or those who belong to the mafia of drugs, the cruel and unjustified killing of animals, among others. These crimes do not have any justification because they are attempting against the life of other human beings. Therefore, the individuals who commit such crimes should receive the maximum punishment. Justice has to rule society; otherwise, society would be full of murderers who will keep committing crimes without the fear of receiving punishment. The death penalty does not have all the support from several citizens in this country as well as others. Nevertheless, there are several facts to support this measurement.

The death penalty is an effective form of punishment. Abolitionists often quarrel that, with the death penalty, there is an unavoidable fact that someone innocent will be executed, but they do not realize that the courts give them the opportunity to prove their innocence by granting them appeals and a fair trial. It is valid to assume that throughout the years many innocent people have been executed. However, many of these people were not proven or found to be innocent. Other people against capital punishment argue that this measure does not deter, as a result, it is useless. It is valid to argue this comment, but it is obvious that the death penalty deters some people from committing murder and cruel crimes and, thereby, society is less brutalized. No one should have any doubt of this. Those sentenced to death have to suffer an unbearable existence until their death, no one can live or sleep thinking that the day of their death is getting closer every second. It has been proven that there will always be people who are more afraid of death than lifetime in prison, and consequently this will keep some from committing heinous crimes. The death penalty is more than justified since it would come to save some innocent lives, and their lives should be more important for us to save than the life of a killer. People against the death penalty can often say, “the death penalty does not help,” but they do not realize that it helps by giving a just punishment and to maintain the respect and the dignity of the human life. In addition, it is clearly understood that murderers and violent criminals who are executed are unable to commit new crimes. Every time a serial killer is stopped by the use of the death penalty, before the violence has spread, humanism and humanity wins a great victory and starts creating a brick for a nicer and safer society.

Punishment is needed to protect society by eliminating crime through example. Criminals have to fear justice; this way the number of crimes will decrease. The justice has to demonstrate that if anyone robs a person of his or her life, everyone should feel safe knowing that this murderer will also lose his life. Nowadays, the death penalty counts with the support of President Bush who states “I support the death penalty because I believe, if administered swiftly and justly, Capital Punishment is a deterrent against future violence and will save other innocent lives.” If a criminal kills a person, he is taking away the most valuable thing the victim has life. Therefore, the criminal has to pay the price with his own life. When the justice executes a dangerous criminal, it is like a doctor performing surgery. Sometimes a surgeon has to amputate a part of the body in order to save the rest of the body. The law is also forced to perform such unnatural operations (the death penalty). However, it is an operation that, despite all, brings justice, human value, compassion and defense of life itself, to the body of society. Enemies of the death penalty use as an argument “the right to life.” Using this argument is contradictory since they are trying to give the criminal the right that the victim did not have. The courts should not accept this statement. If this happens, the “right to life” principle will be transformed to an inhumane principle, to a defender of the criminal, and then this principle would become somewhat enemy of humanity. When a court sentences a criminal to death, it is demonstrating an act of civilization because it is announcing that committing violent crimes is morally wrong and causes dread among those who are planning to commit more evil acts. In retrospect, justice has to put the example and guide the society to think twice before committing a crime.

It is better to prevent more acts that are violent before they take place. It is proven that the death penalty costs more money to this country than a life prison sentence, but it is better to pay that price than to permit the loses of more innocent lives. Assassinations, sexual abuse, and terrorism are crimes that must be punished with all the rigidity of the law. No one has the right to physically or psychologically assault a human being because everyone has the right to be respected. Moreover, since the death penalty is a measure to make people respect each other, it has to receive complete support of society.

The specific social problem that I would like to address is the environment, and how overpopulation has caused it to be abused beyond its limits. “The root cause of environmental degradation is worldwide population growth. In most developing countries, the rate of population growth is far exceeding the expansion of the food supply, and overcrowding is overwhelming the already inadequate sanitation and waste disposal systems. In the developed countries, a more moderate rate of population increase coupled with a disproportionate use of natural resources is causing severe pollution problems.” (Paul R. Ehrlich, page 4).

I believe that the above quote sums up the problem in a very clear manner. There are many environmental problems facing us today, but if we look closely at them, the one thing that we can rely on, that we can fall back on, is the fact that without overpopulation, many, if not all of these problems, would be non-existent.

The scope of overpopulation is worldwide. You will have a very difficult time finding anywhere in the world where evidence of overpopulation is not evident. Starvation, lower standard’s of living, and not a similar increase in resources available. When evaluating the scope of overpopulation we have to remember that overpopulation does not normally mean too many people for the area of a country, but too many people in relation to the necessities and amenities of life. “Overpopulation occurs when numbers threaten values.” (Ehrlich, pg. 6) If something is not done about this, we will see more and more of what already happens in many underdeveloped countries - famine, disease, and pestilence. Not to mention the total consumption of resources that, under ideal circumstances, would last forever.

To live off the interest, your million dollars would always be there in the bank. But let’s say you spend more than just the interest say 100,000 a year. Now the million will only last you so long. More than 10 years because interest on the remaining money will build back up, but not enough to replenish completely. Now let’s say that this million dollars is actually the rain forests of Brazil. You can apply the exact same principal. How does this relate do you ask? China, for example, imports over 80% of it’s lumber, and increases in population in China therefore contribute the destruction of South American rainforests. (Miller, p. 147)

Some of the factors that have created this problem deal mostly with rd World countries and their views on having larger families. These underdeveloped countries want to have larger families for a number of reasons (Curran & Renzetti p. 44)

1. Children’s wages contribute to the family’s economic well being.

. There is a high infant and child mortality.

. Boys are more valued than girls are; therefore parents need to make sure at least one son survives.

4. Parents expect to rely on their children to support them in old age.

5. In some developing countries, high fertility is encouraged.

6. There is little information about or access to birth control.

Other factors which influence the overpopulation problem are advances in technology, which have led to decreased infant mortality rates, decreased death rates from diseases and injuries, and longer life spans. For example, the average life expectancy of a person in China (which has the #1 life expectancy worldwide) is 7 years old! Back in the Middle Ages, the average life expectancy was about 40 years old!

A solution to this problem is not an easy one. The world’s population will continue to grow as long as the birth rate exceeds the death rate; it is as simple as that. When it stops growing or starts to shrink, it will mean that either the birth rate has gone down or the death rate has gone up or a combination of the two. Then, there are only two kinds of solutions to the population problems. One is a “birth rate solution”, in which we find ways to lower the birth rate. The other is a “death rate solution”, in which ways to raise the death rate war, famine, pestilence find us.

The second point is definitely not a solution that we want to examine. Would we intentionally start a war, or a plague to cure overpopulation? No. So when we think about lowering the birth rate, we have to think about strategies to do this. In China, the institution of the one-child family principal, which became national policy in 180, helped their growth rate plummet to 1.1%. However, such a policy, even with such added incentives such as tax breaks, bonuses, and increased food allowances, will not work in most other countries.

It will require educational programs, such as family planning, birth reduction, birth control, and family values, to stop the abundance of adolescent unplanned pregnancies and children being born.

Many resist this solution, although it is much more prevalent in underdeveloped countries. As I have outlined in the factors of the problem, and the reasons that some countries (rd World countries specifically) have more children, it will be difficult to change the whole way of life of these people, and how they view their family size. It is something that will be a slow and difficult education process.

It also used to be (although this isn’t so common anymore), that even here in the United States, many farms would want to have larger families to have children to help run the farm, and eventually take over, when the parents got older. I have personally done some genealogical research and have found that most farm families throughout the 1800 and 100’s would have 10 or 15 children because the farm was large enough to support them, and they could help run the farm. I guess that I point this out to say that it is not just the third World countries that have larger families, and that we have “evolved” from such a mind set. Now hopefully with education and assistance, more developed countries can make the point clear to other countries that they can also overcome these large family crutches outlined above and help the world end this overpopulation crisis.

I feel that the chances of this solution being fixed are slim. Maybe in some places, they will be highly successful, and they have definitely worked in China, but for the most part, for many underdeveloped countries, it is, and will continue to be a problem. The education and change in “large family” views is something that will be a difficult and an ongoing process. It is definitely something that I want to be involved in, and learn more about, and who knows, maybe in my lifetime, I will see a zero population growth, and a better economic status for all people in all countries.

Oedipus a Tragic Hero

According to Aristotle’s in the Poetics, certain characteristics must be met in order for the audience to be able to identify a tragic hero. First of all, a tragic hero must cause his own destruction; his punishment must be bigger than his crime. Secondly, a tragic hero must be a nobleman and have greatness or power. Finally the audience must feel sympathy and fear for the hero. I think based on these characteristics; Oedipus could definitely be considered a tragic hero. An Oracle told Oedipus that he would kill his father and marry he is mother. Oedipus trying to run from his own destiny decides to move to Thebes. On his way to Thebes, Oedipus kills a man, not knowing that this man he had just murdered was his biological father. In Thebes everybody is excited because Oedipus had just killed the Sphinx and as a token of their appreciation they make Oedipus the king and he gets to marry Jocasta, his biological mother. Oedipus doesn’t realize that murdering this man and marrying Jocasta he has just fulfilled the prediction of the Oracle.

First of all, we can see Oedipus cause his own destruction when he starts looking for the person that killed Laius and went he starts digging into his own past. There was a plague in Thebes and Oedipus sends Creon to consult the oracle so they can finally end this plague. The oracle tells him that the plague comes because of an unpunished murder. Oedipus seeks for Teiresias help to find Lauis murderer. Oedipus doesn’t know that Teiresias knows who his parents really are and that the murdered that his looking for is himself. Oedipus starts questioning Teiresias, when Teiresias tells him that he is the killer Oedipus refuses to believe him. A messenger comes to inform Oedipus that his father Polybus had died and that they wanted Oedipus to become the king of Corinth. Oedipus is relieved to hear that Polybus had died because now there’s no way that prophecy can be realized. The messenger tells Oedipus that Polybus and Merope where not his real parents and he proceeds to tell him what happened when Oedipus was a baby. Oedipus sends for the shepherd after he founds out that the shepherd was the one that gave Oedipus to Polybus and Merope. When Oedipus talks to the shepherd, he realized that he couldn’t escape from his own destiny.

Secondly, there are a couple of instances that show us that Oedipus was a nobleman and a man of great power. Oedipus is the son of Laius and Jcasta, the King and Queen of Thebes, his parents where loyalty. He also believed he was the son of Polybus and Merope, the King and Queen of Corinth. Finally the people of Thebes respect Oedipus when he solves the riddle of the Sphinx and finally gets rid of this monster that was terrorizing the people of Thebes. We can see that in different senses he was a noble man and the people admired him.

One of the last characteristics a tragic hero must have is that the audience must feel sympathy and fear for the hero. We can see this happen when Oedipus finally realizes that he had killed his father and that the women he has married was really his mother. We can also see this when Oedipus runs to get Jocasta and he realizes that she has killed herself. It is also very sad and tragic when Oedipus takes his eyes out. The fact that he chooses to take his eyes out instead of just killing himself, I think is what provokes that feeling of sympathy and fear from the audience.

In conclusion when I think about that tragic heroes, Oedipus always come to mind first. I love this story because it shows how you can’t escape your own destiny. I also believed that according to Aristotle’s characteristics of what makes a tragic hero, Oedipus has all of these characteristics. It is horrible the fate that awaits Oedipus and the truth is it wasn’t his fault that he was born in that situation. The only thing that he wanted to do was find out the truth of his past and of Lauis killer. Little did he know he was setting himself and his family for a horrifying ending. Oedipus left Thebes with his daughters and he lived blind for a few years before he finally died.

When asked whence they derive their pride in their country, the Japanese

people always commend its natural beauty, its law and order, and its

long history and traditions. Their lifestyle is close to my ideal. The

Japanese identity is rooted in Japanese culture.

Write my Essay on The country in which I want to live

essay writing service

When we use the word culture, we are usually referring to art,

entertainment, scholarship, and cultural artifacts such as the tea

ceremony, Noh theater, Kabuki, museums, art galleries, concerts,

lectures, festivals, and similar activities. Of course, all these fall

under the rubric of culture. If we take plants as an analogy, however,

this is equivalent to looking only at the flowers and ignoring the

leaves, stems, roots, soil, and other elements that support them.

Japanese culture is not simply a matter of the activities associated

with the flowers in our daily lives. It covers the behaviors, daily

creature comforts, values, and lifestyles of people born and bred in the

ethos of Japan.

Scholars define culture as lifestyle. Culture defined as lifestyle

means mode of living and way of life. Japanese culture really is a

generic expression of the way of life of each individual. In other

words, the age of culture values the mode of living and way of life of

each individual and enhances the quality of each individuals life. As

individuals improve their quality of life, they are actually raising the

level of culture as well.

In todays global society, interchange is evolving on an infinitely

larger scale than confrontation. If we bear this in mind, we realize

that we should not only respect the diversity of lifestyles around the

world but also accustom ourselves to enjoying it. The basic stance of

society in the process of entering an era in which it steadily opens up

to the outside is to develop a culture that attracts people with

different cultural backgrounds and shuns exclusion or coercion.

For that to happen, it is most important that the various strata of

society feel pride in their way of life. The Japanese mode of living

(lifestyle and natural beauty) impresses visitors of other nationalities

and cultures as beautiful and inspires their respect and mine too.

To repeat, culture is nothing less than the way of life of each

individual. The mode of living that constitutes the totality of these

ways of life acquires centripetal force by becoming something beautiful

and safe. Japan, according to my opinion is an appealing country with

the power to attract with its lifestyle, incredible culture and

traditions.

People and things have potential value that cannot be measured in

monetary terms. Finding this value and assimilating it into ones mode

of life to give it greater substance will make a country that provides

this an ideal one for me.

The Secret Sharer

“The Secret Sharer” by Joseph Conrad shows the struggle between the captain and a man that he thinks is his alter ego. The author shows this throughout the story by allowing the reader to see how much the captain believes he has in common with a man who has snuck aboard during the middle of the night.

The story starts out by informing the reader that this is the captain’s first command on this ship. He does not know his ship or his crew very well. During the night, he takes aboard a man who is hanging from a ladder over the side of the ship. He invites the man onto the ship and gives him one of his own sleeping suits, which happens to be the right size. They begin to whisper about the circumstances in which the man has arrived; he then leads the man to his stateroom unannounced to his crew. In these beginning events of the story one starts to see that the captain does not want his crew to find out about his discovery.

During the first night aboard, the captain begins to really see himself in Leggett. One sees this when the captain is thinking to himself, “I gazed upon my other self for a while before drawing across carefully the two green curtains…” He later goes on to think, “…trying to clear my mind of the confused sensation of being in two places at once.”

One can tell that the captain does not trust his crew with his discovery of the stowaway. He shows this by hiding Leggett in the bathroom when the steward goes to clean his stateroom. One also sees this when the captain sits down to breakfast and thinks “I was constantly watching myself, my secret self, as dependent on my actions as my own personality sleeping in that bed, behind that door which faced me as I sat at the head of the table.”

Latter one sees that the captain questions the reality of his secret sharer in his stateroom. The steward goes to hang up the captain’s coat in his stateroom and does not discover Leggett. “I asked myself, that he is not visible to other eyes than mine?” The captain thinks to himself.

Towards the end of the story when the captain decides to help Leggett get off the ship and swim to land, he is worried about what he is doing, “I wondered what my double there in the sail locker thought of this commotion.” He also goes on to think, “…my second self was making now ready to slip out and lower himself overboard.” During this time the captain is coming dangerously close to shore. One now sees that Leggett is also thinking of the captain by letting go of a hat, given him by the captain to protect him from the sun, to help the captain find the right current.

One sees thought out this story how a captain with new ship and a new crew was able to bond with a stowaway. He saw this stowaway, Leggett, as himself at a younger age. One also sees the captain as someone who wanted to save Leggett and not turn him in to his former captain. He in turn helped him get to land, almost running his ship aground trying to get closer, and start a new life for himself.

The requirement for the church to preserve its powerful position was a major contributor the Salem witch hunts in The Crucible. In a time of growing unrest and discontent, people were becoming more unhappy with the church and its organization, shown through Parris and Putman’s comments, “I an not blind; there a faction and a party.” (Parris)… “Against him and all authority.” (Putnam) (Page 5). The church took action to try and maintain its position of power over the people. The church, being the sole moral and political leader at the time, was able to exploit people’s fear of the unknown by making statements about its position on the devil and acceptable behaviour without other authorities to contradict them. Therefore, if anything challenged the church’s position on moral matters, This can be seen when Proctor manages to save Elizabeth’s life, but still wants to testify against the accuracy of the trials. This shows how the church can manipulate others to get their own way.

The trials also made explicit the consequences of not following the church; the very fact that the trials were public shows this, but it is also shown in Proctors hanging. This shows that the church wanted him to be an example to others not to disobey the church’s authority and would rather let him die than show leniency.

The exploitation of peoples fear contributed to the Salem witch-hunts by severely punishing those that did, allowing the church to maintain its control over the people.

Shelleys Frankenstein the true villain/monster, the Creature or the Creator.

In the novel Frankenstein the author Mary Shelley depicts main characters the creature and the creator (Victor Frankenstein) the novel is one of pondering nature. I believe the true monster/ villain in Shelleys mind is Victor.

The word monster causes one to imagine a hideous or deformed creature that terrifies all in its path however the creature described more often then not behaves monstrously doing things which harm society and they do these things with out thinking or considering the thoughts and feelings of society. Therefore it is the behaviour rather then the looks that define a monster, thus leading to my conclusion Victor is the monster of the story he acted with no thought or consideration of neither how society would react nor how it would be affected.

He claimed to endeavour on the great task for a noble reason to defeat death yet obviously was doing it for a quite selfish reason victor himself states (page 41) life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through and pour a torrent of life into our dark world, a new species would bless me as their creator and source. this clearly depicts Victor as being the sole benefit of his discovery he wanted the acceptance and recognition by his fellow scientists of this great discovery this discovery lead to great disaster in the lives of many mainly victors, for the creature was lead to evil.

This evil stated in the paragraph above I believe is actually due to Victors actions victor was the creator of the creature therefore he was the parent, yet he rejected the babe at birth this feeling of rejection deeply hurt the maturing creature and stayed with him for life, yet over and over victor rejected the creature and was his biggest critic often calling it abhorrent and horrifying this lead the creature to harmful ways, because when it did these things it was given attention by victor. Victor created a sole creature knowing that it could never be like the rest of society yet he himself excluded it from any life it could have had peacefully with a family

Victor eventually succumbs to the creatures request for a partner yet then eventually rejects the creature once more by destroying its partner. Victor appears to have a wash of morality yet really he is scared of the outer ugliness of the creature rather then its good or evil shall I in cold blood set loose upon the earth a daemon (page 16) the daemon he refers to is the looks of the creature rather then the actions of his mind.

Over the centuries legend has dubbed the creature with the name Frankenstein and when asked who he is most will say a monster, surely legend has got it right the name goes with the title Victor Frankenstein - a monster in his own right, he had complete disregard for the morality of the issue and nothing but selfish reasons for his creation and all throughout the story his action were guided by his selfish reasoning. Surely Victor deserves the abrasive titles he so swiftly gives out to his son.

After the War of 181, the new western frontier, the industrial revolution and the transportation revolution provided new opportunities for Americans. Despite the many opportunities the Native American Indians and the African slaves had very little offered to them.

The new western frontier had numerous opportunities for Americans. The frontier initially was attractive to the farmers of the East Coast. The land’s soil was richer whereas the east farmland was sandy; therefore the opportunities of producing a high yielding crop was higher. Land was less expensive and easier to obtain. “Government land after 180 could be bought for $1.5 for about half a hectare and after the 186 Homestead Act, could be claimed by merely occupying and improving it” (Westward Expansion and Regional Difference ). The farmers had to be hunters as well. The hunters, primarily men, left their home for days at a time to hunt. The men as hunters often left the women at home. Loneliness was common among the women in the new frontier. The westward expansion was about change and “because most Indians preferred to maintain their tribal ways, Jackson pursued a policy of “removing” them from the path of white settlement (Garraty and Carnes 1).

The removal of the Native Americans, during the westward expansion, was met with resistance and resignation. “A few tribes, such as Black Hawk’s Sac and Fox in Illinois and Osceola’s Seminoles in Florida, resisted being “removed” and were subdued by troops” ( Garraty and Carnes ). Other tribes such as the Cherokee’s desired retaining their land and tried to assimilate to the settlers ways but “many tribes resigned themselves to removal” (Garraty and Carnes 1). The end result of the westward expansion was a literally a trail of deaths. Thousands of tribes traveled during the winter months and died from starvation or from the cold. The irony of the travels is that the original roads created by the Native Americans had become the pathways for the pioneers of the west.

The transportation revolution provided opportunities for the Americans. The need for roads and canals increased the nation’s economy and created jobs for Americans. The advantages of having an improved transportation system were the ability to trade longer distances and trade was less time consuming. States were now able to trade among each other at a faster pace. For example, prior to the Erie Canal, travel time by stage- coach was over two weeks and with the use of the canal the same journey was attained in six days. The nation received increased revenues with the toll charges placed on the road and canal usage. The Erie Canal “brought in over a half million dollars in tolls in its first year” (Garraty and Carnes14).

The jobs in America created an influx of European immigrants. Many Europeans felt the push- pull factor because of the many opportunities available in America. The land was easily acquired, affordable and the soil richer. Land and jobs in Europe was not as readily available hence the push to leave their homeland. The Erie Canal diggers primarily consisted of Irish immigrants partly because they were willing to work for less that the Native American settlers.

The industrial revolution provided opportunities for Americans. The industrial revolution like the transportation revolution improved the nation’s economy and created jobs. The invention of the steamboat resulted in larger transportation of products and the invention of the cotton gin revolutionized the cotton industry. The steamboat allowed products to be sent up stream in greater quantities. American products were now being utilized with the new inventions therefore improving the economy. “Cotton was the major force in the American economy for a generation beginning about 1815” (Garraty 08). Mass production of products was made possible with the invention of the cotton gin. Non-skilled laborers were needed to run the machines consequently drawing immigrants to the factories for work.

The non-skilled workers usually consisted of families and were housed by the employer. Workdays were long and hard. Women and children made up half of the workers yet wages were lower than the men. Wages were low and the working condition unsafe often leading to loss of limbs and lives. Unfortunately because the workers were unskilled and had no union their opinions of the unsafe working conditions were left unheard.

The invention of the cotton gin revived slavery. Prior to the invention slavery was dwindling. There were thoughts among the opponents of slavery of grouping freed slaves in another area. The nation was divided with whites that were disgusted with slavery and whites that found it necessary to have slaves. The establishing of the Republic of Liberia, African land purchased by the American colonization Society, failed with only 6,000 black Americans. “As cotton production expanded, the need for labor in the South grew apace” (Garraty and Carnes 0). The price of slaves rose creating shortages in parts of the South. No longer were there ideas of freeing the black slaves in the South. The freed slaves in the North if hired could find work as non- skilled or skilled laborers.

There was resentment, felt by the white’s, toward the immigrants and freed black slaves. The Native American settlers felt the immigrants and the freed blacks were stealing their jobs. Immigrants worked for less and were non-discriminatory with jobs. Despite the increase of jobs freed blacks rarely received jobs because they were black and the white workers did not want to work side by side with blacks.

The new frontier, the transportation revolution and the industrial revolution are all effects of human growth. It is impossible to stop the development of population and the side effects of growth. During this great time of discoveries it is unfortunate that not everyone living in America benefited from it. The Native American Indians once again were pushed out of their homes to accommodate the settlers. Slavery was revived because of the revolution continuing the horrible acts of cruelty. Nevertheless, the revolutions were the beginning of America’s greatness.
